Reader, you are set to embark on an adventure about one hidden treasure, two bare-knuckle boxers, three enemies and four hundred and thirty-eight rioters. It is told by an ignorant and prejudiced author–me. My name is Cat Royal…
Cat has lived in Drury Lane Royal Theatre since she was a baby. And there’s never a dull day in Cat’s life. But things really start warming up when a mysterious diamond is hidden in the theatre. Cat has to protect it, but how can she protect a jewel when she has no idea where it’s hidden?
And this diamond’s not exactly making Cat safe. Pedro, the African violinist boy — a theatre sensation — has every reason to be hunting for it. And that’s not to mention street gang leader Billy “Boil” Shepherd. He’s not above violence to get Cat to tell him all about a diamond she only knows exists…
author: Julia Golding
genre: Historical Fiction
Cat is a great character. Smart, cheerful, and wholly realistic she’s great to read about. Her “writing” is fun and all the characters are excellently different. They all have defining personalities.
I found myself learning about historical things I never knew had happened. And the story doesn’t dwell on the history in a boring way. Instead, it’s really interesting and you barely know it was written so long ago.
The book is funny, fast moving, and fascinating. It’s always interesting to know what happens behind the scenes at a famous theatre.
