It’s my tour stop with MTMC Tours to talk about Hunt For the Lost by Brian Anderson!
This is the sequel to Rise of the Shadow, book 1 of The Conjurers series, which I reviewed earlier this year. Sequel time 🙌🏻 This is the kind of fun MG book that tosses you into a portal fantasy world that’s a bit like Alice on Wonderland meets Oz, with fun and zany characters, magicians and con artists, with a big baddie villain to defeat and lot so clues for our intrepid heroes to follow. I thought I’d do a little double review for books 1 & 2 🤗 with some aesthetics.
Also head over to my instagram for the INTL giveaway too!
The series launches in Rise of the Shadow with by introducing us to Alex and Emma, siblings left in the care of their disagreeable uncle (who is definitely keeping secrets) after the disappearance of their parents. Emma is sure their parents will come home someday, and she’s a dreamer and quite soft. Alex, on the other hand, is the science-minded factual younger brother, who has faced facts that their parents are probably dead and is ready to escape from their uncle’s house. But things don’t go to plan when they get attacked by evil magicians from a portal realm and end up escaping into the world of Conjurian with the help of Pimawa (a talking rabbit, destined to be their guide and protector) and discover the mysteries their parents left behind for them to solve.
Emma and Alex are fun siblings to read about because they’re like chalk and cheese, and definitely fight a lot but love each other deeply. After being flung into Conjurian, their adventures divide and then end up on quite different paths that meet up at the end. There are monsters to fight and magicians to escape. In this world, illusionists have true magic and only pretend to be fake. Rabbits can talk. There are villains made of bones and monsters here to chase you. And there is the truth about Alex and Emma’s parents to uncover — maybe they weren’t simple archeologists after all. Emma and Alex might not have all the answers, but they better find out: because a lot of people are after them.
Book 2 begins right after book 1’s massive cliffhanger! Welcome to Hunt for the Lost, where the siblings are keen to find the Eye of Dedi before the bad guys do, because whoever owns it will have the power to change Conjurian forever. In this book, Alex is really focused on finding the magic stone and Emma is furiously dedicated to defeating the monsters who attacked them. Emma also has a lot of character development in this one! She’s tired of being seen as the useless dreamy sister, who needs to be protected and is ultimately no one’s hero. She’s having the adventure of the life time — AND NOT REALLY HAVING A GOOD TIME HERE. So Emma definitely takes charge of her own fate which is amazing 🙌🏻
Meanwhile Alex is pretty focused on his own mission and is so dedicated to his path, he misses what’s going on with Emma. They travel to Pimawa’s home town too, and meet up with all the other Jimjarians. So we get tons of new settings + learning more about the super loyal rabbits who serve the magicians 🥺👌🏻 There are more clues to unravel and follow too!
This is definitely an excellent series for younger readers who love magic, who are dreamers and puzzle-solvers, who are ready to fight monsters and also outsmart double-crossing adults. They’re quick, light reads, and lots of fun!
