Bookworms have a lot of problems. Which is why, when Jolien @ The Fictional Reader tagged for the Reader Problems Tag I was like…
Yes please and thank you, Jolien!
1. You have 20,000 books on your TBR. How in the world do you decide what to read next?
Ugh. This is the hardest part of reading, I honestly promise you.
I mostly read books by release date and library-due-date. Which is why books that I own get pushed to the back of the pile and I literally never get to read them.
I also put up blog polls and make you guys pick because I am the overlord and what else are minions for?

You, my minions, are the puppy. You just go all goopy and soft when I say “Obey my will.” Aren’t you all adorable?
2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you quit or commit?
I leave books unfinished about as much as I say I’m not Queen of the World. So basically: NEVER.
But there are always exceptions.
BOOKS I’VE DNF’D:
- You by Caroline Kepnes: I thought this was YA. HAHAHAHA. No. It was a psychotic murderer obsessing/stalking a women and…no.
- Wicked by Gregory Maguire: I tried and I tried, but it wasn’t about a witch getting evil. It was about the politics of Oz.
- Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin: I tried reading this about 4 years ago and now I would probably continue, but then I thought it was ridiculous and badly written.
- The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda: Because ugh to vampires having armpit sex. Don’t even ask.
3. The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, but so far away on your Goodreads reading challenge. Do you try to catch up and how?
This has never happened. I’ve either met my goal or have exceeded by 220%. No in between, peoples.
4. The covers of a series you love do. not. match. How do you cope?
My The Mortal Instruments series matches but NOT IN SIZE. It breaks my heart everyday when I look at them.
And this? This is just a catastrophe.
5. Everyone and their mother love a book you really don’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?
What are you talking about? Everyone has to agree with me. I AM THE OVERLORD.
But on that off and very unlikely chance that the entire planet doesn’t agree with me (weirdness), then I get out my displeasure in a review. There’s always some popsicle who will console me.
For instance:
- I hung out with Kristen @ My Friends Are Fiction because we both didn’t like Red Queen.
- I commiserated with Engie @ Musings From Neville’s Navel when I didn’t love Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters.
6. You’re reading a book and you are about to start crying in public. How do you deal?
I…I don’t cry about books. I cry on the inside, but I’ve literally only shed a tear (singular tear) about once or twice.
7. A sequel of a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you re-read the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on Goodreads? Cry in frustration?!
CRY IN FRUSTRATION. That’s the first step. I have ginormous and glamorous intentions of rereading, but who really has time for that? There’s too many new shiny books that need attention.
Like Jolien, I find Recaptains extremely helpful. They recap books in series in great detail and…you should just read the recaps on Maggie Stiefvater’s books because SHE WROTE THEM and they’re hilarious.
8. You do not want anyone. ANYONE. Borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people nope when they ask?
This is nicely isn’t it?
9. Reading ADD. You’ve picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over your reading slump?
Seriously is this what everyone does? I NEVER DO THIS. If I pick up a book, I finish it. Sometimes I read more than one book at once, but one is an ebook, one is a physical, and one might be audio.
If I get a slump, though, I just keep reading. I rate a lot of books 3-stars and whinge on twitter. But I get over it.
10. There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?
I don’t buy books.
I’m clearly not a typical bookworm by the standards of this tag, am I?! When I do buy books it’s because it’s my birthday/Christmas or I’m literally dying for the book and I CANNOT EXIST unless I read it. (Like, for instance, Heir of Fire or Blue Lily Lily Blue.)
I also only buy books I’m sure I’ll like. (My bookshelf is full of sequels.)
11. After you’ve bought the new books you can’t wait to get to, how long they sit on your shelf before you get to them?
This is embarrassing but….it can be years. My to-be-read-pile (which is pictured for question #1) has about 10 books that I own and have not read. Purely because ARCs have first priority and then library books and I have a library addiction.
I’d give up my library addiction, but I’m not a quitter.
Books I’ve had a long time and really need to read:
- Dorothy Must Die: I’ve had this since April. My bad.
- Eon: I’ve had this since, like, September or something.
- The Karma Club: Agh. I don’t even know. Must be at least 12 months.
- The Diviners: I’ve had this for at least 6 months. The size scares me.
- The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making: Since April…
- The entire Gallagher Girl series: Well, we are missing one book, BUT STILL. We’ve had these for 2+ years.
Maybe I’ll tackle them this year? WHO KNOWS? One can always be optimistic, right?
Tagging is hard, so if you don’t do tags and I’ve tagged you: ignore me. Alternately, feel free to steal this!

so, my bookish minions, do you relate to these questions? or are you an odd-reader-like-me? and (i’m super curious) what do you do when you’ve forgotten previous books in a series? share your secrets!
Cait hopes you enjoyed being compared to as puppies in this post. Because puppies are the cutest things in the universe (unless, of course, we’re talking about Cait’s puppy, which is cute but utterly naughty). Currently, she’s reading Percy Jackson and The Titan’s Curse and has met the infamous Nico.
By these standards I’m not much of a typical reader either. I like to finish pretty much all the books I start, and I don’t normally read more than one book at a time. I’m boggling at you reading three books at once. Guess we’re just awesomely different. When I’ve forgotten the previous book in the series I either ask my sister who is freakishly good at remembering the plots of all the books she’s ever read or I read it anyway. I’m pretty used to reading books in a series out of order and just working it all out as I go, so it’s not too bad for me.
I don't always read three books at once. XD Right now I'm only reading one. hehe. But it is awesome how everyone is different. Agreed. XD It's handy to have reading sisters, right??
This is hilarious and I am totally okay with being a puppy. But I’m like you – I don’t DNF books. Except, like, Paradise Lost because it was about a million pages and really dense. But I would like to read Les Mis one day so we’ll see how that goes. AND YES FORGETTING PREVIOUS BOOKS IN A SERIES IS SUCH A BIG PROBLEM. I read Shadow and Bone like a month ago and I’d already forgotten the ending. Mostly I just try to skim over the end of the first book and…try to pick things up. Doesn’t always work, though O_O
I wouldn't even attempt something like Paradise Lost so kudos for you there for even trying. XD AGH!! Me too with Shadow and Bone! I mean, I read it about half a year ago, but I've literally forgotten the whole thing. I'm trying to decide if that's bad (was it unmemorable?? I gave it 4-stars! I liked it!) or if I just am really brain dead atm. xD
My biggest reading problem is that, if I know a book is coming out, I save my birthday or Christmas money so I can buy it straight away…as soon as I finish it, I realise that I have another year to go (Heroes of Olympus did this to me every time 🙁 ).
As for not getting to books ver quickly, I have had Runelight since October 2012 and am only just reading it. This is partly because I got into a this awkward situation where I just couldn’t bring myself to read last year (don’t worry, I’m well and truly cured) and partly because it’s so THICK! Seriously, it’s like a brick.
I am used to disliking books that others love. It’s called being difficult. The Hunger Games is the one that comes to mind. I just find it easiest not to talk about them, that way nobody tries to convert me.
I don’t generally forget previous books…I remember fiction like it’s my own life story. Non-fiction is the one I have trouble with (naturally, since that’s actually useful).
There are literally so many releases coming out this year, I'm hoarding birthday money for later when they come out. xDTHICK BOOKS SCARE ME TOO. They could be weapons, honestly. Hey, I hear ya. I don't talk about books I don't like because I don't like arguing. (Although I do like THG, but HEY. WE SHALL AGREE TO DISAGREE AND NOT CONVERT EACH OTHER. HUZZAH.!) I envy your impeccable memory skills. XD
Oops, I’m ticklish. *scuttles away* I agree, it’s such a disaster when the covers of a series don’t match. I have so far avoided this except for Harry Potter (and the hardback cover for DH was in the vein of the others), but the copies of ASOIAF I own are paperbacks and when the next one is released, I can only sob over my hardback. At that point, I will probably also have forgotten all the characters, so the mentioned Recaptains should probably be useful, so thanks for linking to that 🙂
It is a catastrophic disaster when they don\’t match. I only have 2 HP books, but they\’re hardback and older editions I think and I\’m loathe to even attempt purchasing more because MATCHING IS AN ISSUE HERE.
YES YES YES YES YES TO ALL OF THESE. ESPECIALLY #1 BECAUSE THAT IS HOW I’M FEELING RIGHT NOW. I literally spent about ten minutes just staring at my (albeit beautiful bookshelf) trying to decide which one I should read next. And I still haven’t decided what I’m going to read. -sobs- Also, I no longer let people borrow my books. I haven’t for awhile now. Not since my mother borrowed Catching Fire and spilled cherry juice ALL OVER THE PAGES. Oh, and, he completely butchered my copy of Eragon, too.
I was most displeased.
Omg. That is not okay. THAT IS NOT OKAY AT ALL. My mother never reads my books, but my sister returned one with a bent cover.
I was ridiculously and volcanically displeased.
(But for some reason I\’ve leant her like a billion books lately, I obviously don\’t learn.)
TELL ME EVERYTHING ABOUT THOSE VAMPIRES HAVING ARMPIT SEX. NOW.
AND HOW DO YOU NOT CRY WHEN READING A BOOK? ARE YOU EVEN HUMAN?
Also, how can you forget a previous book in the series? IT’S STILL A BOOK GODDAMMIT.
But if I do feel the need to read up on something, I’ll just check out goodreads and a few of the more detailed reviews of the book, if I haven’t reviewed it myself in the past. That pretty much helps me remember. Though I do like re-reading books before the next installment in the series comes out, too.
NO. I DO NOT EVEN WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT.
I am not human. I thought we established this? Ruler of all? Extreme overlord?
Oh my God, vampires having armpit sex?!?!?!?! That sounds like pretty much the worst thing ever.
Also, I’m terrible at remembering what happened in previous books. I usually go to my Goodreads review, because generally rereading what I thought about the book gives me some kind of vague idea about what happened. Course, sometimes this doesn’t work – my review of The 5th Wave was mostly just gushing about how great it was, which I already knew from how many stars I gave it. I’ve been putting off reading The Infinite Sea for MONTHS as a result. Sigh.
It IS. Seriously. There are only like, two, books I ever say \”just don\’t go there\” and this is one of them.
AGH! I hate putting off books merely because I don\’t remember the first. That\’s me and the Unwind series atm.
WHAT ON EARTH IS ARMPIT SEX LOL I’m oddly curious but am also going to avoid that book like the plague.
I’ve learnt how to DNF lately. It’s so liberating. I FEEL AMAZING NOW OK
RECAPTAINS SAVES MY LIFE EVERYTIME. Except, you know, when book two is recapped yet because book three hasn’t released AND I’M DYING BECAUSE WHAT ON EARTH HAPPENED AGAIN (plus, you know, I also like to seek out spoilers muahahahaa)
DON\’T EVEN ASK.
I\’m glad you\’ve learnt to DNF! I\’m still…struggling with it. >.> Although I DID DNF a book this year and, woah, it is very unlike me. 😉
I have a library addiction too. But sadly my school library has a three at-a-time limit, there aren’t public libraries in India, but at least I have a digital library. I barely buy books too. My main bookish problem is reading something and then having no one irl to talk about it with. Thank goodness for book blogging. I just got the Bane Chronicles from the e-library and I’m so happy because its snowing (despite precalculus to do 🙁 )
WAIT. THREE AT A TIME? I would pretty much fail that. *looks guilty at new stack of 8 books that was borrowed today*
I don\’t have anyone IRL to talk to about books either. Not a soul. :\'(
I NEVER DNF books. I just have to finish books or else I get really annoyed at myself. Like you, though, I can make some rare exceptions if needed. I don’t cry about books either. I just get really furious at the author. And I don’t buy books either. Cait, I think we might be partial book problem twins.
WE ARE THE SAME.
WE ARE OTHER-SIDE-OF-THE-WORLD TWINS FOR SURE.
Hahaha! Yes, it really is the most difficult task, deciding what to read next from my TBR pile!
But I’m pretty harsh on my books when I do get to them. I don’t shy away from stop reading a book no matter how much or little I read. There is way to many books out there I want to read, so I really think it’s mostly a waste of time reading stuff that I don’t like or feel completely indefferent to. Tough love! =)
But since I like to write myself, I really try to analyse what the writer do that I don’t like, to keep on learning! After that it’s parting time.
It IS true. There are too many books and it seems ridiculous to waste time on books you hate, right?! But, like, the other day I was reading There Will Be Lies and I HATED it….but the ending was freakishly brilliant so I\’m really glad I didn\’t DNF. x) I always get concerned I\’ll miss some glorious ending if I DNF.
That sounds like one awesome ending! Haha. And I do believe you’re right, a lot can be missed! I think it’s a strength when people are able to stick to what they read no matter what, I think it just comes down to me not having any kind of patience what so ever. I should probably work on that! =)
SO CUTE! I would definitely do this post-tag just for fun, were it not that I am scheduled to post a a bizillion other posts this coming week before the holidays are over for me (haha, gross exaggeration!). . . but I totally enjoyed reading this, Cait! It’s funny how we, bookworms, struggle with so many problems with our love of reading, but never stop, and never want to be helped from our problems, really. A bit like a writer’s life, I guess =)
First of all, the gifs were so funny and sweet, and I love them <3
So much puppy love!!
Your bookworm problems are 50% like mine and 50% opposite mine, I think :D.
I have 2000 + books on my to-read list on Goodreads. Not fibbing. And like 40 books in my bookcase I haven't read yet (not speaking of library over-dues). . . how do I pick the right books and read them all in my life-time???!!!!!! I don't even ever have TBR books. *blushes*
I love nice-looking covers for my books on my shelves. . . and if they all match in the series, oh joy! My favourite is "The Tales of Goldstone Wood" at the moment. They're all so shiny and lovely, and there are still only 7 books!!!!!!!! I like how your City-of-Bones series is not all matching in size. Ouch! They look pretty grand though, all the same.
I have my moments, where I can't get into the books I am reading; I might totally love it at a different time, but not now and that means I eventually lay it down for a more "suitable book"; I will come back later, and think it is perfect (why did it take so long to get into it?!!!). So I am a very picky reader, and try to choose the right books for the mood I am in. That makes so much difference on how I enjoy a book! I can have up to 5 to 6 books I'm 'currently' reading (more like snacking on them) until I click with one or two books and devour them like a wolf-pack. I think that's partly why I have so many 4 and 5 star-ratings on the books I read per year. The ones with 2 or 3 stars. . . WELL! They're few, but they sting like anything.
I don't think it is unusual that a bibliophile like you doesn't buy too many books; I have heard that often. I have a weakness for book-buying though. I use almost all my pocket-money savings on books; and only ever regret it if I find a nicer/cheaper offer elsewhere after I did my purchase. I love collecting books. And my favourite sort of books never come cheap *sobs*. So I save up and binge-buy, and stay bankrupt for a while after that. But it is totally worth it! Book-buying is my favourite form of shopping, aside from Christmas-gifts for family. It is just so hard because the only real places I find my books are from Angus and Robertson, or Dymocks, and they're so expensive. Online is great, but international postage – *starts crying* :(. But I am really excited about a Bookfest coming up on Saturday of second-hand book-sale in the city. It looks huge, and I hope I can find some good buys. I CAN'T WAIT!!!
Have you tried bookdepository.com?? Seriously, their prices are GREAT and they\’re in the UK but freeeeee postage!! *Flails forever* I\’m just about to make an order, actually, hehe, with my birthday money XD When I\’m rich and famous *dreams wildly* I shall buy ALL THE BOOKS I PLEASE. Seriously. *nods*
Ohhh, but I love that….\”snacking on books\”. xD That is just perfection.
Ah! Like you, I have SO many books on my bookshelf I need to read! Once a year I go to a big used booksale, and buy a tonnnnnn of books that look interesting by authors I know, and then I don’t really ever get to them to read. I love rereading, so why take a chance on something I might not like? As far as recapping on a series…a new book was being released Dec 10, so I decided (in November! I decided this less than a month away from the release date) that I would reread all 16 books prior to the new release. O.o I did really well, up until the end. XD See, I wanted to finish them all before the 10th, so that the day I got my book in the mail, I would have had a recap on the entire series. I ended up skipping the last three books and going to the new one. XD
I don’t think I will attempt that again, unless I have more time. 😛
Wooow. 16 books that fast? I ADMIRE YOU. I\’m binge reading the Percy Jackson (first series anyway) and, like I read 2 in a row, but now I\’m taking a break to read Skulduggery before getting back to it. >.> I can never stay focused!
Library sales are the death of me. I always buy books and then don\’t read them. XD
Don’t admire me too much! They weren’t like 500 page books or anything. XD It’s hard for me to stay focused unless I reallllly love the book. XD
Right! That’s exactly how it goes with me. XD
It’s weird, but I have a REALLY good memory when it comes to reading and writing (not so much on my chores … that can be awkward, but we’re not here to talk about chores, are we?). I almost never have to reread a book, even when it’s been three or four years between getting my hands on a sequel. There may be a character or three that has become hazy, or a couple smaller plot points that I’ve forgotten were issues, but for the most part, I remember the important stuff.
As for how you pick a book when you have 20,000 to chose from (which is … accurate … I have a lot of books on my kindle that I’ve picked up for free) I have no idea. Especially when I hit a reading slump like I did last year. Right now, I’m devouring books. Already at six for the year – and they’ve all been physical! I rarely read physical books anymore! It’s called … I went to the library last week and picked up some books I knew would be interesting.
I ENVY YOUR MEMORY, OKAY?!! I seriously have none. Whenever my family compares childhood memories I\’m always like \”Well…I existed. I think.\” -_- It\’s shocking.
Ooh, go you!! I\’ve read a whole bunch this year because I\’m TRYING to get my TBR down to, like, a reasonable size. I just picked up 8 more books from the library though. What even is my problem here.
I just finished The Titan’s Curse and I’m about to start book #4 😀
ME TOO! Well, I just paused because I\’m reading Skulduggery 4. But then I\’m reading PJ 4. XD
Puppygifspuppygifspuppygifs.
Great post – I really like this tag. Aggghh, my Lunar Chronicles doesn’t match either. 🙁 Speaking of which, are you excited about Fairest?? I am, but what I really want is WINTER.
AM I EXCITED ABOUT FAIREST? LET ME THINK.
AFJLKDSADS
YES YES YES I AM.
But I\’m very very disappointed Winter got pushed back. I kind of hoped they\’d just release both in one month. *wishful thinking* Ohhh, but I WOULD be 43% appeased if they\’re release the cover already dangit.
Weird. You are the opposite of me. I physically CAN NOT read library books. I mean, I love libraries. They are magical places and I spend and inordinate amount of time curled up in their armchairs but only because the library is near my school. But how do you read their actual books? There’s crinkly plastic and mysterious stains and folds! Also my bookshelf looks SO PRETTY with all my precious book children. Give them back? NEVER.
Also I’m a bit embarrassed, but my room, bed, nightstand, living room, etc are all littered with half finished books. I finish books by what’s nearby and what genre I feel like. Whatever. I can feel the judgement.
It\’s hard to give back library books sometimes…but but but I wouldn\’t be the reader I am with a library. I just cannot physically afford books.
When I\’m rich though….I SHALL BUY ALL THE BOOKS AND STARE AT THEM FOREVER AND NOT WORRY IF I READ THEM OR NOT BECAUSE I\’LL JUST OWN THEM BECAUSE THEY\’RE PRETTY.
PUPPIEEEESSSS I LOVE PUPPIES SO MUCH. They’re so adorable. I’m really bad at DNFing, I also like finishing a book once I’ve started because this one time I was so close to DNFing a book but then I surpasses page 80 and I LOVED it and it became one of my favorite books ever so now I don’t like DNFing in case I love love love the book! Thank you so much for tagging me, will hopefully post it tomorrow! <3
PUPPIES ARE THE BEST. Sometimes. Unless it\’s mine. lol Mine is so naughty. XD
Same, though! I just finished There Will Be Lies and I HATED the first 100 pages and after that it was pure awesomeness. I\’m sooo glad I didn\’t dnf. >.>
I guess I DNF if I’m offended by a book, or if I’m so bored that I can’t bring myself to pick it up and am reading everything else including cereal boxes instead to avoid it.
I do think I forget a lot of the details of past books when I move on to sequels, so I usually look up detailed synopsis posts online (who has time for re-reading?). I just read too many books to keep track of minor details!
Ha! Cereal boxes for sure are a better option sometimes. xD I wiiiiish I had time for rereading. I\’m actually planning to reread quite a few books this year, but, well. WE\’LL SEE.
So your answer to #7 is just perfect…. I’ve never heard of Recaptains before, but I totally pulled up the website before I finished reading that sentence because I JUST STARTED THE DREAM THIEVES and I couldn’t remember anything from The Raven Boys. As the page was loading, I switched back to your post. As I finished the sentence I saw that you specifically referenced Maggie Stiefvater, so I am just so happy! I’m almost finished with The Dream Thieves, but I’m still going to read her recap of The Raven Boys. Thank you!!!
I DID THAT TOO! FOR THE EXACT SAME BOOK! It was the Dream Thieves that made me find Recaptains. XD
OMG! Book series that don’t match are the worst!
I’m the same way with not putting books down. If I pick up a book to read, I finish it. Only rarely do I DNF it and move on to something else. But I’m always reading one book at a time.
My OCD tingles, it definitely does.
I found it very hard to concentrate on the post with all of the adorable dog gifs making me smile. *has an AWWWW moment*
I don’t know how you finish so many books! I DNF all the time, get distracted and start reading a different book, take a book back to the library then forget to check it out again, etc. It might be a problem.
Thank god I read the sad parts of books at night! I don’t know how I’ve managed to be so lucky over the years, but every gut-wrenchingly sad thing I’ve read/watched have happened in my room, in private. (And I cry over everything in books and TV shows.) I purposely try to finish books before I go to bed because I know there’s a good chance I’m going to sob into my pillow. I did watch “Pac-Man Fever” in plain view of everyone, but they were all oblivious to my silent tears. 😛
You are so so welcome for the puppy inundation. *nods*
It\’s bookish ADD! XD lol Ah, I understand, but it really tingles my OCD when I leave things unfinished. >.>
Oh, Supernatural makes me cry a LOT. Mostly from rage. I rage a lot.
Ooh, thank you! *grabby hands* I’ll get to this on Thursday, probably.
*flails at sight of Bruiser on your TBR stack* I hope you love it. I think I’ll have fun with a lot of these questions – like you, I’m kind of abnormal by some of these standards! Too broke to buy books xD
BRUISER IS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU. And also because I love Neal Shusterman and I really want to read everything he writes. AGAIN.
YES! You are very welcome Cait 😀
I have NO problems being the puppy -it’s sooo cute- and voting on polls… I love it! And I kind of have to ask… Armpit sex? WHAT?
I don’t have a lot of physical books, so my tbr of those isn’t that big either. I do have sooo many ebooks that I need to read.
I loved your post, you always manage to make me laugh! 😀
*STAMP OF APPROVAL*
Ughhhh. I can\’t even talk about that vampire book. >.> IT MAKES ME CRY.
Ebooks are fabulous. *nods* Particularly when they\’re cheaper than physical and don\’t take up so much space! XD
OH GOSH, those GIFS are so adorable. BUT YES YES YES! I can relate to most to all of these problems, especially the mismatching cover one and the one about rarely buying books. AND OH YES, recaps. Recaps save me from dying of confusion every single time. If a book doesn’t have a recap chapter, my brain dies a little inside.
And what even is armpit sex..
PUPPY LOVE. You are so so welcome. 😉
*whispers* You don\’t even want to know. Just…just don\’t read that vampire book EVER.
What do you mean I may “now” start laughing about your tbr pile promise (fib)? I’ve been wildly cackling away since the day you laid that seven or less hogwash on the table. About the mismatched covers/sizes, that is why I love boxed sets. I usually hold off on physical book purchases until they are all out by getting ebooks, or going to the library, and then I make my son buy them for me. XD No one borrows my books because I have had too many bad experiences. I would let my sister borrow books because she also worships books, but she loves Febreeze (do you have that in Australia?), and I hate the smell of it, so nope, I don’t want my books smelling like fake rainforest. I let my son read my books, but as soon as he moves out of the house that privilege is OVER!
I knoooow. You were laughing when I even MENTIONED IT. *sulks* No one believes in me. NO ONE.
Boxsets are my new first love. I so love my Percy Jackson boxset just because they all match, are the same edition, and are just beaaaautiful.
Ugh. I wouldn\’t want my books smelling weirdly either, so I understand that. My sister just bent the cover of my edition of Paper Towns AND I WAS MILDLY LIVID. *breaths deeply* I\’m okay. I\’m okay.
What made you want to read “Dorothy Must Die”? I picked it up at Target a couple of days ago and read the inside cover and it made me cringe! Like, what? Maybe it’s just because I’m used to the yellow brick road and all.
But still, I’d totally be willing to give it a chance!
I actually won it! But I do want to read it because I LOVE fairy tale retellings…and for no good reason I just haven\’t gotten around to it. >.>
I used to ALWAYS finish every book I read, even if I couldn’t stand it. But eventually I stopped, because if I’m not into the book I’d rather put it aside and read something I do love. Life’s short, after all. 😉
And I feel you on the covers thing! I can generally be okay with having them different sizes; like, I have a paperback copy of The Hunger Games but Catching Fire and Mockingjay are hardcover, and Graceling and Fire are paperback but Bitterblue is hardcover, and I’m pretty okay with that, especially since the designs all match. But when the designs DON’T match? UGH it drives me crazy! Like, I love the original hardcover design for Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan, but then for book 2 they redesigned the covers for the series and I was utterly bummed out because if I bought the rest of the series THEY WOULDN’T MATCH. GAH.
Also, with series, I may have already told you (think I did) but I generally reread the previous books so that I’m fully refreshed. Before reading BLLB I reread The Raven Boys and The Dream Thieves, and I’m currently rereading The Archived so that I can start the sequel, The Unbound. It takes time, but I usually feel it’s worth it because I can remember all the details of the first book(s) and get more out of the sequels that way!
LIFE IS SHORT! I wish my brain let me do this, but I just…ugh. I feel incredibly guilty. Although if it\’s a library book and I don\’t feel in the mood for it, I will send it back without reading. XD
Ohh, that\’s going to be my problem soon! I have Sinner and The Scorpio Races in hardcover but Blue Lily in paperback. WAH. And redesigns are a worry. Did you see how they redesigned the Fire & Flood covers? Me no likee. I sometimes wish they\’d leave what\’s not broken alone. -_-
Puppieeeeeees. ^_^ You misunderstand, Cait. YOU are actually the adorable puppy, which is why we love you so. XD
I NEVER dnf… Evar. Sometimes I get distracted and don’t finish it THEN, but it’s still on my to-read and I don’t consider it read until I’ve finished. I don’t usually START a book unless I’m fairly sure I’ll like it, or I have to. XD And yeah, my TBR is an entire bookcase. Because I get books for my birthday and Christmas and though I almost never buy newish books, I go to library sales and get large quantities of books for cheap because I am broke but cannot not buy books…
IT’S SO HARD TO PICK WHAT TO READ NEXT. I usually have a stack of the ones I’m MOST dying to read at this particular second. And also a stack, or more likely ebook list, of things I SHOULD read (like, by friends, or said I’d review, or won or something)… which normally makes me dig in my heels and not want to read it and put it off and then feel guilty. -_- I’M A BAD READER OKAY.
And I tend to read several books at once BECAUSE I READ SLOWISH AND CAN’T STAND NOT STARTING THE BEAUTIES. Like, this last weekend I was reading a library book (WHITE CAT! :D) and was also in the middle of rereading The Hobbit, reading a book for my bookclub, reading a loooong book that’s very slow going, and had just started a book a friend lent me. So that’s five at once, and it wouldn’t be super weird for me to be in an ebook at the same time as well. Because ebook, reread, slow read, fast read, library, and book-I’m-supposed-to-read are all different categories! XD
I also have a library addiction. Except I usually only go monthly. *cries plaintively* Mom says I have enough I can read at home but IT’S NOT THE SAME YA KNOW? O.O
REREADING IS SUCH A HARD CHOICE. I love rereading but don’t have time… There are some series I haven’t gotten to the rest because I have an awful memory and need to reread one, so I put it off because ALL THE NEW THINGS.
Also UNMATCHING BOOKS ARE THE GREATEST TRAGEDY ON EARTH.
*wags fluffy tail* I AM A CUTE PUPPY. IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.
Oh oh but I\’m similar in that I have some books I\’ve half read but I DO plan on getting back to them. I just DNF\’d Wicked, but, even in my review notes, I said I want to come back to it someday. Just not working for me right now.
YOU\’RE NOT A BAD READER. I do that. And library addictions? I HEAR YA. Guess who just brought home 8 new books. Gah. What even, Cait, what even. ALTHOUGH, to be fair, I\’ve got a lot of fairy tale collections which I only want to read one or two fairy tales from but the books are HUGE.
Oh GOD, that bit where the sequel comes out but you’ve forgotten everything from the previous books? GAH, that happened to me when I picked up the third book of the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy. I was so. SAD. and ASHAMED, that I had forgotten so many details of this amazing pearl of treasure that I hearted so much, so I chucked all other TBR pile worries out of the way, sat down, and READ THE FIRST 2 BOOKS. But I don’t usually do this – only if I REALLY love a series and would revel in going down memory lane.
I am a bad reader. 🙁
Ugh, that would be the worst…particularly when those books are HUGE. Like serious. >_< I\'ve got the last book to read on my TBR but but but I\'m half putting it off because I don\'t want the trilogy to end, and half because they\'re so darn huge.
I have always problems with giving up on books. I can’t! I keep thinking that maybe I stop reading just when the books is getting interesting and if I don’t go on HOW can I know that? The books I don’t like are so stressful, I tell you.
Also, I actually traded a book with a friend of mine because it didn’t match my others of the series and she didn’t care. I was so happy and she was looking at me like I was an alien, but now the books match. *smugness overflow*
I don’t know how you can make few questions so entertaining, you have a superpower and didn’t tell us!
I always feel it\’s MY fault if I want to give up on a book and I feel bad that I\’m letting down the author! >_< IT\'S TERRIBLE. But suffering through a book I don\'t like just makes me write a ranty review so…hehe. I would probably be doing everyone a favour if I just DNF\'d. XD
OH. I need a friend like that.
Erm… armpit sex? VAMPIRE armpit sex?? The images those statements are conjuring up are… disturbing! To make it worse, I just looked on Goodreads and I have The Hunt on my longlist-tbr! I… think I shall be rethinking this!
I really dislike my covers being mismatched, but what I my absolute HATE is the different book heights, especially within the same series! I had to add extra shelves into my bookcases, (gotta love IKEA!) and I have two shelves sized that will fit larger books, and all the rest are for the regular size books. It’s so FRUSTRATING when a new book in a series is in a larger height, and I have to either split up the series, or move all the books onto the bigger shelf – and the space on those two are non-existent! Between the two, I’ll suffer through mismatched covers in order to have my series all together on the one shelf!
I love all your gifs, but awwwww your last gif is so ADORABLE! 😀
THE ENTIRE BOOK IS DISTURBING. JUST DON\’T GO THERE. TRUST ME.
Ugh. Different book heights is just unfair. I wish publishers would keep things consistent. Obviously they do not have bookish OCD. -_- Yaaay, my bookshelf is from IKEA! I want to get another one but there\’s really not enough room. Gah. >.>
Okay let us just call this a LIBRARY APPRECIATION COMMENT. When you read massive amounts of books, isn’t it splendid that you don’t have to buy them all? The library is my home. I judge towns I visit by their libraries. I drool over photos of libraries on pinterest and plan trips around them. OKAY, sorry, that was probably too much. LIBRARY APPRECIATION COMMENT ENDING.
YES IT IS SPLENDID. Libraries save lives I\’m absolutely sure of it. AND ALSO THERE CAN NEVER BE TOO MUCH LIBRARY APPRECIATION SO GO FOR IT ANYTIME. XD XD
Yes! Yes to hating mismatching covers. I almost didn’t read The City of Glass because it didn’t match my copies of The City of Bones and Ashes. But I did, because back then it was a trilogy. Still prefer the original covers though! It takes an amazing series for me to continue buying mismatching covers. Maybe that’s why I like classics so much – publication houses generally have their own repetitive style 🙂
I\’m only missing one TMI book now and gah. I don\’t know whether to get a tall or a short one. MY COLLECTION IS SO RUINED.
lol love the gifs. I can’t help but be so jealous of you. I wish I had more books available. But now that I’ve settled into my new apartment I’m hoping to get a new library card!
Libraries are LIFE, honestly.
Crying in public … oh, that’s reaaally awkward. Luckily, I don’t usually read in front of other people. Usually. I had to go out after reading The Last Olympian and I was so jittery and mindblown, I could only laugh maniacally when my siblings tried to talk to me.
I just borrowed Dreams of Gods and Monsters and the cover is different from the first two books. Why? I thought the first two were much more unique.
In covers, I mean.
Maybe the cover is a different edition?? I know the UK and US have completely different covers. (TBH I prefer the US ones with the faces. *shrugs*)
I often forget what happened in previous books, and I’m not a re-reader… so I’ll either a) forge ahead and hope the events in the new book trigger my memories, or b) just not bother.
The time this was most problematic for me was when I was reading the His Dark Materials books. I read the first two books… and then the author took three years to get the third book out. By that time, I’d forgotten so much and I was completely lost. I ended up flailing around, utterly confused, and gave up after a few chapters. So disappointing.
(You’re not missing much by DNFing Elsewhere. I wish I’d DNFed that one. Ridiculous and badly written is right. And you probably didn’t even get to the inappropriate romance.)
Oh wow. Three years is a huge committment, right?! I\’m waiting on a Maggie Stiefvater trilogy finale…and I\’ve been waiting for FIVE YEARS. *cries* I have absolutely no idea what was in those first two books now.
Okay, phewf. XD I was so unimpressed with Elsewhere I cannot even. xD
In response to question 5: I’m not a big fan of……*takes deep breath and prepares for what people say* Divergent. *dodges bullets and arrows and other things people are throwing* Don’t get me wrong, I loved the whole premise and and everything, but I made it over halfway through and decided to stop. It’s one of my few DNFs. I vow to one day pick it back up and force my way all the way through it, but that is not this day.
The puppy gifs were adorable!!!!:)
I’ll join you in dodging, as I’m not a fan either. I like the premise too…but I just didn’t like any of the characters.
*throws things at both of you*
RAISE THINE SHIELDS, WARRIORS. I AM HERE WITH TOMATOES TO PEG AT YOU! *commences battle cry*
Hehe. Okay, I JOKE. You can not like Divergent. I shall not growl. 😉
This is a beautiful post. The puppies are beautiful. The books are beautiful. I HAVE FOUND SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOESN’T CRY ON THE OUTSIDE WHEN READING SAD BOOKS. My life is fulfilled. :p
We are vulcans together. HUZZAH!
I feel like I’m not a typical bookworm, either, sometimes. *hugs you* I’m very Vulcan when I read, although I do tear up in frustration while reading Cassandra Clare books. THE CHARACTERS JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND! D:
But I do have a bit of an obsession with buying books. I don’t go to my library that much because
a) I WANT THE BOOKIES
and
b) it doesn’t have the greatest and newest selection.
I think I have a long TBR, but I am [slightly] delusional. My shelf TBR is like four-five-ish books, and my Goodreads is 75-ish, which is quite short compared to other bookworm’s.
I also am quite social and outgoing, although I can be introverted at times. Let’s just say I can, and do love to, party, but I also love to read. I’m complicated.
YAY! We non-con-formative-bookworms must unite! *tackle hugs you back*
Giving books back is the WORST part of being a library rat like me. *sighs heavily* I just want to hide them and keep them all and…and, naughty me. xD I have some over-due fines right now because of this. Omg, I envy your TBR shelf. Mine is like 20 literally on my shelf. And then Goodreads? Pft. I won\’t even talk about it but it\’s nearing the thousands. 0.0
SOMEONE GET ME A CLONE.
I also can’t buy books…. I used to, but now I use the library (which is basically like buying a book since I constantly have to pay overdue fees)! I love this tag, I may have to do it!!
Oh oh ! I hope you do it!! They\’re fun questions. xD
1). I’m the same way – I prioritize by library due dates and based on recommendations from friends (*coughs* or bookish twins).
2). Ugh…Wicked was just…too politic-y. *sighs* *pats Cait on the back* I forced myself to finish it, and I promise you didn’t miss anything. 😉
5). AHHEEMMM! *nudge nudge* Ha…just kidding.
10). I don’t buy books either Cait. I live close to an amazing library, so I have the luxury of being able to use it and I take advantage of that. The books that I do buy are ones I’ve already read and absolutely adored. (Nothing worse than buying a book and then realizing you don’t like it, right?)
11). So excited to see what you think of these – especially Dorothy Must Die as I have a feeling you’d really like it. 😉
Great post and even better answers Cait! <3 AND OMG! You met Nico?!? Haha…looking forward to seeing what you think of him! 😉
BOOKISH TWINS ARE THE BEST PART OF READING AND BLOGGING AND AND AND EVERYTHING. I SAY. *whispers* Imma email you about doing something twinish.
You are braver than me with Wicked. xD I was sooo having a hard time and then when you said you didn\’t like it the rest of my brain just packed up and left. *sigh* Maybe I\’ll go back? But. Not this day. x)
Ugh, I do NOT want to spend hard earned money on a book I don\’t like!! So far I haven\’t and I mean to keep it that way. 😉
I love this post. You are so witty! I must find out more about you…new subscriber.
*waves wildly* HELLO KAREN!! Welcome to the crazy! (I swear I\’m not normally this late replying to comments. It\’s been a crazy week. XD)
See, I am your opposite. Even if I am passionately in love with a book I will put it down for anything. I’m weird like that, but there have only been a few occasions where I haven’t been able to put a book down, and I remember them because I sat myself down and read them and adored them long into the night because they were just that good.
The books that come to mind are Scarlet and Lady Thief, by A.C. Gaughen, because both of those grabbed me so quickly I couldn’t bear to put them down, ever. And beyond that? I was raised by a man who has plucked books from my hands and told me gently, “It will still be there in the morning.”
And it’s also there in like three weeks or six months or a decade whatever.
XD It’s also the reason why most library books don’t get read unless they’re graphic novels.
I like to devour books in one day….although, truthfully, that hasn\’t happened in a long time. I just LIKE to do it. Then I don\’t have to put them down, right?! XD
*raises hand* Oh, Oh, Oh, I didn’t like Red Queen either! I actually DNF’d it around 20%. It was just not for me, but of course everyone is loving it, but I’m happy to see that it’s not just me 🙂
OHHHH YAY WE MUST UNITE AS NON-FANS IN A FAN FILLED WORLD.
Haha you’re really NOT a typical bookworm, are you? XD Well, Overlords shouldn’t be typical, anyway. They have to stand apart! ;D
also I’M STEALING THIS TAG ‘CAUSE YOU INVITED ME TO! *grabs a handful of sentences and runs away*
THAT IS TRUE. I should\’ve thought of that. *stands apart magnificently*
Oh my good, I HAVE ALL OF THESE PROBLEMS. 😀
I think my biggest pet peeve is when books don’t match. I’ll look at them for years and years and it annoys me ALL THE FUCKING TIME, but I’m still not willing to spend all that money just for appearances. SO ANNOYING. I’d also hate only having sequels because it bothers me when I don’t have a complete series. Take for example Throne of Glass: I didn’t reaaally like it enough to continue, but that book looks so lonely on my shelf… And will I really hold out and not continue? Because another thing that REALLY really bothers me is not finishing a series, or even a single book. I’m trying to be better about it and just abandon books when they don’t hold my interest ’cause life is short and all that, but it’s SO HARD.
That puppy gif tho. It distracts me from all my bookworm problems. And the fact that apparently I have become a subject. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE.
IT IS SO ANNOYING. I SHALL JOIN YOU IN JUST BEING SO SUPER ANNOYED. *stamps foot* It\’s all the publisher\’s fault. if they\’d commit to a standard book size and one cover per book…Things would be a lot better.
MY PUPPY PLAN HAS WORKED!
I have SO MANY books that I’ve bought and haven’t read, because I too have a library addiction. Since I work there, it’s just too tempting to be shelving in the YA section and not take something…all those neon new stickers just beckon to me. There’s just too many interesting titles that can’t wait, so the bookshelf usually gets left behind. Although, this year I really want to read some of my own books, but I’m weak!
Also, this is a random question, but do you keep all your ARCs? Or what do you do with all of them after you’ve read them, especially the ones you didn’t like?
I want to work in the library someday. I think stacking books (and stealing them?? IDK. It sounds bad. But there\’s a book called The Book Thief and I think I could work with that) would totally be a good career choice for me.
Ohh, that is a good question and I have the most laziest answer in the world. Actually, the poor-bookworms answer. I keep them even though I hate a fair few of them because it costs me nearly $10 in postage to give them away. -_- I hate that! If postage wasn\’t so annoyingly expensive in Oz, I would have SO many more giveaways!!
I LOVE these answers! First of all, what kind of fresh hell is “vampire armpit sex”?! That is wrong on more levels than I can even list. Also, my TMI series looks EXACTLY like yours! The sizes get me more than the covers, honestly. Though I like that Allegiant cover about as much as I liked the book itself. :/
I disliked The Walled City, but I am not really shy about disliking stuff. We all have different opinions, otherwise reading other people’s blogs would be ridiculously boring! As for sequels, I try to read spoilery reviews on Goodreads, because I don’t have time to reread them. But now, I have bookmarked these Recaptains. Thank you for sharing, this seems like a much better idea than searching for spoilers on book 1!
I have actually bought people new copies of books they wanted to borrow. Because no, you cannot have mine. Sorry, but not really at all.
Thanks for tagging me! I am excited to do this one 🙂
YOU DON\’T WANNA KNOW ABOUT VAMPIRE ARMPIT SEX. TRUST ME.
Saaaadness. I admit the divergent series covers have never been my favourite, but, eh, I wish they matched at least. I have Four, as well, but it\’s the black edition. XD SERIOUSLY. IT\’S JUST DOOMED.
I tried searching spoilers on goodreads for some book (can\’t remember what exactly) and I could barely find any!! So these days, if it\’s a sequel, I try and talk a lot about spoilers on goodreads (with the spoiler tags of course. XD) just so I can remind myself later what happened!
HA! You are hilarious. xD New copies. Awww, but good bookworm, still getting people to read good books. *nods*
Gaaaah I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the Red Queen. It seems to be an exceptionally over-hyped book and its interesting to hear what people, who’ve actually read it, think. Teehee cool post as always, Cait!
In my humble opinion (hehe) I think it was a bit overhyped. >_< BUT HEY! I won\'t be too down on it!
My review should go up later this month. Mwha ha ha ha.
The different-covers-in-a-series thing gets me so bad. All of my Shadowhunter books are different sizes! And remember how some of the Harry Potter books were hardcover and some were paperback? That still hurts me.
I feel like *I’m* a failure of a bookworm because I *don’t* utilise libraries. I so should, but:
a) I usually can’t find the books I want to read at that exact moment in time. Someone else has it and I need to read it THEN.
b) my books usually have to be ordered from overseas when I buy them, so my local library will probably NOT have them on hand.
c) I prefer the smell (and feel) of new books to old books.
My TBR pile is actually kind of manageable at the moment. But I’ve been lent three books and I’m finally onto the last one. And *then* I can get back to my TBR pile. Some of the books? Have been there since March. Not quite as impressive as yours but still 🙂
GAH. I feel your pain. I only have 2 Harry Potter books and they\’re hardcover, old editions I found at a library sale. They\’re NICE. But I don\’t know where to find more to complete my series. o.O
My library actually buys a lot of new books (even when I request them!) so I know I\’m INSANELY lucky to have such a good library. *hugs library* I\’m utilising it while I can. hehe.
I am so jealous! Maybe I should start going to my local library, when I have one, make friends with the librarian so that they’ll buy books for me too!
I want to get all the new editions of Harry Potter, but I have too many memories attached to the originals!
Cait, I promise you, your tbr is nothing compared to mine. I have an entire physical shelf full of unread books, and a whole Kindle full of unread books, too. AND YET I STILL BUY BOOKS EVERY TIME I GO TO THE BOOKSTORE. Oh gosh, this feeling of guilt. *drowns* But yeah, I choose books the same as you do, too, but now most of my ARCs are way past their released date, so I have more freedom to choose what books I want to read next. :B (*more guilt*)
I find it interesting that you never finished The Hunt! It was actually one of my first ARCs ever (oh, those good ol’ days…), so I felt obliged to finish it, but I did end up loving it in the end. Can’t remember much of the story now, though, and I don’t feel like finishing the series, haha. I always try to finish a book if I’m over 50% done with it. Otherwise, into the DNF shelf it goes!
YOU DIDN’T LIKE RED QUEEN?
NO — EVEN WORSE — YOU DIDN’T LIKE SEA OF MONSTERS???
Cait. I don’t understand. I can’t bow down to you with a clear conscience now. TRUST: BETRAYED.
But seriously, though — such a shame that you didn’t enjoy them both. Red Queen has been getting so much hype, and I’m in the middle of reading it now (still not past the first chapter, so I don’t really have an opinion yet), so I can only cross my fingers and pray that I’ll enjoy it more than you. >< Have you read the rest of the Percy Jackson books? Because the last one is the BEST. So I hope that even though you didn't like SoM, you'll continue with the series!
And I can totally relate — NEWLY BOUGHT BOOKS SIT ON MY SHELF FOR AN AWKWARDLY LONG TIME, TOO. I mean, people would expect me to dive straight into a book I just got, especially if I was really looking forward to it, but nope. I defy all expectations and leave it on my shelf for later… which is pretty much never, because my reading pile never seems to go downnnn. I feel so embarrassed sometimes about this, lol.
Great post, lovely! <3
YOU SHOULDN\’T FEEL GUILTY. You are adopting homeless books, yes?? SO IT IS A GOOD THING. YOU ARE A RESCUER! YOU SHOULD GET A MEDAL! A REWARD! LIKE….MORE BOOKS!! *flails because books are beautiful*
I usually go at least 50% if I want to DNF, but with The Hunt I felt zero obligation because it was a library book. So I think I only got to 20%. 🙁 So maybe I did quit too early, but it just wasn\’t working for me.
WELL, CALM YOURSELF, MUPPET. I didn\’t HATE Sea of Monsters! I gave it 3-stars! *nods* And besdies I just finished the 4th one and jfadklfad I LOVED IT SO MUCH. I\’m about to read the last one! Then onto his second series! BECAUSE THAT\’S HOW I ROLL. xD It\’s actually my \”Rick Riordan Year\” so I\’m trying to read all his books. >.> Because I like big goals.
Yesssss. Omg. I really need to stop requesting things on Netgalley and borrowing books, because I have shelves full of books I own and do not read. Sometimes it’s the death knell for a book for me to own it because it’s almost a guarantee I will not read it soon.
Haha, I’m totally okay with being an adorable puppy minion. XD
I almost never cry over a book. I’m pretty sure I teared up once or twice, but I’m not the crying sort. Even the Fault in Our Stars only got me to feel sort of misty but no actual crying. My friend find me perturbing because of that, since she had bawled for hours while reading that book.
OMG. I thought I was the only one who DNF Wicked by Gregory Maguire. It seemed like a cool retelling, but it just wasn’t for me. 😐
I hear so many good things about the Diviners and Gallagher Girls. I need to read them too…. Soon books, soon!
Netgally is temptation. *whispers* I banned myself from it. xD Actually I can only read books on my iPod and it sucks so badly (the screen is so small!) so that keeps me off NetGalley too. 😉
I don\’t think I teared physically for TFIOS. I DEFINITELY was bawling on the inside. But I was kind of in shock too!! I DID tear up actually for Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is weird. xD I must\’ve been feeling super emotional that day, hehe.
Ohhh, no, there are a lot of us who didn\’t like Wicked. PHEWF. I feel better about it too. >_< It just…no. Didn\'t work for me at all.
I AM a goopy soft puppy! 😛
Ooh, I need to read Stiefvater’s descriptions of her books!!
You do. It\’s HILARIOUS.
Puppy GIFs!!! Gimme any cute lil’ animal GIFs and I will be your minion.
I don’t mind height/size as much as covers THAT DON’T MATCH. 8-/
I also used to finish every single book I started, but nowadays, if I’m just absolutely not feeling a book by about 80-100 pages in, I’ll set it down and pick it up again in the future. If I make it halfway, though, I’ll force myself to finish it, just because by then I’ve invested a considerable amount of time and THE BOOK HAD BETTER HAVE A GOOD ENDING TO MAKE UP FOR IT. I rarely DNF books, though; I’ll just slog through and give it 2 or 3 stars and admit that I didn’t really care after a while.
In terms of rereading prequels or not to refresh your memory, I find it varies for me depending on the series. Sometimes I remember things and other times I literally cannot remember who anyone is or what happened.
Great post, Cait! Puppy GIFs puppy GIFs!!! 😀
Covers that don\’t match are terrible. *cries* I will forever mourn my Divergent collection.
I tryyyy to get to at least halfway if I\’m thinking about DNFing a book. I feel a little better because I feel like I really gave it a good try. But hey, life is short, and if a book isn\’t working for us, then we shouldn\’t feel so guilty, right?!
WAAAAAH you little killjoy Cait! 😛 I just wrote a post on my most anticipated reads of 2015 and everyone in the comments seems to love it and THEN YOU COME ALONG YOU LITTLE PUMPKIN.
xD why didn’t you like it though? 🙁
and ughhh yes thankfully I cry on the inside – my facial expressions tell all however..
And yes, the problems of disliking a novel a lot of people loved..
Which one?? Red Queen?? I AM SORRY. >_< I just thought it was too much like Red Rising meets The Selection. Not original enough for m?? I\'M FUSSY. JUST IGNORE ME.
I REALLY hope when you’re talking about SoM you’re talking about the movie (LOL…). But that’s fine if you don’t like it. I hope you still give the Percy Jackson series a chance because I loved it and I have a serious crush on Percy.
I’m the same as well where I don’t buy books. I get my books from the library book sale and I scrounge around for the best quality books. If I do buy books it has to be from a series I love, something I want super badly and/or if I don’t have it, I’ll die of longing.
Hhaha! I actually thought the movie was an improvement on the first. -_- At least it was funnier, whereas the first was just a catastrophe of acting AND plot. But yes. I\’M SAD. The book just didn\’t do anything for me. BUT I\’VE SINCE READ BOOKS 3 AND 4 AND AM MARGINALLY IN LOVE. SO IT\’S OKAY!!
Thanks for tagging me Cait, Queen of the World that you are I feel humbled that you would choose such a lowly subject (sorry, puppy) to do the tag! XD
Ooh, Recaptains sounds awesome (they are doing a great and inspirational thing) – I sooo need it, especially for series. I hate it when you can’t remember what happened in a book, at all!
You have many books on the TBR BUT. Don’t worry (there are bigger ones out there, and there are certainly even huger piles on Goodreads)…and you know what? You’ll get through them all.
I DEFINITELY get what you mean about how all the unread books that you own get pushed to the back of the list (good thing we don’t buy books that often, huh?). Library books, borrowed books (I borrow too many books for my own good) and request books do often take precedence. Which sucks. I mean…SO MANY BOOKS. And you own them! It’s a bit like loving someone else’s puppy instead of your own… 🙁
SO GONNA DO THIS. (I’m pumped. Too many #bookproblems indeed!). 😀
YOU ARE A CUTE PUPPY.
Ugh, not remembering last books in a series is my life\’s pain. It ALWAYS happens. Especially if I start series that aren\’t all out yet. >.>
I do hope I\’ll get through them all. *gulps* Although I do struggle to read and write at the same time, so eeek! I need to devour some of my TBR before I start editing again.
Okay… I seriously have to give you like a hundred bazillion trillion (yup, exactly that many!) creds for not DNF’ing books. Seriously?! How do you even do that?! You have wayyyyy more willpower than I, and you must be a super fast reading ninja type. I only read 2-3 books a week, and the majority of what I read are audiobooks. So it takes me usually a week to get through a book. I think that’s a mixture of being a slower reader and only have a small amount of time to read each day. That being said, I dnf A LOT!! Like, a lot a lot. If I’m not into the book and it’s not keeping my attention, I put it down. I just feel like there’s so many books I want to read, why should I waste my time on a book I’m not enjoying? Now, this also means that MOST of my reviews and book ratings are 3-5 stars. If I’m hating a book enough to rate it a 1 or a 2, I give up on it and never rate or review it. I feel it’s not fair to rate/review a book that I didn’t complete, so I just pretend it never existed. It’s just not for me. The end. Weird? Yeah, probably. LOL!
Anyway, I’ll stop rambling now. You’re like my reading speed ninja idol. I wish I could read fast so that I could read ALL THE BOOKS!!! <3
I don\’t know! I have bookish OCD or something and I really really struggle to have unfinished projects/books lying around. >.> I NEED EVERYTHING TIED UP WITH A BOW. *sigh*
99 comments! Furiously scrolling down….oooo I’m number 100 by the way. I demand a cookie…or maybe you should steal a cookie from me for being late to the party.
I do not reread anymore! Hah I just wrote a babbling post about forgetting what was in a previous book and yes you are weird because you don’t buy books. Weird weird weird lol
I WILL STEAL YOU A COOKIE FROM THE DARK SIDE BECAUSE THAT\’S HOW WE ROLL.
Weird and poor. When I rule the world and steal the universe, I shall have all the books. It\’ll be like my tax.
Wow I relate to some of these on so many levels ahahha, I will say I rarely cry when reading so I probably don’t have to worry about that one! Such a fun post (:
YAY! Another non-crier! We are the dry minority. xD
Such a fun tag! It’s fun to see how other bloggers are just like you – or wildly different. I’m not a book buyer either, so you have company on that one!
WOOT! I don\’t feel so alone now! XD
First and foremost, I must say THANK YOU for introducing me to Recaptians!!! I never have time to reread things when I want to and this is horrible because I forget things. Also, I totally agree: The Maggie Stiefvater recaps were amazing =D
I also have a problem with DNFing books. I’d much rather finish a book though sometimes, I stop reading something only to come back to it months later. That’s not actually DNFing – I mean, it got finished eventually. Wicked was a hard one for me to finish too. I didn’t like it for exactly the reason you mentioned. The politics of Oz just wasn’t super interesting. I had hoped it’d be more like the play but I was completely wrong there.
Yay for none cry-ers! I always feel like I’m the only one who doesn’t cry over books. Though A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness got to me. Not cool, Patrick Ness, not cool…
I’m so jealous of your awesome library borrowing skills. I’d borrow books from my local library if they all didn’t supremely suck. I borrow books from work though every once and a while so that counts for something. But I also have a book collecting problem (my mom calls it book hoarding but pssh, I’m not a hoarder =/ ) then my TBR pile might sit and gather dust for years before I read them all.
By the way, perfect use of adorable puppy gifs =)
Oh the Maggie Stiefvater recaps are LIFE. I just read them to giggle. x) YAY! Nice to know I\’m not the only one who diiiiies at dnf\’ing. I haven\’t seen the play of Wicked, but, well, ugh. I was just so bored. I was at least hoping it\’d be narrated by Elphaba but IT WASN\’T. I was so tired of it all I just couldn\’t even make myself pick it up. >.> Maybe one day I\’ll try again??
Omg. I will never recover from Manchee.
I am so so lucky to have such a good library. I KNOW! *flails*
IT\’S NOT HOARDING. IT\’S ADOPTING. We can\’t let those little books grow up lonely and cold in the big big world, right?
I’m actually a little bit lazy when it comes to reading sequels – because if there has been a film released of said series I will just watch the film again! If not, I tend to read some reviews online of the old book. BECAUSE i don’t want to have to re-read the previous book because I am too eager to read the new one. So synopsis of the book online instead!
Also I hate it when I start reading a book and end up hating it, I try so so hard to finish it, only a handful of times I have given up. Sadly, one was JK Rowling’s Casual Vacancy, I just couldn’t do it. I was bored to tears.
Angelica x
GIFS ARE ADORABLE AND CUTE. And I have one thing to say. If you’ve been exceeding your reading goal, WHY DON’T YOU INCREASE YOUR READING GOAL HUH? HUH? Yeah that’s right hahahaha. Just kidding do what you want 😛
Haha, from here I can already see we ahve different ways of coping, Cait, but that’s what makes us special in our own ways, I guess 😉 😉 😉 For ONE, I DNF books all the time. If something makes me angry, I just can’t stomach any more of it, unless it’s an ARC then I’ll have to read it all the way through to write a review, and even then, there are extreme cases where I leave myself hanging FOR THE BETTER GOOD. haha. And I get BOOK SLUMPS all the freaking time, it’s insane. If you look at my Currently Reading shelf on Goodreads, I have, like, 10 books on there, 9 of which I havent finished yet and of which I started last year. O.O I’m not a good reader am I… ._.
Oh I know the different book sizes thing just makes me upset lol! I’ve heard the same about Wicked, although don’t let that put you off the musical because it is AMAZING. HAHAHA I laughed so hard at the armpit sex, that just sounds super disturbing. I have a massive book hoarding problem too and need to clear the books from my shelves that I am never going to read because my tastes have changed.
THIS POST=PERFECTION.
Yes! I feel you! Another problem I have is when I’m reading in public and something funny comes up. If I smile, then people are gonna think I’m reading about sex. But if I laugh, everyone looks at me like I’m weird. Especially if the place is quiet!
YAY! More tags… I LOVE WHEN YOU DO TAGS! I just love all your posts because I am a good little minion.
1. I rarely get to read the books I buy for myself. Probably why my number of unread owned books is currently in the hundreds right now.
2. ARMPIT SEX!?! WHAT?!?! I’m sorry, I know you said not to ask, but how can you mention armpit sex and then not explain that. Now you are making me want to read this book, that could be completely awful and painful to read, just to get some semblance of an idea of what you mean. Hopefully it’s not exactly what it sounds like.
3. I HATE IT TOO! At least I am not the only one.
4. I usually exceed it too. YAY! Not by 220% though… >.<
5. Exactly, I can always hunt down someone who shares my feelings. I have to do that for a lot of books… I'm usually always feeling like that one person who dislikes it, until I go hunting for others like me. Then I get them to join my cult… or something like that.
6. I sob from almost the beginning of HP7 right to the end every time I reread. I have too many emotions. I could happily give some up.
7. I have tried Recaptains before and I found it partly useful. But it only tells me what a book was about. It never really gets me to remember exactly how I felt about it or how connected I was to the characters. It requires rereading.
8. I think that's as politely as you could possibly put it. Overlords don't do nice!
9. I don't either. I like to stick with a book. And only read one book at a time.
11. I've owned books for years and never read them, embarrassing but true. I also buy books with no intention of getting to them any time soon. OOOOPS!
I have done this tag as well and it was a lot of fun! I read methodically really, so my oldest books get read first. But it means I rarely have the latest releases on my blog… oh, and I try my best not to DNF books as well, but every now and again a rubbish one will slip in and I can’t finish it… Hehe, lovely way to tell people no to borrowing books xD Oh, and as for reading slumps I have never had one too! I read, like you, three in a go. A paperback and two ebooks.
THIS. Posts like this are the reason why I obsess over your blog. *hugs*
I answered these questions on my blog after reading your post!
I recently tried to read Wicked and just… couldn’t. It makes me sad because I’d been marvelously excited for 2+ years for it and got a pretty copy (second hand, admittedly, but that is not the point) and it just was not me. This makes me very faintly concerned, because I want to see the musical so much and love what I’ve heard of it! And the songs are so good!
I think you and I should start a club for people who don’t cry when they read books. Not really, because that sounds exclusive and I would want everyone to join in, but the most notable book I have ever cried in, and possibly the first, was the 5th HP book. I was a little bit of a mess, and this was when I knew the story and everything from audio. Ah. Good times.
