When it comes to hyped YA books, I have absolutely no standards and yes please I want to read them all.
I mean, I want to read all the YA books hence I plan to live forever. This will work out I’m sure. (The sacrifices happening in my neighbourhood MEAN NOTHING. IT’S FINE.) I know a lot of bookworms are cautious of overhyped books and crave the smaller elusive titles…and, like, I want those too. And the hyped ones. I have an actual problem but do I look like I’m stopping. No.
Now some hyped books…not that great oops. But the majority I enjoy! I actually have a list as to why that is, so here, I will share it with you though you neither wanted nor asked for it.
You’re welcome.
IT TURNS THE WORLD INTO A BOOK CLUB!
Which is actually super awesome, I am so here for this. I love being able to see other bloggers talk about a book and say “Oh yeah I’ve read this too!” It actually brings a sense of community together because oH HI STRANGER, we have something to talk about!
I’D SECRETLY LOVE TO BE A FAMOUS/HYPED AUTHOR. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have no shame it’s…yeah just no shame. I am also an overachieving ambitious Slytherin here and cursed to be equally split believing I’m a genius and a disaster. (DISASTER GENIUS???) So when I see a newfoundling author who’s just broken out of the damp deep forests and crawled to the surface and their book is hyped?! I’m just massively happy for them!! I will cheer! Karma, are you listening!
THEY MIGHT BE HYPED BECAUSE THE AUTHOR IS AN OLD FAVOURITE.
Aka — I know I’ll like this one anyway! So often times it’s a 97% chance of a good read!
HYPING AND ANTICIPATING BOOKS IS GOOD FUN.
Basically if I have a book = eh, I’m not so enthused. If I don’t have a book and it’s still coming out = THEN I WANT IT SO SO BADLY AND WILL TALK ABOUT IT FOREVER. Thanks, brain.
MORE BOOKS ARE HYPED THESE DAYS TO CHEER ON DIVERSE AUTHORS!
I love love this. Heck yes to bestseller lists being dominated by POC women and queer lead characters! It’s about TIME. I am so here to hype minority voices.
Top Ten Tuesday: Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype
1. THE RAVEN CYCLE BY MAGGIE STIEFVATER
Fun storyyyyy….I LIKED THIS BEFORE IT WAS FAMOUS. I feel like that is the most hipster thing to say about a hyped book and I probably should be ashamed. Yet shhhh I love the Raven Cycle so so much. Just go see my bookstagram account. If a photo doesn’t have a hidden Raven Boy in it, IS IT REALLY MY PHOTO??? I’m so obsessed afjdkslafd. Everything Maggie Stiefvater writes is perfect and there is no other opinion.
2. SIX OF CROWS BY LEIGH BARDUGO
All the bird books apparently! I genuinely did distrust this book at first because (1) I heard it had 3989 narrators and I can’t even remember my own middle name half the time so help, and (2) I didn’t actually love Shadow & Bone so much? It was good! But it didn’t light up my world. I hate the Darkling. Fite me (Actually don’t. I am fragile…) But anyway, this is the duology of LIFE and I will level cities for my precious, murderous, often psychopathic Kaz Squad.
3. ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE BY BENJAMIN ALIRE SÁENZ
Sometimes I take a nap after writing out this title. (Also as someone who has a 4 word title for my own book and suffers trying to squeeze it into my twitter bio…I TAKE MY HAT OFF TO THIS AUTHOR.) Anyway. My actual first impression of this book was: “No I do no understand the hype??” Then I hit around like page 150 and…omg…no no I’m not absolutely in love and just feeling my heart leak out my chest that’s SOMEONE ELSE. It’s just a really good story about depression and not understanding yourself. I love it. I have reread it many times.
4. LEGENDARY (CARAVAL #2) BY STEPHANIE GARBER
My absolute DARLING. I still am thinking of this and still am absolutely hopelessly starstruck with the idea that I might write something as gorgeous as this someday. I just !! I am !!! in love !! The schemes and the writing and the viciously beautiful characters and everyone lying and trying to murder each other…but immediately panicking and crying if they like, ya know, succeed. Bless.
5. THE GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE BY MACKENZIE LEE
I appreciate the length of the title for this one SOLELY because it’s ridiculously pretentious — aka, summarises Monty so much. I LOVE MONTY. He is an absolute clueless goat and would fall in love with a lamppost. He is the definition of the meme, “Move I’m gay” and everything about this book is PERFECT.
(I also read this one really really early!! And was suffering waiting for everyone to catch up!)
6. THE HATE U GIVE BY ANGIE THOMAS
Which is so wildly famous I’m just in awe!?? IT DESERVES IT. This is one of the stories that has, no joke, touched millions and thousands and if any book deserved to be hyped — yes it’s THUG. Woooooow. It broke your heart, made you laugh in places, and called for change. I think it’s been on the NTY bestseller list since release day. Can we appreciate that for a moment?!?
7. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN BY JOHN GREEN
Obviously all John Green’s books are hyped buuuuut, this one was particularly special for me. It is both a love and hate letter to the all-consuming spiral that is anxiety (specifically OCD although it wasn’t named in the book…and a ton of this just relates to anxiety disorders in general). I actually am frustrated with how people mock/dismiss John Green’s books. Anyway, I love TFIOS and I love Turtles and I love pretentious teens who use big words and philosophy because these kids exist. (Literally my sister and I were that kind of teen.)
8. LORD OF SHADOWS (THE DARK ARTIFICES #2) BY CASSANDRA CLARE
Again, Cassandra Clare, is the kind of automatically-hyped author who just has to breathe and we are all “HYPE HYPE HYPE”. But this was…this was magnificent. And horrible. I’m still traumatised ajfkdsla and literally am going to brEAK my mind when book 3 comes out. But forever in love with her work because (1) she features disabled characters !!!! which shouldn’t be as unusual as it is, and (2) she cares about ALL kinds of diversity, and (3) Magnus Bane is just a pile of glitter on legs. Goals.
9. STRANGE THE DREAMER BY LAINI TAYLOR
I still am debating whether this is YA…but I waaaaant to talk about it because IT’S GORGEOUS INSIDE AND OUT. The hype was wild for it and I feel it’s even wilder for Muse of Nightmares?!? All deserved. Laini Taylor is actually the nicest ever and talented and has pink hair. We can only aspire to be this great afjdsla. *
* Lowkey have become her eternal fan because she said congrats to me on my book’s release day. (SOBBING) FOREVER QUEEN. I’M SO EASILY BOUGHT. WILL SUPPORT FOREVER. (SOBBING)
10. THE CRUEL PRINCE BY HOLLY BLACK
Ok but HOLLY BLACK IS THE FAE QUEEN AND DESERVES LOVE FOR ALL HER BOOKS! I also (smug moment) liked her older books before The Cruel Prince went wild. Although this is definitely my favourite of her work! It’s as wickedly magical and dangerous as it is viciously gorgeous. I adore Cardan and Jules because they’re relationship isn’t a swoony romance. It’s basically: “Can we wickedly manipulate each other to get to the throne, stab each other, and maybe just kiss????”
You know the quote: “In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him” by Orson Scott Card??? THIS IS IT.
I think it’s probably fair to say that you should trust the hype!!
I tend to wait for reviews to come out (such as your fabulous own reviews) before buying a hyped book, but even then it can take me forever to read (whoops!) I only read To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before a few months ago and I’m pretty sure I was the last person to discover how amazinggggg it was! I love all of these soooo much and I can’t wait for The Hate U Give the film, I hope it’s as good as the book!
Gorgeous post as always Hun 🙂
Grace Louise || http://www.gracelouiseofficial.blogspot.co.uk/
I seem to have good luck with it right!?😂I mean there are plenty where it doesn’t work for me, but the majority of the time: I LOVE.😂
Ahhh I’m so happy you liked Lara Jean! Are you going to see the Netflix movie?! And THUG is going to be amazing and totally destroy us (in the best possible way) and I think it’s such a timely story to tell. 😭❤️
I am back to reading books after a year or two so can’t say much about the hyped books. I think it also depends if the book is available in your area and if you can get your hands on those. I like your post. Actually every post.
Aww, thanks for reading, Shanza! And yes of course reading any type of books depends on where you live and if you can get it…
I’m often wary AND hyped for hyped books which is kind of weird but also like…I want it to be as good as they say but what if it’s not??? What use will be all the hype and excitement???
We share many hyped books!! The Raven Cycle, which I literally read on a whim and best. Decision. And six of crows– was pressured to read by my friends when it came out but I’m so glad I read it after crooked kingdom came out so I could read them both and just…you know, enjoy it fULLY??
Also ANYTHING BY CASSANDRA CLARE I WILL PROBABLY READ JUST ARGHH I LOVE HER WRITING.
And I only read a little bit of turtles all the way down but it was absolutely anxiety inducing?? I mean that as in like he GOT how thought spirals went and just am really appreciative of that fact. And fun fact: back when the fault in our stars was the big deal I was a wee teen (still am- just not as wee tiny) and borrowed the book from my cousin and found it boring and pretentious… But then years later I read it again and FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. So yes that happened XD
Also I really like Holly Black’s writing it is equivalent to chocolate with those exploding firecracker things in your mouth in a lot of ways for example 1) it is delicious and fun to devour 2) it is packed with unexpected action. I’ve read the Curse Workers series but the Cruel Prince is on my tbr. Also the quote that you wrote at the end seems like such a nice prompt for a story.
Also I really like the aesthetic of this blog post in particular– your graphics and your pictures are very very nice and so. On. Point. All of the pictures that you post are fun and colourful, but I think my favourites that I have seen on your blog are definitely these ones.
Also was that a viOLIN WOW so FANCY I am impressed.
Also I completely forgot to say this but so very much want to read THUG TOO!! Am going book shopping today hopefully so I’ll keep on the look out.
They hype fear is real! And also I feel like it amps up our expectations SO much, that it’s often hard to meet them?!
afdjslafd the Raven Cycle is LIFE and definitely the best decision of ever to read it. And become fully obsessed with it.😂 PERFECTION. And Cassandra Clare is such a queen and I love her so so much ahh.
And oh agreed. Like Turtles was VERY anxiety inducing. It did get me a huge spike in my own anxiety which wasn’t…great. But I also appreciated that a book could mean so much to me to make me feel that much, you know? (And I loved TFIOS when I first read it but didn’t actually know it was so famous haha.)
And well the quote at the end is pretty much the entire point of Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.😂That’s the book its from haha.
We do share a couple! I am a fellow hipster who also discovered The Raven Boys before it was super famous, I think I got the first book like a week or a month after it came out or something but I wasn’t a blogger then so even if everyone was talking about it, I would not have known! I also had Legendary on my list. I don’t avidly follow the hype, I’ll take note of it, but I’ll only pick up a hyped book if it’s something I think I’ll like-less chance of being burned that way,
Yes yes same?! I like wasn’t really super into blogging when I read it. I mean I WAS blogging, but not really caught up on the blogosphere recs and stuff. 😂
Yeah I’ll be honest, even when I was blogging, I only really got into hyped books I think the year after I started, because I was a shy baby seventeen year old who was afraid of talking to people online….oh how times change!
So with you on Strange The Dreamer! I also think that the Illuminae books warrant their hype. You know what else warrants the donstand low-grade hype it gets? Sabriel. It seems slow but it buillllds and that’s great and then I think you would really love LIrael, the main character in the second book because she is so socially anxious and also depressed and it’s just a fact about her not something to be fized, but she does heal as the story happens. I have been telling you to read these books for YEARS CAIT. (this comment brought to you by my bookshelf, which is opposite me as I write so I can see all of the titles I mention haha. I often wait for reviews/library hold lists which is kind of the same thing.
AWw I was almost worried because you hadn’t mentioned Sabriel in AGES. 😂💛(TEASING. JUST TEASING.) Also YES, Illumiane was thoroughly worth its hype! And I think a lot of people were disappointed with Obsidio but I loved it!
Wonderful list Cait! I haven’t read many of these but I would also include THUG and Turtles in my list. I too become sad when people call John Green overrated or just trash his work. But I love his work.
THIG was so emotional and so good. It deserves all the hype in the world.
I would also include Children of Blood and Bone. For me that book certainly lived upto the hype 😃
I love John Green so much!! It seems like it’s actually “popular” (in a warped way) to hate on his stuff?! I hear so many people say he can’t write teens and I’m just like *blinks*…pretentious and intelligent teens EXIST?! It’s actually insulting to say they can’t be like that!
I’m glad you loved Children of Blood and Bone too! Now THAt is one that’s been insanely hyped haha.
Yea same thoughts on John Green. I don’t know why people targets him? There are actually such intelligent teens, as you said you were 😃
Yes, CoBaB was SO hyped! 😂
Wow! Seeing a lot of The Cruel Prince today! LOVED that book too, guess I just didn’t think it was hyped at the time! Lol. Most likely because I tend to avoid early reviews for books I am super excited for! Caraval made my list too, naturally! Lol! Great picks!
Here’s my Tuesday Post
Have a GREAT day!
Old Follower 🙂
The Cruel Prince was sooo good afjdkslad I’m SO glad it was everything it promised to be! ❤️
I’m wary when it comes to hyped books, and usually late to the party. All the Bright Places was a real let down, and I didn’t even realise Six of Crows and The Raven Cycle qualified as hyped!
Six of Crows and The Raven Cycle are very very massively hyped.😂
I AM A HYPE DEMON AND I’M NOT ASHAMED OF IT. I’ve only binge read YA this year and of course I read the most hyped book first and this is the tea: I LOVE ALMOST EVERY ONE OF THEM.
I actually love almost all the books in this list and I still can’t stop shrieking about them. Actually, I read all these hyped books because of you. You always talk about TRC and SoC and THUG and I’m such an obedient dragon so I devoured them all. AND LOVED THEM.
I follow the hype and read the reviews after. I’m not really fond of reading book reviews before reading because I don’t want them to affect my judgment.
I LOVE THIS BLOGPOST. AND AS MUCH AS I KNOW, ATPN IS PRETTY HYPED AS WELL. YOU AND YOUR BOOK ARE AWESOME CAIT.
EXCELLENT. *DEMONIC HYPE HI FIVE* And it’s like super cool to like the same books as other people and get to flail?! Like obviously not ALL of them will work for us but but some do!! And it’s fun!! And fajdkslad I’m so glad you liked my recommendations though. 😍 I have succeeded in life.
(I can never really tell if ATPN is hyped?! Because *I* am like its biggest hyper so does that count lmao. 😂)
Of course ATPN is hyped. My german twitter friend even said, “What is A Thousand Perfect Notes? It’s hyped on Twitter.”
And so I spent hours shrieking about your book 😉
OMGGG, RAIN!! MY DAY IS MADE.😂😂😂
omg so many people are like “I don’t trust the hype” while I’m here, completely ready with my arms out and RUNNING. INTO. THE HYPE because lmaoooo if so many other people loved it then I’m all here!! SoC is definitely one of the hyped books that I loved (altho I wasn’t bookishly online at that point and my friend recommended it to me lmao)!! Also Spinning Silver is a recent that I LOVED and definitely lived up to the hype… it was amazing…
SAME THO.😂😂It’s like “Oh hype? Let me have it ALL.” I just want to know what the fuss is about half the time?! Like don’t leave me out…I must know all the things.😂
I want to read Spinning Silver so bad! (BUT OF COURSE.)
I pay attention to hype, but I still choose the books I’ll read based on personal preference. I’ve gotten quite good over the years at knowing what I do and don’t like, especially in certain genres. For example, in my teenage years I read so much YA fantasy and paranormal with a female MC that I can hardly stand any of them these days. On the other hand, I’m really getting into YA contemporaries and have adored most of the “hyped” books I’ve picked up in that genre!
Ah I totally get that too! Like my tastes have changed a lot over the years, and even if I see a hyped dystopian I get REALLY cautious, because I got massively burned out on them. 😂
“One Os Us Is Lying” by Karen M. McManus! It hasn’t budged from the teen’s bestseller at the bookstore that I work at for a LONG time, and I totally get it! The story was great and it was so twisty right to the very end. I DID NOT SEE THAT PLOT TWIST COMING!!!
Ahh I’m so glad you enjoyed it!! I wasn’t so much on the hype train for that but I DID NOT see the ending coming.
🙂 I think you should get free cake every time you mention Maggie Stiefvater. The love is real LOL. (This is meant to be funny). And then build a cake castle.
I SHOULD. I should be hired as a bookseller too 😂😂I’ve convinced SO many people to read them.😂
Ooo, I’m reading Strange the Dreamer rn. SO FAR I LOVE IT. Like, what a unique book!!!! <3
That’s on my TBRITDF (To be read in the distant future) list.
LAZLO IS ALL OF US WITH HIS BOOK OBSESSION. I LOVE HIM.
All the books on here are either ones I’ve read on my shelf patiently waiting to be read! I cannot wait for the release of Queen of Air and Darkness! I fully agree with the ones I’ve read, they definitely lived up to the hype! I am bursting to read The Gentleman’s Guide!! Also, I’ve just ordered my copy of A Thousand Perfect Notes, so you are one book sale closer to becoming the amazing hyped author you’ve always dreamed of being (even though there was so much hype surrounding your debut already, I am so very excited to read it!)
Omggg Queen of Air and Darkness is going to mURDER OUR HEARTS FOREVER. And yet I can’t wait.😂 (Also I CAN wait afjdkslad I’m so nervous.)
Awww!! Thank you for getting ATPN! *sends you all the cake* 😍😍 I don’t even know how to tell if it was a little hyped or not? Like I didn’t shut up about it but yet. 😂I kind of don’t count here lmao.
Great list! I usually avoid hyped books because I’m rebellious and contrary, but I recently read Gentleman’s Guide and adored it. I need the sequel right now.
Omg isn’t Monty just everything?! He’s such a total DORK and I love him so much.😂
OMG CAIT YES TO HATING THE DARKLING MUAHAHA. I will never get why people love him so much! Anyway, Shadow & Bone was an okay read for me too, but I LOOOOVED Six of Crows (haven’t read Crooked Kingdom yet but I just got my copy)! I also just got Caraval (which might partly be because you love it so much)! ♥
I still need to read The Gentleman’s Guide and The Hate U Give! I know, I’m a horrible YA reader for not having read them yet. T_T
Me neither?!? Whenever I say “oh my ship sunk in the Grisha books” everyone starts saying how much they lvoed the Darkling too…and I’m like no???? NIKOLAI??? MY ONE TRUE LOVE??? THE DARKLING CAN GO JUMP.😂 And omg I hope Caraval lives up to the hype for you!!
But but AIMEE! You have to read THUG!
😂
I LOVE the point you made about hyped books turning the world into a book club because IT’S SO TRUE.
I looooved The Raven Cycle, Six of Crows, The Hate U Give, and The Cruel Prince – literally everything else on this list is on my TBR so clearly I NEED TO GET TO WORK. I just started reading Cassandra Clare books this year and I’m reading them in publication order – right now I’m working on Clockwork Prince! I think I like the TMI series better than TID so far, though. Also, Magnus, forever. ♥
Isn’t it the best part though?!💛 Like I know a lot of people hate hype but I’m like “BUT WE CAN ALL TALK ABOUT THE BOOKS!!” AHHHH. 😂It makes me happy haha. And omg I’m so glad we have a lot of the same favourites. (Also most people like TID better, but I love TMI the most!! Magnus is perfect.)
This is such a wonderful list, Cait, I love it <3 I'm also really glad to see you love John Green as much as I do, I love his books and his writing and I really loved Turtles, it was an intense but amazing read <3
I also agree with you about The Raven Boys (this squad. these characters ahhhhhhhh), The Hate U Give (SO powerful and amazing) and Six of Crows (was terrified to read this for years. I finally did this month and wow, okay. I get the hype now haha.
Wonderful post! <3
AHHH I LOVE JOHN GREEN SO MUCH I WILL FLAIL FOREVER. Turtles was SO intense. It really spiked my anxiety, but at the same time it was really therapeutic to read?! I’m so happy he’s still writing. 😭💛💛
I’m realizing I’ve read more hyped books than I thought. But still, I only pick up a hyped book if I’m sure it’s my “thing.” Life is short.
That’s fair! Life IS ridiculously short and there are so many books *wails*
Oh I love hyped books because then I can talk with them to everybody. Although yesterday I tried starting Throne of Glass . . . that was an . . . interesting experience O_O . . . Chaol and Dorian where interesting but the rest was just no
Honestly my list of hyped loved books is too long so my all time favorites are:
-Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus
-Harry Potter
-Legend
-Warcross
-Six of Crows
-The Cruel Prince
-The Maze Runner (I shall love this series no matter how much hate it gets)
-The Lunar Chronicles
-An Ember in the Ashes (most recent favorite)
And hey speaking of you becoming a big author I’ve been noticing a lot of my Goodreads friends adding ATPN lately so you may be getting there
Ahh hahah. I’m dying because I feel the same way about Throne of Glass.😂I mean I usually love hyped books??? But me @ all the Sarah J Maas books = nope.😂 Get me out of here.
YES TO YOUR LIST! I’ve just got to get on the Marie Lu train yet, but ajfdksald I love the rest. And I’m going to reread Ember in the Ashes so I can go on with the series.
Awww. *shoos ATPN into the big scary world* Maybe it will go far. 😍😍
The Cruel Prince also lived up to the hype for me. I’m currently reading Six of Crows (finally!!!) and loving it, so it’ll probably join my list soon 🙂
The Hate U Give and Caraval are on my TBR list.
I’ll read a book if it has an interesting premise, but sometimes I have to wait for the hype to convince me to read a book. There are just too many books out there waiting to be read 😂
Ah yes that’s definitely another good reason the hype is good! It convinces me to read books way faster.! 😂
I get pretty drawn into the hype when I hear great things about a book that sounds like something I’d love to read, and usually I wind up loving the book, too! I LOVED Legendary and Six of Crows and Strange the Dreamer and The Cruel Prince and Turtles All the Way Down (those are all some of my favorites!!) and another hyped book I really loved was Furyborn!!
Ahh I’m so glad we have a lot of the same favourite hyped ones.😍😍
THUG WAS SOOOOOO GOOD!!!!!! I’m so excited for the movie, but also high key scared it’s going to be a train wreck. I loved The Maze Runner series, it was really well done and NEWT AGHGHGHGH. I could cry for days.
Nooo I think THUG is going to be AMAZING! I mean the team is so passionate about it and the author freaking loves it, so I’m confident! I Can’t WAIT.
I loved the Maze Runner series too until I heard how horrible the author was. Totally ruined it for me.😭
I just read “Aristotle and Dante…” and fell absolutely in love with it; it’s one of my two favourite 2018 reads. “Gentleman’s Guide…” was my favourite read of 2017…Monty is just hilarious and adorable! I loved how he wasn’t the stereotypical “hero” character; it made him SO much easier to relate to. I’m very eager to read the sequel on Felicity’s story.
“Six of Crows” is on my TBR list for this year…I’m a little nervous to read it with all the hype, and since I tend to steer clear of multiple perspective writing styles…but hopefully it’s good.
I’m absolutely wildly DYING for Felicity’s book ahhh!!!! I LOVED HER SO MUCH. With her books and her snark and how she was so much more confident than Monty, who was over there flailing from bad decision to bad decision.😂I love him though. He’s such an oblivious dork and THE BEST.
Six of Crows is worth it, I promise! And if you’re into audios, it has a particularly fantastic one!
I love them both for different reasons. Felicity defies all social and gender norms, and she’s just so full of sass and is insanely smart. Monty is just a mess but in the most loving way possible. And I’m totally a chicken like him, so I can relate haha!!
Do you know which audio book version you’d recommend??
I seriously can’t WAIT. I think I am more like Monty than Felicity, but I admire Felicity more.😂 If that makes sense. I’m a walking catastrophe. I think Felicity could rule the world.
Audiobook version for Six of Crows? I believe it only has one!
Oh sweet! That makes it easier to find haha! And she could…and I would totally follow her 😂
Nice list! I also like your reasons on why hype is a good thing. I tend to shy away from hype most of the time though it does make me curious. If it sounds like something I’ll enjoy, I’ll get to it eventually. I’d really like to read Six of Crows but haven’t managed to get around to it yet. I need more time to read! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.
It can be so much fun! Definitely has it’s downsides but I’ve discovered more good books from it than not *flails* !
I agree with all of these! (Or at least the ones I’ve read . . .) I don’t mind when books are hyped, for the most part, because when I do like the book, it’s fun to join in the fangirling. I’ve only been disappointed a few times when I picked up a book everyone was screaming about and didn’t care for it. A few other books I’d add to the list as books that deserved the attention are Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Fangirl, The Lunar Chronicles, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
It is definitely disappointing to be on the wrong side and then everyone won’t shut up about it and we’re over here like “STAAAHP.”😂😂 Me @ Sarah J Maas books lmao.
but omg AGREED about Simon, Fangirl, Lunar Chronicles and Perks! I can’t believe I forgot Simon!? Bookworm corner of shame for me.😂
The Gentlemen’s Guide is crouching patiently in my wishlist, waiting until I have some extra $ to spring. Once you’ve discovered immortality pass it along? Please? All the bookworms are going to need it. And then we can hype books together, forever. That came out much creepier than it was as a thought.
Honestly I’m going to find immortality = sell it = be able to fun all the books I want to buy WHILE living forever. It’s a good life plan.
So I only recently joined the whole bookish community thing, and its been a bit strange in the way of hyped books. It goes something like, I find a book, I have no idea that they’re hyped, and later on I’ll be talking to someone saying, “Wow you would not believe this amazing book I just read!!”, only to have them tell me that they know about the book, everyone knows about the book, how have I not heard about the book? In general though, I like when books are hyped because then I get a nice recommendation list. On the other hand, I have to look at my poor not mainstream babies all covered in dust from the lack of being read 😔.
Ah hahha.😂But hey at least then you read the books without too much expectations so you won’t be disappointed!! But I do agree it’s frustrating not to have many people love the same less-hyped books?! Like omg there are so many good books out there people!! FLAIL WITH ME. READ THEM ALL.
*saves this post to add all these books to my TBE Pile*
Thank you for the gift that is this post. Always looking for some good YA books, I love them but can never find any for some reason? I’m clearly not very good at this yet!
😁
Stick around my blog for long enough and you will dROWN in good YA recs.😂😂
Magnus Bane is the best <3 And although I'm not a fan of the Film or TV Series – both versions of Magnus Bane save it, especially Godffrey Gao's interpretation hahaha.
AND YESSS THE CRUEL PRINCE. There's just some moments while reading the book where I was literally screaming. The last paragraph and OMG the bloodbath at the Ceremony aack!
I actually SO love the movie lmao. And honestly I don’t want to see the tv series except for Magnus…I’m torn. I should try it but also?! I’ve heard it’s so bad.😂
THE CRUEL PRINCE JUST DESTROYED ME. HOLY HECK IT WAS SO STABBY.
Yeah, the show is pretty cheesy. It would be okay if the actors for Jace and Clary weren’t so bad.
Did you get the ARC for The Wicked King?
Nooooo. I got denied on Edelweiss. 😭😭😭But they deny me for literally everything lmao.
Helloooooo, darling !!!
You ARE gonna kill me now, but i’m not a Stiefvater fan xD It breaks my heart to have to break this down to you, but it’s the truth. And i know you LOVE her but i’ve read everything she’s ever written and i can’t get into her xD SORRY XD So that one’s a no from me 😛 Tho i did have a lot of fun reading TRC, i guess. It was a good read.
Six of Crows is such a hyped book that tooootally deserves it !! And AADDTSOTU !! And Legendary !! AND ALL THE OTHER BOOKS YOU’VE MENTIONED XD Yup, i’ve loved them all and they’re so frikkin’ perfect <3
Hyped books that i'd add ??? EVERY SCHWAB NOVEL XD
Kisses !!!!
Well you could…literally just not tell me you don’t like TRC. 😂 Lmao. Easy fix.
Six of Crows is AMAZING and omg did you hear Bardugo is going to write a third eventually?! Schwab is also perfect and constantly hyped. I’m kind of ashamed I didn’t have her on my list oops!
I want to read just about every book you have listed because of the hype and solemnly swear to do so possibly maybe before I die.
SURELY WE CAN READ EVERYTHING BEFORE WE DIE.
Yes yes yes! Bring on the hype!! This is such an AMAZING list Cait!! *heart eyes* *endless fangirling* *possible squealing* I typically read hyped books because I like being able to ask literally any book lover and chances are they read the book too and then bam instant book besties! Six of Crows is an all time fav, The Cruel prince is literally life, and I’m dying to get my hands on Caraval and the Gentlemans guide to vice and virtue. Great post 🙂
*ALL THE ENDLESS FANGIRLING WITH YOU AHHH* Honestly I really like the conversations it brings! I love being able to say “oh I loved that part too!” with other bookworms! Which is a lot easier than talking to yourself about underhyped books.😂Although I mean, I still read the underrated ones a LOT!!
CRUEL PRINCE IS EVERYTHINGGGGG.
Oh, Cait. Sometimes the hype is so well deserved, and I am BLESSED with these precious gems in book form… and then other times, I’m like, “…I think I was reading a different book to everybody else.” Ok, so books I didn’t like: Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (I’M SORRY! I’m pretty sure this was hyped when I read it, but it just wasn’t for me. However, I have enjoyed the three Raven Boys books I’ve read). Books by Sarah Rees Brennan – I have read both The Demon’s Lexicon and Unspoken, and they both were pretty hyped when I read them (though it feels almost like hardly anyone knows who she is now? Even though she had a book out in the last year or so?), and they were just not for me at all. I don’t like her writing style. Caraval by Stephanie Garber. No. Nope. No. I am not at all a fan of obstacle-after-obstacle-after-obstacle books. It’s a case of “It’s not you, it’s me,” here. Ok, that’s just a selection.
The ones I loved? Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. I’m pretty sure I’ve told you before that I loved this book before anyone else knew it existed, due to reading it on a work experience placement at the publisher. I died waiting for it to come out and for everyone else to read it so I could rave with the world. Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I was behind everyone else on reading this, and I absolutely loved it! Easy by Tammara Webber. SO SO GOOD! The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. There are others, but I’m struggling to find them, ha! I love more often than I don’t, though, so there’s that!
(CAIT! As an aside – I was just going through my review list for this, and I saw Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian, and have you read it?! If not, I suggest you do, BUT, you gotta read the whole trilogy, because of twists and woaaaaah. So, so good! It’s not so light and fluffy. It’s girls getting revenge on those who have hurt them, but things go wrong. BUT SO GOOD! AND TWISTS! I know I said that already, but maaan. So good. I think you might like it? Maybe?)
From your list, I looooved Strange the Dreamer (which I keep calling Stranger the Dreamer, which is annoying). I need Muse of Nightmares (which I get confused, slightly, with For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig. For a Muse of Fire. Mate.) I loved The Hate U Give! So, so, so good! So powerful, and so important! I have read a total of two books by Cassie Clare and then decided not to bother any more, although I enjoyed them, because that is just too much commitment, and I have other books to read. Haha!
I’m kind of liking that you loved Six of Crows more than Shadow and Bone. I was like “this is ok, but not wow.” And haven’t touched anything else. Would I need to read the whole Shadow and Bone trilogy to read Six of Crows (which I just typed as Six of Bones)?
Cait, I am so fae’d out. I read so many books featuring fae when I first started reading YA. (I remember mostly the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr.) And I read too many, and now I just can’t stand them. I tried reading Tithe, but I just couldn’t do it. And have steered clear of Holly Black ever since. I do have The Darkest Part of the Forest… is that fae? Please say no. I can’t be doing with them 🙁
John Green… I’ve only read The Fault in Our Stars, which I enjoyed, but I’m also kind of… meh about reading anything else for some reason? I think it’s because I didn’t enjoy TFIOS as much as I was expecting, due to hype, so it felt a little anticlimatic, and now I’m not sure if I want to invest time in his other stuff and feel disappointed again. I have similar feelings towards Benjamin Alire Sáenz for some reason, too. I don’t think it was the hype thing. I did enjoy Aristotle & Dante, and I enjoyed Last Night I Sang to the Monster, but I’m still generally apathetic to the idea of reading his other stuff,
I still have The Gentleman’s Guide to read! Not got to it yet, but I’m really looking forward to it! Which is odd, as I’m not generally an historical fiction fan. But it does sound really good!
To your questions… I do generally pick up hyped books, unless it sounds like something I wouldn’t like at all, and then I don’t bother. I do definitely try to go more for the hyped diverse books I’m looking forward to rather than the non-diverse ones, but I always plan to get to them eventually. And when it comes to favourite authors, I don’t care if a book is hyped or not, I am readding it!
This comment is so long, I’m sorry! I will shut up, and get to bed, as I have to be up to catch a plane tomorrow! 🙂 Loved the post, Cait!
It’s funny how some books get super hyped and then totally FADE out of existence, right?! Like I always feel Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness is no longer hyped or talked about AT ALL but they were once mega famous! And omg I’m still so excitedly amazed that you were into DOSAB before everyone else! You just knew when something was going to be amazing. 😉
And holy wow JENNY HAN YES PLEASE. I’ve only read her Lara Jean books but I want to read more!
There are too many “muses” coming out this year right?!😂
I think you do sort of need to read the Grisha book BEFORE Six of Crows? Like you don’t technically have to, but it gives a lot more context to the world and in Crooked Kingdom it introduces some characters you’d only know from the grisha books. BUt that saying, I do know readers who love SoC without having read the first Grisha books! (But then if you don’t, you miss out on the GIFT that is Nikolai!)😂
I hope you have a good flight!!
I actually like hype because I don’t think my opinion of a book changes much with it, but it gets some super amazinggg books on my radar. I feel like I’m pretty good at picking out books that I know I’ll like, so if I can tell I won’t like a hyped up book, I’ll just pass it (but I honestly change my mind a lottt so I’ll probably eventually pick it up if I’m in the mood). So really I see hardly any drawbacks to having super talked about books. I mean hype is super useful to find a lot of wonderful books that I will forever love and shout about to everyone until they’re sick and tired of hearing about how Kell’s magical infinite sided coat is the love of my life (this is normal right). I mean I adore the Shades of Magic trilogy and I don’t know if I would have found it if it wasn’t so hyped, which would have been a disaster. I mean I still just finished the last book ACOL yesterday (I KNOW I’M SO LATE TO THE PARTY) because I just wasn’t interested when I first heard about it (I don’t know what I was thinking either), but I FINALLY THANKFULLY got around to it because of the hype surrounding it. Some other super popular books/ series I adore are: Shades of Magic, To Kill a Kingdom, The Book Thief (I still have to watch the movie ahhh), The Raven Cycle, Cinder, and The Cruel Prince.
Agreed! It definitely alerts me to a lot of books! Also I feel books are hyped differently depending on where you are?! Like the twitter vs blogger vs instagram hyped books always feel different?!😂IDK if that’s just me though haah.
I LOVE ADSOM. DEFINITELY NEVER STOP SHOUTING ABOUT IT. And omg are you okay after ACOL?? *sends comforting cake* But actually to be strictly honest…I didn’t read ADSOM until AGOS was nearly out too. I was interested but not super pulled because I was like “ew adult fantasy”.😂Then it made me go on a big adult fantasy kick and I totally really adore the genre now!
OH YES THE BOOK THIEF! Infinite love. The movie is really good and super faithful!
Hmm I don’t usually follow the hype – but I do read widely known books when they get really amazing reviews – like the Hunger Games and The Book Thief and Caraval and all of John Greens books, especially TFiOS and Turtles!!
And usually the hype is for a good reason – the books are great and everyone loves them! But sometimes it’s just hyped for content and not so much a good story, if you know what I mean. So I wait for reviews 😊
That’s fair to wait for the reviews! Like some hyped books I’m totally not onboard with haha, but I tend to want to try everything just in case?!😂I’m terrible for peer pressure. Give me aaall the books.
I have not read any of the books on your list this week. They all look good.
Here’s a link to my TTT post for this week:
http://captivatedreader.blogspot.com/2018/07/top-ten-tuesday-popular-books-that.html
Happy reading!!
I hope you get to read them then!
Definitely agree with The Hate U Give and Strange the Dreamer! And I do hope I feel similarly about Legendary, since I just finished Caraval, eep! I liked Turtles, Six of Crows, and The Raven Boys but I didn’t love them hype-level, if that makes sense? As for The Cruel Prince… I’ll just be over here black sheeping if you need me.
I had a hard time coming up with a list, so I didn’t do one. I mean- The Hunger Games of course, the OG YA hype series. Illuminae. Ummm. TFIOS. See why I didn’t do this topic? It’s HARD!
Noooo don’t black sheep my precious Cruel Prince.😂😂(Ok but fair fair. I have forgiven you for hating Half Lost so we’ll just flail over Scythe and THUG then.😂)
THE HUNGER GAAAAAMES. But of course. :’)
We’ve got a lot of overlap this week! (And some of the ones on your list that I don’t have could well be on mine… Strange the Dreamer and The Cruel Prince definitely… I think I like a lot of hyped books because… oftentimes popular books are really good!)
Ahhh STRANGE THE DREAMER AND THE CRUEL PRINCE THO. *all the heart eyes*
The endings of both I was, like, personally attacked by. I MUST KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND I MUST KNOW YESTERDAY. I know they’re not cliffhangers in the classic sense but there’s A LOT of tension (especially in The Cruel Prince, I am so excited to read The Wicked King).
I totally agree with you about the book club thing! Nothing tells me more quickly that the new person I met is going to be my bestie than if we’re in love with the same books. It’s a great litmus test. You hated Scythe? You monster! (My husband is still reading this, so the jury’s out on whether I’ll need to get a divorce or not).
Okay, it’s pretty horrible, but all of your list is on my TBR list and I’ve read none of them except The Cruel Prince … which sort of makes me wonder what the heck I’ve been wasting all my time on? There’s books to read! Jeez.
WAIT. Cardan and Jules don’t have a swoony relationship? … I think one of us needs to examine our priorities. I’m not sure which. xD
I’m always sort of suspicious of hyped books, but if people I know with the same taste in books start saying they like it, I usually give it a shot.
It’s so handy, right!? 😂 And also gives instant conversations! or like…avoid avoid. I can’t talk to people who are hating on the Raven Cycle.😂 I mean I don’t care if they don’t like it..JUST WE CAN’T TALK ABOUT IT AT ALL. NOPE.😂
I mean, some people say Cardan/Jude are swoony?! My interpretation was different lmao.
Amazing picks Cait! I’m really behind with hyped books because I tend to wait and see some negative reviews first to adjust my expectations and they can be hard to look for 😬 My favorite from this list is The Raven Cycle, despite not understanding what was happening I fell in love with the story and characters ❤
That’s fair! i mean there are SO many books to read though…how on earth do we keep up with everything!?😂
omg Monty IS the definition of MOVE I’M GAY you are so right. And ahhhhHHH you mentioned so many books I love in this post (LOOKING AT YOU, RAVEN BOYS) but let’s for a second have a Big Feeling about LOVELY TY FROM DARK ARTIFICES. QUEER AUTISTIC KID INTO SHERLOCK HOLMES? I WILL PROTECT HIM WITH MY WHOLE QUEER AUTISTIC SHERLOCK HOLMES NERD HEART the end. (I’m, uh, going to go out on a limb and say he’s queer before the last book comes out because… because I am p sure that’s where we’re going lbr)
ISN’T HE JUST?! I love him so much. And omg autistic Sherlock is everything and I’m so glad Cassandra Clare wrote Ty that way. It has my heart.😭💛💛 And um heck yes he’s queer. 😂 We have been blessed.
I love this list! The Hate U Give is also on my list – I will never stop recommending it! I actually have The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice and Virtue waiting to be read, solely because you and Maraia both loved it, and, well, I trust your judgement!
You might ban me from your blog forever but I’ve never ready any Maggie Stiefvater! I’m actually kind of scared by the hype in this case. I don’t want to be the odd one out who doesn’t love her work. Which is ridiculous, I know. I mean, I have her books waiting to be read but do I attempt The Raven Cycle or The Wolves Of Mercy Falls first? HELP ME PLEASE!!
Omg you will NOT be disappointed by The Gentleman’s Guide! IT IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE AND I’M STILL SOBBING OVER HOW MUCH I LOVE IT. (Which reminds me I should reread!)
Ok but now here is your homework to go read some Stiefvater, Rhoda!! 😂😂 But actually go for The Scorpio Races first! It’s a standalone so like there’s no pressure for more books and it’s the BEST EVER (I mean I love TRC probably the most, but I Started with TSR and it was a very good decision!)
Oh man, now I want to drop everything and go read it!
Ah ok. I shall get on it! Maraia mentioned The Scorpio Races too, so if you are both telling me to read it I’d better do it! 😀 Thank you!
If BOTH Maraia and I are saying it…we can’t be wrong. :’) 😂
Right now Simon Vs. is like, all I talk about, so DEFINITELY that one.
I’m actually on a re-read right now after watching the movie (so beautiful) and I’m making a soundtrack with all the songs they mention and I hAVE OREOS AND EVERYTHING IS PERFECT
now if only martin could leave my beautiful gay son alone
YES SIMON VS. 😍 I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I actually fully meant to put it on here and then I forgot! (Clearly I like too many hyped books?!)
Martin can go die tho. *is obviously very chill about this and not at all protective of precious hufflepuff cinnamon son Simon*
(There’s absolutely nothing wrong with liking a lot of hyped books, it just means you get let down a lot more if the book ends up being crappy)
And asdfhjkl watching the movie when I noticed the Hufflepuff badge on his wall I fLIPPED OUT like “I KNEW THAT BOY WAS A PUFFLE MY B O I”
HE IS SUCH A HUFFLEPUFF I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. But I think Blue is also a huffle?! So it’s like THE HUFFLE BOYS LOOK AT THEM GO OMG PRECIOUS CINNAMONS
They are such perfect Huffles. Meanwhile Leah is the Snarkiest Slytherin and is a perfect BFF for Si.
Huffles and Slytherins are the actual best friendship (or romantic) combinations of the world. I love them.
My Huffle self needs a Slytherin bff ngl
I’m too soft for my own good.
Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda was that book for me…I’m generally not all over hyped books, but that one. Augh. The emotions. My heart.
Omg SAME. I meant to put that on here but I ran out of room! Still happy/crying over how good it is. 😍😍
Yes! I actually really like hype too. It means that enough people have liked it that it is successful and possibly worthy of hype that I am even more willing to love it and hype it myself. It also makes it way more disappointing though if I do not enjoy the book. Thanks for sharing, Cait!
I feel like that too?! Like I get that some people hate hype, but I genuinely don’t understand why people say that refuse to read hyped books.😂I mean sometimes they’re famous for really good reasons haha.
I 100% agree with you on Maggie Stiefvater. I’m reading Crooked Kingdom right now and I’m in love! Great list, Cait. 🙂
Check out my TTT and please vote in my Make Me Read It Readathon poll
Crooked Kingdom is phenomenal!! AHH THAT ENDING.
I am with you on Six of Crows duology. I liked the Grisha books well enough but this duology blew it out of the water. I can’t wait for King of Scars. <3 I will probably be reading Strange the Dreamer next week. 😉
So SO much!! They are absolutely incredible. 😍 Although tbh, Nikolai’s book (Siege & Storm) was also my fav in the Grisha trilogy so I am afjksdl so so excited for King of Scars AHHH!!!
I loved Strange the Dreamer and want to read Six of Crows, The Cruel Prince, and Legendary someday (I read Caraval recently, but there’s still a wait at the library for Legendary). I guess I agree with you in that I don’t mind hyped books. There’s usually a reason for its hype.
Usually for sure yes!😂I mean some hyped books are like…why. 😂But usually I’m all over them! I hope you get a chance to read Legendary someday ahhh.
I have to say one of the best books that lived up to the hype was the Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom! I definitely had my doubts early on before I read it, simply because I didn’t fall in love with the Grisha trilogy…but this was the stabby little dark cinnamon roll bebe’s I didn’t know I needed. I love this duology and honestly it is one of the highest rec’d books at my bookstore because EVERYONE loves it.
I also feel like Hazel wood was really deserving of the hype, all the twisty magic and darkness…obviously I have a type. 🙂 and there was this little book by this Australian author called a thousand perfect notes that needs so much more love but is so worth it. (wink)
love this post so much! have a great day Cait!
AHH ISN’T IT JUST BRILLIANT?!? I admire Leigh Bardugo’s brain so much tbh. 😂How does she come up with such amazingness???
And I still need to read The Hazelwood! I actually own it but gah. Where are my priorities.
Awww, I feel like I’ve VAGELY HEARD of this book called ATPN too. :’) :’)
SO SO SO I just read Six of Crows a couple of months ago because I was *shook* from the hype, but you are so right–it lives up to it. I loved this book and its characters. Plus I like being in the loop, you know? It sucks to read and love a book that no one has heard of. I like SHARING in my excitement. I am sad to say that I still haven’t read like half of these because I’m scared to, but with your stamp of approval on it, it’s probably about time. I just finished Three Dark Crowns recently, which was SO SUPER HYPED, but I ended up really enjoying it! I usually do in the end, so I don’t know why I’m always so nervous. Also, I’ve been gone graduating from high school and all that stuff recently, and I MISS reading your posts! They always make me so happy inside, you know?
IT’S JUST SO EXCELLENT. I AM IN AWE OF LEIGH BARDUGO’S MIND THO OMGGGG.
I also like sharing excitement with other bookworms?! Like reading an underrated gem is AMAZING but then…there’s no one to talk to.😂And I have to try and convince everyone to read it with me (which isn’t bad tbh…but by the time they’ve read it, I’ve forgotten the plot lmao. Someone give me a new brain.)
Nawww YOU SAY SUCH NICE THING. 💛💛
Awesome post,I also like to read YA 🙂
Thanks for reading. 🙂
I think it’s a great thing to have hype surrounding a particular book or series. If it has hype, then you know MANY people have read it, and most love it, so in my opinion, why not jump on the bandwagon and read it? I love hyped books, but some can be a bit disappointing for me, that’s why I try to go in with an open mind, trying to figure out why people are into this. Great post, as usual, keep up the good work Cait!
Yes! And it’s kind of just fun and exciting to be able to join in the discussion!! (Although definitely agree that some don’t live up to the hype at all *wails*)
I usually trust the hype to be honest (hehe). I feel like it’s usually pretty spot on to be honest. I followed the “hype” when I picked up The Hate U Give and that book will forever be in my Top 10. It was just such a stunning book and I thought it was so incredible. (Currently praying that the film will do the book justice). I tried jumping on the John Green bandwaggon ages ago too, but I hopped off pretty quickly since I honestly didn’t really like his writing style (it just wasn’t for me) and I actually really didn’t like The Fault In Our Stars (unpopular opinion I know). But I’m so glad I listened to all the amazing reviews for Turtles All The Way Down, because again, that book was so incredible and totally worth the read.
Gorgeous post!!

Omg the hype for THUG was REAL AND SO SPOT ON AND PERFECT AND IT DESERVES ALL THE LOVE.💛And I’m all for trying multiple books from an author too! Like you never know if just one doesn’t suit or if everything won’t. (AKA I am still here trying to read everything of ever.😂)
I used to do this thing where if other people hyped up a book, I’d actively AVOID reading it? Like, I didn’t read Percy Jackson until I was in high school, because young, naive me though that they were “overrated.” I was very, very wrong and I have since changed my ways. I don’t usually follow the hype very closely though, unless it’s an author I’m familiar with or the story really grabs my attention.
Also, since you mentioned Six of Crows… I didn’t realize it was a sequel to The Grisha Trilogy until about 70% through the book? So I just kinda shrugged and went on with it anyway and it was SO GOOD. That one definitely lived up to the hype. But now I’m afraid to read Shadow and Bone…
Anyways, I love the list! *adds books to ever-growing TBR*
haha 😂😂 I actively GO for all hyped books. Unless it super much seems like not my thing? But then I generally still read it because I’m thoroughly peer-pressured 😂😂
And yes Six of Crows like doesn’t NEED people to read the Grisha books first, but I think they really add to the world building! I definitely liked it better than Shadow & Bone oops.😂
I am low key wary of hyped books as well because I’m always disappointed when they are overhyped and my expectations are sky high. But Omg all of these books (except for Turtles which I didn’t love) are sooo good? Great list Cait!
I feel like when people get to hyping like these excellent diverse authors, we’re ACTUALLY GETTING THE GLORY WE’RE PROMISED. 😍😍
I love this, and I totally agree!! Hype can be scary bc I’m never sure whether to believe it or not. For me, the hype definitely lived up to Legendary, To All the Boys, Children of Blood and Bone, and Hunger Games.
It CAN be scary and it definitely doesn’t always win out, but I’m super lucky in that most of the hyped books I try do work for me?! *flails*
I was SO happy to read your mini rant on John-Green-haters. I get not liking a book, but swearing off something that you haven’t experienced? And deciding your opinion on an author’s newest book based on their previous book(s)? UGH it’s frustrating.
Usually books do live upto the hype and I’m glad there are people who loved Holly Black even before Cruel Prince hit the stores. Although I still have to read this one but she is the queen of all things dark and supernatural with a mystic atmosphere. Maggie Stiefvater deserves the title as well 🙂
Sarah Rees Brennan is another author that must be included in this list. She’s another reason why I was so excited for Truly Devious, apart from the boarding school setting.
I kind of like knowing I enjoyed an author before they became massively famous.😂My hipster streak coming out ah ahhaa. But OMG…I’ve seen people say “The Cruel Prince is ripping off Sarah J Maas” and I’m just like yOU DID NOT. HOLLY BLACK HAS BEEN HERE FOR YEARS AND THIS IS HER QUEENDOM AND EVERYONE ELSE WRITING FAERIES MUST BOW TO HER.😂I’m very passionate about Holly Black lmao.
I need to read more by Sarah Rees Brennan too!!
When I saw Six of Crows on here I was ready to go to war! But then you agreed with the hype machine and I put down all my weapons. Ok I dont have weapons…. but I do have licence plates that say Kaz…. and I know how to use them!!!!
The hype doesn’t always lie!!😂I actually often agree with it haha. (KAZ IS EVERYTHING.)
(THE RAVEN CYCLE SPOILER AHEAD)
2019 goal: Read all those posts I haven’t read in your blog. Lol. I absolutely LOVED SIX OF CROWS AND STRANGE THE DREAMER (although I also don’t think it’s YA??) and THUG is a must-read for everyone breathing on this planet. This year I shall finish The Raven Cycle and hope the series doesn’t end messy and sad. I’m curious how Blue and Gansey will end together (if they do) like, I know she saw him in the graveyard that night with that creepy aunt of hers whose name I just forgot, but… I didn’t see anything going on between them the first two books. I deeply ship(ped) Adam and Blue… I’ll have to see what happens next. Also I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO RONAN
AHHH I love The Raven Cycle SO MUCH. It’s like my favourite series in this universe, so I really hope you like The Raven King! I personally thought it was perfect. 💛💛
