I’m absolutely beaming right now because it’s time to share the cover for The Boy Who Steals Houses!
We are coming ever closer to the April 4th release date (70 days to go, to be specific) and I’ve been doing exciting things like writing acknowledgements (still a surreal experience!!) and seeing page proofs and excitedly awaiting the moment when I get to hold a physical copy of TBWSH. Which is, arguably, the very best moment of all.
But the cover…!!

Preorders do so much good for new small authors (like meeee) and bonus, the book is usually a bit cheaper before release day! If you’re in the USA, your best option is Book Depository! They do free shipping too. Amazon US will get it in, but so far only the kindle is up for preorder. I think this is because I’m not published in the US. But who would know!

🗝 The Boy Who Steals Houses is not a sequel to A Thousand Perfect Notes.
They’re set in the same universe though!! There may or may not be a wonderfully placed cameo or mention or two.
🗝 It’s 360 pages!
Compared to ATPN’s 288…so someone got long-winded ha ha. Although, as I was reading through for the 180th time and crying over copy-edits, I pledged to myself never again to write over 300 pages. So much more to edit. Why do people write 100K books. Why…why would they.
🗝 The keys on the cover mean things.
So many things…
🗝 There’s a lot going on in this book and I’m very proud of it.
It has homelessness and big messy families. It has anxiety and autism. It’s set in summer, so there’s popcorn and mangoes and a soft yellow pocket of happiness before everything goes really bad. It has brothers with a very intense relationship. It has a very soft and tentative romance (between a Hufflepuff and a Slytherin). It is a genderbent modernised Goldilocks retelling. There is banter and snark…and also tears and bloody knuckles. When I say “I’m going to make you laugh AND cry…” dude, I mean it.
It is dark and light and about being lost and found.
It’s about looking for something and stealing the impossible.
And there is a heck tonne of brownies in it because I drafted it for NaNoWriMo 2016 and I was home alone for a week and brownies is one of the few things I can bake. So like. There sits the truth of my inspiration.
🗝 I’m never going to get over this whole AM AN AUTHOR thing.
It’s just my dream, ok?! The process isn’t all perfect and I still have so many wishes I’m desperate to come true. But just !! knowing people read and enjoy my work, having publishers and an extraordinary agent who root for me, and being able to unravel the stories that make my heart beat faster…I’m so so grateful.

That is an awesome looking cover :D. I pre-ordered The Boy Who Steals Houses a few days ago at Bol.com (Dutch webshop I often use). I’m super excited to be reading your book :D!! Thanks also for the information about how many pages the book has, I love to know that kind of stuff. I’m planning on participating in a read-a-thon in April, all about reading books by autistic authors (@AutisticAuthors on Twitter), so I think I’ll try to read your book for that week as that would be fitting :). I don’t often read retellings to be honest (because a lot are YA fantasy and not YA contemporary and I have a preference for YA contemporary) but I think I’ll like this one :). I loved A Thousand Perfect Notes so I think I’ll like this one a lot too :). I look forward to the anxiety and autism representation in TBWSH and the story sounds good! I’m excited :D!!

Something funny, I didn’t realize until a couple weeks ago that A Thousand Perfect Notes is a genderbent Cinderella until a friend mentioned it. Of course it made so much sense . . . but still changed how I saw the book. I can not wait to read this one!

And I love that you based it off a classic fairy tale – that’s really cool and not something that’s very common so that’s great!! I’d love to see a twisted version of Aladdin! With tricksy genies instead of s kind one and majestic palaces and enchanted carpets that can have personalities, and sneaky spies and twisting plots and all that good stuff 😂😂

aahhhhhHHHHHHH LOOK AT THAT MYSTICAL COVER. You really hit the jackpot with the cover designers. Even if I didn’t know anything about you, I would totally pick up both of your books at a bookstore based on the cover alone. And I love the yellowness of the back cover!!! So few books are actually yellow and it makes me sad because it looks so cool when used right.

That’s a gorgeous cover, and I cannot wait for my copy to arrive. I’ve been needing a book with a key on the cover. (Loooong story, involving a bookshelf scavenger hunt I tried once. But anywho. Long story short – I ended up not doing that scavenger hunt ’cause I couldn’t freakin’ find a single book on my shelf with a key. Even my copy of The Secret Garden failed me.)
As for a fairy tale needing genderswapped in the modern era? Howabout the Little Mermaid? That would be interesting. (Boy in love with this celebrity girl. It’d be just like a Cinderella except #nohappyending. JOY!)
(Also, in line with retellings, I was doing some photoshoots on Bookstagram when I got my copies of the Rooglewood collections a few weeks ago, surrounding each collection with other books on my shelf that retold the same fairy tale. And, of course, I put ATPN down with the Cinderellas. And one of my followers about flipped out when she realized that it was a Cinderella. So, yep.)

Cait! How does it feel to know you will now have TWO books out in the world?? I think it must feel very amazing, huge congratulations! I think being an author is weird and harder than I expected but also really wonderful too, at moments like seeing a book cover for the first time or holding a book for the first time especially!

AHH THANK YOU, POPPY!! And honestly it’s terrifying and surreal because I want to keep being able to publish SO SO badly !! and so much depends on things outside my control so afjdkasld I am a mess of nerves and gratefulness for the opportunities I’ve had!
urgh, I totally get what you mean… I am awaiting things at the moment that are all so beyond my control and it drives me CRAZY I can’t just have another book scheduled to come out already. And things move so SLOW. I was always under the impression that one contract would make the next one super easy and simple, but I’m definitely finding out that is not the case and everything is decided book by book!! Blurg!
