Unlike my ability to chill, which I’m totally never going to find, I discovered some incredible authors in 2017!
Even though I like to pretend I could be Sherlock Holmes someday, the honest truth is: I’m very bad at finding things. If you put a really nice inky pen in my hand, I will absolutely lose it 2 seconds later. It’s not even my fault. It’s rude that inanimate objects don’t sit still when told.
However, I still HAVE managed to discover some incredible authors in 2017 that were completely new to me. Some of them are debuters so it makes sense that they’re new and green and just crawled out of the damp dark earth where all writers come from. However some are new because I didn’t read them until JUST NOW. Probably because they were hiding from me. Ridiculous. I am not scary. I put my battle axe down just now and sometimes I even brush my hair to stop looking like a mad scientist.
I’m great.
I’m also linking up with Top Ten Tuesday for their prompt “Top Ten New-To-Me Authors I Read In 2017”.
And also like HOLY HECK I didn’t realise The Broke And The Bookish were closing down?!? This is the second-to-last TTT prompt and then it’s moving hosts. I’d cRY except I’m a Vulcan. And I feel bad for all the times I’ve cheated doing this prompt. Which has been, like…all of them. Wow, Cait.
But omg please no one leave me here to think up my own blog topics. No one deserves that horror experience.
1. MACKENZIE LEE
Definitely one of my new FAVOURITE AUTHORS OF EVER despite having only read…um…one of her books. But The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue is definitely everything perfect in this world. And pfft, you know what? I don’t let little technicalities like “I could’ve read more of her books by now but I haven’t because I live with my head in a bucket” get in the way of a wholesome and life-consuming adoration. And I’ll have you know that I did in fact go and buy her first book, This Monstrous Thing, pretty much right away.
Even if I still have not read it.
Look do I look like a functional human to you?? No. Keep the wild expectations down there, son.
I will absolutely and definitely read everything she ever writes forevermore.
2. AMANDA FOODY
I’m an absolutely complete fangirl and dork, but I used to blog on a writing-co-blog with Amanda and some others back in the day (I’M FAMOUS) and we’ve chatted on twitter a few times! And by “chatted” I meant I came crying about I’m Going To Be An Author I’m Panicking Is There An Island In The Bermuda Triangle I Can Retreat To™. Anyway. She is absolutely lovely and also coincidentally writes freaking amazing books. Daughter Of The Burning City is all super dark carnivals and magic and murders. My favourite things. Also it features a Slytherin sassy conniving magic boy love-interest who is also asexual which is something I really really want to read more of. UGH this book was too good.
And Ace of Shades comes out in April and I’m so freaking EXCITE.
3. NIC STONE
Now, again! Only a debut author so it is 599% logical that I only discovered her book, Dear Martin, this year. But I just want to point at it and say “LOOK. GOOD AND IMPORTANT BOOK WHY IS NOT EVERYONE READING IT.” I feel it’s one that’s going underrated?! So behold.
And one thing I really really loved about her style is how concise and succinct it is. Her debut is so short and punchy that it doesn’t even give you a second to lose concentration. And the topics are obviously incredible and needed.
I mean. Don’t sleep on this one.
4. LAURA TIMS
I full on picked up her second book, THE ART OF FEELING, on this wild whim because I reeeeally want to read more books featuring disabilities. AND HOLY HECK WHAT BUCKET HAVE I BEEN LIVING IN?!?! I can’t get over how much I laughed! And had vastly feels-stabbing emotions. Like I was not prepared. I just thought this’d be the average contemporary.
Oh I am am sweet summer paper fry. <— my new nickname by the way
Least to say I need her other book called PLEASE DON’T TELL which is a phrase I shout a lot, usually directed at my TBR when I’m adding to it and sobbing because I have books from 2013 on there I should’ve read by now.
5. CHRISTINA LAUREN
This is actually two authors: Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings. And there is a 99% chance I do NOT want to read their other books which seem to be pretty much erotica hah hha hahaha. Wow. I want to go far far away now. But anyway, I wanted to put them on this list because I FREAKING LOVED AUTOBOYOGRAPHY AND I WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.
It’s about writers, which is a huge reason it resonated with me + there’s queerness and author shaped panic and it discusses religion (particularly the problematic sides) and all these things just…gah. I have emotions. I have been hit. NEW FAVOURITE.
6. HANNAH MOSKOWITZ
So I read TEETH this year which surprisingly isn’t about the dentist. Although I really put off mentioning it because when I shout, “TEETH IS AN AMAZING BOOK!!!” it sound like a dentist’s memoir and ew.
But the actually book is about mermaids and disabilities and mental illness and queer magical fish and really really sad boys and juST IT WAS GOOD. Bonus: it wants to rip your heart out.
So she’s written an absolute heckin’ ton of books I have not read and my TBR hates me but I’m interested particularly in A HISTORY OF GLITTER AND BLOOD because the title sounds fun.
7. ANNA-MARIE MCLEMORE
I actually read all THREE of her books this year!! Due to me procrastinating her first two books for no reason at all because that’s who I am as a person
Least to say I’m suuuuch a fan. Her writing is the most gorgeous thing you will ever eat. I didn’t like WHEN THE MOON WAS OURS so much because it had 0% of a plot…although still freaking gorgeous. But THE WEIGHT OF FEATHERS = ugh I’m obsessed. And WILD BEAUTY!?? I want to live in it. Magical boys in magical gardens and witchy girls who can grow flowers at will and my hEART beating messily.
And she writes disabilities and queer people and different races and it’s so good and her writing is mAGIC.
8. CRISTIN TERRILL
I read HERE LIES DANIEL TATE this year and let’s just say: this book wants to throw your brain for a froot loop. And you’ll thank it. Which is totally messed up. Like my mind?!??? It has been played with.
Basically this book is an excellent thriller about a con artist masquerading as a missing boy and he gets into a lot of mESS he didn’t anticipate. It’s beautiful. Everything hurts.
And I need to read ALL OUR YESTERDAYS like…yesterday. (Shh, Zoe, I know you’re saying I told you so.)
9. JASON REYNOLDS
Now I know he’s so so famous but for some reason I hadn’t heard of his books until this year?! Look this is what I mean about not paying attention. But here I am now. Late again, but I brought cake, so please forgive me.
I borrowed ALL AMERICAN BOYS on a whim from the library and woahhhhh it was good. It was published in 2015 too and look at me reading backlist titles. Anyway this is another really important book (also #BlackLivesMatter and #OwnVoices) and dives into current issues in America. No I’m not American but I watch you guys set your hair on fire so I like to be informed.
I want to read LONG WAY DOWN and MILES MORALES!
10. ADAM SILVERA
DEFINITELY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE NEW-FOUND AUTHORS. Plus he’s really awesome on twitter and writes fast first drafts (#RELATE) and just everything about his books is fantastic and unusual. I really love the unusualness ok.
I’m pretty sure he drinks readers’ tears for breakfast but we all have our side hobbies.
I haven’t read his debut MORE HAPPY THAN NOT yetttt, but I love HISTORY IS ALL YOU LEFT ME and THEY BOTH DIE AT THE END. Ugh I really love them. Definitely going to reread this year.
I loveeeeeeee Christina Lauren. Her adult contemp. romances are THE BEST (along with J. Lynn.) I have not read their newest one yet, but I definitely, DEFINITELY need to! Last year I discovered Rosamund Hodge, and I’m so in love with her books. I mean, I’m a sucker for anything fairy tale related, and hers are just so uniquely gorgeous and weird in the best way possible. I also fell in love with Roshani Chokshi, too. THE STAR-TOUCHED QUEEN was one of my favorites last year. I cannot wait to read the sequel & everything else she comes out with next. 🙂 Also: ALL OUR YESTERDAYS was amazing. I read it literally years ago and still think about it. 🙂
Ohhh so I should actually look up her adult novels then?😂 I’m kind of terrified of adult romances but Autoboyography was so darn wonderful. Eep. And oh that reminds me I need to read more of Rosamund Hodge’s books! I read Crimson Bound YEARS ago and never any more even though I really liked it!?? And Roshani Chokshi has the most gorgeous writing style!!
AGH WHY IS EVERYONE SO AMAZING AND TALENTED.
In 2017 I discovered James Islington, an Aussie fantasy author (YAY!!!), and his series The Licanius Trilogy. I gobbled my way through the first book, The Shadow of What Was Lost, and was completely blown away by the wicked twist on the penultimate page. It felt like I’d been smacked upside the head by a flying refrigerator that’s how good it was. The rest of the trilogy is high on my TBR list, and I’m excited to see what projects he moves onto next!
Omg how have I not heard of him?! I need to read more Aussie authors and I LOVE your description of the plot twist.😂 Best reaction ever!
I don’t loose everything I touch, unless you count my train of thought… um… Where was I going with this?
Thank you for adding to my TBR list. Again. Come on, Cait. Seriously, STAHP. Okay, I’m kidding. Please don’t stop. I like building my TBR, and your blog is one of my top sources for doing so. 😉
So I haven’t read any of the books by the authors you listed here, but I shall get there someday.
Hope you’re having a happy New Year!
Train of thoughts are impossible to keep. I literally walk into another room and forget everything I ever thought of.😂 AND YOU’RE WELCOME FOR THE TBR ATTACK. Twice in one week on my blog hahaha. I’m great.😂
When you think about how many BRILLIANT authors we miss on a daily basis… it’s just so hard to follow up with everything that goes on in the book world! (I feel like it’s mostly related to the fact that there are literally BILLIONS of us out there and a lot of those people contribute, so you know. Impossible!)
Actually, somebody has recently recommended me All American Boys… and now you too 🙂 I guess I’ll have to look into it.
I’m familiar with at least half the books on this list, if not the authors, but some I actually haven’t heard at all! (Like Teeth? And what do mermaids have to do with teeth? XD now you have me curious). Great list 🙂
I knoooow right?! It’s terrifying thinking of all the good books I’m potentially missing!! So basically I have to live forever and read everything just in case.😂
And yes! I hope you like All American Boys!!
OMG READ TEETH. IT HURTS AND YOU SHOULD HURT WITH ME.😂
I STILL HAVEN’T READ ANY OF ANNA MCLEMORE’S BOOKS and i just…REALLY WANT TO. They sound SO MAGICAL and SO diverse and the covers are always pretyyy and i need them on my bookshelf (WILD BEAUTY IS THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY) I actually…haven’t read any of Adam’s books? I mean they SOUND GOOD but not exactly my cup of tea but everyone says they are heartbreaking so I must try at least ONE and see If I like it! And I had no idea that CRISTIN TERRILL was the author of All Our Yesterdays AND Here Lies Daniel Tate! WHICH IS WHY I NEED TO READ BOTH OF THESE!
and *Screeches* AMANDA FOODY IS ON HERE! DUDE, kjsdfhiugweriuhqw. okay, i’m done. I WAS introduced to Schwab and Stiefvater and Marie Lu and Bardugo this year. ALL WHO HAVE BECOME somewhat favourite authors!
You should!! They’re so gloriously gorgeous and magical and actually reading fantasy that features queer/POC characters is amazing. 😍 And yes if you like heartbreaking totally try at least one Silvera book. 😂 I mean nothing says “good book” like having your feels punched, right?! *nods to make this seem normal*
AHHH I’m so glad you discovered Schwab and Stiefvater this year! MY 2 TOP FAVOURITE AUTHORS OF EVER.
Ooh, I’ve only heard of Mackenzie Lee and Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings on the list. I’ll have to check out the others at some point! I have so much trouble trying to find new authors to read, I wish it was easier to do.
Omg really?! I am constantly swamped with dozens of authors I want to try.😂 Especially debuters!!
I guess I just must not be looking in the right spots! I recently started using goodreads though so thats been helping somewhat.
I haven’t read ANY of these, wow. But I did read Six of Crows, which was my first Leigh Bardugo! And I liked it, so you don’t need to come after me with that battle axe (or worse, the mad scientist hair…)
I put the battle axe down!! I am safe and normal!! This is a legit statement and not suspicious at all!! 😂😂
(Also so so glad you liked Six of Crows!!! WAFFLES ALL ROUND.)
I have read exactly zilch of these authors…..but I do plan to read Amanda Foody and Mackenzi Lee at some time in the very near future. I’ve heard really good things about Adam Silvera, but I’m not sure his books are really for me, though I’ve seen him tweet that he’s writing a fantasy novel so I might read that when it comes out! I definitely want to try Anna-Marie McLemore’s books because everyone seems to really like them. I found some really great new authors last year, bigger ones like Samantha Shannon, Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor and debuts like Stephanie Garber and Tricia Levenseller. I also really enjoyed The Girl From Everywhere, my first Heidi Heilig book and The Crown’s Game duology, my first time reading Evelyn Skye. I read 16 new authors in 2017, which I thought was pretty good.
Oh yes I’m so excited for Adam Silvera’s fantasy novel!! I love that he does a wide range of genres ajdfksald that’s really awesome when authors have so many skills! And Anna-Marie McLemore’s writing is just AMAZING. I seriously have no idea how she writes so beautifully!? Goals. 😍
Oh I’m glad you like Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor! And YES I also read Stephanie Graber (and need to read Levenseller) 😂😂
Mackenzi Lee was also new to me, and I bought her first novel This Monstrous Thing as soon as I finished The Gentleman’s Guide too!!!! Still haven’t read it either, but does that matter? I don’t think so.
Autoboyography is SO HIGH ON MY TBR!!! That cover made me fall in love. What a title, too. Adam Silvera was also on my list and I read ALL of his books. More Happy Than Not (as per usual in AS books) took a turn I was not expecting and TOTALLY left me sobbing by the end. Highly recommend, even if it’s not my favorite of his books! Anne Marie McLemore and Jason Reynolds are two authors I really want to check out, especially that book Long Way Down which sounds FANTASTIC.
Omg I’m glad we’re the same with The Monstrous Thing.😂😂 I guess I’m procrastinating it because WHAT COULD LIVE UP TO MONTY AND PERCY REALLY!??😂 And Autoboyography’s cover is to darn gorgeous. (WHY ARE COVERS SO BEAUTIFUL THESE DAYS?!) And I totally believe you that More Happy Than Not left you sobbing…all his books seem to totally like to punch one in the feels. Like I said, 100% sure Adam Silvera lives off his readers tears.😂
First of all, I PRETEND TO BE SHERLOCK HOLMES A LOT TOO. Second, my memory is rusting fast I can’t even keep track of the things I’ve lost (I’m still looking for a missing memory stick because if I don’t find it, my mom will kill me).
So yeah. This year, I can say I’ve met authors that completely stole my heart. First on the list is Sarah J. Maas. SHE IS A QUEEN OH MY. I enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses and I’m going to read Throne of Glass when the series is complete (though if I can’t help myself I’ll just read the first book tomorrow). I enjoyed reading Queen Betsy the Vampire Queen series too by Mary Janice Davidson. Well, the plot is a bit ridiculous and messy but it is super funny and there are good points in the books too. Also, she dedicated a book in the series to Benedict Cumberbatch which gained her a special place in my heart. Stephanie Garber is pretty awesome too. I enjoyed reading Caraval (despite the negative reviews) and I love the fact the she replies to my tweets to her all the time. I mean, it’s amazing to actually interact with an author of a book you’ve enjoyed reading. Then there’s Brittany Cavallaro of the Charlotte Holmes series too (because I eat up all books related to Sherlock Holmes). She replies to tweets too (obviously that’s a huge thing to me 😂) and she even gave me book recommendations.
There you go. I’ll stop now or else I’ll keep talking here till tomorrow and that’ll be bad ’cause I still have plenty of books to read. I hope some of the authors I mentioned are familiar to you. Good luck to your book release! xx
SHERLOCK HOLMES LIFE FTW.😂 I mean, I’m a terrible detective and never pay attention to anyone, but I’m sure that won’t matter.
Ahh I’m so glad you found so many great authors this year! I also loved Caraval!! I don’t actually understand all the hate for it?! the world was so magical and freaking awesome ahhhh. And omg I’m laughing that that author dedicated a book to Benedict Cumberbatch.😂 Amazing.
I know! I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw Ben’s name on the book I was reading (and that was, like the 11th or 12th book in the series). I can’t really blame her though. I’d dedicate a book to Ben too if ever I publish one 😉
I also just read an Adam Silvera book last 2017 which is They Both Die At The End. I want to pick up History Is All You Left Me this month but I’m still not prepared to be sad again.
*whispers* do ittttt. The sadness is WORTH IT. He writes so so well right!? And who needs happiness anyway. 😭😂
I adore everything Anna-Marie McLemore touches. I’m super excited for Blanca & Roja, because it sounds amazing. Snow White and Rose Red and female Swan Princes? Please give it to me now.
Adam Silvera was new to me, this year, too! Admittedly, I only started reading his stuff because he’s cowriting the thing with Becky Albertalli and I’ll read anything Becky Albertalli ever even looks at, but I really like the way he writes.
Every single time she announces a new book my heart just about EXPLODES with appreciation for her premises. (Blanca and Roja aHHHHHH I have such need.) And her writing is so incredibly gorgeous?! Someone teach me.😂
And omg so excited for the Albertalli and Silvera book. In my head I keep saying “the Adam Albertalli” book because it’s alliterated and awesome and works.😂
I have This Monstrous Thing, too, but I haven’t read it. I will read it soon, I swear! Most of the other authors on your list are on my massive TBR list. Who knows when I’ll get around to reading them.
Once we figure out how to live forever and have more reading time, right?!😂
Now I have new authors to stalk. Great! MORE BOOKS TO FALL IN LOVE WITH!! The joy of a book cannibal ♥
Amanda Foody’s last name is Foody and legit enough to get me addicted. Food, guys, FOOD!! Also, I CAN NOT WAIT FOR ACE OF SHADES! Also, I haven’t read Daughter Of A Burning City yet… oops, BUT IT’S ON MY TBR SO HERE I COME!
I have put books coming out 2019/2020 on my TBR while I still haven’t read books that came out in the 1900s, so NO SURPRISE THERE!!!
I reread Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom again and she has become my official first favorite author.
YOU ARE MOST WELCOME. ENJOY THE BOOK EATING EXPERIENCE.😂 Daughter of the Burning City was SO good that I’m sure Ace of Shades is just going to make my life.😍😍 Come hither to me April, I HAVE NEED.
I read Nnedi Okorafor’s books for the first time in 2017. She is an amazing author…you should totally read the binti trilogy she wrote..and she recently started writing black panther comics too…
Oh oh I’ve heard of those but not read the trilogy yet! Will definitely but that on the to-do list!
Thank you for adding more books to my out of control TBR! I’ve read a few of these authors but can’t wait to read the others.
You are MOST welcome. I’m here to torture lovingly.😂
You know what I lose a lot? Index flags. I was reading in bed last night, and I lost my index flags 4 times. I don’t know how either.
Some favourite authors I discovered in 2017 were Laura Ruby, Charles Dickens and Rachel Caine! 😍
I honestly think these kind of things have legs and they just run off. I can’t keep hold of bookmarks to save my life. (RACHEL CAINE AND LAURA RUBY AHHH❤️❤️❤️)
Waitwaitwait, Top-Ten-Tuesday will be no more? That’s awful! It’s such a popular meme and I love reading all of the posts that always fill my feed every Tuesday! Hmph.
But I really love how you included the author photo along with their books. It’s so much fun to see the real face behind all those words and beautiful covers 🙂 Quite a few of these are still on my TBR, and this just makes me more excited to get to them!
Oh don’t panic! It’s switching over to another blog which is a relief. I would be devastated if it closed forever. 😂 (Aka I’d have to think of my own blog post topics and that’s a BIT MUCH.😂)
And it is nice to know authors have faces right?!😂 Also I love how innocent and kind most of them look and then it’s like — BOOM. Their books are heartbreaking monstrosities. Lovely.😂
I also read Mackenzie Lee for the first time in 2017!
I also read Laini Taylor for the first time and I can’t believe I haven’t read any of her books sooner, she’s amazing!
Great post Cait! 😊
Mackenzie Lee is a GIFT OF HILARITY AND GOODNESS.😍 And omg yesss that you found Laini Taylor! I can never get over how lush and gorgeous her writing is.
Leigh Bardugo, OBVIOUSLY. Agatha Christie and Graeme Macrae Burnet too. I also finally read an Austen novel that I didn’t hate (Persuasion), so yay for that.
LEIGH BARDUGO IS AMAZING!!😍 Also I admire you for reading (and loving classics!) I feel like an uncultured mess but I never seem to understand them. 😭
For me: VE Schwab! I only just read this author this year and burned through the Shades of Magic series. I’m convinced I’ll reading anything by this author now.
Omg you have definitely found a pure gem!!😍I’ve loved all her books and she doesn’t disappoint!
*Setting our own hair on fire* yes, it’s true. I’m ready to pull out my own fiery hair and go hide under a rock for the next 100 years. *I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative* 🤦🏼♀️
But I’m brash and loud & utterly American. *forgive me* (Though that might be more Irish than American? LET ME MOVE TO IRELAND AND ESCAPE THIS CONTINENT) Oh, I need money for that.
So, I discovered Angie Thomas – and I love THUG SO, SOOO, MUCH! 😍 So now I really need to pick up Jason Reynolds. Maybe I’ll follow your example and check out a library.
I also discoverd Mackenzie Lee and GAHAHAHA, she’s epic. I can’t wait for her 2018 releases!!!! Especially Bygone Badass Broads
And let’s see, so I got into bookstagram last January, and literally discovered the ENTIRE world. Before that I was just rereading Anne of Green Gables, foaming at the mouth over politics, and of course, watching Hornblower. 😂 *just give me a ship and let me hunt down a French frigate, RIGHT NOW*
But when I stumbled across Bookstagram, I read so MANY new authors! Sarah J Mass, Leigh Bardugo, Laini Taylor, Cassandra Clare. Ok, now I’m rambling. But I discovered everything sweet and YA & simply awesome in 2017.
Oooh can I come to Ireland with you?! I mean I have 0% roots there BUT I WANT TO SEE IRELAND!! Also Scotland. Also just all of the UK. I know it rains a lot but omg pretty. 😍 Anyway, ahem, excuse my randomness. Ahhh I’m glad you liked THUG too!! I don’t think I’ve met one person who didn’t enjoy it?! And Mackenzie Lee is a pure and hilarious gift to this world. I need Felicity’s book so so bad!!
Laini Taylor and Cassandra Clare are two of my FAVES.😍
YES! Let’s book flight to Ireland immediately. 😍
I mean, I can skip classes twice before my prof will even notice? Except my French prof…but I’ll stop by France and practice, so he’ll be fine 😂
AGH! I can’t wait for Felicity’s book!
I’m reading TMI to my freshman roommate & we’re on City of Ashes. I just can’t wait till we finish City of Glass so we can read about WIll and JEM and TESSA. 😍 But reading a chapter a day aloud is just so slow 😭
I absolutely ADORED The Gentleman’s Guide, Teeth, and History is All You Left Me. (I’ve read More Happy Than Not too and it was pretty fabulous) I definitely need to pick up They Both Die at the End! I’m just… not emotionally ready… yikes.
And basically all of these other books are on my TBR. Better hop to it! 😂😂
WE ARE BURSTING WITH AMAZING BOOKS FROM LAST YEAR HI FIVE MY FRIEND. WHAT DID WE DO TO DESERVE THIS BLESSING. 😍😍
Ooh, The Art of Feeling was put on my TBR list midyear last year. So glad to see that you liked it!!
It was ridiculously good!!
Awww ALL THE NEW AUTHORS! They look so innocent, don’t they? *squints* I don’t buy any of it. Also THE ART OF FEELING sounds really good and pretty and just ASDKJFHSD *runs to add it to TBR*
THEY DO LOOK RIDICULOUSLY INNOCENT FOR AUTHORS THAT LIKE TO SMASH OUR FEELS. 😂😂
YAY FOR NEW AUTHORS. I’ve never put a face to some of the names that I see floating around on books, so it was a little odd to see what a few of the authors actually looked like. XD
Discovering new authors is kind of the greatest (ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY’RE ON TWITTER).
Ah hahah I know right?! I especially like it when the authors are writing like these dark heavy book sand then you see they’re profile pictures and they are adorable little pockets. 😂(Shh this is totally going to be me. I look so young in my photo.😂) AHEM.
BUT NEW AUTHORS ARE GREAT.
I really started getting into the book blogging community in 2017, so I started reading a lot of YA fiction and Christian fiction and generally hyped books. Aside that, one of the authors that I found that I really love is Agatha Christie: her books are nice and short and also fun to read XD
Ayyy I’m so glad you discovered the book community last year! IT IS FUN AROUND HERE. Also people talk about Agatha Christie books all the time yet I’ve never read one?! Shame on me!
I discovered Colleen Hoover books in 2017! Her book, It Ends With Us was the first book I read after I got my wisdom teeth out over the summer. It was super good and I quickly read most of her books. I think there are only two books of her’s I haven’t read still, but I loved them so much!!!! I even went to a book signing for her new book in October. I also discovered Adam Silvera, I tried all of his books. The only one I finished was History Is All You Left Me though, I wasn’t that into his other books. I read a lot of contemporary in 2017, HAHAHAHAH! I used to hate contemporary, but Colleen Hoover has changed me! I also read the entire Laura Jean trilogy by Jenny Han, in like a week. I wish I would’ve taken my time with that one *sobs because it’s over*. Oh and Paullina Simons! She wrote the Bronze Horseman series, I fell in love with her characters! The book also takes place in Russia during the siege of Leningrad. It’s a trilogy, I’m currently reading the third book, but I feel like it could’ve just stopped after book two. Book three seems like it just a bunch of filler, but I don’t care because I love the story *internally screams forever*
Okay but first of all condolences for your wisdom teeth.😭😭 I haven’t had mine out but I know how painful it is because my brother looked like a chipmunk for WEAKS with his cheeks so swollen ughghg. ANYWAY. BACK TO BOOKS. I’m really glad you liked the Hoover books and ahhhh I’m glad you do like some of Silvera’s books too! I’m hoping I like More Happy Than Not as well so I can just descend into being a mindless fan forever.😂 Ahem.
Jenny Han is AMAZING. I need to read the second two Lara Jean books yet though.
You haven’t read All Our Yesterdays yet? I thought you had! You need to get on that. It’s one of my favourite YA books of recent years. So well written, and the characters… Well, just read it; you’ll probably wish you’d done it sooner!
I know! I know! I’m going to be kicking myself absolutely…since Daniel Tate was freaking AMAZING.
“No I’m not American but I watch you guys set your hair on fire so I like to be informed.” lol yes. Jason Reynolds is the bomb! All American Boys is one of my faves, and I’ve also read some of is middle grade books, which are good too.
Ahh I’m so glad you like his books too! And honestly your country is interesting, but from a distance.😂😂
Stop reminding me that I need to read Wild Beauty! And Autoboyography! And They Both Die at the End! And Dear Martin!
Sadly, the only one on this list that I’ve read myself is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (which I also really enjoyed), but I’ll have to get to some of these other ones soon. You have a great list!
BUT I HAVE TO KEEP FLAILING ABOUT THEM, DANI, THEY’RE SO PRETTY AHHHHH.😂
I read Long Way Down and now I desperately want to read All American Boys!
I want to read all his books basically hahah.😂
I didn’t really like more happy than not so I’m super wary of Adam Silverado now. He seems like such a cool person, but MHTN seemed to be a lot of horny teenage boys which is not my thing. Anyway. I liked this monstrous thing more than TGgTBAV but I think you’ll like it less. You should still read it though! Last year I discovered… *Forgets everything* oh yeah Emily Henry is amazing! And I want to read Jason Reynolds as well.
Ohhh that’s disappointing. I mean History had a lot of sex in it but They Both Die At The End didn’t? So if you do try him again maybe go for that one.😂
I about died when I saw you haven’t read More Happy Than Not yet. XD That book is in sooo many of your photos! I think you advertise it more than anyone else. (I still haven’t read it yet either though so maybe it’s a trend.)
It kind of slipped up on me too that The Broke and the Bookish were closing shop. I’m hoping the TTT topics remain as active on The Artsy Reader Girl.
I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHY! I confess I actually bought it 50% because I love Silvera (I’d only read History at that point though and hadn’t been blessed with the beauty that is They Both Die At The End) but also 50% because it was yellow. 😂 I KNOW. JUDGE ME. I’M ASHAMED TOO.😂 But I needed yellow books for my bookstagram haha. Ahem. Anyway THAT one is happening asap because I need.
I’m glad someone at least is continuing the TTT! I would be really lost without it.😂
I just finished Long Way Down last night, and OMG…..you must read it now! A quick but oh-so-powerful read! And…..it was my first Jason Reynolds book. I cannot even begin to explain how this has happened, but I will be working on this soon!
I want to so so baaad. 😭 I’m going to see if I can library reserve it online or something because NEED?!?
I’m currently in the middle of reading They Both Die at the End cause arghhhh my digital audiobook loan expired when I was 15 minutes from the end…. I need to know what happens so badlyyyy (though I suspect I already know what’s coming *sobs*).
OH MY GOD NO!! THAT’S LIKE PURE TORTURE!! I’M SO SORRY FOR YOU. 😭😭😭😭
Silvera warned us in the title, but AH I AM NOT READY AT ALLLL!!!
I read Not Otherwise Specified by Hannah Moskowitz back in December of 2015, loved it so much, it was the first book I ever read with a bisexual character let alone main character, and i’m bisexual and resonated so much with it I couldn’t stop crying happy tears. I have teeth as well as a few other books by her (including a history of glitter and blood) on kindle that…I still haven’t read yet. What is wrong with me? I need to fix that this year! And honestly most authors I read are new to me because I read one book by an author and even if I love it never seem to touch their stuff again even as I cry how much I want to. I need to remedy this.
Some new favorite new to me authors in 2017 would be Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde, Fortitude Smashed by Taylor Brooke, Saga by Brian K. Vuaghn, Chameleon Moon by RoAnna Sylver…just to name a few 🙂
Omg I’m so glad you found books that really resonated with you like that!! <3 That's like one of the best parts of a bookworm experience ajdfksald. Also there are far too many books to read so I totally understand not having read her others yet.😂 I'm workinggggg on it too haha.
Jen Wilde was AMAZING! I just read Queens of Geek this year too!!
I saw several of these authors at Texas Teen Book Festival! MACKENZIE LEE is hilarious!! As is Jason Reynolds!
MACKENZIE LEE IS A GIFT TO THIS WORLD AHHHHH.
Hannah Moskowitz is showing plenty of teeth in that picture.

sorry, I couldn’t help myself. XD I discovered Tui T. Sutherland, which is apparently a pen name and I feel so betrayed??? like don’t you trust us??? what is your name??? I’m so hurt. but she wrote the Wings of Fire, which she have my eternal devotion for. it’s a book series about DRAGONS. told by DRAGONS. with lots of DRAGONS and it made my heart so happy omw. (the books are tiny and its written for younger people but WHATEVER it make my heat happy and besides its a nice break from all the darkness and stress while still being so unbelievably stabby but come on they’re dragons stab is about all they can do.) *pants for breath*
here is the link to the first book: https://www.amazon.com/Wings-Fire-Book-One-Dragonet/dp/0545349230/ref=sr_1_8?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1515024016&sr=1-8&keywords=wings+of+fire+series
you NEED to read these, as well as Eragon. NOW.
Most crazily, ~Olive
Ahh ha I don’t know if you’ve read Lemony Snicket but I thought that was totally his name when I was a smol bean…and NOW I KNOW IT’S NOT AND I’VE BEEN BETRAYED.😂
But dragons! Sounds epic!
Oh my gosh, I found so many new favourites this year! I actually only discover Marissa Meyer, Victoria Schwab, and Cassandra Clare this year…! I don’t know how I managed to do that, but OH MY GOODNESS I NOW LOVE THEM SOSOSOSO MUCH!
OMG SO MANY AWESOME AUTHORS YOU DISCOVERED THIS YEAR THOUGH. WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FABULOUSNESS (and pain because Schwab and Clare like to make us suffer😂)
Oh no! I haven’t read any of these authors. I really need to check them out I suppose. I”m so glad you found some new authors to love! 😀
Too many authors and not enough time, right?! 😂 It’s a cliche BUT YET SO TRUE.
I absolutely LOVE it when I discover a new author! My top FAVORITE author I discovered this year is Marissa Meyer! As of today, I’ve read ALL of her books (Except for Renegades) and I just find her writing style SUPER easy to digest and her story ideas are BEAUTIFUL!
Ahh I’m so glad you discovered her books this year! The Lunar Chronicles is definitely some of my utter favourites!
Dude, I failed so hard with new authors this year! I think of these, the only one I read newly this year is Jason Reynolds. And the only others I have read in general are Hannah and Adam, and clearly I have a LOT of catching up to do. The worst part is, I own multiple books from almost ALL of these authors. See the fail, Cait? I do have a *few* new authors from last year. Like Laini Taylor, which is kind of a big deal. Becky Albertalli. SJ Kincaid. Brendan Reichs. But those are about the only non-debut new to me authors whose books I actually liked! OH and technically Rachel Caine!
Pfft, not a fail! It just means 2018 is full of wonderful books for you.😂😂 LAINI TAYLOR IS AMAZING THOUGH AND I’M SO GLAD YOU DISCOVERED HER!!
Ooh yes, I read Adam’s books this year for the first time too!! I actually disliked History Is All You Left Me (I’m trying to figure out what I missed…?), but More Happy Than Not absolutely DESTROYED me! 😭😍 And Adam is such an amazing person in general, I love him. 💕
Aaahhh Anna-Marie McLemore! I read all three of her books this year as well, and I’m in LOVEEE. When the Moon Was Ours has to be my favorite and The Weight of Feathers my least, actually?? Total opposites here. 😂😂 But YES the way she writes queerness and POC so casually is beautiful and I love it so much! 😍
I actually heard most people didn’t like History Is All You Left Me so you’re not alone don’t worry.😂 I’m just weirdly in love with it?! And omg I need to read More Happy BUT AM I READY FOR THE PAIN I DON’T THINK SO. I love how we’re opposite for the McLemore books though.😂 But isn’t her writing to die for?!? fjsakdadlfjd
I need to read The Art of Feeling like yesterday! Thanks, Cait for adding to my TBR once again + making my eyeballs happy because of all the beautiful photos!
YOUR EYEBALLS AND YOUR TBR ARE MOST WELCOME!!
What a lovely list of amazing authors! Allll of these authors are on my “priority” tbr (ha ha) so hopefully they’ll be authors I fall in love with very soon!!!
Yay I hope you end up liking some of them too!!
Adam Silvera will be a new-to-me author this year because I didn’t get around to reading any of his books at all, but I do have They Both Die at the End on my TBR for next month and I can’t wait to read it 😊 And I also read Teeth in 2017, but unfortunately it just wasn’t for me. Oh, and I’m definitely going to put Dear Martin on my TBR after seeing so many people praise it 😊
ooh but I hope you do squeeze some of his books into this year because they are SO GOOD (and really kind of feels punching). 😍
Hahaha, yes, while I love Christina Lauren’s other work as well, I really don’t think they are quite your cup of tea {or slice of cake?}! I haven’t read Autoboyography yet though… I need to get my hands on a copy… along with The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, The Weight of Feathers, The Art of Feeling… uh oh, I could get a little carried away!
Ahhah ah I know right? I took one look at the covers and went: well this is probably not going to work out between us.😂😂 But I’ll love Autoboyography forever!
I’ve been dying to read the Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and They Both Die at the End. I mean all of these books look amazing! So happy to see some author love, I will most definitely check out more of their novels! 🙂

GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE IS SO GOOD I CAN’T EVEN. *shouts enthusiastically for a very long time*
I have been DYING to read “History Is All You Left Me…” it’s on my list for this new year, that’s for sure!
PLEASE DO IT’S BEAUTIFUL AND PAINFUL.
whelp, this is embarrassing. i’ve literally only read one author on this list and that’s hannah moskowitz. but omg, isn’t her writing to die for? you simply MUST read Break. it will rip your heart out and stomp on it and you’ll thank her for it. it’s gorgeous. i’ve also read a history of glitter and blood and oh how that book is a weird little gem. i loved it but i also couldn’t tell you what it was about because it was weird as heck… but in a good way?? idek.
definitely plan on adding nic stone, anna-marie mclemore and mackenzie lee to ‘authors i must read in 2018’ list so thanks for that.
It is! It is! I want to read all her books now.😂 And basically I want allll the heart-stomping books of ever that sounds perfect.😂
Loved this post! Found yet more books to throw on the TBR mountain 😆
Beautiful violin too! Is it yours? Do you play?
Yes it is mine actually! I do play but not in YEARS. I probably stopped about 4 years ago.😂
So, I’ve heard of some of these but I haven’t read any of them…. o.o TO GOODREADS! Thanks for all the recommendations! My tbr list hates you.
YOUR TBR LIST IS WELCOME. I’M SO NICE.
I read Autoboyagraphy recently because of 1) How much you’ve raved about it and 2) How frequently it’s appeared in your Instagram photos, and I was not disappointed. For me, it was interesting reading about how religion intertwined with the lives of the two characters (and also, I loved how writing was such an essential part of Sebastian and Tanner’s life 😊). A lot of books you have in this post are on my TBR — I hope I get to them this year! Happy New Year and I hope you have a wonderful bookish year in 2018!
AHH THAT MAKES ME HAPPY THAT I GOT YOU TO READ IT!! Also it’s so gorgeous. My insta feed loves it.😂 But yes! I liked also how it didn’t say “the church is bad!” or anything, it was more an aspect of problematic parts. And how some people treat others well, and others let themselves be blinded. Plus Sebastian and Tanner was so freaking adorable I can’t even. <3 <3
Laura Tims is looking like the cutest human being in existance though. I have Mackenzi Lee on my list as well. I needs the next one and I do have This Monstrous Thing on my shelves still to read but I am savoring it I think… (Lets just pretend that is the reason okay and not mountain tbr).
I’m such a fan of all of them ah hahaha. And Monstrous Thing is like DEFINITELY going on the TBR for this year (says me who procrastinates books all the time 😂)
I met Adam Silvera at the beginning of last year and honestly he is such a sweet soul. I can’t wait to move out from my homophobic family so I can read his books!
Also, would you suggest Autoboyography to a queer Mormon? I’m v interested but I’m a little nervous about how it might be handled.
First off I’m REALLY sad about your family. 😭😭 I know a bit of how that feels and I guess I’m lucky that what I read is my business and my family is never going to know. But I hope you get to experience his (and tons of other lgbtqia+ author’s!!) works soon!!
So Autoboyography is ABOUT Mormons actually. I’d be curious to know what a Mormon felt of the rep. I’m unsure if either of the authors are Mormon or not? But it’s about the persecution of being queer and Mormon, although I don’t think it made the Mormon church out to be a “villain”. It more was talking about individual’s problems? If that makes sense? So it talks about good vs problematic aspects of the Mormon church. (I related a lot, not being Mormon, but having grown up in a really conservative church.☹️☹️)
and the fancy tart has resurfaced in your fancy book photos, you have to give me the recipe for that, it looks delicious 🙂
It is entirely delicious but uses a lot of like “odd/alternative” ingredients so I don’t think a recipe would be very helpful. 😂
It is slightly weird and scary that we have a lot of the same “new to me” authors this year!
Despite owning Mackenzi Lee’s first book for far too long, I have never read it. But I DID read TGGTVAV and loved it, of course. I also have Adam Silvera’s devut novel, but read his second and third books this year and love them, of course. I also read Anna Marie McLemore for the first time this year! And Amanda Foody! We are currently kind of twinning, Cait.
I can’t believe you haven’t read All Our Yesterdays????? How have you MISSED IT? It’s really, really good. Like, pretty much the best time travel book I have read. Because it is not over technical and hard to understand. Terrill explains everything REALLY WELL. And also, the characters and relationships are A+ amazing. Please read it! And let me know what you think when you do 😀
I hope we discover even more amazing authors in 2018 <3
Clearly we have like excellent taste. *hi fives* Clearly we’ve basically turned into the same person (That’s…not…freaky or weird at all I’m sure.😂)
I KNOW I’M SO ASHAMED ABOUT ALL OUR YESTERDAYS!! Although I blame most of that on the fact that my library never had it. But like seriously it needs to go on my to-buy list.😂
It’s a little crazy how some of my favorite authors now I just started reading this year. It’s also a little crazy that a lot of the people on your list I haven’t heard of before *gasp*. I will have to get on that. Thanks for sharing!!!
I’ve met *SO* many authors I freaking adore this year!! WHAT HAS MY LIFE BEEN BEFORE THIS.😍
Umm okay I just discovered Jason Reynolds too (and by that I mean All-American Boys has been on my TBR for a couple months, but I’m excited to eventually get to it). And I’m excited to check out the rest of these authors! Thanks for the list:)
Yessss I’m glad you’re going to read his books too!!
I don’t think I have read anything by the authors you mentioned 😅 But I am super looking forward to reading Dear Martin and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue 😍 Your post literally inspired me so much to talk about my fave authors in 2017 that I wrote an entire blog post in a few hours, so thanks for the inspiration 🙂
Ooh I hope you get to read both of them because OMG THEY’RE SO AMAZING. Also I’m so glad you got inspired for a post!
I just read Jason Reynolds for the first time this year too with Miles Morales.
Ooh was it good?! I really want to try Miles Morales too!
It was very good – and I didn’t even know all that much about that Spider-Man character to begin with. 🙂
wow! I’m gonna go check em out too!
I have to thank you for the efforts you’ve put in penning
this blog. I really hope to view the same high-grade blog
posts by you later on as well. In fact, your creative writing abilities has encouraged me to get my very own website now
😉
