Sometimes I’m rather illiterate and misread book titles completely.
Hence I was sure I was reading The Girl With All The Gifs instead of the (boring) title of The Girl With All The Gifts. I guess the latter makes more sense, though, seeing paperbacks don’t usually have animated gifs inside. Dang it.
So! For obvious reasons, I decided to do a Gif Reaction Journey! Remember my sort-of-review-plus-gif-reactions-and-flailing post about Daughter of Smoke and Bone? This will be like that.
But, just to clear a few things up before I start:
a) Yes, Zoe, YOU TOLD ME SO. And you were right.
b) Everyone should really read this book.
c) Like now, okay?
d) You can even read my actually logical (ha) goodreads review if you like.
e) It’s not actually logical. It’s full of flailing too.
f) This is actually an ADULT book. So I was actually adulting while I read it and I should be congratulated for that. But YA for the win, though, okay?
PS. There will be no BIG spoilers, but just one that concerns Melanie, and you learn in the first 100-pages. It’s kind of unavoidable to talk about. But, DON’T READ if you want to go in absolutely spoiler-free.
A Journey (with gifs of course) Through Cait’s Reactions to The Girl With All The Gifts/Gifs
I began the book as I usually do…with no clue what it was really about.
What?! I knew it was narrated by a child, was an adult book, was awesome, and was freaky. That’s all I care about.
No problem there though, because do I like zombies? Yes, yes I do.
Then I meet the narrator, Melanie, who’s ten years old and smart and adorable and part of a freaky experiment. Because she’s a zombie. So basically:
I could not love Melanie more. Her matter-of-fact way of viewing life? Innocence? And serious attitude?
Then we met Miss
Honey Justineau, who is teaching the zombie-children how to be smart. And she accidentally loves them. I ACCIDENTALLY LOVE HER.
And let’s not forget Sargent Parks. Who is villainous at the beginning…but awesome. (I secretly shipped him and Justineau SO HARD.)
I ate (it is about zombies after all) more of the book and the action gets hot. I CAN NOT STOP READING.
I mean, mostly the best book ever. Every time it dives into the long detailed doctor’s explanations of viruses and fungi…I’m bored. And confused. Just. What?
Second half of the book is definitely less fabulous.
But OH MY GOSH the character development. It is exceedingly phenomenal. I am happy. I am so so happy. And I just love everyone.
I secretly marry Justineau and Parks and make them adopt Melanie. BUT THEN REALITY STRIKES AND THE CLIMAX EXPLODES IN MY FACE.
SOMETHING INCREDIBLY AWFUL HAPPENS.
The ending is unbelievable. I…I can’t handle it. Maybe I clutch the book and wail. I. am. in. shock.
I finish the book and…why would the author do this to me??
Basically: I cannot recommend it enough. All the feels. The best writing. Characters to break your heart.
Cait has this really huge urge to resort her entire pinterest collection. This is so not going to happen because a) she has like 15,000 pins, b) she can’t justify wasting that much time sorting them, and c) she’s secretly waiting for pinterest to make sub-boards. She really REALLY wants sub-boards. In other news, she’s thinking about sultana bread and deciding whether to read THE SCORCH TRIALS or CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS next.
