And don’t forget to enter the GIVEAWAY! Details are after the interview.
Did you always dream of being published? Or did you start writing as a hobby?
I started writing poetry/scripts really young, and it was just for fun. But I was 12 when I started trying to write novels and decided I wanted to be published someday 🙂
A logical conclusion, right? Was there a book that inspired you to start writing?
There were 3, really: THE GOLDEN COMPASS, ENDER’S GAME, and GREEN ANGEL. But really, those were just ones I read around the age of 12. I’ve always been an avid reader, and all the books I read as a kid definitely contributed to my desire to write!
How old were you when WHAT’S LEFT OF ME was published?
19 when the series sold, 21 when WLoM came out 🙂
Are there more titles in the series?! (Because you kind of left us hanging at the end there!)
Yup! It’s a trilogy. Book 2, ONCE WE WERE, comes out September 17, 2013. Book 3 is as yet untitled, but it’ll be out in 2014.
(Excuse me while I dash off to see if ONCE WE WERE is on Goodreads…) What’s the last book you read and what made you pick it up?
Hmm… I’ve been so crazy busy recently I haven’t been pleasure reading a lot >.< The last book I read was probably SEVER, and I read it because I was dying to know how The Chemical Gardens series ended!
Do you think teens should be writing and trying to get published? Or should they wait until they have more life experience?
I thinks teens are perfectly capable of getting published 🙂 It’s definitely a lot of work, but if it’s what you really want, then I say go for it!
Woot! Love that! Can you tell us a little about your querying process and how you got your agent?
Kat Zhang is an avid traveler, and after a childhood spent living in one book after another, she now builds stories for other people to visit. An English major at Vanderbilt University, she spends her free time performing Spoken Word poetry, raiding local bookstores, and plotting where to travel next. What’s Left of Me–about a girl with two souls–is her first novel and was released by HarperCollins on 9/18/2012. The sequel, Once We Were, comes out 9/17/2013. She is represented by Emmanuelle Morgen of Stonesong. You can read about her travels, literary and otherwise, on her website or check her out on Twitter.
Thanks for coming to the party, Kat! The interview was fantastic! I’m impatiently waiting for your second book’s cover to be released (and, of course, the book itself…)
