Oh, blogglings, I’m busting with oodles of excitement today! It’s been boiling in the pot for a while, but finally I get to announce the re-launch of the writers meme: Beautiful People. What is this? HUZZAH! I will tell you all.
Several years ago my friend Sky @ Further Up and Further In hosted a writers meme, called (guess?) Beautiful People. It’s involves a monthly set of interview questions to help you (and your blog readers) get to know your characters from your works-in-progress. It’s awesome for writers! So much fun! And it then shut down. Wherein we all wailed. But now Sky’s re-launching it, and because she’s awesome, she asked me if Notebook Sisters wanted to co-host.
Do I? DO I?
After I finished being ecstatic out of my skull, I said, “Heck yeah,” and we began brainstorming.
If you look to our header, there’s a new tag titled “Beautiful People” and you’ll be able to go there for aaaall the info, the buttons, and the dates. Until then, I’ll pop a little FAQ on this post and then leave you with a delicious question. Mwahaha.
You can also read a post, done by the wonderful Sky, to get a feel of the meme!
What is Beautiful People?
Beautiful People is for writers. Every month, we post a list of 10 questions for you to answer about your characters. It’s designed to help you get to know your characters – their quirks, their personality, their flaws, and who they are.
Can I join Beautiful People anytime?
Absolutely. It’s designed so you can jump in whenever new questions are posted. They’ll be posted at the beginning of the month, but you can join in at aaaany time.
Can I submit questions to Beautiful People?
Yes! In fact, we encourage it. If you’d like to submit questions, you have two choices. Either leave a comment on Notebook Sisters or Further Up and Further In, or send us emails. Whichever way you choose, we’ll attempt to use your questions!
Why is it called Beautiful People?
Originally, Sky and her previous co-host Georgie coined the term! The general idea is that our characters are beautiful people with their own stories that deserve to be told.
When is it?
The meme is live on the 5th of every month! You can join in at any time during the month, just add your post-url to the linky. And don’t forget we’d love you to share the comment-love and visit some fellow linkers.
And this is where YOU come in, blogglings. The first BP (yeah, I’m too lazy to type “Beautiful People” PLUS I live in Australia, so naturally it has a nick-name) will launch on the 5th of June, just under 3 weeks away! We have some intro questions for the first round, but we want YOU to submit interview questions too.
You can throw them in the comments below…or, if you want, you can email them to me at notebooksisters@gmail.com!
Ready for some writer meme madness? Huzzah! Woot! WE CAN’T WAIT.
do you have any suggestions of interview questions? and what do you think of the re-launch of the beautiful people writers meme? excited? (will you be linking up?)
Cait isn’t just a ferocious eater of books. She writes too. Always nice fluffy stories, like blood sucking faeries and ancient Greek boxing-to-the-death and apocalyptic robot wars. Fluffy, see? Currently she’s working on plots for a book that was NOT supposed to have a sequel. Between writing, she’s reading The Minnow.
Ooooh, how exciting! That reminds me of something we do in drama. It's called hotseating. Basically it's like an interview, but you're in character, and you answer the questions as that character. So this is like the writing version! If it's anything like hotseating, I'm sure it will be really useful. Hmm. A question. Okay, here's one (I'm going to do it in second person, just because): who's one person you really miss? It could be someone who's passed away, or someone you're not close with anymore, or someone who's moved away. That's my question. This sounds so exciting! I can't wait. I just have to figure out which character I'm going to do it for…
It totally does sound like hotseating (and that's a new word for me…but not surprising because I didn't really go to school….yep, me: rabble). Eeeeek. QUESTIONS TO COLLECT. XD Go Emily!!
PS: I'm totally voting to be introduced to your Alice book, you know…*nudge, nudge*
Ooooh, that is a REALLY super-awesome idea. (remind me to send you some stuff I'm brainstorming :D)
I'm a newbie writer so this is pretty exciting! I'm not sure if I could link up EVERY month, but I'll try to every time I can. This is really interesting considering a lot of bookish people are aspiring authors! π
I know, right?! I had no idea until a few weeks ago that SO many of us book bloggers actually write too! It makes sense to me…I think they kind of go together. π
Ooh! Fantastic, Cait!! =) I can't wait, I would love to do this!! =D Thanks for co-hosting! π Can't wait!!! =)TW Wrightravensandwriting.blogspot.com
Yay! Hope you link up! IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME.
Ohhh this sounds AWESOME. I am seriously excited for this! SUCH an awesome idea. π π π
I can't take any credit for the actual idea …buuuut, IT IS AWESOME. I'm pretty excited it's starting back up again. XD
Sounds interesting! I'll see if I can create a post myself about one of my characters. Questions:- What's the favorite dish?- What does he/she absolutely hate?- What's his/her favorite word to use?- What's his/her favorite subject at school? And so on π
And of course: What's his/her favorite kind of chocolate? ;-)arendedewit.blogspot.com
Ooh, fabulous questions, Arende! XD *adds question to the list*
I can't think of any questions right now but I am SO up for this! Looking forward to posting! <3
Woohoo!!! Hope you can join us! XD
Sounds like it will be fun to read. Interested to hear about your characters ladies.
It’s going to be super awesome. π
This sounds amazing! I definitely want to join in the fun. π Here's some questions:-What is your character's childhood fear?-What is something he has always secretly dreamed of doing, but thought impossible?-What is something he is impractically afraid of?-What is his favorite thing for breakfast?-Is he a night owl or a morning person?-How does he view his parents?-What is his relationship with his siblings? And if he has none, then what does he think about being an only child?-Does he say everything that pops into his head, or does he leave a lot unsaid?-What is his opinion on the concept of thinking out loud?Heh, that was probably waaay too many questions. But my brain got into gear and just didn't want to stop. Can't wait! π
*scribbles onto the list* Eeeep! Thanks, Ashely. XD
Yay! The BP linkup is so much fun. I don't have any questions, at the moment, but I'm looking forward to the relaunch!
I know, right?! I was pretty sad when it closed for a while, but sooo keen it’s starting again. π
I love this! Awesome idea, as they say, characters are an extension of yourself. Someone said that didn't they? It might have been me actually.I doubt I could write anything that anyone would want to read.I'd love to know who are the most influential people in their lives are.
*adds to list* Huzzah! Great question, actually! And gosh, I hope my characters aren’t extensions of myself TOO much. That’s scary. My characters are kind of psycho…
I'm so excited for this!!! I didn't even know about the original meme, so it's a brand new bucket of awesome to me :DThis will actually be great for me, because I'm struggling with one of my characters right now and need to get inside his head a little more.
BUCKETS AND BUCKETS OF AWESOME. And I know how you feel with getting into characters heads. Gah. Either they’re ALL there or I’ve got like, half a name, or something. Where is the middle ground here?!
Admittedly, I am excited about this. I discovered the original meme during it's hiatus and was sad I couldn't join then with new questions. Question though: I'm on a closed/private blog so I can't exactly link up. What do I do?Can't wait to see what happens with all of this!
Well, you can still use the questions of course, I guess it just won’t be much use to you to be meeting up and swapping stories with other bloggers. *shrugs* But you can definitely use the questions!
Thanks, Cait. I’ll see what I can do, anyways. Maybe I could just open my blog for one day a month. Thanks for understanding.
This looks like a fun and useful tool for my writing! Here are a few of my question suggestions.-Is there a memory/sensation/object, etc. that your character associates with his/her favorite color?-What does your character regret the most in his/her life?-What is your character's happiest memory? Most sorrowful memory?-What is your character's pet peeve?-Are there any personality traits that your character either hides or reveals at school or home? (In other words, does he/she act differently at school than at home, and if so, how?)http://www.butterfliesoftheimagination.weebly.com/
*adds questions to the list* AWESOME, Ana! I’m loving that happiest vs. sorrowful memory. That’s an awesome one.
Fantastic idea, Cait! I'll definitely be linking up with this in June.In terms of questions, I drew up a sheet of such questions about a year ago that remains longer than most of my books to date. I'll pluck a few from that. What are your character's habits and mannerisms? (Examples: nervous tics, nail-biting, foot-tapping.)What are your character's beliefs and superstitions? (Examples: conspiracy theories, throwing salt, fear of black cats.)If your character has superhuman powers, what are the restrictions on said powers? (Examples: can only cast darkness spells twice a day, can only breathe fire when angry.)What are your character's taglines/catchphrases, or just phrases they use more often than others? (Examples: "Wow!" "You know what?" "Just saying…") If your character had a theme song, what might it be?Finchhttp://sophrosynousepistofinch.blogspot.com/
Aaaawesome questions. I’m adding them all to our list. XD Can’t wait till June, eeeep, for when it all takes off officially. XD
Ooh! This is so cool. I'm reeeeeeallly scared to show my characters to the world but maybe I'll have enough courage in three weeks time … and congrats on being a co-host!
I have to get up the courage mostly too. π BUT WE CAN DO IT TOGETHER. HUZZAH.
Oh, goodness. I have a whole DOCUMENT of character interview and plot//story questions. I’ll send them to you and Sky ^^
This post totally didn’t turn up in my blogger newsfeed *grumpy face* Anyway, this meme sounds totally awesome! I’ve seen it around in the past, so it’s great it’s coming back. And congratulations on co-hosting it. I shall have to keep my eyes open for the launch of this and hopefully join in at some point (if my characters agree not to be boring. It’s never certain how they will behave).
Congrats about the co-hosting of Beautiful People, it sounds like a really worthwhile meme for writers!
I am so totally completely wildly excited for this! I had never heard about the meme before and now it just is thrilling the socks off me (actually I’m not wearing socks, so figuratively it’s thrilling the socks off me). I’m very private about my work, so I don’t know if I would publically participate, but I will sure be answering these questions and can’t wait to see it begin.xx
Ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh I used to love this meme! Would love to see it back!
Sounds cool! π I'll join in. Stori Tori's Blog
I love how excited people are about this (myself included). My blog has been pretty quiet (as far as visitors go) this week, so when I checked on it this morning after posting a BP announcement, I was surprised (and pleased) to see that I had a great quantity of pageviews and two comments (obviously that is a small number for you, but I am still new to the blogging world and two comments made my day π ) Obviously you guys have made quite a stir in the blogging community. :)I left some questions on Skye's page, but I wanted to thank both of you for hosting BP. Thanks!http://commandedwriter.blogspot.com/2014/05/beautiful-people-to-return-soon.html
