I have been a NaNoing. And as of Day 13, I am half way through.
For anyone who doesn’t know, participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is another way of saying “this writer is very ambitious, and possibly off their rockers.” It’s the aim to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Surprisingly, it’s very, very possible.
I’ve been writing a book called Like a Spinning Teacup. Here’s a very unedited, long pitch.
Reilly Kao likes mediocrity. They have a deal, and it’s working out just fine. But then her aunt dies, and suddenly a tiny, talented, four-year-old Chinese cousin (with a name Australian-born Reilly can’t pronounce) winds up in their house for an extended visit. Normality is nice, but not really on to “now happening” cards. (Especially since Reilly is also doing community service at the local op-shop.) Sometimes you have to embrace your family and their idiosyncrasies, and do what it takes to dry a kid’s tears.
This book isn’t exactly easy to write, because I don’t have all that much plot, and I’m making it up as I go along. So far the result of this has just culminated in a scene involving initiation to Australian culture by eating Milo and Tim-Tams. I could really do with Milo or Tim-Tams.
Anyway! Here are some stats:
NaNo Day: #13
Word Count: 25,000
Main Character: Reilly Kao, sixteen year old Chinese-Australian
Settings so far: #8
Overall mood colour: Blue. Bright blue, ice blue, and, briefly, cobalt.
Favourite costume: Reilly’s niece, Tea, wearing a white tutu, high-topped boots, and a denim jacket. She’s adorable.
Weirdest Hobby: Reilly’s father, who looks like a businessman, spins. As in, spinning wheel. He finds it relaxing.
Weirdest Name: Tsong Qinghua (Tsong Ching-hwa). Relax, her Chinese family ruled she’d need an “American” name and she became Tea Tsong.
And here I give you the odd snippet (emphasis on the “odd” part):
Yes, I know. My snippets aren’t exactly poetic. But I’m having fun.
So, fellow NaNoers! How are you going? Who’s hit the half-way mark? If you’re not doing NaNo, then, “Hail, sane person! Have you ever had to sit through an unfortunately sickening driving lesson, or ever made icing with citric acid and no recipe?”
Mime is currently reading Uncommon Criminals and enjoying it very much. Because she is doing NaNo, she is too busy to watch movies, which she finds unfortunate, because she really wants to see The Wolverine. Currently, she is over the moon, because she’s about to meet her newest newphew, Archer. He’s really cute.
