Hello little gremlins I hope you’ve been working on the most WONDERFUL stories.
Wait, did I say gremlin? I mean writer. Obviously. Hah…so easy to get those words confused.
Anyway.
Welcome to the June edition of Beautiful People! If you’re new here, it’s basically interview questions for your characters so you can get to know them better and also introduce them to your blog followers! It’s also monstrously fun and all the gremlins are doing it.
And good luck to all those gearing up for Camp NaNoWriMo in July! Yeah…I don’t know how it’s already June either. What even. I’m still plodding through edits, but hopefully I’ll be writing something with knives and thieves in it during July. Be sure to tell me about your upcoming projects in the comments!
Beautiful People is a writing blog meme which I co-host with the marvellous Sky @ Further Up and Further. We post questions at the beginning of each month (generally around the 5th) that you can answer on your own blogs! It’s designed (A) to help you get to know your characters better, and (B) share with us about your writing projects!
OH! And the linkup is open all month. And check out our FAQ page for more details and to see the archives.
DON’T FORGET TO TAKE THE BUTTON!
Or link to this page so anyone can join in!
- What’s their favourite place they’ve ever visited?
- What’s one mistake they made that they learned from?
- What was their favourite subject in school? Or favourite thing to learn about?
- What’s their favourite flower/growing thing?
- Have they ever made someone cry? What happened?
- Would you consider them a reliable or unreliable narrator?
- What do they dream about at night?
- They’ve gone out for a “special meal.” What would they eat?
- What’s at least one thing they want to do before they die?
- Do they have any distinguishing or unique talents?
Well, I got to 10k on Lighter Places which is good, except I have no plan, but I’m really enjoying writing it so that is a bonus. I want to get to 15k by the end of this week then come back and finish the first draft in July. We’ll see how that goes. Other May writing things was winning a cash prize for writing from school which as pretty fun (and I can use the money for a new laptop) I’ve sort of been struggling with poetry because I want to write it but it’s also so vague. I’m not sure if I should do this…but any motvation to develop my characters is good, and I love the questions!
Enjoying what you’re working on is THE BEST FEELING EVER. 🎉🎉🎉 I hope finishing the draft goes well!! And omggg YOU WON A WRITING THING. THAT IS AMAZING. CAKE FOR YOU. And I was going to say “ooh money for books!” but I suppose spending it on, like, other things is also sensible too. 😉😂
I’m struggling with the begining of my book, because I decided to re-write the entire begining, AND IT’S SO DAUNTING. but I hate the begining, so that’s my motivation. XD something going splendidly…..hmmmm……something going splendidly…….hmmmmm…….I plotted two other novels??? which are distracting me from this one, yay……I wish I could hire somone to re-write it exactly as I want it. 😛 XD
Most crazily, ~Olive
Oh I totally get how daunting rewritings can be!! I’M IN THE SAME BOAT. I’LL BRING CAKE AND WE CAN COMMISERATE TOGETHER. (But don’t abandon the rewrites for the shiny ideas just yet. 😉 It’ll be worth it, I promise!)
I’ve recently discovered that music no longer helps me write – it hinders me.
…I wish I had realised this before I handed my coursework in.
I AM THE SAME. I quit writing with music about 2 years ago? And my writing is like 10000 x better and faster. 😂
I finished my first novel (The Fair Queen) and sent it to beta readers and one has already finished it and loved it and I’m flailing!!! 😀
I’m definitely taking part in Camp Nano in July, I feel like Nano is the only thing keeping my writing life on track! I’ve put The Fair Queen aside while my betas read it and give me their notes, I’ll do the final round of edits once they’re all in, so for July I’m currently outlining a sort of YA contemporary/magical realism version of The Secret Garden (thank you for the idea!) so I’m gonna use my characters from my new WIP for this 🙂 Excited to get to know them!
OMG THAT IS AN AMAZING ACCOMPLISHMENT, ALL THE CONGRATS, LYNDSEY!! *cheers for you and gives you cake* I hope you get lots of flaily feedback. 😉
I really love NaNos too, hehe. It’s so much more motivating to work when you know lots of other writers are stabbing away at their words too, right?! And OMG I’m so so pleased you’re doing a Secret Garden retelling. 😍
I have been working a slew of projects, everything from my novel to a short story collection. Unfortunately I’ve made little progress since school is so busy, but I look forward to getting these projects under way once my summer starts. This would be what I am suffering with. Reading and blogging however is going splendidly, I can’t wait to continue posting and discovering new titles. Love these questions, I look forward to using them to further develop my characters in my novel.
I hope you do get tons of time in summer to do ALL the writing things.🎉 (School can be so rude with chewing up all one’s time, right? Sheesh.) I’m super glad reading/blogging are going well for you! I confess I suck at multitasking.😂 My reading and blogging have taken a dive because I’m so focused on editing haha.
I can never seen to find a happy medium with all my literary things! I am either hardcore reading or blogging, and lacking on writing or vice versa. Such a pain sometimes!
Camp NanoWrimo!!!!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!I’m dead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I HOPE YOU HAD FUN! 🎉🎉
I won a school writing thing in Italian! Students in the whole state could participate and I won the Originality one! It was so unexpected 🙈
AHHH THAT’S AMAZING. I WILL CHEER FOR YOU A MILLION TIMES NOW!! *flails and gives you cake*
Congratulaaaations!
Thanks! And the ceremony will be at the castle of Chambord : that’s amazing but it will be stressful!
Ooh, these questions are awesome, Cait! I’m looking at what I have planned to post this month and it looks like I might be able to squeeze it in! I hope I can, since I haven’t done BP in soooo long! (Actually, since the last BB!) Right now I’m working on a fantasy project, just in the planning stage. My main problem is that the plot seems really generic??? But I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Somehow. XD
(PS I may be sending you an email soon, if you’re not too busy. 🙂 )
FANTASY IS THE BEST THOUGH. I hope yours behaves nicely for you! And like if you’re worried about it being too generic just put cake in every chapter and kill everyone at the end. That’s what I do!
..wait. ok um maybe iGNORE MY ADVICE FOREVER.
(AND YES PLEASE SEND EMAILS I WILL WAIT WITH EAGER ANTICIPATION.)
I just happened to write a post the other day about what I’m working on! (sweats nervously hoping that wasn’t too pushy…hey, I’m new at this. :P)
I’m most excited to start working on a Snow White retelling for a writing contest I just discovered! Also, I’m not sure It’s going SPLENDIDLY but I think blogging is going okay, I’m starting to figure out how to make graphics so that’s cool. But I’m still struggling with actually being disciplined and getting on a schedule and getting some ACTUAL writing done, instead of getting distracted with developing my characters because that’s a little more fun for me. 😛
Hhaha, you’re fine! I’ll definitely go check out your post ASAP. 😉 And eeeep a contest is exciting. I SHALL HAVE MY FINGERS CROSSED AND BE WISHING YOU ALL THE GOOD LUCK. (Also honestly being disciplined is the hardest part of writing.😂)
I love these questionssss. I AM HAVING CHARACTER PROBLEMS SO I’M DEFINITELY ANSWERING THESE. BUT I MIGHT NOT POST THEM?? WHO EVEN KNOWS. #mystery
I SHALL WAIT WITH EAGER ANTICIPATION TO SEE WHAT YOU DO.
What have I been working on lately??? Hmm, well, I’m currently working on two projects (=not a good idea), a screenplay and a novel. I’m struggling on the screenplay! It’s such a different format to the novels I’ve been writing for eternity and I’m finding characterisation and plot really hard. As to the novel, I can hardly say its going splendidly, but its going better than the screenplay…I think…maybe. who even knows? Not me that’s for sure! Hopefully the BP questions will help me figure some things out!
Eeep, multitasking two ideas IS really impressive though!! I hope you awarded yourself chocolate for that. *nods* And omg screenplays sound impossible to me to write. 😂 GOOD LUCK!! I HOPE IT BEHAVES FOR YOU.
Yes! I was hoping another one of these would be posted, I can’t wait to take part this time! I also managed to start my blog this week which I’m so excited for, finally a place to share my writing and book reviews.
I’m working my way trying to finish my outline for my WIP before Camp NaNoWriMo in July. Hopefully, I’ll be able to combat a chunk of my WIP during July then wrap up the rest in August. OH! I need to find Cabin Mates too for Camp or wait until I’m sorted in one. I would like to find some beforehand though.
Good luck to you, Cait! <3
Yayyyy so glad you like them! We generally do one every month, unless we forget. 😂 And also CONGRATS ON YOUR BLOG!! I can’t wait to go check it out. GOod luck with your outline. 😉 I need to get cracking on mine for Camp in July too. *gasps and runs around like a headless chicken* I swear this year is going far too fast.
Gahhj I want to do this but my writing has been NOPE lately. I have ideas but no words. *cries*
Nooo, Bee, I am sad. I hope the words come back soon. 😭😭
Ahhh! Camp NaNoWriMo! I wanted to cheat and start working on it now, because, 25,000 words? HAHAHAHA AREN’T YOU A FUNNY ONE?
Not happening.
But I have not in fact visited my characters in… about… a month… So… Yeah.
Good luck with Camp! 🎉🎉
