Hi Whitney, thanks so much for chatting with us today about your new release! 🤗 Tell us about yourself and what inspired you to start writing!
I am originally from a small town in north Texas, but now live in a quaint little town in Arkansas. I’ve been writing since I was a child, and used to enter writing competitions, breeding a healthy spirit when it came to improving my skills. I majored in English in college and went on to write/edit for a major Disney news site. I’ve always wanted to write a book, but it wasn’t until December of 2021 that I heard Raven arguing with Zeke and decided to jot down just bare minimum details.
I didn’t revisit the document until the end of January 2022 and her story just flew out of my fingers. The need to write has always been there, but Raven was the inspiration to sit down and actually get a story written down!
How long did it take A Kingdom of Flame and Fury to go from the first spark of an idea to the finished novel?
I started writing AKOFAF at the end of January and had 130k words down in a week. From there, Zeke decided he wanted his own POV and I had to rewrite some of the first book to add him in. From start to a comfortable finish with fine-tuned edits, it took four months. I wrote and rewrote nearly every day, and would take breaks in between to work on the second book of the series.
130K in a week is absolutely incredible. What inspired A Kingdom of Flame and Fury?
100% Raven. She was very, very loud in my head and when I would write out certain scenes, she would promptly rewrite them.
If you could spend the day anywhere inside your book, where would you go?
Seolia! Raven’s kingdom. It’s an island kingdom and they throw fun festivals throughout the year. It’s basically a very happy, very close-knit family.
Seolia definitely sounds amazing from the descriptions. 😍💛 Introduce us to your main characters, Raven and Zeke! They are quite the dynamite duo!
We meet Raven as a twenty-four year old queen who was abandoned as a baby. She believes that she has absolutely no right to the throne, but serves her people the best she can. Raven is very sweet, very loving, but she has a dark side. She is morally-grey when it comes to protecting her kingdom and her people. She considers all of them to be her family since she didn’t have one of her own growing up. And Raven loves everyone. Everyone has a place in her kingdom — no matter their background or where they came from, and she makes sure that everyone she meets always feels welcome and appreciated.
We meet Zeke as an angry, irresponsible thirty year old man, who has a drinking problem. Through a series of events, he meets Raven and realizes that he can no longer live his life that way if he wants a chance to be the man she needs. He is very protective and dislikes everyone, except for her. He has his own self-reflecting journey that you, as the readers, get to see and you find yourself rooting for his growth, even though he has some deep-rooted issues… which you quickly learn all about.
Do you have a favourite writing snack or drink?
Coffee in the mornings. For AKOFAF, I would need to stay up till 1 or 2 in the morning, so I would order a frosted coffee from Chick-Fil-A around 7pm and that would hold me over until I could find a place to stop writing. I basically lived off only coffee for the first few weeks of writing AKOFAF.
What is a writer without their coffee after all 😩🙌🏻 If you could take any souvenir from A Kingdom of Flame and Fury’s world to our own world, what would it be?
Raven’s magic. Does that count?
It definitely would be the best choice 😂 Thanks so much for this interview, Whitney, and all the great answers!!
