It’s difficult being a bookworm. Do you become a casual fan of a book? Or do you let it swallow you up to your eyeballs so all you can do is read and shriek and throw the book at your friends so they can read-shriek too? DECISIONS, DECISIONS.
So, against my Vulcan soul’s natural inclinations, I’ve made a list of 10 books I basically want to eat and shriek because I love them so much. You get that feeling too, right?? See something beautiful = EAT IT. Ahem.
I also have a lot of “best of” lists coming for you (mwahah, that sounds so ominous) over the next few weeks. Because lists of books are just FABULOUS. There can be no downside. But this week I’m focusing on authors I hadn’t read until 2015 but now will read forever and ever the end.
Oh and don’t forget to enter my copious amounts of giveaways!! Ebooks and mini book necklaces (made by yours truly) and there’s also a survey for regular readers. AND CAKE. Obviously.
This Week’s Prompt: Top Ten New-To-Me Favourite Authors I Read For The First Time In 2015
1. GEORGE RR MARTIN
The appropriate question here would be to shriek “WHY DO YOU LIKE THIS AUTHOR, CAIT?! YOU ARE TERRIBLE.” Well, yes. GRRM is a horrible terrible author who murders all my favourites and is to blame for that time I melted into a puddle of nope. I’m still in that puddle. I’LL ALWAYS BE A PUDDLE.
But the world building! The characters! The humour! THE DRAGONS. (I have this thing about dragons…I love them. Kill a human = eh. Kill a dragon = I shall come after you and buuuuurn you myself.) I also read all 5 books this year on audio. One after the other. BEST decision ever.
Shrieking reviews of A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords Part 1 & A Storm of Swords Part 2, A Feast of Crows and A Dance With Dragons
2. RAE CARSON
I’m just…addicted?! Her writing is incredible. I randomly picked up A Girl of Fire And Thorns from the library because I was on a fantasy kick. OH WHAT A GENIUS DECISION. It’s one of my favourite fantasies of ever. It’s not set western medieval fantasy world (it’s possibly more Middle Eastern?) and the narrator isn’t the typical skinny warrior, and she has a rock her flesh. Like, literally. A rock. In her flesh.
And then Walk on Earth a Stranger was equally gorgeously written and made me relive my childhood-gold-rush-obsession. “What obsession, Cait?” you ask. WELL. Let’s just say I built wagons out of paddle pops sticks and actually calculated the cost, supplies and schedule to get one to the Gold Rush or Oregon. #PioneerCait Yes I am Australia. No it doesn’t make sense. IT IS WHAT IT IS.
3. BECKY ALBERTALLI
“Read Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda!” the entire internet shrieked at me. “It’s so great!” they howled.
Now I’m officially howling with them because — HECK YES IT IS GOOD. It is adorable. And the audiobook is a thing you need in your life. Plus Simon believes Oreos are their own food group and he regularly utters “I can’t even.” Which is a grand phrase. I approve.
I CAN’T EVEN EITHER, SIMON.
4. VE SCHWAB
The only reason it took me so long to read a VE Schwab book is…BLAME MY LIBRARY. They refused to buy any. (I requested…) And I wasn’t sure if I’d like it or not, so I hesitated to accost a bookstore for one myself. But the library finally bought Vicious and I probably shrieked far too enthusiastically. But it’s about supervillains, peoples. SUPER. VILLAINS. It was perfection.
I’ve since bought The Archived and scored A Darker Shade of Magic on an Amazon sale for $2. Be still my excited heart.
5. MOIRA YOUNG
HOLY CAKE POPS. Why does no one talk about this series?! It’s incredible. And the Blood Red Road came out in back in 2011 and yet I never heard people screech with love for it. It’s a dying shame. DYING. I am dying. I love it that much, okay?! It’s full of unique formatting and slang and I cried over the first book, howled during Rebel Heart and now I only have Raging Star left and I think…I think I need an olympic pool of chocolate get through this okay?
Yes it’s painful and yet I’m telling you to go read it. OBVIOUSLY. How else do you recommend books?!
6. MOIRA FOWELY-DOWELY
All the cool authors are named “Moira” okay? Okay. Just so you know.
I LOVE THE ACCIDENT SEASON. (Surprise!) It’s creepy and whimsical and odd. And magical. I love it so much I nearly choked while eating it. I will read anything this author writes. Even if she wrote the terms and conditions for something…I would read them. Even though that goes against human nature. DO YOU SEE HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS BOOK YET??
7. LAUREN RUBY
Again with the whimsical-beautifully-written-magical-fantasy-that-is-entirely-odd-but-I-love-it. Seriously, if you can only pick one book off my list: PICK BONE GAP OKAY?! It is gorgeous. And it’s about strange happenings and kidnappings and bees and honey and midnight rides and this entirely odd boy who never looks at people’s faces.
I want to hug this book for, perhaps, 900 years.
8. FRANCESCA ZAPPIA
I’ve read a conglomeration of books on schizophrenia but Made You Up wins half the universe and possibly two thirds of the planets too. Because it’s gorgeous. And it’s not ABOUT schizophrenia entirely. It’s about a person who is a person not their illness. I think that’s really important and not enough books underline this fact.
9. CINDA WILLIAMS CHIMA
If there’s one thing I learned very firmly this year is “ALWAYS LISTEN TO RECOMMENDATIONS FROM MARAIA“. We were both really disappointed with the way the Throne of Glass series started turning and she recommended I fill the ToG hole in my life with The Demon King series. Best. Advice. EVER. This series is everything. It has thieves, wizards, princesses and magic schools. And it’s funny. Like “there-is-Cait-snorting-out-loud” sort of funny. I gave the first book and The Exiled Queen both 5-stars and am swallowing the last two over the holidays.
10. STACEY JAY
Ohhhh, Princess of Thorns…where have you been all my life?!? I can’t even begin to sum up how much I adore this book. So I’ll just holler “I ADORE IT” and leave.
HAHA…kidding. Since when have I passed up a chance to gush over a new favourite?!
Humans, so this is a fairy tale retelling of Sleeping Beauty (with the Seven Swan Brothers squished in) but it’s more like a continuation? It has basically EVERYTHING I love in a book, a) humour, b) siblings rescuing each other, c) an OTP that hates each other ergo I ship them, d) copious amounts of food, I’m not even kidding the have food eating competitions and eat like a whole field of potatoes and pie, and e) magic….oh and f) JUST THE BEST CHARACTERS THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN. I adore it.
I want to eat this book I love it so much.
Oh My Gosh Rae Carson is the BEST and I adored Made You UP (I’m still too scared for George RR Martin though…. but eventually when I feel ready) Hmm, one FABULOUS author I discovered this year was Tommy Wallach and Sue Monk Kidd and they are both EXCELLENT writers. And I really need to finish that Raging star dustlands series. Also, thanks to you I ordered Bone Gap from the library. I AM EXCITE. (also: in three days times it’s holidays and I’m going to Australia then I’m going to New Zealand and I”m gonna see my family *panics happily*)
(I wouldn’t blame you for skipping GRRM. XD It’s a lot of commitment!! And sometimes they’re mind numbingly slow. *nods*) Omg I need to read Tommy Wallach!! I’ve actually requested his second book for an ARC so fingers crossed that I get approved because EVERYONE seemed to love We All Looked Up!! 😛 Zomg I hope you like Bone Gap. I AMD DYIN GWITH LOVE FOR IT BASICALLY.
Omgggg, you must be basically leaving now, right?!! SAFE TRAVELS!!
*Pulls out pen and paper* Love when you recommend books Cait, I haven’t regretted any that you have suggested. you have simply amazing taste.
Omg, REALLY?!?! *blushes* That is like the highest compliment of ever, Skye. <3
Bone Gapppppppppppp. I really really really really need to read it!! It sounds right up my alley.
AND OMG that photo of Made You Up *flails* Almost as beautiful as the cover itself <3 <3
It is so gorgeously magical and fantastic. *happy sigh* And Made You Up…aDFJALS I’M SO GLAD IT EXISTS.
I AM SO GLAD YOU LOVED SIMON! HE’S MAGICAL, IS HE NOT?
*awkward* My comment cut off… so continuing… I’m so glad you loved SImon! He’s one of my fave characters of the year. I’m so glad Bee recommend it to me!
And is it sad that I have like all of these books on my shelf and haven’t read like any of them? I’ve owned Blood Red Road since 2011 but the slang is putting me off majorly! I”m scared it is going to piss me off…. or I’ll have to read the pages like three times before I get what is is saying.
And I”m currently reading Walk on Earth a Stranger and it is GORGEOUS! I cannot wait to dive into it.
*scurries off to GR to write the rest of these books down*
Simon IS amazingly magical. :’) (And I hope it wasn’t my blogs fault your comment glitched? It probably was wasn’t it? I SHALL SIGH anD GLARE AT MY bloG ON YOUR BEHALF.) Ahem.
Omg I had the SAME thing with Blood Red Road though. I didn’t own it, but I borrowed it like twice from the library and always sent it back unread. :O Such a shame. I missed out on its fabulousness for too long. XD
Walk on Earth is so SHINY. *strokes cover*
Oh, no need to worry. I think it was more my overly-eager fingers pressing the wrong button… again.. I’m too clumsy for my own good! Oops… And yess, I really need to work on reading the books I have. I bet there’s some hidden gems in there… somewhere!
“Blood Red Road” is watching me accusingly from my TBR shelf, while I’m reading this post 😀 Seriously, I need to get to it…
You must answer to its accusatory glare, Zhana. 😉 HEHE IT’S JUST REALLY THAT DELICIOUS.
I discovered so many bootiful authors this year… *sigh* SO THIS WEEK’S PROMPT WAS REALLY HARD. But I’d have to say that my favorite was Sarah J. Maas. She just understand the fantasy genre so well, you know? And her characters are really sassy.
Can we fangirl about V.E. Schwab?! Her writing is so dark and elegant! Oh my lord, I love her SO much. 🙂 My TTT.
WE CAN FANGIRL FOREVER OVER VE SCHAWB. I don’t even know how she’s so talented. I’m torn between loving and being envious. XDXD
I discovered Rae Carson only this year too and now I am forever her fan. She rocked my YA fantasy world. Also, I discovered Heather Denetrios and her I’ll Meet You There and Something Real rocked my YA contemporary world 🙂
Ahhh I really want to read something by Heather Denetrios! I only hear good things about her books. XD
OMG, I just finished Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda like TEN MINUTES AGO and I am crazy in love with it and the author. I still can’t stop grinning from the adorableness. I can’t believe I missed Francesca Zappia when I made my list. Made You Up was hella amazing!! So many other books on here are on my TBR list. I need to read VE Schwab soon. I have heard such great things. Great list!
AFJDKLAS ISN’T THE MOST ADORABLE THING TO EVER GRACE THE UNIVERSE?! *flails and then dies a little with love* And VE Schwab is totally worth devouring. I mena, her books. Not the author. Cannibalism can be awkward. *nods sagely*
OMG I just finished Simon a couple days ago and I absolutely loved it and I can’t believe I forgot to put Becky Albertalli on my list!
I also loved The Accident Season and I really want to read Bone Gap after seeing your review a little while ago.
I also need to get my hands on something by Rae Carson and Stacey Jay too. I just know that I’m going to enjoy their stories.
And I’ve just now noticed I’ve intro’d my comment the exact same way as Cynthia xD
It just means you and Cynthia have GRAND MINDS THAT THINK ALIKE. XD
Simon is eeeeverything, right?!! I was just blow away by how realistic and cute and adorable it was. ADORABLE THO. And also so much food love. I love food so I love books that love food. <3
YOU NEED BONE GAP. EVERYONE NEEDS BONE GAP. I SHALL SHRIEK ABOUT BONE GAP FOREVER.
Becky is definitely an author I discovered this year and I CAN’T EVEN EITHER CAIT. But most of these were new to me. Rae Carson and Cinda Williams Chima I knew already but I hadn’t read anything from them yet. Still haven’t read a Rae Carson book. THE SHAME! But I put Walk on Earth a Stranger on my TBR for January for the Clean Slate Read-a-Thon.
NO ONE CAN EVEN AFTER THAT BOOK. SIMON IS JUST THAT GOOD. And you clearly have epic book taste, Bieke. 😉 Rae Carson is AMAZING though!! Like I hadn’t even really heard of her until this year and now I just want to gobble everything she writes of EVER.
1. And there still are not enough dragons in this book 😀
2. YES YES YES YES. I love her.
4. This also pleases me.
9. Next year will be the year I’m going to read my first Cinda book.
There will NEVER be enough dragons in ANY book (but tbh A Dance With Dragons really has like the least amount of dragons of any of his books. xD) SQUEEE! I can’t wait to know what you think of Chima’s books!!
My list is shorter this week and thank God for that heheh 😀 I’m with you on GRRM even though I’ve only read the first 2 books so far heh 😉 I almost expected to see Stiefvater on your list but then I remembering you’ve talking about her longer. I want to add some of this books to my TBR but that thing is big enough as it is. *le sigh*
Happy reading girl!
yES I’ve read Stiefvater for like..3 years now? Maybe 4? Although I did reread two of her books this year just not for the first time. xD hehe. They’ll be on next week’s list. TBRS ARE BORN TO BE UNMANAGEABLE.
Easy question, Cait. OF COURSE you let it swallow you up to your eyeballs. Is there any other way to live?!?!
Oh Cait – your photos give me photo envy. Your Walk on Earth a Stranger photo had me drooling on my laptop. Excuse me while I mop up my keyboard…
I just read V.E. Schwab this year too! But it wasn’t ‘Vicious’ (which I still need to read!) It was ‘A Darker Shade of Magic’ OOOOOH, it’s good. Just wait til you read it!
Francesca Zappia is officially on my ‘immediately-add-this-author-to-my-tbr-for life’ list. I LOVED ‘MADE YOU UP’ SO GOSH DARN MUCH. It was also the BEST gift ever – it was released on my birthday XD
Some other first-time authors for me this year were Sarah J Maas (!!!!!) and Michelle Hodkin (because MARA DYER, Cait, MARA DYER!) ohh ohhh, and Marcus Sedgwick aaaaand Ann Aguirre! I believe you have definitely convinced me to bump up ‘Simon vs. The Homosapiens Agenda’ on my TBR. Because OREOS. I can’t even.
There is NO other way to live except being covered in books. *nods emphatically*
Eeeep. I’m glad you liked my photos. And Walk on Earth a Stranger is THE prettiest cover ever and I JUST WANT TO HUG IT FOREVER. IT’s so shiny. I love shiny. This is like reason #9839 why I’m a dragon ERMAGERD. SHINY.
I actually need to read A Darker Shade before the end of the year. BUT IT’S NEARLY THE END OF THE YEAR AND I NEED MORE TIIIIIME.
I LOVE MARA DYER TOO. I just finished it and I freaking love it. I reserved the second book from the library like STRAIGHT away. *happy flails* Marcus Sedgewick is like a GENIUS.
Rae Carson, V.E. Schwab and I need to become friends in 2016 – Too long without them in my life. Seeing you read all the GoT books on audio this year, makes me want to do a re-read of the whole series that way, right NOW even though I’ve sworn I won’t re-read until George has published the final book. Looks like it was a very good year! Hope 2016 has more awesome authors in store for you!
Do the reread when the Winds of Winter at least has a release date. XD HAHA. AHEM. I want to cry because I need that book so bad. ZOMG WHY DO I NOT HAVE IT, STEPHANIE. WHY IS LIFE SO UNFAIR/?? *collapses*
I have NOT read any of these books. I really should, apparently. I really really should. Maybe I should just try to read them and stop wasting time commenting? This year, I discovered some good authors…. who have flown out of my forgetful munchkin head (I like this phrase, okay?) I will… tell you some other time when I’m not busy forgetting all the important things. 😀
yES YOU SHOULD, SHAR. *grins evilly* Alallll of them. Ahem. But don’t worry, I totally get forgetting. XD I DO THAT ALL THE TIME.
I think reading Martin all in one go is the way to go, even if it does eat up your life. there’s just so much going on, so many little things to remember. That meal they had in Braavos or that little rumor comes back 2 books later and means something- how does he keep it all straight? Oh yeah that’s why the wait between books LOL. Seriosuly though imagine what the Internet will be like when The Winds of Winter is finally announced. 🙂
Oh oh I agree!! And it’s handy just to keep the flow and not forget anything. xD And the audios actually helped me remember SO MANY DETAILS. *nods* I wonder if he has this massive encyclopedia or something to keep it all straight. XD I neeeeed the next book. But then if it’s not the finale, the pain is just going to continue. XD
The Accident Season rocked my socks! Such a kook yand quirky book and the writing? I have writers envy.. ha ha!
YES ME TOO. Such envy. XD I can’t even understand how she made words so so beautiful. #goals
Okay, so I haven’t read ANY of these – I should run to the bookshop/library immediately, right?! 😀 I definitely hope to read The Demon King series asap – it sounds like something I’d LOVE!! I hope you enjoy the next two books!! I’d also like to read V.E Schwab’s books 😀 P.s – your photography is beaut!! 🙂
SHAAAAME ON THEE. heeh. Just kidding. *gives you cake* But I truly think if you like fantasy and magic then The Demon King series will be your ONE TRUE LOVE.
AWww, thanks!! I’m so glad you like my photos! *blushes*
Ah I am a terrible book worm! I havens read any of these! Must get to them asap. They sound amazing.
Right now I’m reading The Roar by Emma Claton. My friend lent it and it’s okay but dragging a little. I just started Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douhlas, and even though I usually hate autobiographies I’m really enjoying this one. I’m also about half way through Congo by Michael Crichton. He’s an amazing author but I’m not used to his style so it’s taking awhile. After this I want to read Jarassic Park. So those are all new authors is 2015.
And can you get this Cait, you are going to want to shove the books down my throat and make me eat them when you hear this. I have never read Harry Potter. I know I’m a terrible person. The box set is on my Christmas list. *crosses fingers*. I have to get it.
Pfft, you are not terrible!! There are SO many authors to devour, right?!?! XD And we’re equal because I haven’t read any of the ones you listed right here. hehe. I didn’t even realist Jarassic park was a book. WHERE HAVE I BEEN LIVING? UNDER A DINASAUR-LESS ROCK APPARENTLY.
(I have only read the first 6 Harry Potter books. xD I only started last year, hehe, so we can be monstrously behind on them together. 😉
This year I discovered Jaye L. Knight and Tricia Mingerink. ILOVEBOTHOFTHEMANDWANTTOEATALLOFTHEIRBOOKSUP!!
Ahem. I loved The Seven Realms series!! Though, I’ve, uh, only read the first two…
I LOVE ALL THE BOOKS AND JUST WANT TO EAT THEM AND CAN’T EVEN STOP I THINK IT’S AN ADDICTION AND I’M NOT EVEN SAD. hehhhh.
I only read the first two Seven Realms books too. 😉 Soooo far.
I love your pictures!!! I haven’t read any of your new-to-you authors, but I really really want to read Made You Up and The Accident Season. Great list 🙂
Eeeep! Thanks, Michelle!! 😀 And Made You Up and the Accident Season are PHENOMENAL SO YES YES READDDD THEM.
A lot of people seem to have Made You Up on their lists. Glad to hear it is good!
OOooh, that is excellent new. XD I think Made You Up deserves the praise FOR SURE.
lmao re: GRRM! Oh man, hopefully I’ll get around to V.E. Schwab’s books next year, I heard so many good things about her books 🙂 Great list!
My TTT
She is so worth reading!! I PROMISE.
I just read The Game of Thrones series for the first time this year as well! I’m only through book 3 though. I love the world-building and Tyrion Lannister is just the best. I’ve hears nothing but good things about Simon vs. The Homo sapiens Agenda so I clearly need to get on that. Thanks for sharing! – Alyson
TYRION IS MY FAVOURITE. Well. And Jon. And I actually really like Jaime??!!? But I feel bad because he’s bad. BuT EVERYONE IS BAD. XD
Soooo I actually haven’t read ANY of these authors yet **cowers in fear:** BUT I’ve definitely been meaning to read quite a few of them! I even have the first Game of Thrones book from audible! You’ve definitely inspired me to give the audiobook versions a try, I hadn’t realized that you read FIVE of them this year!! (cake for you!)
DO NOT COWER!! I shall not come after you with a pick axe. *gently stows axe under bed* Ahhh, but that is an excellent GoT decision!! I feel like the audio makes it MUCH easier to follow. *nods* hehe, yes! I just went through one right after the other. 😛
“See something beautiful = EAT IT.” < THIS PHILOSOPHY THO. *approves* “(I have this thing about dragons…I love them. Kill a human = eh. Kill a dragon = I shall come after you and buuuuurn you myself.)” < AHHAHAA DUDE. I feel ya though…dragons are just amazing how could anyone hurt them? *coddles all the dragons*
“#PioneerCait Yes I am Australia. No it doesn’t make sense. IT IS WHAT IT IS.” AHAHA ALL I CAN DO TODAY IS QUOTE THIS POST BECAUSE YOU ARE CRACKING ME UUUPPP. This is amazing I love it. xD “I love it so much I nearly choked while eating it.” < THIS THO. oh my word. The Accident Season does look yummy…the cover is really intriguing. And whether it’s good or bad (idk) I JUDGE BOOKS BY THEIR COVERS. ALL THE TIME. xD
YOUR PICTURE OF MADE YOU UP IS SO PRETTY. I think I already said this on Instagram, but I could like, look at this picture forever. YOUR STYLING IS SO BEAUTIFUL. LIKE HOW DO YOU DO IT. (yep that wasn’t even a question because I know there is no reasonable explanation you’re just awesome.)
So I don’t think I find authors. HEH. But now I want to read some of these books because YOU SHRIEK SO LOUDLY HOW CAN I NOT LISTEN?? It works, it really does. xD Awesome post, as always! ♥
love,
abbiee
I have NO IDEA why people love to write about dragon murders. IT PAINS MY DELICATE HEART. *collapses delicately to prove point*
It makes me insanely pleased that you liked it so much. XD AND yuS YOU NEED THE ACCIDENT SEASON. It calls to you, Abbiee…caaaaalls. (Or maybe that’s just me in the distance shrieking how good it is. WHO CAN KNOW.)
I cheat and post photos on here and on instagram. hehe. BUT iDEK I JUST LOOK AT A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S PHOTOS AND TRY AND GET INSPIRATION FROM THEM. I really have like 2% of a clue what I’m doing.
My shrieking skills are working then. :’)
I’ve heard good things about Simon v. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, however I have yet to read. Not by choice but simply because I have it on hold at the library. I love Rae Carson. I haven’t read Walk on Earth a Stranger but I did read her other book and I really enjoyed it. Man! I’m going to have to get with the program. After, reading Vendetta by Catherine Doyle I am completely into her and that series. I have also discovered Jenn Marie Thorne and seriously where has she been all my life. I loved The Wrong Side of Right and I am already looking forward to her next book.
I totally understand! That was me for like most of this year…my library didn’t have it and then I got my hands on an audio at another library and had to wait for 294280 to listen to it before me. xDXD IT WAS WROTH THE WAIT THOUGH. I haven’t read those last two authors you mentioned so ooooff I go to look them up. xD
Wooowiee, that’s a lot of books, I need to add them to my tbr right now!!! I do have 2 books from this list but that’s it!! SO HORRIFYING! I KNOW… But I WILL change that. Definitely! One day. *SIGHS* I wish I was a multi billionaire, I would have buyed the whole Amazon then. 😛
So..there’s a lot of authors I discovered this year, to name a few, there’s Marissa Meyer, Rainbow Rowell, Laini Taylor, Kerr-Ann Dempster, Wendy Higgins, Dawn Brazil.
Great list Cait!
yES. I want to be a billionaire too. If I was a billionaire…so. many. books. My HOUSE WOULD BE MADE OF BOOKS. :’) I’m so glad you discovered Marissa Meyer this year!! *flails*
ACK, I HAVE NOT READ ANYTHING ON THAT LIST AND WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE. Okay, I take that back, I’ve read one-and-a-half G.R.R. Martin books, but that does not count and I NEED ALL THESE BOOKS. *sobs* I know I’m getting at least one bookstore gift card this Christmas, so I will keep all these lovelies in mind for when I go shopping, but WHY DO THERE HAVE TO BE SO MANY OPTIONS, CAIT, TELL ME OR I WILL KIDNAP YOUR DRAGON.
These year has actually been a really good year for reading new authors because I’ve finally had enough cash flow to buy books like crazy, and in my world, that’s usually the only way to get ahold of books (although, on the plus side, since I moved I am now near a nice library with a bunch of audiobook selections and way more books than my old one so maybe I should check that out at some point when I’m not so crazy busy). I discovered Nova Ren Suma (YOU NEED TO READ IMAGINARY GIRLS, CAIT, WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOT READING IT), Hugh Howey, Lauren Oliver, Patrick Ness, Marissa Meyer, Carolyn Adams (who shared my review of her book on her Facebook page EEP), Sarah J. Maas, G.R.R. Martin, and about nine bazillion others, so this has been a marvelous year for books, and I hope next year is even more marvelous.
YES YOU DO NEED ALL THESE BOOKS, LIZ. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE? WRITING? *snorts* Only a few words, you really have no exuse.
Zomg, I don’t know why they are so many options. 2016 is only going to make it worse though. LEAVE MY DARLING DRAGON OUT OF THIS. THIS IS BETWEEN YOU AND I NOW. *nods* And the publishers. I think we should set dragons on them until they give us all the books we need for free. #ExcellentEvilPlan
Omg, yay for a nice audiobook selection too!! I do need to read Imaginary Girls *nods* It’s on my goodreads wishlist if that helps. HEHHHH. THERE ARE TOO MANY BOOKS. HAlP.
I just recently read The Demon King!!! I love Han! This year I found and read all the books by Tricia Mingerink and Jaye L. Knight. They have some of the best fantasy books in the world!!! Then I read some steampunk for the first time with The Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. It was absolutely amazing and funny! Then I just read The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks and now I want to read everything by him!
Han is just incredible, right?!! I love how he’s dorky and sassy and seriously clever at the same time. XD I haven’t really had much luck with steampunk before so maybe I should try the Leviathan books?!? XD
YES!!! They were SOOO awesome! The two main characters were absolutely adorable and hilarious!
Wow, you have a lot of authors on your list I’ve never heard of.
I’ve been meaning to GOT but instead I watched the TV series (or part of it). I wonder how the books compare to the show. I’m guessing the books are better.
My TTT – http://wp.me/p4uAPW-295
I think the books are better. XD haha. They’re actually SUPER different…which is weird?! But I guess the books are soooo long they have to condense a ton of stuff just to make a show work.
I read about a third of A Game of Thrones before I put it down. It was good, but the first season of the TV show follows the book so closely that I felt like I wasn’t getting anything new out of reading the book. I’ll get to A Song of Ice and Fire one day, but it’s not an urgent priority because, damn, those books are giant and the TV show is diverging from the books anyway.
I’ve read Rae Carson’s Girl of Fire and Thorns and liked it. I meant to get to Walk on Earth a Stranger but didn’t get around to it, eep.
Simon! SIMON WAS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE.
I’ve read A Darker Shade of Magic and loved it, it was definitely a favorite of book of mine I read this year. I read The Archived but wasn’t a huge fan, but I’m very willing and curious to try it again seeing as how I’m now a Victoria Schwab fan.
I’ve always meant to get around to Cinda Williams Chima’s books but haven’t. Gah — 2016, I tell you! I will prioritize!
Yes the first season and first book are SUPER similar. But after that…meh, they diverge a lot. While I like both, I feel strongly that the book is better. XD Just because they’ve started killing off people in the show who didn’t even die in the books and I’m like “WHAHHHH. So many people die why are they killing more?!?!” I really have no idea who they’ll have left to keep the show afloat. 0_0 (Although I will watch the show forever just for the actor who plays Queen Magery because SHE IS EPIC.)
I hope 2016 will be your Chima year then. 😉 hehe. I CAN’T BELIEVE I’D NEVER HEARD OF HER BOOKS UNTIL THIS YEAR!!
Ooo, you’ve read Simon? That book was adorable and I adore it. I’m going to buy myself a hard copy once Christmas is over because I want to reread it forever.
Also YES to Moira Fowley-Doyle and YES to Laura Ruby. Their books have barely even come out and I’m already aching for more from them.
ME TOOOOO. I have a hardcopy on my wishlist because I’m 94% sure I need it in my life. *sniffles happily* And yes yes!! I’m so glad you liked Ruby and Fowley-Dowley because AFJDSAL HOW ARE THEY SO BEAUTIFUL WITH WORDS?!?! I need that talent.
I have heard The Game of Thrones books are amazing! I haven’t watched the TV show either but I know people are always worried about who GRRM will kill next!
GRRM is absolutely NOT a fan of keeping the heroes alive. *collapses in agony* XD But I feel like it makes for a more realistic read knowing no one is safe?!? 😛
Becky Albertalli made your list, YAY. And Victoria Schwab. And Cinda Williams Chima (that name is so unfortunate). Moïra Fowley-Dowely, Francesca Zappa, and of course Becky Albertalli are on my list as well. I would also add Chuck Wendig, Sebastian Fitzek, Glenda Larke, Peter Clines, Daniel Price, and, SHOCKINGLY, Stephen King (but only when on audiobook, read by my favorite German narrator).
BEST COMPLIMENT EVER. <3
OF COURSE SHE DID. I love it when books leave you feeling really happy and goodness knows I don’t read very many happy books. XD I haven’t tried Stephan King yet because, erk, his book = huge = Cait feels scared. (Shhh, I know I read Game of Thrones. Irregular occurrence. IRREGULAR.)
YOU DESERVE IT YOU WONDERFUL BEAN. <33
The only reason I’m reading Stephen King is because of the amazing German narrator. I don’t know if the English narrator is the same for all his books, but I started Mr. Mercedes in English, and it hurt my ears. I couldn’t listen. So…learn German? Otherwise I think you can pass. 😛
Every time you talk about The Accident Season I get more curious. o.o *flails* I may have to try that one. Bone Gap sounds intriguing–why have I not heard of it?? :O Hmm, the Chima books and Princess of Thorns sound interesting as well… I think you had me at “fantasy” with “humor”. XD I’m… kinda convinced. *goes to look at things on Goodreads*
To answer your question: basically EMMA CLIFTON!!! I’M A WILD FAN. But my list would beeeee:
Emma Clifton (Broken Glass in Five Glass Slippers, Corroded Thorns)
M. M. Kaye (The Ordinary Princess)
Deborah Dunlevy (The Book of Sight series)
Jenelle Schmidt (Stone Curse in Five Enchanted Roses)
Ally Carter (Heist Society Trilogy)
Jennifer Freitag (Plenilune)
Leigh Bardugo (Six of Crows)
Derek Landy (Skulduggery Pleasant #1) YES I FINALLY READ ONE AND I LOVE IIIIT.
Juliet Marillier (Wildwood Dancing)
L.A. Kelly (Tahn)
I CAN’T WAIT FOR MORE LISTS OF FAVORITES FROM YOU CAIT! ^_^ Books + Lists = Love of my life. (Which is why I’m getting very tempted to start up that blog-entirely-for-books that I’m working on, just so I can have an excuse to do Top Ten Tuesdays all the time. XD)
Awk, have I not flailed about the Bone Gap here enough? OKAY THAT MUST CHANGE. I really need to review it or something because so. much. love. XD *hugs everything about that book*
AHHHH I’M SO GLAD TO SEE DEREK LANDY ON YOUR LIST. XD And of course Ally Carter and Leigh Bardugo. XD I don’t know any of the others (although, I mean, I know Emma Clifton and Jennifer Freitag from their blogs :P)
Omg thank you *blushes* I’m so glad you like my lists. LISTS ARE MY EVERYTHING BASICALLY. Omg you’re starting another blog. *hyperventilates* That sounds exciting!!
HELL YES SCHWAB!!! I only actually read her for the first time last year, but 2015 has been dedicated (in part) to me playing catch up of all her other works…I’m not quite done yet, but I’ve read Vicious (that was my first one too OMG IT’S SO GOOD) The Archived AND A Darker Shade of Magic and loved them ALL! I hope you will too 😀
I actually still need to read Martin, Carson Young and Chima, but at least I own books from the last three there <– so I WILL get to them! Super psyched to see that they made you list here^^ which is awesome ♥
I think 2016 will be me playing catch up on all her delicious books. XD And doesn’t she have TWO coming out next year?! AFJDKLS I love it when a new favourite author writes TONS. IT IS SO SO GLORIOUS.
I am so happy to find someone else who loved Princess of Thorns. Most people didn’t like it, it seems, because how it’s not really that much of a retelling of Sleeping Beauty. But I thought it was a fantastic standalone. (Even though I would’ve liked more because I loved the characters and the world so much)
My TTT: Marie @ Pages to Explore
Omg, I cannot BELIEVE people didn’t like it?!?!?! It was sooo incredible and I loved how it continued the story and ADORED the world building. afjdkslad I could read so so many books in that series. I WISH SHE’D WRITTEN MORE.
Me too, I want to know more. Know what happened with all the characters, and their fate.
V.E./Victoria Schwab is on my list as well. And I would like to say: THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME WANT TO READ MAGGIE STIEFVATER. I am about 70% through TRB and am praying that my library will have TDT available soon! Also, super excited to try Princess of Thorns and EVERYTHING Rae Carson in 2016!
-Monica @ Tomes Project
AFJDSAKLD YOU ARE SO WELCOME AND THAT BASICALLY IS THE BEST NEWS TO HEAR OF EVER. *happy dnace*
I can’t say as I recall reading any of the authors on your Top Ten Tuesday post this week, so I have some new to me authors to check out for sure.
Eeeep! I hope you like them if you end up trying them. xD
Simon! The Accident Season! Cinda Williams Chima! Victoria Schwab! An utterly fabulous list you have here. <3
THANK YOU. XD It has been a year of screechingly GRAND books.
Omg there are so many books I’ve overlooked here that I need to read! Rae Carson, Stacey Jay and Moira Young, I should read some of the books on my backlist because it looks like I’m missing out. Great recs Cait!
yESSS YOU ARE MISSING OUT WITHOUT THEM IN YOUR LIFE. Moira Young is just…afjdklsad I wish I’d discovered her books sooner. XD
oooo I’m definitely going to have to check out these authors! I do trust your recommendations! Of course I have a whole pile of books in my TBR so I’m not sure when exactly I’m going to be able to consume some books by these authors!
Awww, I’m glad you like my recs. MWAHAHAH. THE POWER. *ahem* *calms self* Our TBRs are destined to fall on our heads and flatten us, though, right?! XD
I’m so terrible, the only author I’ve read books of is GRRM. And I wasn’t really a fan of the sequels either. I loved the first one, but only made it through the sequel by forcing myself to finish it already 😀
You aren’t terrible!! 😛 THERE ARE TOO MANY AUTHORS TO READ, RIGHT!? A Clash of Kings is monstrously slow. *sad face* But book 3 is just about my favourite thing of the universe. XD
I can so relate to going after people because they hurt animals -dragons and dogs! Why hurt those poor poor creatures? Why?
I love Schwab as well, she is fantastic. And Vicious. That book! I kind of love that there is apparently a second book coming out and at the same time i am so unsure of where she can take the story and not ruin this fantasticness of this book by trying to write a second book.
Great list 🙂
I know right?! LEAVE THE LITTLE ANIMALS ALOOOOOONE. *hugs all the dogs and dragons and things of ever*
I did hear about the Vicious sequel!! I’m excited. XD But yes, I agree…I do wonder where it’ll go, because the first one felt really complete on it’s own…
Most recent for me, Sarah Fine, she has several books but I just read The Impostor Queen and am wondering where she has been all my life, her writing is AMAZING.
VE SCHWAB humm,.. I have a book, I think I will need to try it now.
Omg I read your review on that and it made me want the book SO SO MUCH. XD So thanks for that. My TBR
growlsthanks you. 😉MARISSA MEYER!
I read the lunar chronicles this year, and MAN OH MAN.
I can’t. I can’t.
*flails*
I also just started a generic blog about reading and writing. By the way. if anyone cares.
MARISSA MEYER IS SO MUCH AWESOME. Have you read Winter?! Gah, I’m like 50% through and loving it SO SO MUCH.
Good luck with starting your new (generic) book blog!! Hope you have a blast with it. 😀
I am on a HARDCORE fantasy kick so I NEED to read anything by Chima! And I’m so happy that you read and loved Rae Carson. I need to meet her and tell her who she has made my life so much better!
Yessss for fantasy kicks!! I’ve been really digging into fantasy this year and I JUST WANT TO READ MORE AND MORE. XD
I can’t believe I haven’t read ANY OF THESE BOOKS. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?? Yeah, adding to my TBR list now.
YES CELIA. WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE. XD
Stacey’s books look and sound good. Add in the fact that I’m a fairytale addict and I really should try her novels. Soon-ish. 😉
yES YOU SHOULD. It’s beautifully glorious.
AHH. SO MANY FABULOUS AUTHORS. I absolutely love Becky Albertalli and Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda was absolutely adorable. ♥
And I may not have been a huge fan of Rae’s The Girl of Fire and Thorns, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good Walk on Earth a Stranger was.
And ahh. Moria Young is amazing too! I read the Blood Read Road series when I heard how much you loved it, and I was not disappointed. xD Still waiting to see what you think of the third book when you get to it!
And Made You Up was so incredible. I love how it portrayed mental illness so realistically and respectfully. Yeah for diversity! Thanks for sharing Cait and, as always, fabulous choices! ♥
Why am I not surprised you liked Simon Vs too? 😉 BAHHAH WE ARE GREAT, ZOE. Zomg I can’t believe you overtook me with the Blood Red Road series though. SNEAKY. xDDX I’ve heard a ton of negative stuff about this last book, though!? But I love Saba so much soooo…I really really hope I like this one.
MOIRA YOUNG! I love that series. My goodness it’s delicious. Apart from book three. I still just don’t get what happened.
Apart from her, I actually haven’t read ANY of these authors, but I do have Made You Up and The Demon King series on my list to read over Christmas. Kynndra loved that one too and flailed over it as well. I shall try eating a few of these soon, hopefully they’re as delicious as what you’ve found them to be. Nom nom <3
OMG DON’T SCARE ME ABOUT BOOK 3. I’m a little nervous to read it as is, hehe. Just so long as my ship sails….*aggressively nicely smacks Saba and Jack’s heads together*
Listen to Kynndra! LISTEN TO ME. Both of us together shall convince you to don the Demon King crown, Kelly. Just do it.
I am now a diehard Intisar Khanani fan. She is an independent author who writes short but nearly perfect fantasy that is effortlessly diverse and addictive. READ IT (https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/5780445.Intisar_Khanani)
I also really enjoyed Walk on Earth a Stranger 🙂
Wolf by Wolf by Ryan Graudin was another book that I loved to pieces. And my Vulcan heart might be even stingier than yours!
Ooh, I have not heard of this author yet *trundles off to goodreads to check it out* And I’ve heard AMAZING things about Wolf by Wolf and it’s definitely on the need-in-my-life list. xD
LOOOOVED Simon. I still need to read Made You Up…and lots more!
SIMON WAS EVERYTHING!! I’m so glad I read it!! The hype = 100% spot on. XD
I love when we share bits of list. VE Schwab, Rae Carson.. I approve. Actually, I approve of them all, but those just happen to be ones on my list too. I would have added Moira Fowley-Doyle and Francesca Zappia because they’re amazing, BUT I tried not to do debuts because my list would NEVER. END.
And PLEASE read Raging Star (pretty please?) because I don’t remember why I didn’t love it. At first I thought maybe I just hadn’t been reviewing stuff yet? But no, it was actually one of my early reviews (and it shows!) but I still don’t remember it at all. So if you liked it, then I can re-read it! And if you don’t… then we can both try to pretend it never happened? I didn’t hate it though (says my crappy review.)
I REALLY need to read Princess of Thorns and Simon Vs. I have PoT on my Christmas list, and Simon on my bookshelf 😀
P.S.- The fact that we are both so enamored with the Oregon Trail/Gold Rush shows how fabulous we really are. Just saying.
LISTS ARE THE BEST. Life should be lists. THAT IS ALL. *nods* There basically wasn’t enough room for all the authors of epicness, right?!?! 😛 And I’m going to read Raging Star soon JUST FOR YOU. I promise. And I might do a full series review here…or otherwise, I’ll just review it on Goodreads and poke you if I love it or hate it. hehe. I kind of have high expectations though. Although still super made at Saba for her decision regarding A Certain Bad Guy at the end of book 2. >_>
We just are attracted to gold, Shannon. CLEARLY WE HAVE OUR PRIORITIES IN ORDER.
CAIT! I can tell your excitement and love over these authors, it’s so tangible! And I have yet to read I think most of these authors but I am trusting your judgement and putting them on high priority to discover next year (or maybe immediately). I have read the first book in A Song of Ice and Fire: Game of Thrones and I actually really loved it for all the reasons you mentioned!
Oh and just a little comment… You spelt Moira’s name wrong and the author underneath also! Just to let you know 💓
Lovely post as always and you have me almost jumping in excitement to discover these authors!
Awww, I HAVE DONE MY WORK WELL HERE THEN. XD hehe Awk!! I’m kind of honoured you trust my judgement so much. 😉 And omg ASOIAF gets so so addictive, right?! I’m so sad they’re all finished with the last book nowhere in sight. *cries for self*
(Oh and *Whispers* I checked the Moira’s spellings? And…they’re the same as the book covers?)
There is something unnatural going on with your thumb in picture number three 😱
I think the word you’re after is: FABULOUS. My thumb is FABULOUS.
AHHHHHH I’M STILL SO HAPPY YOU READ ASOIAF THIS YEAR. EVEN IF IT MADE YOU CRY. OR IF I MADE YOU CRY BECAUSE I TOLD YOU TO READ IT. 😛
I neeed to read Cinda Williams Chima’s books!! Like ASAP!
YOU ARE JUST HAPPY TO BE THE CAUSE OF MY PAIN OMG. YOU’RE AS BAD AS GRRM. But yes, 100% blame goes to you or I’d never have started them. 😛
I CAN”T KEEP UP WITH YOU! 😀 lol So many books and so many authors! You lucky lucky girl. 😀
*piles books on your head* XDXD THERE ARE TOO MANY DELICIOUS BOOKS IN THE UNIVERSE. I CAN’T SLOW DOWN.
YES, YES, YES, YES TO GEORGE RR MARTIN! I adore his books so much, even though his books smash my heart into many, many pieces. I need to read more VE Schwab, too. I read A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC this year and loved the heck out of it.
But somehow smashing one’s heart to pieces is a good career choice. :’) YAY GRRM BUT I HATE HIM SOMEHOW EVEN THOUGH I LOVE THE BOOKS. PAIN, KARA, PAAAAIN.
Two authors I read for the first time this year are Melina Marchetta and Richelle Mead.
I read all the VA/Bloodlines books in the space of 2 months. I’ve still only read the one Marchetta, but I’ll get there.
Melina Marchetta is AMAAAAZING!! I love her books and really need to read more of them tbh. Did you read Finnikin?! IF you like epic fantasy, it’s the epicess of epicness. XD
No, I read On the Jellicoe Road. I love epic fantasy though, so I’ll look it up.
I had actually read the first book in Carson’s other series (I CANNOT REMEMBER WHAT ITS CALLED, OKAY?) before picking up Walk on Earth a Stranger but DNFed. it. So glad I picked up Walk on Earth a Stranger though because it is a MARVELLOUS book and a favorite of the year. I LOVE IT SO MUCH, CAIT.
Becky Albertalli is also a new author to me (for obvious reasons) and Simon is also a favorite of the year 😉
YAY FOR CINDA WILLIAMS CHIMA.. I’ve read The Demon King and The Exiled Queen and loved both the books. Still need to read the last two books but I am scared. One of my IRL friends LOVES this series and she may or may not have accidentally let a spoiler slip…, and IDK if my body can handle the emotions. Oops?
Fantastic list, Cait <3 I am glad you found so many amazing authors in 2015.
I’m glad you loved Walk on Earth but omgggg you didn’t like The Girl of Fire and Thorns? I CRY, RASHIKA. I CRY. *composes self* But I shall forgive you because we have mutal love for Chima and Abertalli. Like seriously how was Simon Vs the Homo Sapien’s Agenda just so freaking ADORABLE?!?! I was a smush of happiness.
Omg noooo to spoilers. NOOOOOO. I planned to read the last 2 books over the Christmas holidays. But MAYBE they’ll happen next year if I take a reading break. I’m still monstrously excited. *flails*
You are making me soooo curious about Stacey Jay’s book!
YOU GOTTA, NIKKI. It is just my new book that is everything. *hugs it*
VE Schwab and Becky Albertalli made my list too. I’m also excited to read Bone Gap and Walk on Earth a Stranger. They’re both sitting on my TBR shelf right now.
YAYYYY for your clearly awesome upcoming TBR. XD
I definitely want to read The Accident Season! My TTT
DO NOT DELAY, CARRIE! DO IIIIIT.
*takes notes so fast, the handwriting becomes an indecipherable scribble of WHAT*
Okay. MAGGIE STIEFVATER (always only in caps) is my faaaavorite author ever, and I LOVE The Lunar Chronicles (Scarlet is my snarky baby!) and Paper Fury/Fry./Furry is my faaaaavorite blog ever, so I’ve just taken to… buying anything Cait suggests. It’s been great. My bookshelves and my wallet are groaning in tandem and I’M IN PARADISE! Can’t wait for it all to arrive and I go on a CAIT SAYS spree! HURRY UP, AMAZON!
MAGGIE STIEFVATER WILL ALWAYS BE THE BEST. *happy sigh* But I’ve been reading her books for, like, ever so they couldn’t be on this list *sad face* BUT OMG. GOOD LIFE DECISION. I shall never lead you astray, I promise. *grins evilly*
No surprise, cake and George R.R. Martin. It wouldn’t be a post written by Cait without them! XD Also, although I had read V.E. Schwab previously, I have recently gone on to DEVOUR all her books I haven’t read this past month and have just started Vicious! I don’t know why I haven’t picked it up before now since it is SO GOOD! Lovely post as always!
I HAVE TRADEMARKS. XDXD I need to devour every book VE Schwab has out because omg, how is she so talented at writing?! IT IS RIDICULOUSLY WONDERFUL.
Becky Albertalli is awesome and I need another book by her ASAP. Also, Victoria Schwab is a writing fiend and I have no idea how she does so much (unless you borrowed her one of your clones????), but I WAS wondering whether you’ve read ADSoM, because I just read it and though CAIT WOULD LOVE THIS. So yes, those two are on my list for this year as well + Rainbow Rowell, because teeechnically I finished Fangirl this year (on Jan 1), so it counts.
i’m SURE she has clones. Isn’t she coming out with 2 books next year??! GAHHHHH It will be a good year. XD And I actually have ADSOM on my kindle but haven’t read it yet for exactly no good reason. *facepalm* I will soon though!!
I haven’t given any of these authors a try except for Moira Fowley-Doyle. To be honest I’m SCARED to get into GRRM. How will I handle all of the “nope” that you speak of? I could barely handle losing Raymond in “The Princess and the Frog”! How am I supposed deal with the death of a slew of beloved characters when I CAN’T EVEN DEAL WITH THE DEATH OF A CARTOON BUG I KNEW FOR LESS THAN AN HOUR?
Despite my fears those books are still on my list. I may choose 2016 to be the year I actually read one of them. *sigh*
I think the only new (to me) author I absolutely slobbered over this year was Sarah J. Maas. Just purchased “Throne of Glass” and I’m so impatient for “A Court of Mist and Fury”!
Okay, *pats shoulder* I gotta break this to you gently…YOU SHOULD NOT READ GRRM. XDXD I think it’d break your soul in half!! HE IS BRUTAL AND I’M STILL CRYING and I’m like 94% Vulcan who never cries in movies or books. hehe.
HAHAHHA I am currently reading Game of Thrones, and oh god, I didn’t know how asjkfgasdkjgjasdhgj it was. ALL MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS </3. And yes, VE Schwab is fantaaaabulous, and I'm glad you already got her books. I hope you enjoy them! 🙂
AhHHH I KNOW THAT FEEL. And I swear it gets worse with every book. But good thing by book 5, you end up this unemotional Vulcan. *nods* (AHAH JUST KIDDING. I’M STILL CRYING.)
VE Schwab is brilliant!! And so is Fowley-Doyle, The Accident Season was a real pleasant surprise. I need to jump back in to ASOIF and the Dust Lands trilogy. 🙂
I didn’t know what to expect with The Accident Season but ajfkdlsaf it is now the story of MY LIFE.
I just started reading “The Hunger Games” even though it’s been out for a LONG time and I am a HUGE fan. I haven’t read any books by the authors you suggested, but “Made You Up” by Francesca Zappia sounds SO GOOD!
Maddie 🙂
iheartglitterblog.wordpress.com
AHHH YAYY!!!! I hope it hasn’t been spoiled for you too much?! And Made You Up is like…perfect. XD If you only ever read one book on schizophrenia, that’d be it. *nods*
I feel really bad for only having read GRRM so far :/ but a lot of the authors you’ve mentioned were/are on my TBR.
Don’t feel bad!! Seriously!! 😀 There are sooo many authors out there, right?! awk.
YES YES & YES to Becky and Laura Ruby. I swear, I swear, I promise to pick up their books ASAP. (Though the cover of Bone Gap freaks the G out of me. I hate bees with a passion. I hope they change it in the paperback.)
FRANCESCA ZAPPIA. Made You Up was LIFE. Like, aren’t we all already awaiting her next novel???
Eek. So, so many! Elissa Janine Hoole (The Memory Jar is a REVELATION), Charlotte Huang, Morgan Matson, Jandy Nelson, and the list goes on!
AGH. I hate bees too. (I’m allergic!!) But I STILL managed to love Bone GAp, so I hope you’ll be okay with it too. xD There’s one scene where they have bees all over them but…yeah. >_> Good luck. *pats shoulder*
I really really want to read The Memory Jar!! AND YAY FOR JANDY NELSON. FOREVER ADORE.
Ha seeing GRRM on the list reminds me I’m still taking forever to finish A Storm of Swords. I keep getting distracted by other books XD
I really need to get moving with Cinda William Chima and Rae Carson! I own some of their books and hear great things about them but still haven’t started them yet. I must be missing out on so much awesome. I also have Blood Red Road sitting unread on my TBR pile… ONE DAY I’LL GET THERE
I kind of understand 😛 Those books are looooong and kinda slow sometimes. THE AUDIOS ARE THE ONLY REASON I SURVIVED. True. Omg, so many gems on your TBR though, Bec. 😉
I’ve never heard of The Demon King series – now I feel the need to check it out! Actually, there are quite a few of these authors I haven’t read. WHEN will God grant me an extra day a week set aside for nothing but reading? WHEN?!
Omg you haven’t?! NOW YOU HAVE BEEN EDUCATED, NICOLE. *nods wildly* But here, here, I need that extra day of the week too…I’ll sign the petition. XD
There are only two new (to me) authors that really stood out to me this year – Maria Dahvana Headley and Maggie Stiefvater (thanks to you of course). I must read ALL THEIR BOOKS!
I have not read these. Except George R.R. Martin, who was a DNF. OH AND I READ VICIOUS. Vicious was beautiful, and I would really actually love if I could own that book because it was fantastic. <3 I WAAAAANT it.
However, I have heard many good things. Especially Simon. Simon and… Made You Up. Hearing good things. So I take it I need to read these…
I’m curious about The Demon King series. I read The Heir Chronicles but I didn’t like how each book focused on a new character. I liked the characters she got me all attached to in each book and missed them in successive books! But I like her writing so I kind of want to give a different series a try.
Ugh, I hated The Heir!! Like, I couldn’t stand it. XD Which I found really odd, but it was nearly like it wasn’t the same author…but ANYWAY. I think she’s really grown as a writer in the Demon King series! It only has two POVs. *nods*
SARAH J. MAAS! I think she is the biggest one for me because her characterization and world building is just SO lovely and I am dying to finish Heir of Fire and then Queen of Shadows and then every book ever by her! AHHH.
YAY FOR FINDING AN AUTHOR YOU LOVE A LOT!! 😀 I hope you have a good time with Queen of Shadows!😜
Thank you!
I read GRRM as gerrumm or something like that 😂 For a second I thought you were calling him a germ 😂😂😂 Anyway I definitely agree with you on Made You Up! It’s such an important (and beautiful!) book. I’m getting Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda for Christmas, so I’ll finally be able to jump on the bandwagon ^-^
THE ACCIDENT SEASON! MADE YOU UP! I loved them, I loved them! I too will read what-the-hell-ever these two wonderful authors write in future!
Also, I have been catching up on your posts I’ve missed int he rush up-to, over, and since Christmas. And in doing so I have visited Goodreads and added numerous books to my Wishlist shelf. Which is all I seem to be doing lately. Damn everyone reading awesome books I need to read!
But from this post (I will list, as I know you like lists), I have wishlist-ed:
1) Bone Gap – everyone raves about this book. The premise doesn’t really grab me, but I trust you. Also, I’ve read a contemporary/romance feministy novel by Laura Ruby previously, Good Girls, and it was awesoooome. So I’m hoping I love this too!
2) Princess of Thorns – A retelling (ish)! And high fantasy! Will work for my challenge, and also the Flights of Fantasy reading challenge I signed up to today (which I tweeted you about). I REALLY REALLY want to read more high fantasy this year, so I’m compulsively wishlist-ing.
3) The Demon King – See above RE high fantasy. PLUS WIZARDS AND SCHOOLS AND HUMOUR! Sold.
4) Blood Red Road – This is actually already on my “Want to read” shelf, because I did have it. But I didn’t fancy it. So I think I gave it to a charity shop? Now I have to get it again because of you. LOOK WHAT YOU DID!
5) A Girl of Fire and Thorns – See above RE high fantasy.
6) Vicious – Everyone raves about V.E. Schwab. I should see what the fuss is about.
Authors I discovered this year and will be reading everything by them, ever, from this point onwards:
1) Courtney Summers – I’ve only read Some Girls Are and All the Rage, but they’re both awesome! Contemporary though. I’ve yet to read it, but if you wanted to give her a try, This Is Not a Test might be more up your street. Zombie apocalyspe. Group of teens hidding in a building. All with issues (I believe. At least the protag does).
2) Jennifer Niven – OH MY GOD, All the Bright Places was absolutely amazing! Incredible! Oh my god, I will read whatever Niven writes in the future for YA! I was lucky enough to meet her,a nd she was lovely, and seemed moved by my gushing, emotional rambles about how much the book moved me. SHE WAS SO NICE AND LOVELY!!!
3) Hannah Moskowitz – I have wanted to read her books for SO long! And this year I got to read Not Otherwise Specified, and now I Will have ALL her books, and I will be amazed by them, I just know it.
4) Jenn Bennett – NIGHT OWLS WAS AMAZING! I need more by Bennett, and I need it now!
5) Aaron Hartzler – Oh my god, What We Saw was absolutely incredible! SO GOOD! I will be first in line to get his next YA novel, I will, I will!
6) Dahlia Adler – Read Just Visiting this year, and it was such a brilliant friendship book! So good! And she’s a huge diversity advocat, and there’s diversity in all her books, and I need them! Especially Under the Lights!
7) Adam Silvera – I did not really fancy More Happy Than Not that much before I read it, but everyone raved. So I read it. AND OH MY GOD IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE!
That’s it. I will shut up now.
I’ve only read a couple on your list. I do have a lot of these on my current TBR though and now I am even more excited to read them. I just got Bone Gap for Christmas and I can’t wait to find the time to read that one. It just sounds like it’s going to be such a good read!
AHHH I HOPE YOU LOVE BONE GAP. Also thank you for all the comments!! IT IS SO SPECIAL AND I FEEL HONOURED. :’)
OKAY I NEED TO READ Simon ASAP, IT SEEMS. IT LOOKS FABULOUS AND YES. I’m crossing my fingers that my library will have it otherwise I will be an extraordinarily sad bookworm. *crosses fingers and eyes and toes*
You’re the second person today I’ve seen write basically the same thing about Made You Up and now I’m sold. I’d seen the cover but for some reason never realized what it’s about. And now it wins all the awards because it has a fabulous premise AND cover.
I NEED The Accident Season IN MY LIFE!! I got to read a couple chapters in this gigantic book of ARC excerpts a while back and it looked so good I simply could not.
Also, “holy cakepops” needs to be a phrase regularly used by the entirety of the human race.
