Raise your hand if you have a slight TBR pile problem!
And by “slight” I mean “ginormous and terrifying”. And by “problem” I mean “an actual mountainous hazard that is probably going to fall on your head and reduce you to an unattractive pancake”.
Are you raising your hand? Are you raising both hands? YOU’RE IN GOOD COMPANY.
Apparently reading 200 books in 2016 did absolutely NOTHING for my TBR pile. This could be because (A) I acquire books faster than I can read them and whose brilliant plan was that, I don’t know; (B) I read so many library books and ignore books I own for no actual reason; and (C) there are seventy gazillion books out there I am desperate to read and yet publishing keep coming out with more??? They know no chill??? HOW DO I KEEP UP. *
Plus I get distracted. I pick up a book and then —
I AM SUDDENLY READING SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY.
Today I’m listing 10 books I have not devoured yet and I’m mildly ashamed. They’ve been on my TBR for a while and I AM THE WORST. I’m trying to get my dog to read them and just give me a ruff ** outline of the stories so I can get through them faster, but he REFUSES TO HELP. He just chews up my carpet and sleeps all day. Truly disgraceful worth ethic.
I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday for their prompt “2016 Releases I Meant To Read But Didn’t Get To” except I’m not limiting myself to 2016 releases. For goodness sakes, 2003 is still glaring at me. 1884 is probably mad at me too. LOOK I NEED MORE EYEBALLS SO I CAN READ EVERYTHING.
* Spoiler: I don’t keep up. I have a blog and I whinge about drowning in books to you. Honestly if I was on top of my TBR what would I even have to blog about??? #hardtruths
** GET IT?? BECAUSE HE’S A DOG?? Ruff = rough. I’m so punny it’s amazing.
1. WOLF BY WOLF BY RYAN GRAUDIN
Literally every time I do a post about “HEY HERE’S A LIST OF BOOKS I’M ASHAMED I HAVEN’T READ YET” this goes on the top. At least 4 people have glared at me about it. Maybe even 5. I don’t even have a reason for not reading it except (A) it’s become a habit not to, and (B) if I don’t like it at least 4 if not 5 people will attempt to murder me probably by running me over on a very fast bicycle in honour of the book’s aesthetic.
THIS UNREAD BOOK MAKES MY LIFE COMPLICATED.
But rest assured I will read it in 2017!
Probably.
2. THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER BY RENEE AHDIEH
I haven’t read this purely for my FEAR OF SEQUELS. What if they kill everything I love??? What if my ship doesn’t toot toot and sail into the sunset??? What if the ending is anti-climatic??? What if it doesn’t live up to the 5-stars I gave The Wrath and the Dawn??? MY EXPECTATIONS ARE SO HIGH I’M PANICKING.
Also Shazi is just staring at me and judging me and I’m feeling attacked right now. Look I came here to have a good time and it’s not happening.
3. SHADOW QUEEN BY CJ REDWINE
Okay can we just take a moment to admire this author’s name!??! Because it is epic fantasy author name material. I blame my parents for calling me CAIT when I want to write about DRAGONS. Clearly they didn’t take my future career aspirations into consideration. #disappointed
But onwards! I’m embarrassed because the sheer number of photos I’ve taken of this book is actually ridiculous. AND YET I HAVEN’T READ IT?!?! It is a well worn, well petted, well photographed book that is completely unread. Bookstagram makes my life weird. (And I love it.)
It apparently has dragons and it’s a fairy tale retelling and I AM INSUFFERABLY IN LOVE WITH THE COVER so you can bet your bottom dollar * I’m going to read it this year. **
* Actually bet all your money and then watch your coins pack their bags and leave you for dead because I’m so horrendous with my TBR at this point that I spend more time swimming in books than actually fixing my problems. If you bet money I’ll read a book, you probably will lose money is what I’m saying.
** Also FYI that was an Annie musical reference. BOOM.
4. THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY BY GENEVIEVE COGMAN
I feel really dumb for not reading this yet. It’s about libraries??? What could go wrong??? *
I don’t know what’s going on with my life choices either but I need to read this ASAP. Hopefully it has tips on how to either (A) control your TBR so it doesn’t animate and murder you in the night for neglecting it or (B) discover immortality so TBRs are no longer an issue.
* Actually everything could go wrong if I HAD WRITTEN IT. Did I tell you about the time I wrote a book about a library where everyone got murdered by an anxious ghost with separation anxiety? It was a great book.
5. NORA & KETTLE BY LAUREN NICOLLE TAYLOR
This is a Peter Pan retelling which is 100% of the reason I bought it. Also because Shannon swears it’s amazing and I always listen to Shannon. (We all should, to be honest.) The reason I haven’t read it yet is…THERE IS NO REASON.
HELP ME.
6. THE MIRROR KING BY JODI MEADOWS
I specifically wanted to read this straight after I finished The Orphan Queen so I didn’t forget literally everything, as is my hobby. Guess what? I read The Orphan Queen back in May. MAY. That is over 6 months and I have forgotten everything and basically what is my life and what are my choices.
The cover, though, is a gorgeous combination of colours although I hope they don’t have to stab any evil in those cloaks because they will actually tangle themselves and die. BUT AESTHETICS BEFORE SENSIBILITY.
7. SOLDIER BY JULIE KAGAWA
This is the 3rd book in the Talon series, which not a lot of people like…but I do??? Because dragons?? I need no other reason. (The love triangle is, however, ticking me off, and if I set fire to the sun at any point soon you’ll know it’s because I lost my patience.) So it’s been over a YEAR since I read a book in this series and I’VE FORGOTTEN EVERYTHING BUT DON’T FEEL LIKE RE-READING. So this book is smouldering (#punny) alone on my TBR in its fashionable chainmail. I need to read it.
8. STARS ABOVE BY MARISSA MEYER
It’s been out a full year! How do I call myself a hardcore Lunartic and haven’t read it yet?!? I mean, this is probably because it’s not crucial to the series, since it’s a collection of novellas. But apparently there’s a wedding in here and I need to know if it’s the exciting kind of wedding where EVERYONE GETS ATTACKED AND DIES (my kind of wedding) and I also need to know who gets married. Hopefully it’s Wolf and Scarlet so they can raise little Woflet puppy childs.
Could someone just chain me to my kindle so I get this done?
9. WEIGHT OF FEATHERS BY ANNA-MARIE MCLEMORE
I really love magical realism which was the #1 reason I acquired this…but read it? HA NO. I’ve had it for nearly a year and it just languishes around on my TBR until I require a red-spine for some #bookstagram photoshoot.
I actually am suddenly desperate to read it because this author is ON FIRE WITH WRITING SO MANY THINGS and her second book When the Moon Was Ours sounds amazing, and her 3rd book’s cover is so insufferably beautiful I want to eat it. I must justify buying them by reading this first.
I JUST NEED MORE TIME, SIRS.
10. GEMINA BY AMIE KAUFMAN AND JAY KRISTOFF
This has only been out a month or two, so really, in the whole scheme of things IT ISN’T THAT MUCH OF A SHAME. However. I re-read Illuminae just before Gemina released so I’d be all ready. So it is kind of a mortal shame that I EVEN PREPARED FOR THIS BUT STILL DIDN’T GO THROUGH WITH IT.
(Also Jeann keeps glaring at me. I’LL GET TO IT SOON I SWEAR.)
I love this series. I should have read the sequel as soon as it was in my hands. But can you blame my damaged soul?? Will I ever be ready for the new onslaught of feels torture?? No.
I’m also a little worried AIDAN the psycho computer system won’t feature. And then what will be my life??? I’M ONLY HERE FOR AIDAN.
YOUR SEQUEL FEAR RUNS TRUE. The Rose and The Dagger was a disappointment to me and my friend and I read it at the same time and spent 2+ hours complaining about the sequel and how we gave the first book 5 stars and it doesn’t even look to be written by the same author because where?? Did?? Everything?? End?? And WHY?? Where was the infamous awesomeness?! Ok I can’t anymore bye.
Omg nooooooooo THIS IS NOT GOOD AT ALL.😭😂 I’m just going to go flop in a puddle of disappointment now.😂
I FEEL YOUR PAINNNNNN. You must read WOLF BY WOLF, though–SO. GOOD. Like it completely took me from surprise because I’d heard great things but I literally had zero idea what to expect from it. But I freaking LOVEDDD it. And you haven’t read THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER!? Totally one of my ’16 favorites (although admittedly when I read it it’d been so long since I’d read the first hat I literally remembered nothing from the first, ahaha.) I still need to read GEMINA, too. I loved the first one (SO creatively written) so I’m 100% sure I’ll love this one as well. 🙂
I will! I promise!! Although honestly I talk about it sooo much for someone who hasn’t read it.😂 My life is so strange omg. And I’ve heard like most people adore it?! So that’s always encouraging. AND AGH I WILL READ TR&TD AND PROBABLY LOVE IT BUT SOMEONE JUST GET ME THE COURAGE. I’m such a weak little pumpkin pancake these days.
Will Gemina destroy us both though? PROBABLY YES.😭
Hi, Cait!
Great post as always. 🙂 I’m trying to choose 10 of the books on my TBR I should have read in 2016, but – uuuuum – I probably should have read all of them? HOW DARE YOU REMIND ME OF THAT AND MAKE ME FEEL EVEN GUILTIER THAN I ALREADY FEEL, CAIT!
Okay, maybe I couldn’t read all of my Alice books because she is three digits high and that would be MADNESS!!! But I managed to read some of the TBR-seniors which is good, isn’t it?
I kind of don’t know what to do about “The shadow queen”. It’s probably an amazing book but it’s a Snow White retelling and I haven’t even read “Winter” yet! Which brings me to “Stars above”. I didn’t buy it because I own copies of the books that have some of the short stories in them, but I’m not sure about the wedding? What should I do, Cait?
By the way, I could read “Winter” for a challenge. If I read “Winter” this month, will you read “Stars above”? Come on, Cait! Motivate me!
LG, m
LET’S JUST ALL FEEL GUILTY TOGETHER AND SHARE GUILTY CAKE AND IT’LL BE FINE. *nods* 😭😂 Any progress is at least good progress right?! (Says she who is currently reading a library book instead of anything on her enormous TBR. What is my life.)
I don’t know about Stars Above! I just need to read it haha. I haven’t read ANY short stories yet so it’ll all be new for me which is good. :’) Maybe try the ebook? I have it on ebook!
Haha, yes, we should challenge each other to get up to date with our Lunar Chronicles novels.😂
Almost every book on your list is also on my TBR of shame as well. What have I been doing with my time? I can completely relate to your fear of sequels. I am good about reading them if I have the whole series available to me but if I have to wait for publication then I start to panic that the second or third book isn’t going to live up to the first one and them I will have to pretend that that book doesn’t exist. That takes so much effort that I end up avoiding books that I actually am looking forward to. I never claimed to make sense. Sometimes, I even get this feeling about stand alone authors whose books I love.
*hi fives for our shame* 😭😂 I basically am the WORST with series for those reasons *nods* and also because if I love the first book a lot I’m petrified the sequel won’t live up to it. And if I hate the first book then I don’t read on. SEE MY QUANDARY?!? Life is hard.😂 I think you actually make perfect sense! Standalones are also soooo much less stressful, omg, bless their singleness.
I got Stars Above for Christmas and ACK IT WAS SO GOOD. I was grinning like an idiot through the entire last story. ;D
I’M SO GLAD YOU LIKED IT! That makes me more excited to read it.🎉🎉
Dearest Cait, I AM SO HAPPY YOU HAVE NOT READ SOME OF THESE. Frankly, it makes me feel SO MUCH BETTER because I, too have not read them. Shadow Queen, Wolf by Wolf, The Wrath and the Dawn (and therefore The Rose and the Dagger), AND Illuminae and Gemina are ALL ON MY TBR. Now, I don’t OWN them but still…………………… Also we are twins in that we ignore the books we own. BUT FOR ME IT’S TO BUY SHINY NEW ONES. The struggle is REAL here. We shall suffer together.
So we can be epic failures together, right? RIGHT? FAILURE PARTY!! HUZZAH! *flings confetti of doom over both of us* Let’s just ignore all the books we own and keep getting books elsewhere and basically questioning our life’s choices. Solid plan. In fact I’m going to the library tomorrow to continue aiding this problem of mine.
Whaaaat am I doing.😭
NO FRETTING YOU ARE BEING AWESOME.
One day you can take over the ENTIRE world. All you need to do is drop your TBR on your enemies and *SPLAT* no more resistance 😀
SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND AS IT’S GROWING AND HAVE A BLAST AT THE LIBRARY.
Oh hey, I’ve actually read Gemina! But Stars Above is also on my TBR, I want to read it so bad. But I actually haven’t been able to find it near me. Some of your other reads some interesting too! I – might be adding them to my TBR, shit.
Your TBR is welcome.😂 At least it can join mine in suffering?!? ALL THE TBRS CAN SUFFER TOGETHER HUZZAH. *collapses under a mountain of unread books*
I haven’t finished Replica by Lauren Oliver, that is mostly because I own it and I neglect it for library books. I also haven’t read The Winner’s Kiss, Fate of The Tearling, Heartless, and the Night Circus. I need to read The Winner’s Kiss to see how that ends, that is a priority for this year. You should definitely read Wolf by Wolf right now! As your loyal pineapple, I command you. I also unexpectedly enjoyed Stars Above. I had a physical copy, and it has some of the most beautiful endpapers I’ve ever seen! It has an illustration of the Lunar palace, and its gorgeous. I’ve also read The Shadow Queen, I think it is over hyped. I read it mostly because I loved C.J. Redwine’s previous series and loved it. When I finished I felt like, “That’s it?!” Also Yay for me! I read this post early, I usually feel like I read your posts late because of time zones.
I borrowed Replica from the library…and then sent it back because it was too big. AREN’T I THE WORST?! 😂 omg yes to Night Circus. I need to read that too. Except I don’t own it so at least I don’t feel TOO guilty about not having read it yet. (The Winner’s Kiss is A+ and magnificent by the way.)
As your loyal pineapple queen, I HEAR YOU! I WILL READ WOLF BY WOLF I PROMISE.😂
(Also definitely yay you for reading it early!! 🎉🎉 I always love your comments so much!)
Aaaaand I can totally relate 1000% here😂 most of the time, it is YOU who increases my TBR, so thank you! (Ok not really😏) I can get the sequel problem. I wanted to read Gemina ASAP after Illuminae, but I heard people say that Illuminae was the best. I mean I am not really hazy on the details since I read it in November, so can’t agree with you there. The Wrath and The Dawn series is one I hear tons about!! WHEN!! WILL!! I!! READ!! IT!!and Wolf by Wolf is also quite popular!!
I’D BE SORRY BUT I’M NOT EVEN.😂 Basically we’re all doomed to have TBR problems because we all just keep recommending each other excellent books. AHHHH. (And yes I’ve heard people say Gemina isn’t as good which freaks me out because I’m already vastly terrified of sequels.)
DON”T THEE WORRY I HAVE READ NONE OF THESE BOOKS YOU MENTIONED EITHER (except Stars Above. Yes, there is a wedding and a wedding to be and all is very cute and will leave you screaming MOAR) (probably). However, several are on my TBR (Gemina and Wolf By Wolf and The Weight of Feathers and The Wrath and the Dawn which we even OWN and all is very shameful). Please read Wolf By Wolf or Stars Above and be pleased 😛 XD
OH GOOD. LET’S HAVE A PARTY OF JUST YOU AND I, THE FAILURES. *hi fives* Agh, this is just taunting now.😂 I need to read Stars Above. I’m serious about someone needing to duct tape it to my face until I settle down and read it. So I’ll definitely read Stars Above AND Wolf by Wolf asap, right?! BRIBE ME WITH CAKE THIS SHALL WORK.
When you talk about ships, you must have a completely different kind of ship in mind then I do becaues mine definitely don’t do the “toot toot” thing XD
“It’s about libraries??? What could go wrong???” Ahaha, a lot, Cait. A. LOT.
SAME for Stars Above. I’m so ashamed.
Your list isn’t that bad actually. There isn’t a single book on your list that makes me wanna yell at you LOL
Who knows what I’m even talking about half the time. It’s a mystery to us all.😂 And yes, yes I am in agreement: everything can go wrong in a library. Just the fact that I go in for 1 book and always come out with 300 is a thing that goes wrong.
WHAT ARE OUR LIFE CHOICES WITH STARS ABOVE.
(I feel very accomplished at not being yelled at.😂)
Oh, that was actually about the book itself. There is still a lot that can go wrong, even if it’s about libraries (fingers crossed that you’ll like it a lot more than I did ha)
Ohhhhh I GET IT NOW. Sorry about that. haha. I’ve been misunderstanding a lot of things lately. I NEED A NAP.😭😂 Ahem, anyway, excuse me while I now continue procrastinating The Invisible Library forever.😂
Okay the only one I’ve read on your list is Gemina so clearly I also have TBR problems. I definitely want The Weight of Feathers now!!! I just finished When the Moon was Ours and by GOLLY it was amazing. You have to read it!! And we can wait (im) patiently for her third book together. I also reeeeeally want to read The Rose and the Dagger 😀
So basically I should just buy When The Moon Was Ours right now anyway BECAUSE I’M GOING TO NEED IT RIGHT?!? *nods to make it true* Although at this rate I just buy books and stare at them and don’t read them and what is my life.😩😭 (Also she really scored with the cover designer!! I swear each cover is more beautiful than the last!)
Clearly none of this is your fault. The days are too short, work, school and people (!!!) are getting in the way of your reading time and most of all: you need at least half of the day to think about food. And make it. And eat it.
Anyway.
I seem to have the same problems (and it’s not my fault either in case anyone was wondering). For example: I have not read “Stars Above” either. I do not even own it. In fact, I have not even read “Winter”, because… well, I don’t know why.
The same happened with Brandon Sandersons Reckoners series. I read Steelheart early this year and bought Firefight the same day I finished Steelheart, but have I read it? No.
Other books I bought to read them immediately:
# The Martian by Andy Weir (so I could watch the movie – I still have not seen it by the way…)
# Red Rising by Pierce Brown
# The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
# A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
# Here, There Be Dragons by James A. Owen
# Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
# Half Lost by Sally Green (I’m terrified to read it. TERRIFIED.)
# City of… something – I read the first three books early 2016 (I’m probably the last person on this planet to do so) and then the world exploded. I cannot think of anything else that would have had the power to prevent me from reading more Cassandra Clare books.
# All the Michael J. Sullivan books (I think I read NONE last year. NONE. none… )
# and much more
In retrospect I haven’t read a lot in 2016 and let’s hope 2017 will be a LOT better.
Yes that is SO MUCH TRUTH RIGHT THERE. The universe is conspiring against my TBR and I…however are we supposed to keep together when work/school/commitments/life wants to eat us alive!? *shrieks dramatically*
(Honestly Calamity is actually a really huge letdown.😭😂 I looove Steelheart and Firefight and basically read them back to back too, but then Calamity? NO. SOMEONE SAVE ME. *howls*)
I need to read the Martian too! Although I don’t own it so I don’t feel too bad haha. THE RAVEN BOYS THOUGH, IS ABSOLUTELY MY LIFE AND I WILL RECOMMEND IT 900000 TIMES AND PROBABLY NEVER STOP. *piles all the Raven Boys on your head*
Be terrified of Half Lost. Ohhhh be terrified.
That’s why I tend not to finish series. Most of the time I’m stuck halfway through (the whole series or the last book – depends). The more I like the series, the worse it is. I don’t have a problem when it comes to finishing series I don’t like that much. Hm… Probably because last books tend to kill off a lot of characters, so I can hope that some of the stupid ones will die too.
If my new TBR “Jar” allows it, I will read the Raven Boys this year. I’m really hoping the little paper strips I forced into a small wooden box will help me defeat my TBR. We shall see. (Probably not, but one can dream, right?!)
I am.
I am probably going to have nightmares before, while and after I read the book.
I am probably going to die.
The Rose and the Dagger wasn’t as good as the first book, but I did really enjoy it. You should give it a go!
My Top Ten
I will for sure try it! I bought it after all haha and I DID so love the first book so I do need closure.😂
The Invisible Library has been sitting on my shelf for a few months now. Saw the sequel before and the first thing that came to my mind was I should buy it even though I haven’t read book one (’cause what could go wrong?). Spoiler Alert: I didn’t bought the sequel. I have such great self-control.
Your self control is VERY ADMIRABLE. *bows to your skills* 😂 I try not to buy sequels unless I know I adore the first book! I’m too scared of wasting money.😂
I just fell in love with the cover of The Invisible Library! <3 so perty
I actually just took down my tower of TBRs ( so that I could photograph their beauty for future posts ) and found that I have 44* books! Compared to your 200 a year, I'm sure that seems tiny but to me I'm terrified and also in awe at this mountain I have acquired.
*Make that 45 cause I'm probably gonna go buy The Invisible Library now ^_^
Aren’t the colours just gorgeous?! I’m soooo in love with it too!! And omg there’s like 80 books on my TBR right now hhaah, but weirdly enough, most of the 200 books I read last year where actually from the library!
Yeah, I am really bad at reading books I already own – I buy them thinking I am absolutely going to read them right away and three years later they’re still unread. I just started reading Wolf By Wolf and so far so good! Most of the other ones you’ve listed I definitely haven’t read because I haven’t gotten around to reading the first books in the series but maybe I’ll eventually read them. There are SO many I was supposed to read last year but I basically spent the whole year taking a break from reading and blogging so yeah, just a little bit behind. But hopefully 2017 will be a lot better. Great post!
Zareena @ The Slanted Bookshelf
So relatable.😂 I’m actually super keen on all of these?! I’m not disinterested at all so I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY I DON’T JUST SIT DOWN AND DEVOUR THEM ALL. My life is a befuddle.😂
Honesty time…The Rose And The Dagger was not (for me at least) as good as The Wrath And The Dawn and I was disappointed by it…however, I do feel it is worth concluding the series because it felt good to know the ending!
OMG DON’T TERRIFY ME LIKE THIS.😂 Hehe. But that’s exactly why I’m scared of reading TR&T. The first book was everything I wanted and more, so like what can live up to it?!? I’ll still read TR&TD though because closure. Eventually…😂
What could go wrong in The Invisible Library? Ha, ha, ha…
Also, all the points for the Annie reference.
I still haven’t read All the Bright Places, and that really did come out two years ago now. I didn’t get round to the second Magnus Chase either. 🙁
YAS YOU UNDERSTOOD MY REFERENCE! And honestly your love of The Invisible Library is what made me buy it, so be proud. 😉
Magnus Chase #2 was sooo good. I was actually a bit worried because it seemed rambly? But we get introduced to ALEX who is AMAZING. 😀
I saw this and I was like DID YOU STEAL THAT TITLE FROM RICK RIORDAN!?!?! Cause in Percy Jackson’s Greek Heroes there’s literally a chapter called: “Theseus Slays The Mighty – OH, LOOK! A BUNNY RABBIT!”.
Hmm…
Anyways, my TBR is kind of really inflated for someone who only joined Goodreads last July- 80 books at the moment, and this is after I cleared a huge chunk during the holidays. And now school has started again and I’m gnawing on my nails (ALLITERATION) because HOMEWORK. I’M HYPERVENTILATING, HALP ME. And… it’s kind of stressful when you’re currently reading 3 books at once (again, HALP). Plus, I hate homework, (doesn’t everyone?) IT BURDENS ME AND TAKES MY PRECIOUS TIME.
I have NOT read pretty much everything apart from The Rose and the Dagger and Stars Above, both of which I really like. Plus, extra thanks for enlarging my TBR. I was worried it wasn’t impressive enough. *nods* It might just crush me to death, but who cares? (except for, uh, me)
Really?! Haha. No I stole it from the movie Up! You know, with that gif of Dug I just used? 😂
Oh 80 books? SAME. I don’t even know how they all get there to be honest, it’s life’s greatest mystery. I think TBRs grow on their own.😂 (And I think TBRs can get stressful but just remember: better too many books than not enough, right!?)
THE PAIN OF YOUR TBR IS MOST WELCOME. I’M HERE TO
HELPNOT HELP.I did a post on a lot of releases I haven’t read yet either recently! Honestly,it’s shameful. Way too many books I think I’ll love, but just haven’t picked up, for some reason? 😬
I haven’t read Wolf by Wolf or Stars Above either, and I’m pretty sure they’re going to be great reads once I actually read them. 😂
I actually recently read Gemina and LOVED it. AIDAN does make an appearance (which surprised me, but made me so happy). 😄
The feeling is shared by many.😂 I am like SO EXCITED for all of these books and yet so so practised at procrastinating them?😂
I’m so glad AIDAN makes an appearance because, I won’t lie, he’s my favourite.
Cait!! You must read the invisible library, it is so the best!! There are parallel universes, and magic and there are Dragons!! (Like awesome ones) plus fae and wizards and please please please read this!! It’s so good!!
WAIT. WHAT. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THERE WERE DRAGONS IN IT BEFORE NOW OMG. *tosses everything and runs towards bookshelf and TBR pile* I NEED TO READ IT.
Girl. READ THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. I devoured it and it instantly became one of my Favorite Things Ever. There’s a magic library. (Well, not exactly magic. Special library?) And dragons. And a detective. And steampunkery. And intrigue. And some rather creepy villains. It’s awesome.
That said, I still need to read The Weight of Feathers too, so, yeah, no judgement there. (Actually, I should’ve read it, like, two or three years ago when I got it . . . but I didn’t know I liked magical realism at the time, in my defense. Still not certain I do because I don’t know what books are magical realism, but if the genre’s anything like Stiefvater . . . ?)
I WILL! I PROMISE! IT IS HIGH ON THE TO-DO LIST THIS YEAR. IS the whole series out do you know? Because that would make my life infinitely better if I don’t have to wait for painful cliffhangers.😂 But did did didiiiiiid you just say DRAGONS? *tosses laptop and runs for bookshelf*
I think Stiefvater is more paranormal to be honest? Although she COULD fit into the magical realism category with The Raven Cycle at least, but Shiver and Lament/Ballad are more straight out paranormal. I think.😂 I have no idea. I JUST LOVE EVERYTHING SHE WRITES. #RabidFan
Most of the series is out, I think. Not all of it. And yes I just said dragons. 😀 Enjoy!
I was referring more to the Raven Cycle and The Scorpio Races, not so much Shiver and Lament/Ballad (which I haven’t read). Thanks.
The Weight of Feathers. You absolutely need to read The Weight of Feathers, because it is GORGEOUS! I love it so much, Anna-Marie McLemore has kind of become an auto-buy author (except I’m yet to buy When the Moon Was Ours, which is on my TTT!) – basically, if she writes it, I want to read it, I don’t even care what it’s about. THAT’S how good The Weight of Feathers is! And it’s a retelling of/reimagining of/inspired by Romeo & Juliet, And any books that that elements of other, older stories in them automatically hit the Need To Read list, right? Cait, you need to read this book soon!
Of the other books you’ve listed, I only have The Shadow Queen and Wolf by Wolf to read. To be honest, I didn’t even know I had Wolf by Wolf until I saw it on my Kindle the other day. That’s the thing with eProofs/eBooks, they’re so easy to forget! And I only got it because other people said it was good, but I myself don’t know if I actually fancy it? Siiigh. I love the sound of The Shadow Queen though. Excited!
That’s how I feel about Anna-Marie McLemore AND I’VE READ NOTHING BY HER.😂 This is the strength of amazing premises and beautiful covers haha. I’m the worst. I told myself I’d read The Weight of Feathers this weekend buuuuut so far I’ve just been flapping around trying to catch up with comments. I NEED MORE HOURS IN MY DAY TO READ.😂
omg I agree ebooks can be easy to forget! I just found I have like a July ARC on my kindle and I feel so guilty.😂
I never let sequals rest. The minite I get them I devour them and howl for the next.
Most crazily, ~Olive
p.s. sorry about the spelling. I just read the hammer of thor, and I’m going crazy.
p.p.s. why does everyone keep calling Alex he? for almost the ENTIRE book Alex is a she!! >:[
You’re more brave than me!! I always get terrified the sequels are going to let me down horribly.😂
I hadn’t heard anyone call Alex a he particularly? I feel like the correct term would be their/they since Alex is genderfluid? 🙂
why not! I always want to know what happens next!
hmm. might just be my group of online friends. and Alex specificly said that she didn’t like they/their, when she was she it was she and when she was he it was he, and woe to anyone who forgot or couldn’t tell the difference. 😛
I LOVE ALEX SO MUCH. And I always feel weird whenever I anyone calls her ‘he’, even though she is genderfluid. Most of the while she identifies as a female, though.
For me it’s the entire series of Peter Grant (starting with Rivers of London which I think I’ve recommended to you as well). Basically, I’m not even sure WHICH BOOK in the series I even read and which I didn’t. A reread is probably due. Especially as everyone is frolicking away with it on Goodreads.
And Gemina, of course.
BTW, I also think AIDAN might not feature 😐
You did recommend them!! I loved the cover so I did add it on Goodreads haha.😂 GEMINA THOUGH. Hopefully we get a chance to read that soon this year??! (I heard AIDAN does feature!)
You liked the cover, so you added it. Oh my god xD but I won’t argue that I request books for their covers too 😀
AIDAN features! Yass! I have to go buy that book though, I don’t even have it yet.
Nora & Kettle made my list too. I totally meant to read that book, but there are a billion other books! Slow down, publishing, I can’t read that fast.
I know right?!? Publishing needs to chill because we have NO HOPE of catching up.😂
Great list! I’m definitely in the group of people glaring at you for not having read Wolf by Wolf, but I can promise you that if you don’t like it I’m not going to run you over with a bike. And I really need to read Nora & Kettle, too! It didn’t make it onto my list because there are just SO MANY 2016 releases I’m ashamed I haven’t gotten to yet, but I actually have a copy of it so I know I’ll get to it soon. Or soon-ish, at the very least. I just finished Gemina a couple of days ago and I really liked it! That’s one that I definitely think you should get to soon.
*hides in the corner of shame* I SWEAR I’LL FIX THIS SOON!!! I don’t even really understand why I haven’t read it since it comes so highly recommended. And considering I like myself 3D and not a 2D pancake that has been flattened by a bike I shall heed your warnings and read it this year. I promise. :’)
I’m so glad you liked Gemina!! Disappointing sequels are the woooorst so I’m happy it’s good!
OH MY GOD, you need to read The Rose and the Dagger & Gemina like, LAST YEAR! GET TO IT!
But in all seriousness… I’ll give you cake if you read them XD
Brittany @ Brittany’s Book Rambles
I WILL. LIKE WHY HAVEN’T I YET THOUGH? IT IS S BAD OF ME. *goes to sit in the corner of shame* 😂 Also I accept all bribery by cake. Immediately. :’)
The Weight of Feathers and Wolf by Wolf are fantastic, so I hope you can get to them soon! I really liked The Rose & the Dagger too. I totally relate though – I read 220 books, and my TBR is still super long.
My TTT: http://bookworm716.blogspot.com/2017/01/top-ten-tuesday-2016-releases-i-havent.html
Ahhhhhh I’m glad you liked TR&TD because I’m seeing so many mixed feelings about it.😂 Which probably isn’t helping my fear and anticipation for reading it haah.
Actually, I don’t blame you for not wanting to have all your feels/expectations destroyed. I’m getting a bit nervous about the 4th and last release slated for one of my fave series. And if it makes you feel better, The Invisible Library was very disappointing, so don’t let it torture you if you skip it. Your ghost with separation anxiety concept sounds much better. 😉
Awk I’m disappointed about the Invisible Library!! But quite a few people have said that.😂 I did buy it though so I’ll definitely get to it sometime haha. (I have such fond feels for my little anxious ghost story. *sniffles happily* I MISS IT.)
I would LOVE to read some of your work! Seriously. I think you should miss your stories – they sound great! 😀
Awww, really?! *blushes* THAT’S SO NICE TO HEAR!! Hopefully I’ll be published someday!!! 🎉
It’s too easy to get distracted when you’re inundated with book recommendations left and right ;P
I think for every book I read this year, I bought three more (and I read 120) 😂
Oh well, first world problems as they say 😉
Wolf by Wolf and The Invisible Library are also on my 2017 TBR! I missed out on them last year. Though my biggest failure was with Schwab’s Vicious.
Happy Reading, my dear!
I totally feel the pain!! I can’t understand how I read SO MANY BOOKS and yet am so hopelessly behind.😂 Hopefully we get to all these books soon?!? (Vicious is so so so good omg.)
I have the same problem! Lol I actually own most of the books on my list, but how can I read them when I have a pile of 20 library books screaming at me! Haha When The Moon Was Ours was one of my favorites this year, I’ll definitely be reading more from McLemore! Happy reading 🙂
It’s a problem right?!?😂 I mean, we COULD stop going to the library so much but…bah. Libraries are awesome.😂 (I seriously want to read When the Moon was Ours!! Eeeep!)
You might be better waiting til Illuminae 3 comes out before reading Gemina. Waiting is hard, man!
I still need to read quite a few of these. Why is it so easy to covet a book then promptly forget about it once it’s in your hands? I still haven’t read Crooked Kingdom.
Omg that’s not actually a terrible idea.😂 The wait for Gemina was hard enough…but then if I DO read Gemina now, it gives me an excuse to re-read Illuminae at the end of this year.😂 I LOVE ILLUMINAE SO MUCH I CANNOT EVEN.
(Crooked Kingdom is utter perfection. <3)
You might hate me for this, but I haven’t read Six Of Crows or Crooked Kingdom! I know I REALLY should read them before I’m killed and threatened but I just haven’t. NO Idea why…
Of course I won’t hate you for it! I definitely know the feel of having too many books and not enough time.😂
Well I should most definitely have read was The Siren by Kiera Cass (and I call myself a fan?! FOR SHAME MIRONIEL)
OH BUT YOU NEED TO READ THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY. SO GOOD. IT’S AMAZING. AND THE SERIES ONLY GETS BETTER AS IT GOES ALONG.
I need to read the Siren too! Although I need to finish the Selection series as well still….😂I’m so far behind omg I don’t even have hopes of catching up anymore haha.
I DEFINTELY WILL READ THE INVISIBLE LIBRARY & CO AS SOON AS I CAN!!
First of all… I COMPLETELY relate to your “squirrel” distraction issues. I mean, new books are coming out left and right, and they are so shiny new so OF COURSE we get distracted by them…
Also, pretty much every book on your list is still on my TBR as well… except The Shadow Queen which I read and loved! AND I did have The Rose and the Dagger on my list but I also just finished it today so yay I can at least cross one book of my list of shame!
The reason I procrastinated this one for so long is the same reason you mentioned and that is the sequel syndrome. It’s just that I really want to read the book because I loved the previous book BUT… I remember nothing. So I need to re-read and that takes time and… hey a shiny new book! But for The Rose and the Dagger I read a recap and that helped… mostly. I did end up really liking it!
It’s just impossible not to get distracted right?!?? THEY’RE ALL SO PRETTY AND DESERVE OUR LOVE! And I’m hopeless with sequels because I’ve always forgotten the first book by the time I get around to reading them.😂
Oohhh, that’s awesome that you just finished The Rose and the Dagger!! Did it live up to the awesomeness of the first book?! I HOPE SO. I could find a recap…but I also want to re-read The Wrath and the Dawn because I loved it so much.😂 omg can we have a time machine too please?!
Wolf by Wolf only got added to my TBR recently actually… I had no idea what it was about but it sounds AMAZING. hahahaha I only JUST read Rose and the Dagger (like last week) also because of a fear of sequels, so I get it. GASP you haven’t read Gemina?!?! Girl. It’s fantastic.
I add books to my TBR all the time and like have no clue what they’re really about.😂 BUT THEY’RE PRETTY SO THERE’S THAT. hehe. And omg was The Rose and the Dagger as good as the first book?! (And I’ll get onto Gemina soon I promise!)
It was different than Wrath but in a good way. Bit less of a focus on the romance (which I loved) but I’ll get over it. It was still good. haha
OMG I’ve read Talon ages ago and still haven’t read Rogue. I like the first book and still haven’t picked the second one? What’s wrong with me? Seriously, I’m so bad at keeping up with series. Also, I finished Illuminae a few days ago and I still can’t get over how goood it was! I need Gemina. Also, the computer system is called in english Aidan? I was so confused for a minute, because I have the slovak translation and it’s called Spiro. Or am I talking about something completely different? 😀
I’m super bad with keeping up with series too!! I mean, that year’s wait until the next book releases?!? I always forget EVERYTHINg in the first books and I don’t have a lot of time to re-read so it’s a problem.😂
And yes! The computer is AIDAN in Illuminae. 😀
Somebody needs to find a way to tame these unruly TBR’s! Great list and excuses 😀 PS Read Nora & Kettle soon its really good!
We should probably stop recommending each other ALL THE BOOKS OF EVER.😂 (But also we caaan’t because it’s too much fun.😂)
I just read Wolf by Wolf and I really think you will love it! I hope you get a chance to read it soon. No pressure though 🙂
I’ll definitely attempt to read it ASAP!! It’s so highly recommended by so many people!!
I’m so conflicted about The Rose and The Dagger. On the one hand, curiosity demands I read it. On the other hand, I really kinda sorta hated the first book so it’s like,, why??? Why am I a masochist? Why do I insist on hurting myself this way??? Idek.
Anyway! Great list (as always), Cait!
Aww, I’m sad you hated the first book…it’s one of my top favourites of ever! But there’s probably no point reading the sequel then, right?! Better to read books you might enjoy! 😀
I really should have read The Sun is also a star and will this year and Gemina is one everyone loved. I still need to read the first book.
Gemina is doomed to be amazing. I hope we both get a chance to read it this year!😂
I also have Wolf by Wolf on my list. I keep wanting to read it, but then I end up not. Maybe this year!
SAME. It’s becoming a problem.😂 I’ve owned it for too long for this!! Ahhh!!
The only one I’ve read on this list is Gemina so excuse me while I go hang in my head shame. XD And SAME, I always read library books and I’m like “WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS, YOU LITERALLY HAVE YOUR OWN LIBRARY IN YOUR ROOM BUT NO”. I need to rethink my life choices, obviously. XD But seriously, you need to read Gemina immediately. IT’S MY FAVOURITE THING EVER. <3
We can sit in the corner of shame together.😂 And AGH WHAT IS IT WITH THE LIBRARY BOOKS?!? Sometimes I feel like I prefer library books because if I hate them it’s no waste….but if I don’t like a book I BOUGHT then I feel terrible.😂
Ahhh I will read Gemina super soon I promise!!
I missed The Shadow Queen and The Invisible Library last year as well! I need clones in order to get all the books I want to read read! I think that’s a great idea, clones that could do some of our reading for us…….
My TTT: https://jjbookblog.wordpress.com/2017/01/10/top-ten-tuesday-91/
Or some way to download books straight into our brains right?!? That might help us catch up.😂
Yes your library ghost story was wonderful fun. ALSO PAIN. You convienently forgot that part.
YAS LITTLE BABY WOLFET CHILDRENS. I haven’t read Stars Above yet either BUT I REALLY WANT IT TO BE SCARLET AND WOLF TOO. *mild screaming*
Just a little itty bitty tiny bit of pain right? NOT TOO MUCH TO WORRY ABOUT.😭 *cries because misses Thomas so much* And we should both get onto reading Stars Above asap.😂 SO WE CAN FLAIL.
THOMAS. *curls up in ball and cries*
WE SHOULD. IT IS IMPORTANT. Just as important and ASAP worthy as ALL THE OTHER NINETY BILLION BOOKS WE WANT TO READ #bookwormproblems
*raises hand* *keeps raising hand* *collapses under TBR* Don’t mind me, I’m just drowning in unread books. (But seriously, could authors maybe just take a little pause in their writing? Just enough time for me to read the 488963793 books I want to read, before they write more?)
I’m definitely curious to know what you think of Wolf by Wolf. I not-so-secretly hope you hate it. xD
Oops, I fell into the YA fantasy slump and still haven’t read The Rose and the Dagger, either. Same problem with The Mirror King.
I thought The Invisible Library wasn’t bad, but apparently a lot of people thought it was awful? I may have been influenced by the shiny cover…
The one I’m really ashamed for not reading is Stars Above. /o\ Oh, and Gemina. But I’m scared!
All we’re asking for is a year, or two (or nine) off so the publishers can chill for a moment and let us catch up. I just want to read everything???? Why is that asking for too much??? #CaitLogic
(I think you’re secretly one of the reasons I put off Wolf by Wolf haha.😂)
I’ve heard the Mirror King is actually really boring so I’ll just weep here and hope I get amazed? But honestly YA fantasy is becoming really hit or miss with me too. I’ve been spoiled by The Lies of Locke Lamora.😭
Gah, you MUST read Stars Above!!! If ONLY for the wedding. 😉 Although every other story (mostly) was fantastic, as it’s to be expected when it comes to Marissa Meyer. But I’m one to talk since I only just finished Fairest like a week ago. Oops.
I MUST KNOW WHO IS IN THIS WEDDING!! *flails wildly* And I’ve rated all the Lunar books like 5stars so what can go wrong? :’) I’m just going to pretend I didn’t read Heartless and give it only 3.😂
I am super awful about new releases. Perhaps it is the Mr. Scrooge in me (I swear, it’s inherited!). I don’t know…I also don’t like hyped books, so I avoid. I hope you get to read all of these books this year – with your cake, of course!
That’s fair! It’s always hard to know if hyped books will be good…although I just want to read them all always.😂
HOW HAVE YOU NOT READ STARS ABOVE!!!!
I think you’re mad, but I must applaud the resilience. I read it the second it arrived…
Whenever you do get round to it, you’ll ADORE the book! There’s some stories that are better than others, but overall it’s a perfect read.
I’M SO SURE I’LL LOVE IT!! I mean how can I not?!? It’s a Lunar book and I’ve rated ALL the others 5 stars so far.😍
OH GRACIOUS that cape gif xD *laughs hysterically* (*doesn’t mention that I legit had to stare at it for about seven replays before I realized what was happening*)
THE SHADOW QUEEN. Read it. (And NO I haven’t read it yet *cries because I am, apparently, I deprived bookworm* BUT IT LOOKS GLORIOUS. I totally understand the petting and not reading)
THE CAPE GIF IS MY ACTUAL FAVOURITE GIF NOW. And omg Shadow Queen apparently has dragons?!? I mean do we need any other reason to be 10000% obsessed with it??😍
I will say that, in my opinion, The Rose & the Dagger isn’t as good as The Wrath & the Dawn, but it’s still worth giving a read. I didn’t get to either Mark of the Plague by Kevin Sands or The Witch’s Vacuum Cleaner by Terry Pratchett.
Ellie | On the Other Side of Reality
Awk that’s definitely a disappointment already! I’ll definitely be reading it though since I bought it…and curiosity killed the cat always.😂
I’m so embodied with the disembodied arms holding the books. Who is that? You, with a timer? A co-conspirator?
Confession: I always read lists like this because I’m always looking to add to my towering TBR pile. Yes, reading about other people’s TBR problems specifically to exacerbate my own. Don’t tell the co-owner of my house that I’m looking to add to the collection.
YES IT IS I.😂 There’s nothing like a few disembodied limbs flailing around to represent my bookwormproblems.😂 (And comparing TBR woes always makes we bookworms feel better mwahah.)
*applauds your punniness* Also, like, all these books are just so BEAUTIFUL. Especially The Shadow Queen. I’ve been eyeing that book for a while. And I totally get the getting-8-gazillion-books-from-the-library-when-you-already-own-20-gazillion-unread-books problem. *sighs and glances at most recent library haul* And I also just got back from a used bookstore trip in which I acquired six new books, including a whole trilogy that was, in all, less than a dollar so like HOW COULD I REFUSE THAT? But I’ve actually owned the first book for about four years and have not yet read it. Now I own two (because, obviously, I had to get the first book again cause it was a different edition and matched the others).
#problems
The library is just too tempting right?!? I mean, why can’t I just EAT ALL THE BOOKS IN THERE. *weeps into my cupcake* And also there’s like less pressure for library books because if you hate them you can just send them back…whereas if I don’t like a book I bought I feel like I wasted my money.😂
USED BOOKSTORES ARE THE BEST.
I haven’t read any of these either and most of them are on my wishlist! For shame! Definitely need to read them this year for sure!
~Sara
We just need more time to read right?!?😂
I STARTED CROOKED KINGDOM AS SOON AS IT CAME OUT BUT I HAVE YET TO FINISH IT AND I. AM. ASHAMED. I’m so scared though??? I know it’s going to be a feels killer, and I don’t want to say goodbye to my babies yet. My desire to know the ending has not exceeded my will to live, so it’s currently still just sitting on my nightstand taunting me.
The Song Of Achilles is another one I’m embarrassed I haven’t read yet. I picked it up so quickly after hearing rave reviews of it… and then I put it on my shelf and it’s been sitting there for months. #whoops.
My vote is for The Rose + The Dagger, if only so I can read your review and decide if I need to read it ASAP as well.
(P.S. AIDAN does appear in Gemina, and he’s every bit as glorious as he was in Illuminae.)
C’MON NOW. FINISH IT. YOU WON’T REGRET IT. *laughs manically in the corner* Actually it’s totally feels destroying but also perfect so yesssss read it and feel the pain like I must feel the pain. :’) <3
Omg I'm the same with Song of Achilles!! I bought it last year and everything and yet HAVE NOT READ IT. Where is the corner of shame. I must cry in it.
(That is 1000% a relief about my darling ADIAN.)
I keep meaning to read The Invisible Library and never getting round to it too! It’s such a beautiful cover. Also, I haven’t even read Illuminae but if it features a psycho computer system then I need to SOON. Sounds like my sorta love interest tbh.
There’s so many books that I keep meaning to read and never doing so but House of Leaves by Mark Z Danielewski is probably at the top. I read a fanfic where it featured and I sort of have a cultish obsession with it now so I’m making my boyfriend buy it for me for my birthday. 😀 😀 😀
Astrid
http://www.astridkaniele.com/
Exactly. AIDAN is the psychotic computer of my dreams basically. <3 So much to love. So much to relate to. :')
Ooh I haven't heard of House of Leaves!! I HOPE IT'S SUPER GOOD. 😀
You would LLLLLLLOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE Stars Above! Read it ASAP! So worth it, felt like it wrapped up all loose ends and tied them into a pretty bow for the series.
I believe you!! I absolutely adored the rest of the books so I’m sure I’ll love the novellas too, right!?😂
CAIT, I WILL BOTH MURDER YOU IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT OR IF YOU DON’T READ WOLF BY WOLF WITHIN, SAY, THE NEXT MONTH.
IS THIS UNDERSTOOD?
In less threaten-y terms, I think the only other two on this list I’ve read and can give you opinions on are The Mirror King (which was fine. I liked it about the same as the first book. And it had a super realistic protrayal of how someone thinks after being sexually assaulted [which might be a spoiler?? I think it happened in the first book {halp I can’t remember}]), and The Weight of Feathers, which had gorgeous writing but was somewhat lacking plot-wise, which was sad.
PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON MY POOR SOUL, AINE, I WILL DO AS YOU SAY BECAUSE I HAVE THE FEAR PUT IN ME BY THIS COMMENT. *dashes away screaming* 😂
Agh, I’ve heard that about Weight of Feathers which is probably why I’m subconsciously procrastinating it. And I actually heard The Mirror King was really boring.😂 BUT I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT BECAUSE I WANT IT TO BE GOOD. #CaitLogic 😂
I also haven’t read Stars Above despite being desperate to buy it when it came out. I think part of me believes if I don’t read it, then the series isn’t really over. LMAO!
I actually TOTALLY understand that feeling!! TOTALLY. Sometimes I procrastinate books purely because I don’t want them to be over.😂
READ SOLDIER, CAIT! It was infinitely better than the two previous books and the love triangle gets fixed but it will kill your soul and the twists and turns are deadly – be warned.
AHHHH I WILL SOON I PROMISE!! (And omg I hope Garrett wins. And I’m feeling like he might not?? 😭😭)
I cannot wait to see what you think of it! And eep, I’m not saying. Nope. Not all… just be prepared for all the feels and pain!
CAIT! You still haven’t read Wolf by Wolf or Gemina?! They’re two of my favorite books of 2016 and I cannot wait to see what you think of them. (Although I know we’ll probably end up twinning haha). Thanks for sharing, and fabulous choices! <3
I’M SORRY ZOE. I’M SUCH A DISAPPOINTMENT.😂 I should really get onto BOTH asap since I know you love them and our bookish twinning rarely fails right?!?
I don’t know if this makes me feel better or worse about my gargantuan TBR. To know that even a creature such as yourself…can fall short of reading goals…THE HORROR. Then again, I haven’t even read THE WRATH AND THE DAWN yet, despite having owned it since summer 2015, so I think you’re still (far, FAR) ahead of me, haha.
WE’RE ALL DOOMED. *collapses dramatically on the floor* I’m pretty sure we just need that whole day (week? month? YEAR????) devoted to reading and we’ll be fine.😂
It would have been too easy for me to list like 30 books from 2016 alone so I’m impressed you chose only ten since 1884 haha.
I need to read TR&TD, too! I actually wasn’t ready to let go of it last year so I didn’t read it. I think I’m ready now but still eeeep. Same with Gemina but also, the mixed reviews.
I’ve been in the middle of The Invisible Library since August now so that’s how that’s going for me…
I was VERY restrained for this post. *nods* Hence 1884 is probably still glaring at me.😂 And omg SAME. I have a problem with series endings because I hate saying goodbye and knowing there’s no more! Plus I actually thought it was a trilogy so I was cruuushed when I realised there’d only be two!
(Omg that’s not good news for The Invisible Library then.😭)
My TBR piles is also worryingly gargantuan and there are so many books I wanted to read last year and never got around to. But then there are also books that have been there for like seven years that I don’t want to read anymore but the stubborn part of me tells me I have to that I can’t just give it away. I think I have a problem. I too want to read Wolf by Wolf this year because I have heard such good things but I am a procrastinator as well as a reader so who knows how long it might take me to get to it
I totally relate! I sometimes think “eh I’m not so keen on that one anymore” but I still want to read it because I want to read everything anyway?!?😂 OOh I hope we both get around to Wolf by Wolf soon then! At least the sequel is out in case it has a horrible cliffhanger, right?!
Well I admit I have not read any of the books you have mentioned. Although I have heard of most of them. One book I put off reading last year was The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater. I finished it a couple of days ago and now plan to whizz through the series. I do believe you have hooked me on them. Anyway that was one book I was ashamed to not have got to. I also just finished The Fault in Our Stars today. It kept glaring at me when I went to the library. I know it’s been around for about five years so. I am so behind but I loved it. This is an awfully long comment.
YAAAAS MY LIFE GOAL IS TO HOOK EVERYONE ON MAGGIE STIEFVATER. So I shall be here. Being notoriously pleased. :’) And AHHH that’s wonderful you read TFIOS! I love that book. I’ve re-read it but omg this makes me want to reread it again sometime. 😀
I love the title of this post.
AND YOU HAVEN”T READ THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER YET? It’s BRILLIANT!
Nora & Kettle is also really good and pretty underrated, I think. I haven’t seen anyone talk about it.
Also, hope you enjoy Soldier when you read it. Beware of that notorious Julie Kagawa ending tho..
I willlll read TR&TD soon. I promise.😂 Hopefully I’ll re-read the first one this month and then be ready to read it straight after that?!? I CAN ONLY HOPE.😂 And omg what’s a notorious Julie Kagawa ending?! This is my first series I’ve read by her.😂 SHOULD I BE SCARED.
Aaah, hope you enjoy them both!
And yes, you should be scared. Her writing is great, but her endings leave you screaming ‘I NEED MORE’ and not in ‘aw this is cute i want more about my otp’ way but more the ‘WHTFJIODJAK IS HAPPENING NOPE NOPE NOPE’ way. 😀
Ok, you should definitely read Gemina because it doesn’t have anything less than Illuminae but I don’t think I will ever read THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER BY RENEE AHDIEH — I just really didn’t like the first one.
AHHHH I’m so happy to hear that about Gemina!! 😀
I’ve not read Gemina either! It’s glaring at me from my shelves though so I feel like I probably should soon – especially when Illuminae was so amazing. Here’s to hoping we can both squeeze it in this year…
Ahhh I hope we do both get to read it soon!! I mean SURELY it will live up to the wonderfulness that is Illuminae right?!? *crosses fingers*
You’ll be glad to know that The Invisible Library kinda does include the secret to immortality.
Also, it’s a lot of fun.
OH GOOD. Because that’s 100% what I need to know.😂😂
omg how could I forget about Gemina!?! I loved Illuminae and meant to read Gemina and then just never got the chance. The Invisible Library seems really interesting. I’m going to have to add that to my TBR. The Weight of Feathers is on my TBR, I meant to read that for the Diversathon, but I have a terrible track record with readathons. There’s another one coming up some time soon, so hopefully I can get to that then.
Saaaame. At least we can be in Gemina-less-shame together right?! 😂 And I actually have never joined a readathon because I feel like I’d never keep track of what I was doing haha. Hopefully we both get a chance for Weight of Feathers sometime this year right?!
lunartic, that is a good one. Then I am one, because I have read them all. it is good to be more selective =P
or just download the book into your brain like androids XD
love it
It would be AMAZING to just download more books into our brains like androids.😂 That would solve so many problems haha.
yup. Linh Cinder had it right! download and recall XD
I FEEL YOUR PAIN TOO AND AM IN THE SAME BOAT!!! I haven’t read so many books I promised to read.
This is literally me: “I promise that I will read this, this year because the cover is so pretty and it looks so so good. I promise.”
At the end of the year this is me: “Okay guys. I didn’t read these three billion books but it isn’t my fault. I promise that it is not my fault.” *meanwhile eating cheetos and laughing while watching funny videos*
I read a couple on this list such as Stars Above and The Shadow Queen and I loved them both. I hope you love them too. 🙂
Oh and I finally wrote my review of Winterspell. Beware of the unpopular opinion time [cause I loved it and almost no one else did]: http://queenofallbooks.blogspot.com/2017/01/winterspell-by-claire-legrand-review.html
Agh there’s just not enough time to read, right??!😂 I say that to myself ALL THE TIME. Or I’ll buy a book I’m “dying to read absolutely” and then not read it for 5 years. *facepalm*
Hey Cait,
even though Rose & Dagger appears one year later in German I will probably read it before you – in February!!! xD
Invisible Library is also on my TBR, though not so long yet ^^
OMG, how beautiful is Mirror King???! ♥♥♥
And Talon… read the first two books and the third is also awaiting me since 2 months but it´s so huge and I also forgot so much and yes, the stupid love triangle. I prefer Cobalt because -DRAGON!- but think she will choose Garret -.-
Mary <3
You WILL probably read it before I get to it.😂 At this rate it’ll take me 500 years to get around to re-reading the first book and then reading Rose and the Dagger! *buries self in shame*
And the Mirror King is GORGEOUS. Those colours. <3
omg I prefer Garrett haha. 😉 At least one of us will be happy?!
Cait!!! How can you?! As ultimative bookdragonqueen, you can just not prefer a soldier over a DRAGOOOON!!! #beashamed
I KNOW I FEEL KIND OF BAD. But Cobalt was so annoying to me and kind of possessive whereas Garrett was so SWEET and jfakdslads little cutie.😂
I still need to read The Rose and the Dagger and Stars Above as well. I feel like I’ve had the books for a long time, but I just haven’t gotten to them yet. I also need to read Gemina! Great list and I hope you love them all when you do read them. 😀
Oh good. I’m not alone in my shame of not having read them yet.😂😂
Oh I have so many books I didn’t read last year I am sure the list rivals your TBR. Do not underestimate the powers of my wanting to hoard books and my inability to actually sit down and read them! *lol*
What should you read first…hmm, that’s a tough question. There are a lot of good titles to choose from on your top ten alone. Nora & Kettle was very good. I rated that four stars. 🙂 The Invisible Library was good too, though don’t expect it to help you minimize or manage your TBR. It has to do with books that never existed as well as ones that do, so that opens up a whole new set of TBR complications!
Oh I don’t underestimate a bookworm’s hoarding powers at all.😂 We’re quite talented at getting in waaaay more books than we have time to devour right?!?
I’m so glad you liked Nora And Kettle too!! I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT IT…and yet still haven’t read it. I’m actually the worst.
Very talented. 😉 It reminds me of some creative solutions for knitters that might apply to book hoarders as well. When you’ve got an extra skein or too of yarn, you can hide it in an unused gravy boat or in a deep freeze if you’re a vegetarian and don’t use the deep freeze for meat. I’d think you could do something similar for books? Except maybe not the deep freeze exactly, I’d be afraid of some kind of damage to the paper (though you could hide all the horror novel in there!).
From this list I’ve only read Gemina and there’s absolute no judging here, because I just picked it up January 2nd 😛 It’s such a great read! I finished it in under 48 hours (which is a personal record for a book with so many pages :0). You should really pick it up soon, it’s so good!!
OH GOOD. I don’t feel so bad now about my Gemina shame.😂 I’m suuuure it’ll be brilliant honestly, I just need to stop being such a scaredy-cat.😂
Haha yep :)) You can do it! ^^
*chains you to kindle* There.
I’ve only read Stars Above of your list. I do own The Rose and the Dagger (that was on my list too) and as I recently read The Wrath and the Dawn I can finally get to it. 😀
YOU’VE SOLVED ALL MY LIFE PROBLEMS. 😂 I just need to re-read The Wrath and the Dawn and then I can read the sequel, but gahhhhh why do I not have more hours in my day!?😂
What do you mean you haven’t read these yet??? HOW DARE YOU??? Ahem. I haven’t read most of these either. Including Gemina. *sobs* BUT I have read The Shadow Queen and it is magnificent so. Go forth and read it.
AHHHHH I’m glad you liked Shadow Queen!! And it has dragons right?!? I am 100% here for all dragons.
love this

I’m so glad!
I haven’t read The Invisible Library yet either, but it sounds perfect – however, I will be reading it later this month for a challenge! 🙂
Also Gemina is excellent – it definitely lives up to the hype!
Happy Reading!
Lauren @ Always Me
Oh good on you!! I hope you love it…and I hope I stop procrastinating and read it soon.😂 And OH THAT IS GOOD NEWS ABOUT GEMINA!!
Shadow queen and The weight of feathers both just look so beautiful! Pretty books are the demise of my purse.
Saaaaame. How can we refuse them when they’re just so darn PRETTY and want our attention?!
The Invisible Library is somewhere inside my tbr pile, too. I bought it last year because it’s about libraries and because LOOK AT THE COVER, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. I will do this year. I will.
Probably.
That is 100% ME and why I bought it and yet haven’t read it yet. 😂 We can both be ashamed of our Invisible Library-less lives.😂
There are so many books I didn’t read last year because I just discovered the blogging community last year *cries* I’ll make up for it this year, though.
I totally get that feeling! The first year I actually got involved in the book community I felt like I was DROWNING IN BOOKS because everyone was so far ahead.😂
Thanks for the reminder, I need to read The Rose and Dagger too!
And yeeees, read Gemina. You won’t be disappointed!
Hope you get to all these books soon 😉
AHHHH I’M SO GLAD YOU LOVED GEMINA!! The worst thing is a disappointing sequel so eeep, I’m happy about this!
I was sitting here nodding along like “yeah, me too Cait” hahah. For most, anyway. Obviously I read Nora & Kettle 😉 And Gemina and The Rose and the Dagger! Jeann’s right about Gemina, btw. Rose was good, though not QUITE as good as Wrath. OH! Bonus reason to read Nora & Kettle? The companion book is coming out in May!! It’s called Breaker and the Sun, and it is also awesome, and it has a cover now, and it is beautiful. I just updated my Goodreads status for it so hopefully you see it 😉 (I don’t want to link, because I feel like things get sent to spam that way, and I don’t want to end up in spam, boo.) And thank you for telling your minions that they should listen to me! ♥♥ They might want to, at least about THIS, because I know I am not alone in my love for it haha.
I need to read Wolf by Wolf, The Weight of Feathers, The Invisible Library, Shadow Queen, and well, I still haven’t read The Orphan Queen yet so… very behind. I am also still not even past Scarlet in The Lunar Chronicles. It’s just a big old fail. We need more time. Or fewer real life responsibilities/needs. Who has time to like, shower, when we could be reading instead? #Priorities
Oooh, so if I procrastinate Nora & Kettle a bit longer I won’t have to reread before the companion! WIN FOR ME AND MY TERRIBLE MEMORY. *awards self with cake* 😂 (OH and don’t worry about my spam because I check it religiously for each post. hehe.) And of course my minions should listen to you. You are a Grandly Inspiring Blogger Who Clearly Threatens My TBR With Wonderful Recommendations Even Though My TBR Is Taller Than Mt. Everest By This Point. (PS. That can be your official title yes? I’m sure it’ll fit on a business card.)
Who has to do anything about life or adulting when WE COULD JUST READ!! #bookwormlogic
I haven’t read any of these books either…opps. There are just so many books and so little time. Thanks for the post.
It’s truuuuue. There are far too many books for the amount of time we have for reading.😭😂
Ahhhh Cait you HAVE to read The Tose and The Dagger! I was also afraid it wouldn’t be as great as the first book was, but I was not disappointed. It was just as good, and I COULD NOT STOP reading it. I hope you’ll LOVE it when you get to it!
I really want to read The Weight of Feathers as well, I have it on my TBR sicnce 33243 years approximately, and I NEED to get to it, it sounds like such a good story! But oh, the infinite TBR problem is REAL. Great post! 🙂
OMG THAT IS EXCELLENT NEWS. Half of everyone is saying it was disappointing and the others are saying it was perfect. So excuse me while I have a small life crisis here.😂 But I mean I WILL definitely read it! I just probably need to re-read the first one. And hopefully we both get around to Weight of Feathers eventually?!? If that darn TBR will let us.😂
Bwah ha ha ha, I told myself I was just going to look at your list, that was it. Then I say “Nora & Kettle’ and I love Peter Pan stories… so it’s on my list. My physical (and Kindle) TBR pile is embarrassing, but I get distracted by other books, or I’m just not in the mood for it yet. My excuse is that I really have to focus on my work TBR list from the latest book order, then I can focus on mine.
I haven’t read ANY of these so HAHAHA we can despair together. I haven’t even read Illuminae… *hides*
*hides with you* Don’t worry…hyped books can be scary! I UNDERSTAND.
I keep meaning to read Red Queen (and all the other books in the series) but I just never have the time.
There’s never enough time for all the reading we need to do, right?!
Gemina is also on my TBR – although I think I had a “sequel syndrome” because I haven’t picked up any of the sequels I’ve been meaning to read. I’ve read The Shadow Queen from your list, and it is a pretty good book. Good luck on your reading goals this year!
I so hear you with sequel syndrome. I HAVE IT CONSTANTLY. I say I like series but I also am terrified of them.😂
I totally feel you on neglecting to read a ton of books in 2016. *eyes TBR pile* But here’s to hoping we read more of those books we’ve got on them in 2017? (I’m saying this with full optimism, even though the chances of it happening are slim to none considering all the new and wonderful stuff coming out in 2017…) But anyway, I thought I’d just say that I loved The Weight of Feathers, The Mirror King and The Shadow Queen and I hope you love them too when you get a chance to read them!
I’m full of optimism too which is RIDICULOUS OF ME.😂 Because I’m collecting so many books already and it’s only January?!?! Help.😂
I’m so excited for ALL of these and I’m making it a priority to at least definitely read them this year. *watches TBR try and fall on my head*
This happens to me ALL. THE. TIME. I have so many books that I’ve started, but have yet to finish because I get sucked into a different book, lol.
Too much to read! Not enough time!
Why do they call us Lunartics and not just Lunatics? Cause we definitely are such… just sayin’
Because “Lunartics” is a play on the word “lunar”!
The only book on here I’ve read is The Rose and the Dagger which I finished a few days ago and OH MY GOD IT’S AMAZING!!!!! It hurt a lot, I was trying not to cry while driving because of it, but it was such a good conclusion (my review shall be up soonish so I can’t give away all my thoughts 😛 ).
I need to make time for Gemina and Stars Above at some point soon because they’re both staring at me from the TBR, waiting.
AHH THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS! I feel like half of everyone is telling me it was awful and half is raving for its goodness.😂 I will 100% read it soon thougH!
OMG! Every single one of these books are sitting on my own TBR Pile. Well… the exceptions being Nora & Kettle (How did I not know about this one?! I love peter pan retellings!) and Weight of feathers… however I promise to quickly rectify this terrible situation and will we ordering them asap lol.
Curses… now my TBR pile is even bigger!
Nora & Kettle looks like it’s going to be soooo good. *reminds self to read it immediately* 😂 And I just actually FINALLY read Weight of Feathers and it was 100000% perfection.
Let the comment vomiting begin! Ha ha. I have The Invisible Library, and Nora and Kettle waiting on my fir me on my Kindle, as well as The Orphan Queen. I have been waiting to find The Weight Of Feathers on ebook sale because… I NEED! I would have read the Wolf By Wolf books because I adored The Walled City, but as you know I don’t play well with wartime stories. I am, however, excited to see what the author’s next offering will be! 😀
