Oh? Oh What Is This? My Debut Novel Will Be Published in 2018!

I have simply extraordinarily delicious news for you today because, HI, my debut novel is BEING PUBLISHED.

You have no no idea how long I’ve waited to tell you this. And also how long I spent trying to title this post. I swear, titles are the actual death of me and take 5 years off my life every time. But we can’t get distracted today. We must talk books.

Specifically: mine.

(It’s a really good topic.)

 

I’m so freaking proud to announce my first novel, A Thousand Perfect Notes, is coming June 2018 with Orchard / Hachette Children’s Books!

I have worked so so long for this and I’M SO HAPPY TO FINALLY SHARE THE NEWS WITH YOU.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you probably know that I’ve been pursuing publishing for 4 years. I’ve been dreaming of it for nearly 8 years. And in 7 months??? Holy heck, peoples, you will get to hold my small novel in paperback. I will be in a bookstore. I will write more books. I will hopefully make this my career. I will try not to eat the moon.

LIKE CAN I TAKE A MOMENT.

Usually people wait till they’re asked questions before answering them, but I’m very clever and have decided to answer some questions YOU NEVER ASKED and also probably never will ask. You’re welcome.

Q: What’s the title?
A: A Thousand Perfect Notes!

Q: Is that like…notebook notes?
A: No it is like musical notes because this is a story of pianos and darkness and I really can’t say anything more than is in the pitch so GO READ ABOVE.

Q: Ok ok, so who the heck is CG Drews?
A: Me, you dense nutmeg. Now you know all my secrets.

Q: I do admit I’m kind of disappointed to see you have a human head.
A: I actually am disappointed too.

Q: I saw it’s on Goodreads.
A: It is! The blurb will be changed in the future though, so keep your eyes peeled. The pitch in my press release does say “salvation through love” but it’s not really. Ha…trust me pls.

Q: So…two book deal?
A: TWO BOOK DEAL. My second novel comes out in 2019 and you know nothing about it mwahah haha.

Q: Will there be ARCs?
A: Yes. Possibly only in the UK though, since I’m being published in the UK. (I will give more info on that when I know it, but it probably won’t be for a while.)

Q: Are there dragons?
A: no

Q: Is there cake?
A: absolutely

Q: On a scale of 1 to Mt. Doom when Gollum fell in with the ring — how freakishly excited and prone to combustion are you?
A: yes

Q: So all the times I’ve asked this year “when are you getting published?” and you said “I don’t know!” you were lying?
A: yes

Q: wow
A: Look I said I was from the dark side. These things happen.

Q: What does this mean for PaperFury.com?
A: Honestly I’m NOT sure. I love blogging and will have tons to say if I don’t do book reviews…but I’m just not sure if it’d be appropriate for me to review books now. But the chances of me stopping blogging? HAHAHA 0% MATE YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO SUFFER THROUGH THIS BLOG FOR A WHILE LONGER.

Q: When will we see the cover?
A: IDK MATE, BE PATIENT.

Q: I’ve already congratulated you on facebook / instagram / twitter, must I comment again?
A: No it’s okayyyyy. You don’t have to keep shouting “congrats” haha. I feel bad for repeating myself EVERYWHERE but (a) I’m excited and (b) I’m freaking excited, and (c) I’m making sure everyone knows! Also I’m excited. A little bit.

Q: Tell me something cool.
A: Ok ok here is something: every single time someone says “congrats!” or “I love this” or “I would give you my castle in Scotland with 94 libraries within” or “I’m so proud of you” — I HONESTLY CAN’T WITH THE EMOTIONS THAT GIVES ME. You are all incredible. You’ve championed my blog and my writing and given limitless encouragements over my art and I just…I’m super thankful. I’M BEING MUSHY AND THE BOOK ISN’T EVEN OUT YET. But this is the truth —> I appreciate your support so much it’s absolutely impossible to summarise it.

  1. Okay I’m not going to say congratualtions again, because I already told you….but was it hard keeping this a secret? And is this why you stopped mentioning how much you wanted a book deal in your posts? And how long have you known?
    Honestly I slightly suck at secrets…that’s why I’m so good at spoiling people (whoops) and telling people what presents I’m giving them (whoops again), so the fact that you managed to keep this quiet is VERY VERY amazing. And good luck figuring out the future of Paper Fury! I’m sure it will be brilliant whatever happens. Also I can’t believe I have to wait SEVEN MONTHS to read your book, that’s ridiculous. Please write a story set in India or New Zealand, or with characters from those places, so I have a good reason to bother you about letting me read your precious words. (No pressure though. Okay, maybe some)

    • Omg you noticed I stopped mentioning book deals!😂 You are like so amazing I can’t even.😂 I don’t even remember what I blog about half the time hhah. But yes it has been a LONG time (trust me when I say looooong) so I’d be sorry for lying…but also. Not really.😂 I GET TO HOLD MY BOOK SOMEDAYYYYYY.

      If I get struck by the inspiration to write (or set a book in) a character from NZ or India I shall come directly to you!!😂

    Am I incredibly happy that your book is being published in UK so I can get my gremlin hands on it? YOU BET’CHA!!!
    And I feel incredibly betrayed that you lied to me last time I said that I NEED YOUR BOOK NOW (litearlly my last comment. I predicted the future). Truly. You have hurt my non-existent feelings. (Not really actually I AM SO HAPPY YOU ARE GETTING PUBLISHED).
    Now you’re definitely going to be one of those super authors that writes 7 books a year and isn’t possibly human. Are you excited that your diet from now on will consist of your readers tears? Is it going to keep you forever young??

      I apologise to your non-existent feelings with a only slightly gleeful-and-not-at-all-sorry apology. (I’M SURE THAT MAKES ME A NICE PERSON.) Yes yes hopefully I write 7 books a year and also turn into a dragon at some point, because it’s slightly disappointing that I have a human head.

  7. YASSS CAAIITTT. I’m so pumped, like, I’mma be rushing to Dymocks, banging on their doors like GIMME CAIT’S BOOK OR I SHALL UNLEASH MY HELLISH, DRACONIC FURY ON THY FACE. The poor sales attendants won’t know what’s hit them. Also omg I’m dying to see the cover, like, COME ON. Also also, you sneaky devil, lying to us all this time. Also also also, my dreams are crushed that you’re not secretly a dragon. Sigh.

    Speaking of, *sits and waits patiently for a 981 books series from you about dragons*.

    Being NOT an author myself I have probably relatively invaluable advice, but oh well; I’ve seen a fair few bloggers/vlogger-cum-authors discuss how they still review books, now that they are published and every author is basically their peer, but only the ones they enjoyed. So I guess there goes all that delicious venting when you positively hate a book. Maybe make an alias and secretly vent there? It’s a possibility.

    I’M JUST SO EXCITED OMG. I’ve been running around yelling at my real people friends being like GUESS WHAT, ONE OF *US* MADE IT. SHE’S AN AUTHOR NOW. BE EXCITED OR I’LL SLAP YOU WITH A CUMQUAT.

      I definitely think it’s possible to just keep reviewing but only good books. I feel it’d be like insulting (and pretentious???) to badly review other authors books. I mean, I wouldn’t want them doing it to me. SO. I’ll have to figure that out.😂

      bahah I will definitely not be that kind of author.😂I want to keep reviewing and blogging, I just don’t know if I’ll be able to do negative reviews? It doesn’t seem right somehow?? So I’d have to quit off publisher ARC lists and then I would starve from lack of books. SO IT’S A BIT OF A CRISIS.

I know I haven’t been around the blogosphere/instagram much in the last month or so because I’ve been travelling, BUT I have still been reading your posts like a creepy little stalker. (the Autism one was really great btw)

I was really nervous about that one, but everyone was so lovely. <3 I have the most incredible followers in the universe and I'M SO GRATEFUL.) I also hope ou had a good holiday/trip/travel time!!

      (Agreed it is shamefully dragon-less. It's pretty ironic that I'm a contemporary author.😂)

      I can't answer most of the questions (I don't actually know for some of them) but I wrote it in June 2015...which is freaking awesome that it's being published in that month too.😂

    I don’t see why you should stop reviewing books. Other authors review books, so why wouldn’t it be proper? I need your reviews. You are the only person I’ve found who has similar tastes as me (loves dragons, hated Red Queen) and all the books so far I’ve picked up from you have been great.

    Please tell me a dark stabby fantasy with dragons is coming next.

      • Okay i can see how that make sense. But listen. Listen. I have an entire WORLD that I plan on writing a bunch of fantasy books in and dragons are a super important part of that world so I have a little sticky note in Scrivener that whenever I finish/get published with them I’m going to try (somehow?) to send you a copy. Because you only have 12 dragon books in your list and that makes me sad. And you’re still getting owlcrates and the other monthly one. And bookstores are a thing. And you’ll find new stuff on Goodreads and Amazon. NOT TO MENTION YOU PROBABLY ALREADY GOT OR WILL GET AN ADVANCE AND WILL PROBABLY GET PROFITS (i am very optimistic about this) SO YOU’LL HAVE MORE CASH TO SPEND ON BOOKS SO YOU’LL NEVER RUN OUT OF BOOKS TO READ. WOW.

  17. As I already said on twitter – you go girl, You Go.

    I went with the self-publishing method, which ain’t quite as glamorous, but I get to make 90% of the decisions myself, so I think it comes out. My sparkly dream is to someday make enough money to quit my day job, and to have a loyal band of fans who I can use to … spread world peace.

    Advice though – I actually didn’t even get into the reviewing biz until after I published, so I really don’t see any reason why you /can’t/ keep reviewing. Indeed, Goodreads encourages authors to review a lot, so their fans can know what they can read while they’re waiting for your next book to come out. However, like a previous commenter stated, I would focus on the positive. I … don’t always, but I also largely review indie books. I also handle 90% of my reviews on a separate site from my main blog.

      I so hope you get your sparkly dream too!! I also want to be able to support myself off writing. 😍 It’d be amazing right?! I BELIEVE IN US.

      But yes, absolutely. I’d have to not give negative reviews…which would be hard because you know how picky I am. My biggest issue is that I’d have to quit publisher ARC lists because I couldn’t guarantee a good review and I don’t want to STARVE for reading because I don’t even have a local library anymore. 😫😫

    • Here’s my take, as an essaytyper author and a reader:

      * Smart, well-written books don’t necessarily sell, but they may change readers’ lives.
      * A good editor makes all the difference in the world, clarifying, correcting, counseling, and keeping an author on track — it’s all in the relationship they develop, often over a period of several books.
      * Big publishers are in the business of selling lots and lots of books in the short run, not sustaining relationships that might produce life-changing works over time.
      * Small publishers (in my experience) still value thoughtful, well-written books and editors at small houses still work closely with authors.
      * Amazon may do authors and readers a service by challenging big publishers to reexamine their business practices, opening the way for more variety in books than we’ve seen in recent years.
      * If Amazon forces small publishers out of business, or continues to undervalue the importance of good editors, authors and readers will suffer.

      • @Lena: Honestly I have no idea why you came onto my blog and said all this…most of it is super condescending and rude. (I’m actually wondering if you’re a spam bot?) Unless you’ve worked and been published by a big publisher, don’t say things you have no idea about.

        Anyway, I’m excited about my debut. I am thrilled. I worked hard to be published by one of the Big 5 publishers who care very deeply about my career and my work. (And literally every single book that has “changed lives” has been published by a big publisher.)

    It’s my dream since I was a child to have a book published, this year I finally started a novel I’ve been trying and failing to write in different forms of ideas for years! I’ve finished two first drafts doing NaNoWriMo but have so many unfinished short stories and still haven’t finished one outside NaNo. Sometimes I struggle to find time, or I’m so tired after work, stress, anxiety BUT I will get there, I will! (I did won a short story competition 2-3 yrs ago but my inner critic is wondering if it’s a fluke despite all the positive feeback)

    I hope that you still blog ( I would miss your blog) and as for books reviews why not? Even IF I became published I’d still review books, I’m a reader as well as a writer. Just I tend to be kinder in my reviews as I know how hard it is to write! Why don’t you feel that you should review books?
    Surely other writers do? I’m just wondering?

      And I really am cheering you on with your writing journey too! It’s often such a long long thing and we have to be patient and it can honestly be so discouraging…but you CAN do it. And I hope you have good luck with NaNo this year if you’re doing it!

    I’m so grateful that this is being published in the UK. If it had been Aus exclusive I would have forked out on the shipping, but it’s going to be insane seeing this book on shelves. I am so happy for you, and so excited to learn more about book two!

  29. Congrats Cait, I’m super happy for you and can’t wait to read your book (and yay for it being published in the UK, this way I can flail at all my friends and tell them to buy your book!). I have several sparkly author dreams, of course I would love to see my book in bookstores but I think my biggest one is getting to meet readers and flail over my books with them. I mean I’ve done it so many times with authors I love, it would be totally surreal if it ever happened to me! Obviously I’m not an author yet, so I don’t really know how much advice I can give you about authoring and blogging, but I think reviewing still will be totally fine, although I hardly ever see authors give other authors negative reviews, so maybe just review the books you really love? Idk, I’m glad you’re going to be keeping PaperFury alive though, I love this blog!

    Also, I hope you do continue to do book reviews. I don’t think that being an author disqualifies you from reviewing books, and in some ways it makes you more qualified. And I will almost always be more inclined to read a book if an author who I like says it’s good, so . . .

  50. Congratulations Cait!! It’s always so exciting getting to see people achieve their dreams. I am so excited for you! I live in the UK so can totally take photos of your book in bookstores when the time comes haha. Will it be released in Australia at all?

    I completely understand about you not being sure if you can continue blogging. I think it will be totally acceptable to continue blogging about writing & other things, and spreading love about books! But I think it’s understandable that you don’t know if you can review books, I totally agree that it’s probably not appropriate to post negative reviews once you’re an author. Why? Because authors reviews carry more weight and affect a lot more people (negatively) than a third party’s (book reviewers) review would. I actually got into an argument with another blogger about this because they couldn’t see that side of things from a professional stand point.

    Authors supporting other authors is what I want to see! I honestly would not want to see authors posting negative reviews of other authors’ work. I would be devastated if my favourite author started posting negative reviews about other books that I actually loved. It would make me feel that the author and I are disconnected somehow (If that makes sense). Personally I can not really see any positive point for it. It’s personal preference, but in my opinion, as an author, you would burn a lot of bridges if you posted negative reviews all the time. I think this is something you should discuss with your agent!

    Definitely keep posting positive reviews though! Spreading love for your fellow authors is totally cool!

    I can’t wait to see how your author journey turns out! I hope to hear of more books being published soon 😀

Maybe not reviewing, but omg I couldn’t give up blogging.😂 I’d be lost.😂 And I absolutely agree with you…like if I think of any of my favourite authors out there giving bad reviews of books, I’d be like “No that’s not right.” So I’m not an exemption to any rules. I feel like I’d still be able to give flaily 5-star reviews though. So I’ll keep thinking about it!!

Okay, you’re gonna laugh, but my author dreams are going to Y’allFest to be featured in a panel and one of the other speakers being like “I”m sorry miss, but this area is for the speakers only.” and (after having a mini heart attack BECAUSE HEY LOOK AWESOME AUTHOR RIGHT THERE) I’d laugh and say “Actually, I’m one of the speakers.” (Because my ultimate dream is to be published rlly young and if I get published as young as I’d like to be, my actual favorite authors would probably mistake me for just another fangirl.
    My other dream would be to be fangirling over my favorite authors with my own fans. That…. that would be fun.
    And yes, walking into a bookstore and seeing my own book (and then maybe signing a random page so that some random kid’ll walk up and buy it and accidentally buy a signed copy because IMMA TROLLLLLL) would also be fun.
    Getting published in general would just be fun.

      And yes, I have a literary agent in the UK also (I couldn’t have done this alone). I do recommend querying 100%. I think it’d be terrifying to navigate the publishing world alone, and I know an agent gives you a MUCH better chance of being seen.

    Having never published a book myself, I’m wondering a few things. Like, what’s happening at this point in the process? Are you still working on the book (edits and such), or… by the time the press release comes out, is it out of your hands? (It would be really informative for other aspiring writers if you wrote a blog post at some point about the timeline and details of publishing a book.)

    As for continuing to review books, that’s tricky. Especially if you review a book published by the same company that’s publishing your books… and you don’t really like it. (I’ve seen other authors continue to review, but I believe some of them were self-published. That’s not quite the same.) Well, you’ll just have to have more bloggy-type posts and fewer reviews, that’s all.

      I’m actually not sure what exact details I can say right now. 😂 But maybe soon I can give more details? I know it’s different for like different publishers and authors (I mean, I know some books that come out as ARCS 6+ months in advance! Mine definitely will not be like that😂)

      I actually quit from reviewing Hachette books ages ago now.😂I’m pleased no one picked up on that though hahha, but yes. I think it’d be quite a problem to be critiquing my peers in a way? I will definitely keep blogging. I mean, there’s MUCH to flail about without writing negative reviews. And even just writing positive reviews for books I love will still be fun!

I’ve kinda disappeared from the internets, but had come and squeal with you because this is SUCH COOL news. I remember a post you wrote about if/how blogging would work once you became a published author. I get why you might not feel comfortable reviewing books in the same manner, but I’m sure you can find a way to make it work for you, so you can still have your little (or rather huge. You’re well loved haha) bookish space on the internets. Where there’s a will, there’s a way….and all that jazz. Best of luck with everything and here’s to seeing your book in store in 2018!! woohoo

    In all seriousness, I’m super happy to hear you’re finally publishing a book (about time :D), it does sound intriguing thus far and if you need to step back from your blog to focus on your book, that’s completely understandable.     I’ve always wanted to write a book, but never pursued it because it seemed like such an impossible dream. However, after the worst year of my life I’ve realized that I should do whatever will make me happy, and give it everything I’ve got. So I am going to write! My sparkly author dream is simply get over the fear of sucking, and to finish a book!

    I think it’s still totally appropriate for you to review books. Why not? I know writers who are also reviewers. I’ve always felt like it’s the right way to go too, cause you keep in touch with the reader community. Writers tend to just sort of drift off and become these weird unreachable creatures, which isn’t cool. Isn’t a writer also a reader? A writer has to read in order to be a good writer, first and foremost. So I think you should totally keep blogging and reviewing. After all, writing a book yourself does not suddenly “disallow” you to have opinions about other people’s books. What would it change?

    Oh and I’m totally going to comment again. Dang, I’ve wanted you to get your book deal since I’ve started reading you, so I’m very excited and I’ll use every chance to congratulate you again and again 🙂
