Bookworms are an emotionally delicate lot and should be treated carefully. Usually when I say “treat carefully” I just mean buy them lots of books and bake them delicious treats, preferably cake. BUT! There are also phrases that can send them into wretched meltdowns of agony and despair.
So, kindly of me, I’ve compiled a list of things bookworms do not EVER want to hear. Bookworms should probably forward this list to friends, family, local friendly reptiles, authors and also publishers. We need to EDUCATE THE WORLD, bookworm friends, that way they’ll stop destroying us.
“LET’S REDO THE COVERS OF THIS SERIES THAT’S ONLY HALF PUBLISHED!” SAYS THE PUBLISHERS.
Says the publishers? Pfft. Says satan. This honestly hast to be the WORST sentence in the history of ever. Collecting books isn’t cheap! And 94% of bookworms* like to buy series that match. I’ve honestly quit on collecting series that have had cover changes. And let’s not even talk about the travesty that was The Winner’s Curse revamp**. Ugh. I still have nightmares.
* Yes I pull random stats out of the air all the time. But if I decree they’re true, then how can they be otherwise, hmm?
** Which, thankfully, they retracted…and doubly thankfully the UK editions were not stupid and belittling of feminine women to try the change anyway.
“DON’T YOU THINK YOU HAVE ENOUGH BOOKS NOW?”
Whoever says this should probably be pitied instead of murdered since they clearly do not understand the culture of a bookworm. But how do you even stay calm in the face of such a sentence?! Do we…laugh? Cry? Box up our books, move to Antartica, and socialise only with understanding and non-judgemental penguins? HOW DO WE HANDLE THIS.
“SO I HAD A SMALL ACCIDENT WITH YOUR BOOK…BUT IT JUST LOOKS WELL-LOVED NOW, RIGHT?!”
Well…loved…EXCUSE ME I JUST CHOKED TO DEATH.
Although, not all bookworms have problems with books that are battered and well-loved and have occasional tear stains. Some quite love it! But I still feel like there’s a difference between damaging YOUR book YOURSELF…and having a borrower return it in a horrible condition.
THIS IS WHY I DON’T LEND BOOKS.
“THE RELEASE DATE HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK…AGAIN.”
Oh was that the sound of my heart shattering on the ground? Oh, ha ha. No biggie. I mean, I didn’t need closure and comfort and happiness anyway…
“THERE’S ACTUALLY MORE TO LIFE THAN BOOKS.”
This doesn’t even make sense. This is like a weird mixture of the English language into a nonsensical string of noises that NO ONE should really be uttering.
And to prove that everything about life is books…just think of someone doing something GREAT. Inventing something. Creating something. Discovering something. What happens to that someone? THEY GET A BOOK WRITTEN ABOUT IT. Humans write down everything. And before that they were scrawling their accomplishments on the wall. So I would very firmly shriek that there isn’t more to life than books.
“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”
Benjamin Franklin
Proof. See?
“THE HARDCOVER IS, LEGIT, TWICE THE PRICE OF THE PAPERBACK.”
And the hardcovers are, of course, more beautiful. Just to torment us. I mean, couldn’t they be a few dollars difference? Or couldn’t I at least find myself a Book Benefactor* who will specifically buy me nice books since I cannot afford them because I have to do other measly things like, um, live.
* You know how in Great Expectations, Pip was sponsored by that Unknown Benefactor, who gave him money to live for like — NO REASON? Yeah. I want one.
“YOU CAN ONLY TAKE ONE BOOK ON THIS HOLIDAY.”
I don’t like this phrase. Especially since it brings up the idea that, perhaps, you’ll be expecting me to SOCIALISE on this holiday. Oh excuse me; my soul is fracturing.
(The best way to get around phrase like this, of course, is to take a kindle. HA.)
“THE LIBRARY/BOOKSTORE IS CLOSED.”
At least with internet and insta-ordering-books, this isn’t the tragedy it once was. BUT IT CAN STILL BE REALLY BAD, OKAY?!?! My library likes to close down for like 2 weeks over Christmas/New Years. I don’t know why. I mean, how dare the librarians have time off to be with relations. Isn’t their lives books????
“CALM DOWN. IT’S JUST A BOOK.”
I WILL NOT BE CALM. ARGHUQQUWIRQRQ. THERE IS NO CALM WHEN A BOOK HAS JUST WRENCHED YOUR FEELS OUT AND STOMPED ON THEM. THERE IS NO CALM WHEN A BOOK HAS EATEN YOUR MIND AND WILL NOT LET GO. THERE IS NO CALM; THERE IS ONLY BOOK.
“THE SEQUEL HASN’T BEEN BOUGHT BY PUBLISHERS YET,” SAYS THE AUTHOR AS THEY WRITE A MASSIVE CLIFFHANGER.
Now this isn’t the author’s fault, it’s the publishers. But it’s still a phrase I never ever want to hear…and gosh, I hear it all the time. Last year Walk on Earth a Stranger was up on Goodreads as a standalone. UM. NO. That ending is not satisfactory — at all!! (They don’t even get to the magicy goldmining part yet, omg.) Luckily the trilogy must’ve sold and I am now at peace (Also please go behold the sequel’s cover. IT’S SO GORGEOUS). Under A Painted Sky however…um, a) cliffhanger, b) no sequel* as of yet. WUT IS THIS LIFE.
* I literally put aside my fear of authors and ASKED STACEY LEE THIS. SHE ONLY SAID “MAYBE”. Cue fretful noises.
“LET’S PUT STICKERS ON THE FRONT OF BOOK COVERS TO SAY THERE’S BONUS CONTENT INSIDE!” SAYS THE PUBLISHERS.
I’m pretty sure there is evil that does not sleep in publishing houses and they invent stuff like this to torment us.
“YOU KNOW THAT BOOK YOU RECOMMENDED 3 YEARS AGO? I’M READING IT NOW!”
So let’s take a minute to agree that being a book reviewer is hard because tastes change! A book I loved 3 years go, I might not recommend now. (Unless it’s by Maggie Stiefvater. Because let’s be real: read all her stuff. Immediately. And every time I re-read, I give her books another star. So far The Raven Cycle is at 384398 stars.) Also old reviews can be horrifically horrific. I know that was a terrible sentence but THAT JUST SUMS UP MY FEELINGS EXACTLY, OKAY?!?
“OH! I’VE READ THAT BOOK TOO! DID YOU GET TO THE PART WHERE ***SPOILERS*** AND THEN ***SPOILERS***? HA HA! SO MUCH PAIN ABOUT ***SPOILERS***, RIGHT?!?”
This. is. unfathomably. devastating. Although, to be fair, people don’t often TRY to spoil books…but it happens way more than it should! AGH. And I realise if a book has been out for 10 years it’s easy to assume everyone has read it: BUT DON’T EVER ASSUME. I’ve been 100% put-off reading books because people have casually spoiled them.
In my long ago childhood, my sister did this to me. You know how I said I have 4 sisters? WELL. TRUTH IS I USED TO HAVE MORE OF THEM BUT NOW THERE ARE LESS.*
* I’m joking. Maybe.
“But, Kara, how are you going to fit than on your bookshelf?” I DON’T KNOW. I’LL FIGURE IT OUT, OKAY!?
“I’m sorry. [Book Title] is out of stock.” 😱😱😱😡
“Oh. I thought that book was only for children!” Ughhhhhhhhhhhhh.
“Have you seen the movie? It was so much better than the book!!!” -_-
Kara @ Diary of a Teen Writer recently posted…MIDNIGHT QUEEN Teaser & an Update
It’s like a nice CHALLENGE to fit them onto our bookshelves. And book titles should not be allowed to go out of stock. NEVER. AGH. NEEEEVER. The last one should never be spoken. Not ever. Omg.
Absolutely everything is 100% spot on! Especially the stickers on book covers. IT GETS IN THE WAY OF MY BEAUTIFUL INSTAGRAM WORTHY COVER AND IT ISN’T FAIR.
I do have a confession though. Once, My friend loaned me her copy of Little Women (I wasn’t very bookwormy yet and I thought “hm, I feel quite smart reading classics perhaps Little Women might be good choice”) and I returned the book NEARLY A YEAR LATER AND I MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE ACCIDENTALLY TORN OFF THE FRONT COVER. *whimpers in shame* I’M SORRRYYYY. It was an accident! It was a paperback and I read it so much that I TORE OFF THE COVER AND I FELT SO BAD…*cries*
There. I said it. *whew* I feel so much better.
Also. Cait? That last confession of your’s frightens me.
Izel @ A Bookish Flower recently posted…{Writerly Me} wherein i release my inner writer
EXACTLY. Omg I haaaaate those stickers. A few I’ve got I’ve managed to scrub off, but some are actually printed onto the cover. 😭
Omg you BOOK DESTROYER.😂 I’ve destroyed my own books but never someone else’s…although my dog ate my sister’s music book? #mybad
Pfffft. You know I’M A NICE PERSON TRULY. :’)
Hahaha these are all SO TRUE. I’m still disappointed they pushed back the release date for BLOOD PASSAGE for the cover revamp, though in that case at least, unlike THE WINNER’S KISS, the new covers are more representative of the series.
They pushed back the release date for The Raven King from October 2015…TO FREAKING APRIL 2016. WHAT KIND OF FRESH TORTURE WAS THAT. 😭 😭 Ahem. And cover redesigns aren’t always bad. 😛 Sometimes they’re quite good! But it’s annoying when you don’t have the option to complete a current collection!
Wait, they pushed it back a whole six months?! I only read the first three books last summer, and at that time I think the release was slated for February. Six months is cruel!
However, I’m determined to buy the US edition because Scholastic likes to “translate” for foreign audiences (remember Harry Potter and the PHILOSOPHER’S Stone?). As a Canadian living in the UK, I can’t handle having a book on my shelves with teenagers in Virginia saying words like “petrol” and “mobile phone”. That shit meant it took me a whole book to realise the boys didn’t live on the ground floor of Monmouth Manufacturing (UK first floor = US second floor). Which I guess makes my number one thing not to say to a bookworm: “We translated the foreign English into your local variation. It TOTALLY didn’t impact on the worldbuilding or anything…” D;
“Don’t you think it’s time you thinned out your bookshelves?” WHAT!?!?! So what you are saying is that I should get rid of BOOKS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! What kind of sick person are you????????? My book shelves shall remain ever overflowing and abundant so HAH!
So….. Yeah that would be my response to that IDIOTIC QUESTION I shall calm down now…..
Another thing you don’t want to hear: “Why did you bring a book?” Uh because there is always time to read. Though sometimes it may be only like 30.1473577 seconds, that is still precious, amazing, GLORIOUS time spent reading!!!!! ……..also it’s a great conversation starter………
Your reaction here = 100000% PERFECT I SO AGREE. I get frequently told I could cull books BUT WHY? WHY WOULD I FRACTURE MY SOUL’S COLLECTION? NOOOOOO.
Omg and yes to the “why did you bring a book” question. There are so many reasons! Potential apocalypse weapon! Something to keep you from boredom! Security! It’s like brining a friend! Because you want to! <--- all grand reasons
I agree with everything. *sagely nods her head* I kind of got reminded of my copy of Divergent which now lies bruised with scratches (yes, really. I’ve got a metallic cover which gets scratched easily), folds (OH, THE HORROR) and a broken spine. A ghastly reminder that I should lend books to people who I trust like 10000%
And the stickers on books are tormenting! (especially price tags) And hardcovers are beautiful! (though I never try to buy them as my parents…well)
DUDE I UNDERSTAND. I took my copy of Divergent camping…it now has HUGE scratches (darn tat metallic cover) and a gouge in the back. 😭 😭 BOOKWORM AGONY.
THE BOOKSTORE IS CLOSED….. that happened to me just the other day and it was sad….

You missed out, “It’s bedtime, you should stop reading, you have [work/school/an interview/an exam/whatever] tomorrow” and “there is no more room for bookshelves”.
Nikki recently posted…Stacking the Shelves
Agree with the first one! Like, we NEED to know what happens next, we can’t just stop right there and wait until tomorrow! This is more important than whatever it is we have tomorrow!
AGREED WITH YOU BOTH. There is no “it can wait until tomorrow”. LIFE CANNOT GO ON UNTIL ALL IS KNOWN TO US BOOKWORMS. *stamps foot*
Spoilers=I HATE SO SO SO SO SO SO MUCH. You should never ever ever read a Sherlock Holmes book introduction until you finish the book because they are full of spoilers.
Also, why would anyone ever say that you have enough books? That’s ridiculous. They should probably be put into a lunatic asylum. 🙂
AGH SAME SAAAAAME. IT LITERALLY DRIVES ME CRAZY WHEN I GET UN-ASKED-FOR SPOILERS. I’ll remember that for reading Sherlock books though! 😱
The things we bookworms have to put up with from non-readers. *sighs dramatically*
I hate them stickers myself. And I recently moved to Spain for a year, had to leave my beloved bookshelf behind and only brought my Kindle with me…..Thank God for libraries! You know my pain :/
AGH. I UNDERSTAND THAT PAIN. You are brave to leave all your books behind!!😱😱
– I HATE mid-series cover changes! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? I NEED A MATCHING SET PEOPLE!
– Also, no. You cannot borrow my book unless you treat it like the precious baby it is. And even then I’m hesitant.
– There is no more to life than books, okay? Books are all there is. And cake.
– Hardcovers are expensive but SO PRETTY THOUGH!
– Ahaha yes, Kindle/Kobo would be the perfect option for a situation like that! 😛
– IS THAT A JACKSEPTICEYE GIF? I love him. ^_^
– Aahh I hate it when that happens! I NEED CLOSURE DAMMIT!
– Stickers are evil.
– I don’t mind spoilers THAT much, but it’s still irritating.
Clearly you are a mind-reader Cait. It’s so obvious.
Bee @ Quite the Novel Idea recently posted…{Bookish Babble} In Defense of Reading Multiple Books at Once
MATCHING BOOKS ARE CRUCIAL FOR LIFE HAPPINESS. THEY ARE. NO ONE CAN CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.
Books and cake. Or cake made out of books or books made out of cake.
HARDCOVERS ARE HONESTLY MY LIFE THO. I WILL ALWAYS CHOOSE THE HARDCOVER. POVERTY WILL ALSO PROBABLY BE IN MY NEAR FUTURE.
Publishers being akin to Satan has me in tears! Seeing a publishing date for a sequel more than one year in the future is hell. I seem to have a curse of finding series I like where the authors take two plus years to finish the next book. Have the library say they are not going to order the next book in a series when the other libraries in the lending system don’t have that series (hence it is a given they will not he ordering the book). I was happily reading a trilogy called The Line and got the first two books from the library and they refuse to buy the last one. Why? They won’t tell me. It is one of those books that never goes on ebook sale either, and I won’t pay $11.99 for and ebook! Another wonderful post, Cait, thank you. 🙂
ZOMG ME TOO. I have a ton of books that I swear the first one’s came out earlier, but the sequels are coming out so much later in the year?!? I mean, I guess we can’t rush writerly genius BUT IT HURTS MY BOOKWORM SOUL. *cries*
My library loves to collect sequels. AGH. And omg paying that much for an ebook is ridiculous. I basically refuse to pay more than $5 for an ebook. MAYBE I HAVE BAD PRIORITIES….but sheesh, seriously?! Ebooks shouldn’t be that expensive!
YES. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS LIST.
I swear publishers are just TRYING to annoy us sometimes. Like, do none of them realise our pain? Matching books without stickers and with nice covers please. It ain’t that hard.
A few to add
-‘Oh I just took one of your books off your shelf. Hope you don’t mind but I felt like reading it.’
-‘That book with the massive cliffhanger you just read? No, the library doesn’t have the sequel, even though they have the first book’
-‘This book isn’t in stock at Dymocks or Booktopia so now you have to order it off Book Depository and wait two weeks!!!!! Take that Australians!!!’
‘Tis a hard life we bookworms struggle through.
THEY TOTALLY ARE TRYING TO ANNOY US. There’s probably a secret society within publishing houses on how much they can make bookworms cry. #legit
Oh and to add to your first one “and I returned it but put it wherever because it doesn’t matter right?” *breaks things*
Australian bookworms get the WORSE end of the deal most times though.😭😭 YEAH SURE WE DIDN’T WANT TO READ THE BOOK BEFORE IT’S LIKE OLD NEWS. 😭😭
aAAG i HATE stickers – learnt a trick from EpicReads which is pretty handy though – blow dry over the sticker and it comes off with no residue
safah – oh, how i wander recently posted…falling in love with minimalism
DUDE. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS!??! I WILL BE USING THIS TIP IMMEDIATELY THANK YOU.
The release date has been pushed back translates to, if you listen closely, you can hear the hearts of readers the world over breaking.
Calm down, it’s just a book – I got this from my entire family, not about a book, but about Meg in Supernatural. I’m sure you can guess what I’m referring to without me posting massive spoilers. 😉
You know what really makes my blood boil? Freebies with books. I know that’s a really odd one, but it bugs me that they think they have to bribe people to read, and it probably doesn’t help that the only time I’ve gotten a novel with a freebie is when All Fall Down came with a tube of mascara. First, I don’t wear mascara and, second, only selling that novel with a tube of mascara taped to it is going to put off the majority of male readers.
The fact that there’s a pink cover for the Hunger Games irritates me for the same reason.
I…actually don’t mind spoilers. *Runs away and hides*

I’m glad you don’t mind spoilers though!😂 Lucky you. For movies = I love the. For books = I will scream for 900 years if accidentally given them.
I’m kinda torn about “pink” books…tbh, I don’t think pink books SHOULD be a problem because there shouldn’t be any stigma about boys reading pink books. BUT YEAH. It’s hard.
Right. It SHOULDN’T be a problem, especially when you consider that blue used to be considered the ‘girl’ colour and pink used to be the ‘boy’ colour, but the sad fact of the matter is that I know some guys who just will not pick up a pink book. 🙁
Rain @ Ivyclad Ideas recently posted…Heroine Appreciation Post!
EXACTLY!! WHY DID THEY EVEN CHANGE THAT AROUND ANYWAY? HISTORY IS WEIRD. And omg, I know I know. My brother would never have picked up a pink book. 😐 The sexism over colours is buried deep and will probably take forever to change and this makes me sad.
Stickers on book covers look horrid! But you can actually get rid of those nasty stickers by wiping them with a cotton swab soaked with nail polish remover. Just use a light touch, and the sticker peels right off! I tried that with several books, and it actually works. 🙂

OMG I HAVE HEARD OF DANIEL TIGER!😂 My nephew/niece watch it…but I honestly hadn’t ever heard of it until they started. hehe. Ahem. Randomness of me. ;D And YES. I definitely go out of my way to collect specific books. #priorities
The release-date-pushed-back one. Yep. That’s agonizing . . . though there are some authors who I love so much that they could say they’re not publishing the next book for five years, and I’d be ridiculously sad but I’d forgive them immediately. (But then you have authors who I used to love, but then they push back the release on my absolute favorite of their series, and they keep doing that again . . . and again . . . and keep publishing books I really don’t like in the meantime . . .)
Also: related to the changing-the-book-covers mid-series: rereleasing a book under a different name. So you’re like “Oh, yay, new book . . . oh. No, wait, I’ve read this book. What the pumpernickel.” And then the new title isn’t even that great; it’s only there because it fits better with the theme of the rest of the titles.
Sarah recently posted…Random Fridays: Spring 2016 Reads
AH YES!! That struggle is SO REAL. Plus like if they keep putting us off, it’s obvious we’re going to develop new passions and favourites, right?!? THE FIRE DOES DIE.
Omg, I honestly have borrowed a book from the library TWICE that was the same.😂 Just a different cover/title. I was so excited to have two books by this author but noooooooo. *screams*
Cover changes upset me greatly. Almost on the verge of being inconsolable. I can’t tell you how many random copies of book I have that I’ve replaced just to have a matching series. Why don’t bookshops just let us trade them in and give us a new, matching copy. That, and missing series’.
I think I’ve got 4 or 5 books where the author wasn’t happy with a books exposure and decided to ditch it. Looking at you Hex Hall author.
Are you taking note of these? I feel like you should be taking notes so you can discuss this at your next bookish world leaders slash cake party.
Inconsolable is a very real state of feeling. *weeps with you* It’s put me entirely off reading/collecting a series, tbh. DUDE THE TRADING THING WOULD BE SO NICE. I wish I could trade books I hated too.😂 AHem.
I will be taking notes and definitely will be implementing changes when I rule the world. There will be no “meeting” though. I’ll just send out my orders via dragon message, probably, and demand they be followed immediately or else.
Okay, I’m trying not to explode just by recalling this horrific event, but I once lent The Hunger Games to a person who shall not be named. It was returned to me with a freaking phone number written on the tittle page. Ahhhhhhhhggggggggaaaaaaaahhhhhh
*ahem*
Also, another who shall not be named carelessly sat on my copy of Cinder (paper back) and ripped the cover half off. Not only was this a beautiful book, it was SIGNED by the person who gave it to me and whom I happen to love very much. And it is irreplaceable. Luckily, I have saved it through my taping skills and the rip is almost unnoticeable now.
People say they’ll buy me a new book. No, no. I’m sorry. That’s not how it works. I form an emotional attachment to each of my books. I don’t care if the one you buy looks exactly the same, it is not my book.
I do not mind battered books. I look lovingly upon my tattered old things that have been well worn by my own fingers. But if you harm my babies by mishandling them, I will shank you.
This was a rant by Katherine. Thank you for tuning in.
OMG ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!??! IS THE PERSON STILL ALIVE?!?! I WILL HELP YOU BURY A BODY IF NEEDED, KATHERINE.😱 My sister gifted me a christmas present book, then borrowed it, tHEN RETURNED IT WITH A BENT COVER. Another sister I can do without. Ahem. (I would still take the offer of a new book if suggested though.😂)
I hate stickers on book covers because sometimes the stickers are ugly, and hard to peel off, and leave sticker goo all over the book. It’s deeply upsetting. 🙁
Aj @ Read All The Things! recently posted…FF Friday: To All The Horror Books I’ve Loved Before
Dude YES. The goo is awful! I mean, it’s almost as bad as the stickers because the book then sticks to others and TRAGEDY.😭
THESE ARE SO TRUE. Although I don’t have any problem with the last two you mentioned, but still. HORRIFIC. THOSE PHRASES ARE HORRIFIC. And who says there are more to life than books? NO THERE ISN’T. BOOKS HAVE EVERYTHING. IT’S ALWAYS THERE FOR YOU.
EXAAAACTLY. BOOKS ARE LIFE. THERE IS NO ARGUMENT TO THIS AT ALL OMG.😭
WHEN PEOPLE BORROW YOUR BOOKS
AND TAKE THEM TO THE BEACH
AND GET THEM WET
SO THE EDGES OF YOUR EXPENSIVE CLOTH BOUND HARDCOVER
GET WHITE AND PAPERY
AND THEN ACT LIKE IT’S NO BIG DEAL
WHEN YOU HAVE NEVER EVEN HAD A CHANCE TO READ THAT SPECIFIC COPY OF YOUR OWN BOOK
BECAUSE IT IS NEW AND SHINY.
I suppose it’s my own fault for lending it out…. no more!!
OMG. WHAT FRESH EVIL IS THAT?!?!? I wouldn’t even take my own book to the beach let alone another human do so.😭 ARE THOSE HUMANS STILL ALIVE THOUGH, OLIVIA???? BECAUSE IF YOU NEED TO BURY A BODY, I CAN HELP.
“Says the publishers? Pfft. Says satan.” XD OH MY GOSH. So true though. Like, what is with that?? I cannot even imagine collecting a book series that doesn’t look aesthetically perfect. Like I scare myself sometimes I’m so OCD — everything has to be symmetrical and MATCHINGGG. ahem. “Well…loved…EXCUSE ME I JUST CHOKED TO DEATH.” hAHA true tho! Like how is abusing a book “loving it”?? (this is the downfall of society, right here. WOW.)
DUUUUDE that Benjamin Franklin quote is amazing. Literally snuggling that for the rest of eternity thnx. ♥ “Yeah. I want one.” ME TOOOO THO. xD “to live for now reason.” omg. wilting. Also am I the only one who CANNOT STAND how paperback covers curl up??? It’s like I constantly have to squish them between things when I’m not reading them because gah I just do not like my book to be curling open. xD OR OR OR if you crush a poor paperback in your sleep and the cover is now dog-eared. WORST.
HAHA it’s actually so funny because I’m fairly sure I’m one of the only people on the planet who actively seeks out/enjoys being spoiled for books, movies, etc. LIKE WHEN SOMEONE SPOILS EVERYTHING I’M LIKE, “THANK YOU.” Yes it is incredibly strange, but then so am I. xD I just like to know what happens! Otherwise I am SCARED. idk things are just more enjoyable when I know what to expect. x)
THIS IS FABULOUSNESS.

DUDE MATCHING IS BEAUTIFUL AND LET NO ONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. I honestly have full blown brain meltdowns if I’m presented with the idea a series might not match. Like I ordered Clockwork Princess after buying Clockwork Angel second hand…AND CLOCKWORK PRINCESS ARRIVED IN A DIFFERENT SIZE BECAUSE IT DIDN’T OCCUR TO ME TO CHECK THE HEIGHT AND EXCUSE ME, I MUST GO DIE. I’ve got them on separate shelves because I can’t bear to look at them.😭
Ohhh, and I can’t stand the paperback curl either. YOU AND ME BOTH, MY FRIEND. Also it’s SO humid where I live at the moment, I had a book cover literally curl entirely up. I’m currently squashing it with other books but SERIOUSLY OMG THIS WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED WITH A HARDCOVER. #hardcoverloveforever
*whispers* I’m weird in that I really like movie spoilers but NOT EVER book spoilers?!?! Idek why. My brain is an odd place.😂
YES TO ALL OF THESE. I actually intensely dislike first books that are cliffhangers let alone STANDALONES THAT ARE CLIFFHANGERS. Is that not an oxymoron?!? I am okay with open endings but not casual shrugs like “hahaha let’s hope we get everyone desperate enough to throw pineapples at the publisher until they publish the sequel”??? And omg, spoilers are the worst. Especially when they come from teachers because you can’t whack them over the head. *grumbles*
I actually weep when there’s a ridiculously expensive hardcover of a book and there is NO PAPERBACK. I mean, agonising choices are one thing, but NO CHOICES ARE ANOTHER AND JUST OMG. I could buy THREE other books for the price of one that I really want.

DUDE YES. Except sometimes if a standalone is left really open, I’m okay with that because I like to think the story is continuing *cough*Tremolo*cough* BUT SOMETIMES IF IT’S REALLY REALLY OPEN I JUST WANT TO SCREAM AND NOTHING IS OKAY.
I suppose it’s polite not to smack teachers over the head. *sad noises*
DUDE I struggle with paperback vs hardcover ALWAYS. Australia usually doesn’t even get in the paperbacks? Unless your name is The Raven King, which they’re ONLY getting the hardcover in apparently because they want me to cry having to wait an extra 2 months. 😠
How are you always so accurate? I’ve heard the ‘There’s more to life than books’ line before and it’s awful. I know there’s an actual real world out there, I just choose to ignore it a lot of the time. And ‘it’s just a book’ makes me so angry. It may be a book, but I have very real and intense emotions about them. I probably care about that book more than I care about the person who made that comment (unless it’s my mom, she judges me occasionally for my reading but she totally understands at the same time as she reads as much as I do. I definitely care about my mom even if she has her judgmental hat on).
And stickers on books fill me with so much rage. They are impossible to get off! I have actually damaged a book cover before trying to peel one of those things off and it filled me with such immense hatred for whatever idiot decided that was a good idea. But what about the book covers where they decided to make it look like there’s a sticker on it but it’s, in fact, a part of the cover because they realised people were taking the stickers off so they made a permanent sticker mar the cover forever just to elevate you to that special level of rage which makes you want to leave a path of destruction in your wake.
And now I feel a small level of rage thing about these things. I am going to go away and have a hot chocolate to soothe my ruffled feathers at the utter accuracy of this post.
There basically ISN’T more to life than books, and some people are just in denial over this fact. #legit And omgggg, I often care more about a book than I care about actual other things and AGH I WISH PEOPLE WOULD UNDERSTAND AND NOT DISMISS THAT AS WEIRD OR NONSENSE. IT IS LIFE AND IT IS PAINFUL AND BOOKS ARE BEAUTIFUL. ahem.
And when I get stickers off, sometimes they leave horrible sticky residue behind anyway?? Which is gross and makes me JUST as sad. 🙁 And honestly, because IRONY, I just got a review-copy of a book in the mail today with a sticker PRINTED ON IT. Life is curel.
Ooh, make me a hot chocolate too. I’LL BRING THE CAKE.
It’s good some of us recognise our priorities when it comes to books otherwise the world would just descend into madness.
And the sticky residue of a sticker is the worst, you find random bits of fluff attached to your books after that and it just makes the book cover look dirty. Why would that be attractive? And see, printed stickers are awful. I feel I should start a campaign against them. I mean, if publishers insist upon this sticker madness they ould at least invest in easy-peel stickers, they almost never have the nasty side effects. And see, my mere suggestions of printed books stickers summoned a copy for you to really drive the point home on how annoying they are.
And I would totally make you hot chocolate in exchange for cake. I’m easy like that, cake will pretty much get me to do anything. I probably shouldn’t reveal my weakness.
Love, love, LOVE this post! Totally agree with agreeing – my blood boils when I hear either of these sentences. I HATE cover changes, although, at this point I have SO MANY covers/editions that don’t match that I should have loong given up on this. It’s a huge pain in the butt living in a country where English is not the official language.
When I picked up my first English book I was unbelievably surprised by how much more expensive hardcovers are. I honestly thought it was all a mistake lol. Hungarian hardcovers are between 3 and 4USD more expensive than paperbacks, unfortunately, most novels are not published in both editions.
HOW I HATE WHEN PEOPLE DAMAGE MY BOOKS. I kinda have it figured out who I can trust 1000% with my babies but I’ve been sorely disappointed in ppl before. It’s the worst when they don’t even realize that damaging a book is a problem.
My mom is ALWAYS saying that it’s just a book and I should calm down! AND SHE READS REGULARLY!!! How does she still fail to understand me is above me.
Wonderful post, Cait! 🙂

RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION FOR BOOKWORMS ALL OVER THE UNIVERSE. HUZZAH! And I hate cover changes mostly too. D: Like sometimes they’re okay??? But I don’t know if it’s just me not liking change, or re-designers being melons — BUT I REALLY GET ALL IN A KNOT WHEN IT HAPPENS.
Oh it’s the same in Australia! The USA has ridiculously cheap books, I HOPE THEY APPRECIATE IT.😭
Agh, clearly your mother needs educating on the ferocious feels that is the bookworm life. (Maybe she needs to read a book with a dreaded cliffhanger?!😂)
Ooo, the cover thing. I can’t remember what series I was collecting when they did that…I think it was the Uglies series (which I loved back then but don’t now). Originally, there were faces on the covers, and now it’s like people being covered by white sheets or an arm with lines drawn on it. TOTALLY FRUSTRATING. My copy of Specials has a different design than my copy of Pretties and Uglies.
The sticker thing, too, is frustrating. It used to be agonizing, but now it’s just frustrating. I found out if you blow dry the sticker for like twenty seconds the grippy glue stuff doesn’t stick to the book anymore and you can just peel it off without any problems.
UGH I FEEL THE PAIN. I have 3 editions of Divergent, not that it’s a cover switch, just that I won all different copies and I think I would like to collapse screaming now.
“You can’t buy anymore books, you don’t have anymore shelf space.”
AND YOUR POINT IS?!
That’s what the folding table is for, and the tops of bookshelves, and the beside table, and any other darn place I can figure out to stack books!
GET MORE SHELVES <--- perfectly logical response. I mean, you can also thump them with a book, but we have to be careful of our books. *nods* ALSO THE FLOOR. The floor is free and boring and waiting for books.
If there was anymore room in this house for a shelf, it would be taken up by said shelf already. 😀 I might start stacking those too, actually, They’re pretty steady once they’re weighed down by dozens of pounds of paper. 😀
THESE SENTENCES HURT ME.
““SO I HAD A SMALL ACCIDENT WITH YOUR BOOK…BUT IT JUST LOOKS WELL-LOVED NOW, RIGHT?!”” Most. Painful. Thing. Ever. DON’T HURT MY BABIES!!!!
Oh my goodness. Well, RIP extra sister. That’s what happens when you give spoilers. People get hurt.
IT IS. The only person who can hurt my babies is ME and even then if it happens it’s a tragic accident and I will feel remorse for 39898 years.
It’s good I have a lot of sisters, *nods* because I tend to go through them very fast with all these book wreckers in their midst. Omg.
I LOVE THIS POST. It’s so comforting to know there are more people out there who feel this way about books. <3 A friend of mine borrowed my copy of Throne of Glass to take with her on a trip to England, and when she came she said "yeah, there's some rain damage". O_O It's not horrifically horrific (to use your words), but it's not pretty either. She offered to buy me a new copy and then I sAID NO FOR SOME REASON??? Maybe I'll get back to her on that…
Anne @ Books Baking and Blogging recently posted…What I’ve Been Up To
Horrifically horrific is DEFINITELY the only way to respond to that situation. BUT OMG WHY DID YOU SAY NO, ANNE???? THE CORRECT ANSWER TO THAT IS ALWAYS YES.
Honestly, I related to all of these, especially numbers 1,2, and 6. WHY ARE BOOKS SO EXPENSIVE?! THIS IS WHY I OWN HARDLY ANY BOOKS. NOT ENOUGH MONEY! Because for some reason, I am convinced that I’ll want these books when I’m 60 years old, (mainly so my grand kids can read them) and if I want the books to last me that long, I’ll need to buy hard covers! So I try to buy only hard cover, which is very expensive, ergo, I don’t own many books.
UGH the Winner’s Curse cover changes were so ugly I had a heart attack. Thank the gods they didn’t go through with them.

OMG I AGREE. I mean, yes, I want to support authors, but it burns me to my very SOUL to know that it costs less to buy a freakish movie ticket than a book sometimes. *dies a little on the inside* And dude, no shame in wanting a library. I want to live in a house completely filled with books. <3
I'M SO GLAD THEY LISTENED TO THE OUTRAGE ABOUT THE WINNER'S CURSE. *stamps foot* I've never seen such cheap and nasty covers. UGH.
ALL OF THESE. I AGREE WITH ALL OF THESE. And also, I like “well-loved” looking books, but I don’t want OTHER PEOPLE TO MESS WITH MY CHILDREN. That is why I DON’T let people borrow my books. (It’s kind of like the relationship I have with my brother: I mess with him, but YOU CANNOT MESS WITH HIM OR I WILL STAB YOU WITH A SPORK).
Ahem. Anyway, series that don’t have matching covers annoys me to no end. Like, it BOTHERS me. HOW CAN I SHOW PEOPLE MY BOOKSHELF IF SERIES DON’T MATCH I ASK YOU.
Also, I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE (read: my parents) TELL ME IT’S “JUST A BOOK” and that I’m “TOO INVESTED IN FICTIONAL THINGS”, AND THEN TURN AROUND AND TALK ABOUT HOW THEY’RE WORRIED FOR LORD GRANTHAM’S HEALTH ON DOWNTOWN ABBEY.
But also, people that tell me the book was better than the movie make me more SAD than angry, tbh. LIKE, I LITERALLY FEEL SORRY FOR THEM AND WHAT THEY’RE MISSING OUT ON. My literal ONE exception to this rule was the Paper Towns movie. I liked the book, but I loved the movie, and just thought it was more concise.
Excellent post as always, Em
EXACTLY! It’s completely different when you damage a book yourself. Borrowing and lending is like a SACRED THING OF TRUST AND WHEN THAT TRUST IS BROKEN, ALL IS DOOMED. *collapses dramatically* *sharpens sporks*
It honestly bothers me a lot when my book series don’t match either. I have 3 Divergent books ALL in different editions. 💔 I cannot even.
HAHHA. Omg, your parents.😂 Non-reading-people are so hard to put up with sometimes tho, right?! We must explain so PATIENTLY and yet they refuse to be educated.
AHHHHH! What? The cover for Like a River Glorious was REVEALED?! Where have I been? Under a rock! What’s wrong with me?!?!
*fangirls*
It’s LOVELY! Just like this post. As long as we never hear any of those things ever said. -.-
ISN’T IT SUFFOCATINGLY BEAUTIFUL THOUGH?!?! *hyperventilates with the gorgeousness*
Exactly! You know, I’m still upset about the cover redesign for The Curse Workers series by Holly Black….why did they have to do that right before the release of the final book?! Also, I need that Unknown Benefactor now. 🙂
UGH I didn’t even know they redesigned the Curseworker books. BUT STILL. ULTIMATE CRUELTY. *cries with you*
Oh, this list. So, yesterday/today I had a social thingy at my church (ugh!), but I got to talk about books! The first thing I said to my friend, was “Have you read the Maze Runner?” She said only the first one, but her friend told her a major spoiler (and continued to tell me), THOUGH I HAVEN’T FINISHED THE SERIES!!!! ACK!! ALSO, I just got a book in the mail today, and my little brother said: “Don’t you already have enough books??” GAH!! WHAT EVEN??!!!
OMG. THAT IS THE WORST!!! Especially if SHE was spoiled for it…you’d think she’d be careful right? And omg, I got spoiled for The Maze Runner too, so the pain is real. I understand. *cries with you* It put me off finishing the series for mONTHS.
Under a Painted Sky had a cliffhanger? Hmmm… I must’ve missed that!
But it does suck when books that are obviously the first part of a series turn out to be stand-alones because the publisher didn’t commit to the whole series (seriously… don’t do that). I’m still waiting for the sequel to My Name Is Memory…
And pushing back release dates… Ugh! It just makes me want the book more and more and my hopes get built up even higher… and then if the book turns out to be not that great I wonder why I spent all that time wishing for it.
You didn’t think it ended so openly?!? I did.😂 I mean it wasn’t a hanging-off-a-literal-cliff-by-your-teeth, but it definitely didn’t conclude!!
I’m WAITING FOR THE FINALE OF MAGGIE STIEFVATER’S FAERIE SERIES. *howls*
While I’m reading a book…”Whatcha reading?” 🙂
YES. UGH. I’d throw the book at them for emphasis, but…reading it. *nods*
Oh my gosh. The truth of all of this is tangible. Publishers are torturous human beings whose weapons are stickers and covers. WHYYY? Ugh. I also CANNOT STAND IT when people come up to me and ask me about my book & THEN SPOIL IT! If I wanted to talk to you about it, I wouldn’t spoil it for you so don’t ruin it for me. Okay? Okay. Hahah
Publishers probably do it on purpose in order to see the delight that is readers running around like anxious headless chickens of despair. #legit
“It is just a book,” always makes me think about a movie quote that says ‘yes, and hell is just a sauna’
SPOILERS ARE THE WORST. I get really mad when people do that to me.
Pushing back the release date is such a sad, sad happening 🙁
omggg. YES to that quote!😂 Perfect reaction to it, honestly. AHEM. And spoilers…agh. Hell is just a sauna for people who spoil books. *growls*
“You know how I said I have 4 sisters? WELL. TRUTH IS I USED TO HAVE MORE OF THEM BUT NOW THERE ARE LESS.*
* I’m joking. Maybe.”
I know I shouldn’t but this kinda made me laugh…. haha.
I wholeheartedly agree with all of these. Yes.
IT’S OKAY TO LAUGH. YOU’RE NOT IN ANY DANGER OF MY FEARSOME WRATH UNLESS YOU ARE MY SISTER.😇
I KNEW there was going to be one here about having enough books. Like, why do people think it’s okay to ask that!? Also, if I was making this list, I’d make it, “It’s not okay to say ANYTHING to a bookworm. Because they’re likely reading. If you interrupt this, you deserve the death they will likely inflict upon you.”
You don’t know how many times people have started a conversation while I’m reading!
OMGGGG YES. JUST DON’T TALK WHILE WE’RE READING. I need that on a teeshirt, or better yet, painted on my door. *heavy sigh* I also hate when people see me reading and go “oh since you’re not busy can you…” I cannot.
I guess people that don’t read wouldn’t understand- to them it looks like we’re staring blankly at a piece of paper. Probably looking lonely
BUT IN REALITY WE ARE ON MARVELLOUS ADVENTURES. HUZZAH!
I guess that’s why we can sometimes be just a little socially awkward. “I have DRAGONS to KILL I don’t WANT TO hear what you ate for breakfast!!”
HAHAHAH YES THIS IS PERFECT.😂
Ha! I agree on all of these because how could I not??? Lovely list 🙂
Aw, thank you, Grace!! *flails* I’m glad you liked it.😂
I never ever lend books to anybody. Ok, sometimes, but I need to know this person very closely and even then I am hesitant. And even if I decide to lend the book, I inform the person strongly I want it back in the same condition. It happened to me when I lend Harry Potter to my friend and she gave it back to me with a stain because she was eating while reading. Now it’s part of well-loved series, but back then I was mad.
I hate redesigns of covers in the middle of the series, it’s just pure evil.
I also hate when there is an amazing book but there’s only hardcover on Bookdepository and it’s expensive as hell and hello… there is paperback coming out… in 200 days! That is the purest form of torture. No. The purest form of torture is when there is sequel coming out and there is no sign of paperback on Bookdepository again and I’m panicking because what if it won’t be in paperback? (Yes, I’m talking about you, The Conspiracy of Us. Btw, amazing book about secret society, spies, badass Russian boys and prophecies. Just in case you haven’t read it 😀 ). Oh, being a bookworm is sooo difficult and exhausting.
But I think I can relate to all of your points and it’s just madness, especially spoilers. 🙂

Dude, I won’t even lend to my FAMILY anymore.😂 They have wrecked FAR TOO MANY OF MY PRECIOUS BABY BOOKS NOW. I also can’t even stand eating-while-reading in case of tragedy like that. Ugh. Stains on books are true tragedy.
Omg, I HATE it when there is no option between the hardcover vs paperback. Like. WHY? Why can’t they publish both together?! OMG. And I hate it when it’s like a YEAR until the other option comes out. CUE TEARS AND FRUSTRATION.
(Oh I haven’t read The Conspiracy of Us yet!! DID YOU SAY BADASS RUSSIAN BOYS?!?! *signs self up*)
Yes to ALL of these! Oh I love this post! The last one is a sore spot for me. I really hate when people ask have you got to….Thank you for bringing a spoiler to my attention! I think that has to be the number one for me, especially when they something like “has anyone died yet?”
Great post!

http://bookstothetea.blogspot.com/
Omg, yes. UGH. They should really ask WHERE you are first. That’s the only way to do it. *flaps about wildly* It’s just asking for devastating otherwise.😭
OH MY GOSH ALL OF THIS. Just…just…no.
Do I have enough books?! Um, is the world flat?! Because NO I do NOT have enough books, thank you very much.
This is the bane of my existence! Hearing that a release date has been pushed back makes me want to curl up in a fetal position and cry for days. Oh, the sorrow of it all…
By far my BIGGEST book pet peeve is lending a book to someone and having it come back in less-than-mint-condition. People don’t seem to understand that they are my babies! Like, would I take your child and do what you do to my books???? I try to act all chill and say “it’s fine,” but inwardly, I just want to blow up a building or something. It’s bad… 😛
Also, THERE IS NO CALM WHEN THERE ARE BOOKS. And, gosh, don’t even get me started on the prices of hardcovers.
My heart is crushed whenever I see the words “closed” at a bookstore or library. LIKE WHAT I NEED MORE BOOKS RIGHT NOW. (Also, am I the only one who thinks libraries should be open later at night? My night owlish persona thinks yes.)
One thing I would add to the list is when librarians cover up the synopses of books. You know, when they either put a sticker or a little folder thingy RIGHT ON TOP OF THE SYNOPSIS? Seriously, there isn’t ANY other place on the book you could place that?!
Okay. Rant over. As you were.
Mary Horton recently posted…Lovely Books ~ Quotes
YES YES PERFECT ANSWER! I usually go “you are wasting oxygen saying these words” and, ya know, break a plate or storm off flipping my hair tragically and majestically. As you do.
OMG AND YES I HATE LENDING FOR THAT EXACT REASON. In fact, I refuse to lend now. I just refuse. It’s hard when it’s family too, and they don’t care and aghhh, they just think you’re a book lending factory?! NOT ANYMORE. My books are my precious darlings and never leave my room now.😂
OH DUDE YES. The librarians with covering up synopsises with stickers or whatever! ARGGHGHGH.
“Don’t you think you have enough books now?” is like telling an author “Don’t you think you’ve written enough books now?” and we all know how ridiculous THAT sounds.
There is absolutely a difference between destroying a book yourself (a.k.a. loving it too hard) and someone else ruining it.
To be honest, I’m more than okay with TRK being pushed back. It’s called denial.
Um, there actually isn’t anything more to life than books, although delicious food comes close.
I pity anyone who says it’s “just” a book. What a sad life they must lead.
STICKERS ON BOOKS ARE THE WORST THING EVER. That falls under “cruel and unusual punishment.”
Lolll, are you really joking about your sister? My dad is the WORST at this. He’s so oblivious when talking about books we’ve both read or that he’s read and I’ve not yet finished.
Another phrase I never like to hear is “Can I just interrupt you for a minute?” YOU ALREADY DID AND NOW MY CONCENTRATION IS LOST. *glares at everyone*
AGREED and AGREED. If the authors are going to keep writing, it’s out duty to keep reading. What else can we do? WE MUST READ EVERYTHING. *hyperventilates quietly* And I’m so glad you agree about the difference between harming-books-yourself vs others-doing-it. 😂 IT’S CRUEL.
I’m dying over The Raven King. It’s the first time in my LIFE where I wish my town had a bookstore so I could go buy it on release day.😭😭
*whispers* of course I’m not joking about my sister. I also had a sister who horribly damaged a book and then returned it without apology. THAT SISTER IS NO LONGER WITH US EITHER.
Only take one book on a holiday? Who would even dare to utter such a sentence? Could it even be considered a holiday? I have to take at least three even when I know I’ll only have time to read one because CHOICES. I need them. Of course I do also have a Kindle now so there’s that.
I haven’t actually read any cliffhanger-y books that were supposed to be a sequel but haven’t sold yet so far! I do know the pain though, because I fall in love with tv shows only to find out they’ve been cancelled ALL THE TIME.
And yes stickers what even. And the ones that LOOK like stickers but are on the actual cover and can’t be peeled off!?? Devilry. Oh also movie book covers. If I want the movie pic I’ll buy the DVD thank you very much.
Basically yes to all of these!
I AGREE. BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT BEFORE. My parents probably rue the day they bought a caravan though and I realised that I could like take only two outfits and use the rest of my shelfspace for books. <3 Kindles are WONDERFUL for holidays. Except for the power thing. Running out of battery in the middle of a book is CRUEL.
And I haven't had the tragedy of watching a TV show that's been cancelled. Plenty that have ended though! SADNESS. LIFE IS SO UNFAIR.
These were all toooo real omg.
My personal solution for only being able to bring one book with me on holiday is just taking a really long book, like a Song Of Ice And Fire or Kingkillers Chronicles novel or something. Like, April 2015 I went to Prague with college for 4 days and I couldn’t bring a load of books, so I just brought A Clash Of Kings by George R R Martin, which is 1009 pages. Problem solved hahhaa
I also HATE it when they put stickers on the cover, like discounts or ”soon to be a tv series or also watch the movie blablabla” NO JUST NO OKAY I DON’T WANT YOUR STUPID STICKER
And the thing I like even less is when you THINK there is a sticker on a book, but it’s actually printed ONTO the paper of the cover and I just want to cry in a corner for the rest of eternity…
Xx Amber, from http://thenamelessbookblog.blogspot.nl/
OH OH THAT IS A GLORIOUS LOOPHOLE. 😂 And GRRM’s books are perfect for that, because, omg, they are huge (intimidating) beasts.
AGH, and the “soon to be a movie” ones get me so much, because half the time the movie is horrible and I don’t even want to be reminded it exists. *cries*
I HATE ‘maybe you should stop buying books’ LIKE NO! I won’t and I can’t and it’s not happening! I work hard to have enough money to pay my rent and buy my books (cause lol that’s like 90% of what my pay goes to haha) and I should be able to do it judgement free goddammit! Great post as usual 😊😊

*pets shoulder* You’re welcome for all these horrifying images. SLEEP WELL.
I actually prefer paperbacks because they’re easier to carry. I am guilty of spilling juice on someone’s book. Bury me now. Spoilers are probably the bane of every bookworms life. People just can’t help it, can they? The other problems with spoilers are MOVIES! They just are so much worse than the book and just spoil ALL the good parts, and they leave out the minor details. Spoilers are sooo bad. And I think people are getting WORSE at keeping them. aRGHGHHGHGHG.
How’s this one? My students are allowed to borrow books from my classroom library, since that is why is exists, obviously. But one girl borrowed two graphic novels (which is to say, two EXPENSIVE books) and took forever to return them. Then she finally told me–she’d left them in the trunk of her car. Where her sister has spilled a milkshake. Where they then remained for another week, covered in melting milkshake. She tried to revive one of them to return it, but it STANK.
And THEN–“Miss, can I borrow this hardback copy of Wonder that you bought to replace the one someone lost last year?” she asks. THAT’S what I don’t want to hear. Because, yet again, the reason why the library exists is so kids will read. So it’s a quandary.
OMGGGGG. Did you lend her Wonder?!?! Did she have to pay for the ruined books?! Honestly, sometimes I really hate libraries because people seem to have ZERO respect for books if they don’t own them. *cries* It’s not fair! It’s not considerate to others! I HATE STICKY/RUINED LIBRARY BOOKS.
OH THOSE STICKERS KILL ME. I don’t even buy books with them because I”ve decided to boycott in the hopes that publishers will pay attention to me. #likely
ALTHOUGH I do like my books well-loved. Unless other people decide to make them well-loved (like when my sister dropped my book on the side of the road and there was a storm, so it got washed all the way down the street…I’m not over it).
I’m sure the publishers will DEFINITELY take note of this. *nods* And, ironically, I just got sent a review-copy that had the PRINTED ON kind of sticker on the front. *howls in aghast* PUBLISHERS ARE PROBABLY LAUGHING AT OUR PAIN RIGHT NOW, TBH.
I wouldn’t be over that either. Sisters. What are we even supposed to do with them? Merp.
This post gave me quite a chuckle as EVERYTHING is true. Especially the loaning a book back, and they return it “loved”. Aggh that would murder my soul – books are expensive! Lovely post, Cait. It’s awesome 🙂
THEY ARE!! Books are our precious expensive baby children, omg.
Ewww do not change covers unless you’ve already made a whole series PUHLEASE!
But I love paperbacks though! They’re cheaper and easier to carry!!!
Stickers on the front…. no just no…
Also, don’t tell them they need to put the book down to eat/look at the scenery/use the facilities.
And never, ever, ever put a bookworm down for reading below their level! (You know what, it’s called a reread!!! Sorry, personal pet peeve :D)
AGREED. Really…why do they even think about changing them mid-series? TORMENTERS. *cries piteously*
I am a bit of a hardcover obsessor…but paperbacks are more convenient sometimes that’s for sURE.😂
and tRUE TRUE! I don’t like people saying “aren’t you too old for that”. A good book doesn’t have an age-limit.

omg sarah dessen and Stephanie Perkins are definitely #1. they KEEP redoing their covers. I’m almost tempted to stop buying Sarah’s books (lol jk) because she keeps redoing her covers every 10 minutes. smh.
my mom tries to pull #2 on me, sometimes. she’s like: “i think you need to stop now.” because I buy mine online a lot in bunches. but im just like: “yeah, sure.”
when release dates are pushed OMFG. I was legitimately crushed when ISLA was pushed back a few years ago. haha. I no longer lend my books out. (sorry people) I lent Breaking Dawn out a few years ago a friend in high school and she returned it with a tear in the cover, and I lent a book I wasn’t too fond of, anyway, to another friend and she never returned it. a few days ago, my sister accidentally took one of my books – I was reading it at the time, too IMAGINE MY DEVASTATION – but she took surprisingly good care of it., so I was like: phew.

Omg, they do, don’t they?!😳😱 I honestly haven’t collected either of their books so at least I haven’t been caught yet but ARGH IT CAN BE SO FRUSTRATING.
Sometimes we just have to sigh and put up with parents. *sad face*
My sister bought me a book for Christmas, then borrowed it, THEN RETURNED IT WITH A BENT COVER.
LEAST TO SAY I NO LONGER HAVE THAT SISTER.I don’t lend books anymore basically.Yes! I hate it when covers change mid series or the size, every time I look at my Bloodlines series I get sad all over again as the last book is just half a centimeter higher and it’s horrible. And don’t even talk about VA, that series has 4 if not 5 different covers/ sizes and only has 6 books, not good. And those stickers are the worst, I usually can remove them very carefully, but sometimes they are part of the cover and can’t be removed. Also when ordering online the books usually don’t have stickers, so yay for that.
And I cringe sometimes when reading old reviews as I am not sure I would feel the same now or the review is just horrible and I don’t want to remove them either, but what if someone reads a book on an old recommendation? That’s weird too.
And I hate spoilers, I got accidentally spoiled for the newest star wars movie when looking for someone’s post on twitter. I know people want to talk about thing that happen in a book or movie, but please use secret groups or spoiler tags and not anywhere everyone can see it.
And I buy paperbacks for that exact reason, they are cheaper. Except for Kelley Armstrong her books as I am not waiting a whole extra year to read her books so I can read them cheaper.
I don’t lend out books anymore for that reason, no one is ever as careful with my books as I want them to, can’t blame them, it’s all on me. I only lend out books that i didn’t enjoy as much and don’t mind if they get ruined a bit. Great post!

AGH I HEAR YA. My Mortal Instruments series is two heights and it BREAKS MY PRECIOUS SOUL.💔 And when the sticker is actually part of the cover…ugh. *shudders* It is perpetually evil.
Same though!! I don’t want to remove my old reviews, but I’m 99% sure I wouldn’t think the same of them if I read them now.😂
AGH YES. I hate the “accidental spoilers”…I got ruined for all of the Maze Runner from just scrolling on pinterest. I wasn’t even on a Maze Runner board! IT’S NOT FAIR. PEOPLE NEED TO BE MORE CAREFUL.
OH. MY. GAWD. ALL THE YES TO BASICALLY EVERYTHING ON THIS LIST. I get so protective of my books, I hate lending them out but my mum thinks because I had a mini library, that she can treat it as such and tell EVERY SINGLE FAMILY FRIEND to come and borrow some books. Like no, there are libraries for a reason. And mine is not a library.
Also the cover changes irk me so much. WHY. If it’s selling well and half the bookworld is praising the covers, why the hell would you change it? Too often the people at publishing houses that make these decisions are so out of touch with what is being said around the internet. They need to better accustom themselves to what is popular, rather than jump and make decisions because they think it’s a good choice.
And lastly, totally agree about changing reading tastes. Mine has evolved so much since I first started blogging around 3 and a half years ago. Sometimes I cringe at what I used to like. But that’s also a good thing, it’s good to have you tastes evolve so you can ENJOY more books that you once never thought you’d try. Amazing post Cait!

I honestly think publishers sometimes ARE very out-of-touch with their market. Like with the whole The Winner’s Curse debacle, I think they just saw the Game of Thrones selling better and thought they’d copy it. *breaks a plate*
SAME! I feel like all my 5-star reads of 3-years ago would probably be…four…or three stars now.😂
People are always asking me if I have enough books, “I will never have enough!“ I scream from atop my hoard of hardcovers.
That is a good thing to scream. I highly approve of that scream. I WILL SCREAM THAT FROM NOW ON TOO.
Hahaha I have never had anyone returned a book to me that was mangled and call it well-loved, but I can only imagine. I would take said well-loved book and throw it at their face. Then their face could be well-loved too.
As for taking books on vacations, I don’t think my parents ever restricted me to one book? I think they preferred I have something to entertain myself rather than bother them lol. And I always brought my “Mary Poppins purse” because it could hold such much more than it looked like from the outside, including large books 🙂
And yes to the tastes changing thing! I actually have not yet posted reviews for one of my absolute favorite series because I’m afraid that it might not actually be as great as I thought it was when I first read it, and then I don’t want to recommend it to people and have them blame me when they don’t like it. So I’m waiting until the final book comes out to reread and then post reviews. I went off on a bit of a tangent, but it’s still relevant to what you said lol.

I have had it happen to me several times…aghhhhgh. Mangled is NOT well loved. *howls* This is why I never lend books now… ;D
Good for you having a Mary Poppins purse. XD I needed one of those, omg…the best thing was when our parents bought a caravan and we could either put our clothes neatly in draws or fill the draws with books. Um, it’s probably easy to guess what I did…
I’m going to re-read some old favourites this year too so I can be sure I still love them. THE TERROR OF CHANGING TASTES IS REAL. *flails tragically*
I can officially decree that this is the best post of ALL TIME! I mean AAAAH! You’ve got this SPOT ON, and I hugged my book and went out to my bookshelf and just stared at the wonders on my shelf after. Sigh.
The worst part? Publishers DO NOT publish hardcovers in my country. *Falls on floor and dies*
Aditi recently posted…Introduction Post + Stacking The Shelves #6 – The One With One Book, A Design and One Person
OMG no hardcovers at all!?!? *cries for you* THAT IS JUST A HORRIFIC TRAGEDY.😭 My country is the opposite and we barely EVER get books in hardcover unless they’re international authors or imported books. WHY CAN’T THE BOOKWORM LIFE BE FAIR.
I LOVED this post! So relatable! <3
"Why read the book the book? You can just watch the movie" says a person. THAT SENTENCE IS THE WORST. The book is ALWAYS better, so shut up, person.
OHHHH YES THAT SENTENCE IS PURE EVIL. *breaks a plate* How dare they even suggest that the two are comparable.
“You can only take one book with you on this holiday”
This is a good thing. It means that you are given the okay to spend everyday of your holiday exploring the place’s bookstores so that you can find “something to read, because I’ve already finished the book I brought with me”. This works wonderfully especially if you bring with you a book that you know you will finish quickly, but no one expected you to finish THAT quickly. Can you spell sly for me?
Oh, and by the way I will be mentioning you on today’s post later tonight. I just love your blog!
Yeah! Wherever I travel, I make a point to explore the bookshops and buy something awesome.

“You’ve been in this bookstore too long. Don’t you want to go explore the city?”
BOOKSHOPS ARE MY CITIES OKAY!
BOOKSHOPS ARE ENTIRE UNIVERSES IN A STORE OMG.
Haha love these! I’m a three book physical copy girl when I go on holiday. I know I should probably get a kindle but nah..
*whispers* Because we all know physical books are BETTER THOUGH. <3
I hate it when publishers change covers mid-series. I hate it with passion and it always discourages me to collect printed version of such series. And don’t even start me on bonus cover label on front covers. Last year I bought End of Days by Susan Ee and it had Angelfall label on it and ruined whole cover. Why don’t they use stickers instead so we can take them off???????
Lucia @Reading Is My Breathing recently posted…REVIEW: INTO THE DIM BY JANET B. TAYLOR (OR HOW I VOWED NOT TO READ YA TIME TRAVEL NOVELS EVER AGAIN)
STICKERS ON BOOKS ARE JUST FRESH EVIL THAT NEED TO BE DESTROYED.😭
This post is awesome, Cait! I am BUGGED by cover changes. I don’t collect books, and cover changes mid-series won’t make me stop reading, or mean I have to buy the previous books with the new covers… but it does annoy me! I would prefer to have covers that matched! AND SIZES, CAIT! Have you seen the size of Glass Sword in comparison to Red Queen? It’s humongous. Looking at the books with the covers facing you, Glass Sword is taller and wider. Whyyyy?! It’s also annoying.
Also, when there are no sequels! Fortunately, this has never happened to me about a series I love. But Strange Chemisty, who were publishing Laura Lam’s Micah Grey series, went out of business before the final book was published! :O! Fortunately, the series was picked up by Pan Macmillan, and they’re republishing all of the books, so people will have the final book. (The series now has a new name, I believe, the Dark Circus series). I loved the first book, but felt let down by the second, so I wasn’t too bothered when Strange Chemistry went down on a personal level. But with a new publisher comes new covers. So… some people are going to have an incomplete set there. Poor peoples.

UGH YES. The struggle is real. *cries* I do collect books and mismatched series honestly break my heart. ALSO SIZES. I haven’t seen the Glass Sword vs Red Queen yet but that’s horrifying. I’m still crying over my The Mortal Instruments series which is in two sizes.😭
Omg, I LOVE your posts! Whenever people say these things to me, I’m either a) horrified, b) shocked, c) side-eyeing them, or d) all of the above. I think the worst for me is either the spoilers one or the “well-loved” one. I relate to the “well-loved” one so much because my book actually got water damaged less than 24 hours ago and my mom said *shudders* “Well, at least it’s well loved!” NO, IT’S DAMAGED. THERE IS NO SENTIMENT WITH THAT. I also hate when people say:
“Isn’t that a movie?” No, it’s a book but ok sure.
“You buy so many books!” Actually, I don’t (I get them for review or gifted) and if I do I compare the book on 10,000 sites to get the best price so there’s that.
and the worst:
*me reading favorite book ever*
friend: “OMG, I HATE THAT BOOK SO MUCH! IT’S SO OVERRATED.”
ok, bye we aren’t friends then.

And YUS to all your reactions. Me = 100% too. Ugh, the non-readers do try our patience ever so much. *heavy sigh* And omg "damaged" and "well loved" are NOT THE SAME AND WILL NEVER EVER BE. Like reading a book so much it falls apart is a beautiful thing of love. DAMAGING A BOOK WITH WATER OR FIRE OR SPIDERS IS NOT.
My sister did the "oh I didn't know it was a book" to a movie she watched recently and a small part of me died. (READ THE BOOK FIRST. ALWAYS.)
Zomg, but yes and ARGH to the "I hate that book" to one you love. I legit had someone ask me my favourite book, had me reply with The Hunger Games, and then they PROCEEDED TO TELL ME HOW MUCH THEY HATE IT AND HOW DISGUSTING IT IS AND OMG I COULDN'T EVEN STAND THERE. I THINK I JUST WALKED AWAY BECAUSE THAT IS RUDE.
“The release date has been pushed back…again.” LITERALLY JUST HAPPENED A FEW MONTHS AGO! SCREAM!!!!!
But seriously, the sequel to my second favorite book EVER was supposed to be released in mid January, but now I have to wait till April (which actually isn’t that far away, but it was a nightmare months ago)
Also the phrase “get out of that book and go play outside” is always killer. and (says the library) “I’m sorry, but we don’t have the sequel to that book, even though you loved it more than life”
IT’S LITERALLY KEEPING ON HAPPENING TO ME WITH BOOKS I REALLY WANT. We can weep together. 😭 CAKE IS THE ONLY THING TO HELP US IN THIS TIME. Ahem.
IS it The Raven King?!?! BECAUSE I’M FREAKING OUT ABOU THOW LONG IT’S TAKING THE RAVEN KING TO COME OUT. I WANT TO CRY.😭😭😭 I LOVE THAT SERIES SO SO FREAKISHLY MUCH.
WHY WOULD ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND THINK IT’S OKAY TO PUT STICKERS ON A BOOK?! Is it a sticker book? Um, no. That drives me crazy. Especially if it’s one of those stickers that are perforated at a bazillion different angles. It looks like it’s supposed to peel easy, but in truth its a bookworm torture device.
I appreciate how most secondhand bookshops write the price on the inside cover of the book in PENCIL. These are true book lovers who know how to cherish words.
“There’s actually more to life than books.” Obviously said by a non-reader who has not experienced worthy books in their life. Therefore their statement is invalid and unfounded. Why do they think they know what their talking about?
Awesome list!
I AGREE. It is just plain evil. The minds behind it ought to be severely glared at. SEVERELY, I tell you. And when are stickers EVER easy to peel off?! Worse is when they’re PRINTED ON THE COVER, BUT LOOK LIKE STICKERS. OMG. STAHP EVERYTHING. I CANNOT HANDLE THIS MONSTROSITY.
*hyperventilates*
Ahem.
Agreed about the secondhand bookshops. They are wise beings and ought to be thanked.
The things we have to put up with from non-readers…. *heavy sigh*
YESS. When someone sais: Keep calm it’s just a book or Why you are sad? They’re only fictional I HATE IT. I’m not a violent person but if they continue I’m probably going to begin to shout and get really angry…

IT’S OUR LIFE: happiness, sadness, love, hate JUST EVERYTHING
Ha. SO ACCURATE. SO TRUE.
Also, when an publishing outlet gets bought up by another one and then they decide not to publish the rest of an author’s books in the series even though they’ve been written and the author can’t get the rights back to self-publish…
YEAH. That happened to me with Sarah Beth Durst’s adult UF series. (And I think some authors from Strange Chemistry as well.) Still disappointed!

All of these are SOOOO true. And with #3, my best friend and I have some problems. Man, sometimes I wonder why she’s my best friend (well she’s actually really hilarious and awesome so yeah), but WE DEFINITELY DISAGREE ON BOOKS. I lent her my GORGEOUS new copy of City Of Bones, and within the first 10 minutes, she had bent the cover – a minor bend, but STILL. WHYYYY! (also I’m okay with dog-earing because bookmarks, though pretty, are pains in the butt.)
That is awesome that you’re still friends…THE LAST PERSON WHO BENT MY BOOK IS IN THE GROUND. (Okay, I’m slightly kidding. But stiiiiiill.)
Oh my word, THIS POST IS GOLD. <333 It is so perfect. I love you Cait. XD
Dying over the sticker one. SO MUCH TRUTH!
Erm… I now have a massive amount of guilt for occasionally reading books people recommend, 3 years later… at the earliest. *shifty eyes* I feel really bad BUT I HAVE SO MANY BOOKS DEMANDING MY ATTENTION FIRST AND OTHERS' RECS DON'T ALWAYS TAKE TOP PRIORITY. I feel bad though. I do. *sniffle*
Yet another perfect and hilarious post! 😀
Omg, hehe, I just worry about the reading-books-years-after-they’ve-been-recommended because *I* feel like my tastes will have changed and I ALSO WON’T BE ABLE TO REMEMBER THE BOOK VERY WELL. #awkward
I’m glad you liked the post!! 😀 *awards self with cake*
This is too excellent. Ah, Cait, you wonderful human being. I 100% agree with you on everything here and that is final. My personal favourite (favourite as in ARGHGHGHFHFJF) is when someone says you don’t need to buy a book because you have too many. Man, people just don’t understand. When I ask for you opinion whilst I’m deciding to buy a book, the correct answer is YES WHAT A GOOD IDEA. None of this … but how many books do you still have to read on your shelf though? *sits heavily in a corner and sulks*
Why thank you, Kirstie. 😀 OMG BUT SOME PEOPLE JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND THE BOOKWORM WAY, DO THEY? It’s so terrible. *stamps foot* How dare they assume they understand our needs when THEY DEFINITELY DON’T.
Ahh I can relate to some of these so much! xD Haha with regards to ‘sequel not being bought by publishers’ – I had that experience when I read and loved the first two books of Michael Pryor’s EXTRAORDINAIRES series, and found out that the rest of the series is ‘on hold’ for now 🙁 WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO US, PUBLISHERS? Same thing happened with the Moon and Sun trilogy by Holly Lisle, but the author is hopefully going to self-publish it ‘soon’.
And being told I can only take one book on a holiday? Hahaha yes that’s happened to me before too.
That’s interesting regarding Under a Painted Sky – I got the impression that it was intended to be open-ended? I’d definitely appreciate a sequel, though.
AGHHHHHH. THAT IS SO TORTUROUS. I FEEL YOUR PAIN. 😭 I’ve been waiting 7 years for a series finale. SEVEN YEARS. It’s come to the point where I just am not able to even.
(I was emailing the author and I felt like she indicated there’d be a sequel maybe one day. 😉 But maybe not also. :P)
Oh YES!! I love this list because I have heard some of these things and they always make me so angry! And there is NO SUCH THING as having enough books. That’s crazy talk. I am such a fast reader that I am constantly going through books. My husband mentioned once that if I am not careful, I will run out of things to read. Umm, really? I just had to laugh. Between my TBR and ARCs and all the new books being published EVERY DAY, there is literally no chance of that. Oh, and there is a sequel I have been waiting on and I swear, the release date for the sequel has been pushed back FIVE TIMES. The book came out three years ago, for crying out loud! So infuriating.

I’ve been waiting 7 years for Maggie Stiefvater’s fairy series conclusion.😭
OMG, yes, yes, yes. Changing the design of a series halfway through = hell on earth. If you want to update the cover, wait until all parts of the series are released, and then do it. Or better yet, don’t do it all. Stickers = EWW. I don’t care about bonus content, I don’t want stickers. Also ,release dates eons in the future are a big NO please NO.

OMO CAIT YOU ARE HILARIOUS. I just curled over my desk and laughed so hard.
YOU THINK I’M JOKING BUT I’M NOT MWHAHAHHAHA. *trips on evilness* *falls on face* Ahem.
YES. All of these. And that Anastasia GIF sums up my reaction perfectly. Honestly, I feel bad for people who don’t understand bookworm culture. They’re missing out on such a beautiful, painful life, and they don’t even realize it. But publishers who change the cover design mid-series probably have a special place in hell dedicated just for them. They probably aren’t even human–I imagine they’re just Satan’s emissaries sent to torment us all. The same with publishers who don’t buy sequels and publishers who put stickers or other random design things on a perfectly good book cover.
I normally am fine to read spoilers for books, because I don’t care if it’s something I’m choosing to do. But I really hate it when people spoil books for me, especially when they do it on purpose. Like, Allegiant was spoiled for me, and that was just a careless accident. But someone spoiled The Fault in Out Stars for me on purpose, and I was just ordering another book on Amazon, and I happened to glance at the reviews, and someone just randomly spoiled a major detail for no reason. LIKE, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? WHY DO YOU LIKE ROBBING US OF OUR JOY?

I’m sure every publisher has an Evil Creature on their team-who-comes-up-with-all-the-ideas. When I rule the world, I SHALL FIX THIS EVIL.
And SAME! If I choose spoilers — it’s okay. When people tell me spoilers I didn’t ask for — NOT OKAY. I got spoiled for the whole Maze Runner series on pinterest. I WASN’T EVEN ON A MAZE RUNNER PINTEREST BOARD.😭
REDOING the COVERS midway in the series!!! *SCREAMS INTERNALLY FOR DAYS* Gah! HUGE pet peeve of mine! Oh and past experiences lending out books to GOOD friends has led me to consider what good friends mean when they don’t return your books O.O This has henceforth brought on an ”I DON’T LEND OUT BOOKS” clause into my life. It’s unfortunate, but it had to be done. I WILL give away books though, if I end up with multiple copies OR if I didn’t LOVE the book but think a friend might! Oh and NO we NEVER have enough books. Also, we can’t keep calm, we’re readers and we get OBSESSED and FILLED with FEELS!

REDOING THE COVERS DESTROYS LIBRARIES AND HOPE AND WHOLE HUMAN LIVES.😭 I never lend out books….not even to my sisters these days. Gah. My books are my precious things and I AM NOT A PUBLIC LIBRARY.
Re-DOING covers is the WORST. In general. Like even if the entire series is out…even if the new editions ARE better. It’s horrible. Because then I HAVE to have it right? Or like…right in the dang MIDDLE? The last book has a different cover? WHAT THE FRACK?! *The Dark Elements Series* Oohhh man. It steams my cabbage ya know?
Also stickers! Don’t put a fat impossible to peel off sticker on my glorious cover?!?! Of whats WORSE!!! The FAKE sticker which is actually just PRINTED to LOOK like a sticker and therefore impossible to remove?!?! And it’s always silly stuff about bonus content or “Now a major motion picture/tv show blaahhhh”. It takes away from it…I don’t like it.
Also….everything in this post. Just ALL OF IT. SPOT ON.
*cries because feels your pain* There is just NEVER a good enough excuse to do this. Like sure, rebrand the covers: BUT FINISH PUBLISHING THE ORIGINAL COVERS FIRST TOO OMG.
And who even caaaares if there’s a movie on the book, right?! BECAUSE THEY PROBABLY DIDN’T FOLLOW THE BOOK ANYWAY.😭 So much pain.

Ohh, I have the same feeling about lending out books. Once, I gave my brother my copy of Percy Jackson to read and found out weeks later he had lost it…UNTIL HE DIDN’T AND HE GAVE IT BACK TO ME SO WORN THAT THE COVER IMAGE WAS COMPLETELY RUINED AND WORN OFF. I was devastated but luckily, my brother made it up to me by buying me a new copy. Also, pushing release dates back is the bane of my existence. When The Retribution of Mara Dyer was pushed back like, THREE YEARS after the cliff hanger of the prior books, I basically just rocked in a corner and wailed until they finally released it.

But OH MY GOD, ALL OF THESE THINGS! I can’t even pick one as the most relatable, because I RELATE TO THEM ALL SO, SO MUCH! The recommendation-from-3-years-ago and the HORRENDOUSLY HORRENDOUS reviews mortify me the most, though. And I seriously thought I was alone in this! I mean, EVERYONE ELSE WAS FABULOUS 3 YEARS AGO. “how do you even read books, ughhh they are so boring”
“what will you do with all these books”
“The movie was better”
” they are adapting it to a movie”
OMG NONE OF THESE ARE OKAY. THESE ARE ALL TERRIFYING.
I am in SO much agreement with this post! First, I have to say that I am proud of us as a community for not allowing the bad things to happen to The Winner’s Kiss. Because yes, I could have ordered the UK edition (which is what I did the minute I saw those new covers) BUT my other two are HARDCOVER and they would not have MATCHED. Thankfully this is behind us.
And I do agree with every single one of these. I gave my parents a book from BEA, by an author they really liked, and they let a friend borrow it, and she left it on a table by their pool when she was done. And then it RAINED. I should show you the aftermath, you’d cry.
But the WORST, by far, is the incomplete series. Blackhearts cliffhanger, NO. Then there is Victoria Scott’s Fire & Flood and Salt & Storm… but no one bought the third book. So now it’s just… in limbo, and my heart won’t accept that. Now I am scared about Under a Painted Sky, too. This should NEVER be a thing. OOOH have you read Jeyn Roberts’ Dark INside and Rage Within? Biiiig old cliffie, and no sign of book 3 because her publisher had her work on other stuff. OMG- a quick stalking showed that she IS working on it! Well, you somehow just made my day, Cait! Nice work!
Why did all my “I”s disappear? They were there when I pressed “post comment”… huh, looking at other people’s comments, their letter Is are all gone too! That is weird- is it just me, or are you seeing it too?

And we did RULE for our Winner’s Kiss protest.🎉 But what I’m even more impressed of is that those publishers listened. WOO. (And even more proud of the smarter AUS/UK for never changing them in the first place. Sorry.😂)
Dude. THE TEARS WOULD BE REAL FOR THAT. The worst I’ve had is a returned book coming back with a mangled-bent cover, which was hard enough, but at least I could still use it. RAINED ON BOOKS ARE NOT OKAY. IF YOU NEED ME TO HELP BURY A BODY, I’M HERE FOR YOU, SHANNON.
Omggg, seriously?!?! No one bought the next Victoria Scott book?! BUT BUT I LIKED FIRE & FLOOD. (Although admittedly I haven’t read the next one yet, but that’s just because TIME. I need more of it.) Publishers tho. Omg. When I rule the world I’ll make sure they sort out their priorities.
This list pretty much sums up my Bookworm Pet Peeves! Thanks Cait! I really need to show this to my friends, family and countrymen. (See what I did there. XD) Anyway, what I really hate the most are the spoilers. LIKE DON’T EVER SPOIL ME ABOUT ANY BOOK THAT I AM CURRENTLY READING OR I AM LIKELY TO READ IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE I WILL PULVERIZE YOU. INTO. TEENY-TINY. PIECES.
I just heard this from my book club friends in Cebu who were present at Victoria Aveyard’s booksigning. (I wasn’t able to come because it was the week before Finals. Life pretty much got in the way. Sob.) Apparently one fan, during the Q and A portion of the signing, asked a spoilerly question about why Victoria killed someone in Glass Sword. And everyone was pretty much shocked and outraged into silence because not everyone has read the book yet! Some of the staff tried to stop her and asked her to just ask the question to Victoria in person but she stubbornly persisted. After that was quite an onslaught of hate posts on our book club page. So I guess it was still a good thing I wasn’t there because I still haven’t read the book yet (Although I own a copy of it already. Again life.) But still I hope that experience teaches bookworms out there TO NEVER SPOIL OR YOU’LL FIND YOURSELVES IN THE BRINK OF A (BOOKISH) CIVIL WAR. 🙁
OMGGGG TO THAT FAN WHO SPOILED IT.😱😱 Some people are mind-boggingly clueless, right? It really ruins things for other people when you don’t giv ethem the choice whether they’ll have spoilers or not.😔
I know! Admittedly, I spoil things to my friends sometimes but not really the major ones. I really felt bad for everyone there. Fortunately, the girl apologized on the group page for what she did and everyone else forgave her as well. I guess they just needed to let off steam. Still, that was probably one of the worst things to EVER happen to a bookworm like EVER.
HAHA! This is fantastic, I love it! I get so nervous lending books because they always come back damaged *cries* I have to threaten my BFF cause she likes to *gasp* crack the spine *shudders*
SAME. I basically never lend anymore. Not even to my family….they are not to be trusted.😂
The sticker on the cover – especially when they use glue like cement so it leaves marks where you’ve used (insert here – nails, knife,hacksaw….). You end up with the book crying (ok it was me crying) and mocking you from the highest shelf where you’ve tried to hide the evidence of terrible publisher crimes.

WHY DO AUTHORS PUT IN CLIFFHANGERS FOR SEQUELS THAT THEY’RE UNSURE ABOUT. NOOOO! I get around the holiday one by taking my Kindle, and yes hardcovers are so expensive T_T Great post Cait! (I’ve missed your blog! I’ve been so stressed I haven’t been commenting much.)
IT IS JUST A BOOK MY ASS. Okay, okay, I shouldn’t swear. BUT HONESTLY NO. JUST NO. If it’s just a book then you’re just…a fleshy sack of blood and organs. And I love stickers…I really do. BUT NOT WHEN THEY ARE ON BOOKS. You CANNOT get those things off without ruining the book or leaving that gross residue. WHY IS LIFE SO HARD, CAIT, WHY?!
Oh gosh yes these are so annoying!!! Love this post! xx

I’m glad you liked it, Ari!! *happy dance*
yes – always, always ask “Wait, have you read this yet?” before discussing any book. ever. there is no statue of limitations on a book.
I once wanted a sequel so badly I emailed the author, and the publisher who said a facebook page with 100 likes might start the ball rolling to get the sequel bought – so I started the facebook group and… well sadly that’s the end of the story. a) I like authors who take their own initiative with those sorts of things to help their books get bought. b) don’t write a cliffhanger if you haven’t sold the sequel. Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen was a standalone and after reading it I NEEDED a sequel – no cliffhanger, just THAT GOOD. and then it became a trilogy! c) if you haven’t sold the rights to the characters (don’t sell the rights to the characters) than self-publish your own sequel and you will instantly be a friend of your readers.
I also do not lend books. I do always offer good resources (whether the library or online buying) so friends can find recommended books for themselves.

JUST READING THIS POST GAVE ME ANXIETY (okay I already had anxiety but you get the point). Some things I don’t want to hear:
‘Your (book) order has been delayed’
‘Let’s print the same paperback with the same cover in different sizes just to mess with unsuspecting bookworms’
*at the bookstore* ‘Are you almost done?’ I’M NEVER DONE

The only reason I’m studying hard to get a mechanical engineering bachelors degree and masters in business administration just to earn handsome salary so that i can buy a house and have a gigantic library and to buy thousands of books without the fear of running out of money for buying more books.
Its my dream to die in that library with my beloved books.
P.S. I made my parents and friends think that I’m studying hard to be independent or to lure a money man (husband) but they dunno my real evil plan…!!!
I can abandon humans for BOOKS!!! for sure.
