I’m above and beyond excited to have a copy of THESE BROKEN STARS by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner. Just look at my excited face!
Sci-fi. Survival. Loveable cover. What more could you possible hope for this side of the Milky Way?! PLUS, to make life infinitely more exciting, tomorrow I have Amie Kaufman visiting for an epic interview!!!
Therefore, I made a list (as I do) of things I adored in These Broken Stars. You can read my normal, sane(ish) review here if you wish it.
These Broken Stars hits shelves on December 10th, 2013. Thank you Allen&Unwin for the ARC!
1. It was a survival story.
A lot of time romances are about two adorable people surviving…each other. But in These Broken Stars, we get the added bonus of horrific spaceship crashes, weird animals, freaky unknown planets, and bad food to add to a stressful situation. I absolutely adore survival books! (Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, anyone?) It totally made my day to
see read about them trudging through the jungle.
In a ballgown.
With fancy shoes.
2. Lilac acted like a princess and that was awesome.
I hate it when girly-girls are slammed in books. It’s OKAY not to be tough and macho. So while Lilac acted like she was above everyone at times, she a) had reasons, and b) wasn’t unlikable. Also, her softness and humanity was awesome to read. She felt real. She toughened with the situation, of course, but she always had a certain Lilac-ness about her. She never lost the soft, need-to-be-protected, part of herself even after that epic plot twist when —
Yeah, never mind.
3. Tarver wasn’t 16.
Okay! Lilac was sixteen (though she had her 17th birthday in the book). But Tarver was a decorated young war hero. It’s hard to imagine him being a sixteen-year-old squirt. And he WASN’T! Hallelujah for crushing cliches! He was 18 and very knowledgable about “his” world — which was the gritty realistic life of a soldier. He was rough around the edges but so polite. He was a gentleman! Even though his interior monologue was giving you the real scoop on how he felt about things…like Lilac for instance.
4. Lilac and Tarver’s relationship.
Expecting some goopy mush? Not at the beginning!
This is Lilac.
This is Tarver.
Can you not see how this was totally awesome to read??! I LOVED their relationship. I loved how it grew and matured. No insta-love here, peoples!
5. The ending that blew my mind.
Obviously I can’t explain this one. So I will simply torture you with the fact that yes: there is an epic plot twist. And no: you will not see it coming. And of course: you will have a book hangover.
This is one of the best reads of the year (and I’ve read a loooot of books this year)!! I’m awed by the writing. I’m wowed by the characters. I’m in love with the cover. (What? It’s adorable.) I want more of this series and definitely more from these authors.
