As I’ve said quite often: authors are mystical beings whom I revere and therefore avoid talking to at all costs.
I should also mention two things here: (1) I am an author, so I am in the midst of avoiding myself at all costs, and (2) I misspelled “mystical” and autocorrect wanted me to go with “hysterical” and I’m like…where is the lie.
Most authors = mystical wondrous beings.
Me, as an author = hYSTERICAL
Now I’m also very very very shy. Many people don’t believe me when I say it, because I’m very outgoing online, but I’ve worked up to this! Talking to people in real life?!? AH HAHAHA HA NO. So when other bookworms are all “Oh I’m dying to meet my favourite author”…I am over here, dying to not meet anyone. (I have social anxiety eep.)
Online I am marginally better at making connections. All my very closest friends are people I’ve met exclusively online. And I WILL work up courage now and then to talk to authors. Although I most adore them from a distance. I mean that’s the obvious conclusion right??? If you admire someone you absolutely and entirely IGNORE THEM.
Self five.
Now it’s time to tell you about 10 Online Author Interactions I’ve had that didn’t end up with me turning into demon smoke and vanishing. Which is a very very real thing I do.
This is actually a part 2! And you can see part 1 here, where I confess to talking to Cornelia Funke, Jennifer Niven, Derek Landy, and Leigh Bardugo on twitter in the past. (Spoiler: I DIED.)
I’m also twisting the Top Ten Tuesday prompt of “Authors I’d Love to Meet” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
1. LAINI TAYLOR
So no big deal but LAINI THE QUEEN TAYLOR congratulated me on my debut novel’s release and I just….!!!!! I mean she also follows me on twitter and this is totally unrelated to me becoming a truly dedicated fan who would be eaten by a leviathan in some far mystical realm for her. Totally unrelated.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
(No but seriously. As a debut author who largely gets ignored by most writers now for reasons I am completely lost by…THIS means everything.)
2. AKEMI DAWN BOWMAN
She’s also a new(ish) author too and I know has anxiety so I thought, “Ok!! Anxious people unite!” Which is hilarious considering anxious people do not unite…we hide from each other. But regardless, when Akemi posted about some things she wished she’d known in her debut year (a totally encouraging and incredible post by the way) I actually replied and said how helpful the post was!
AND SHE REPLIED BACK.
Awww!! And she’s excited about my book, which (by the by) you should read Starfish because it is actually a little similar to A Thousand Perfect Notes. They would make good friends.
3. KAYLA ANCRUM
Now you ALL KNOW how much I adore and love The Wicker King to the point where I’ve read it twice this year and frequently look at it upon my bookshelves and let out a high, keening wail. (This is true love, obviously.) I never actually tag the author in all my flails because I am shy. So shy. So ridiculously shy…
Anyhow, this happened:
I’M SOBBING. I LOVE HER SO MUCH. (Also 10000% respect that her author photo doesn’t face the camera either. Kinship here omg.)
(Also I find it hilarious how I’m like “Oh authors won’t see me being a flailing fangirl haha!” when I, as an author, search hashtags for my books to spy on people flailing. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s like my logic has holidays, and these holidays are 363 days of the year.)
4. JAY KRISTOFF
He’s really cool ok and famous and I think as tall as 17 people on top of each other. I think I must’ve been fuelled by the power of the new moon (when I am at my strongest) because I replied to a tweet of his randomly. (I think his reply was just a laugh but I only screeshot this much.)
ALSO EVERYONE ELSE THINKS I’M FUNNY TOO I GUESS.
(Also the audio of Nevernight truly is fantastic but also not something you listen to while eating lunch, as I discovered while wondering why my sandwich wasn’t so appealing whilst listening to gory bloodbath scenes.)
5. NEIL GAIMAN
This is absolutely cheating because a retweet doesn’t count as an “author interaction”. But WHO CARES. NEIL GAIMAN RETWEETED ME THIS ONE TIME AND I IMMEDIATELY FOUND THE DOOR TO ANOTHER DARK DIMENSION AND GREW MAGIC BUTTON EYES.
6. RACHEL CAINE
I was super lucky to be on the blog tour for her latest book, Smoke & Iron, and might’ve fangirled quite a little in my blog post. And by “quite a little”, I mean “I splattered my flailing all over the place.”
I hopefully can work this into, like, my resume or something. SKILLS INCLUDE: MAKING AUTHORS SNORT THEIR MORNING COFFEE WHILE LAUGHING. I have peaked.
7. CJ REDWINE
Two things first: (1) this was actually on instagram and I very nearly died, and (2) if I had a glorious name like “CJ REDWINE” I would be writing epic magical fantasy too. Her name is the name of perfection, I swear.
This made me perfectly DIZZY WITH FLAILS. Seriously I can’t even say how much it means when a famous author says congrats to a little tiny newbie.!!! I’m still screaming softly. Forever!! AHH!
8. ELIZABETH MAY
We actually follow each other on twitter too and I so admire the way she doesn’t take nonsense from sexist/racist men. What a complete and utter hero omg. (Also I was super excited when she tweeted that she was on the autistic spectrum too! Absolute proof yet again that autistic authors can be traditionally published. Let none tell you otherwise!)
ANYWAY SHE BOUGHT MY BOOK, NO BIG DEAL. I’M FINE.
9. JULIA EMBER
It’s always excellent to know that I’m not the only one who thinks writing blurbs is an indignant sort of torture. I’m still waiting for publishers and agents to accept pitches via pinterest aesthetic boards and a list of what Hogwarts Houses my characters are in. BUT ANYWAY.
Julia Ember is clearly amazing!! She talked to me!!! Of course she is!!
10. NADINE BRANDES
I think Nadine is possibly the kindest and sweetest person ever?! She actually emails with me on occasion and has encouraged me so much during my debut year. I CRY. I am so grateful. Also (1) Fawkes is brilliant and I love it so much, and (2) she’s hilarious on instagram AND youtube so omg go follow her.
I mean no no no you’re crying about this afjdkslad these are definitely not tears on my face, it is just some odd reflection of the light. (But seriously NADINE IS SO KIND TO ME.)
things we can take away from this post?
★ I am a FANGIRLING DORK and I love it and I love promoting authors and books and am unlikely to stop.
★ Authors are magical creatures.
★ Whilst I am shy of talking to authors, you can 100% be sure not to be shy of me because I’m literally a faNGIRLING DORK. We’ve already established this. Come fangirl with me please. About all things bookish.
★ it is pretty apparent that saying 2 nice words to me will ensure I am a fan for life.
★ I have no idea how to be a proper professional author but I am, absolutely, very cute. So that counts for something.
★ And lastly, I will NOT be telling these authors I gushed about them lmao, so don’t you dare either.
I know what you mean about not wanting to meet your favourite author. Like I would love to, but at the same time not because anxiety.
It’s so amazing that you’ve had the opportunity to speak with such incredible authors. Twitter is one of my favourite platforms ever because authors in particular are so active and want to engage with their readers and fans, it makes the book community so incredible to be a part of. Although you should be including yourself amongst them – to a lot of people you’re gonna be *that* author they’re going to die to talk to 😀
Yes yes exactly! It’s nothing against them it’s just…anxiety. 😭😂I think it’s awesome that twitter can at least still let us flail over our favourite authors at times though! It’s a pretty epic experience (once we get over our nervous ah ahha).
(I still don’t feel like a real author a lot of the time, I confess!😂I’m such a newbie!!)
Aww this list has me feeling the warm fuzzies.
Elizabeth May is one of my favourite people to follow on Twitter (also her dark faerie books are excellent).
Cora | http://www.teapartyprincess.co.uk/
Elizabeth May is so EPIC. I just am in total awe of her!!
I like to think that I’m an even mix of mystical and hysterical. Inwardly mystical—outwardly hysterical. Haha. I’m usually wayyyyy too shy to chat to authors online (despite being an author myself?? Hmm) but several congratulated me on my debut when it was released & that was so, so exciting for me.
omg yes that is a good mix right there. 😂 And I’m the saaaame though. Like I don’t feel like a real author yet. 🙈I wonder when that part catches up?!
I am also a shy turtle and avoid small talks at all cost. I rarely go to book signing events so I resort to Twitter, lol. I agree that being noticed by a favorite author is such a glorious moment. I am all-formal mystical like when I mention an author with my tweets but in actuality I am a rabid manic-hysteric fangirl inside. It’s especially rewarding if the authors RT or like or reply to me. 🙂
Twitter is SO awesome for letting us interact with authors without being able (or wanting to ah haha) meet them! And *hi fives* for hysterical booklovers 😂We try here, we try.
LOL YOUR LAST BULLET POINT THO. Do not worry, fury. my lips are sealed.
wow these are some seriously cool people that have interacted with you–JAY KRISTOFF??? bRO.
dude honestly you HAVE been working so hard to make it to where you are–I’m glad you’ve found authorly friends to support you and flail along with you!! <3
honestly I feel completely opposite to you in terms of meeting my favorite authors (fun fact; you have made the list!) I just wanna meet them and hug them and tell them how much their books meant to me and to share writing adventures and anecdotes and possibly, develop THE friENDSHIP.
Aww you are the BEST THOUGH. 😂✨I mean honestly I LOVE when people tell me they enjoy my work so it makes me feel silly that I always get too shy to tell other authors the same thing. I gotta work on this ah hhah.
SELF FIVE CAUSE WE CANT HIGH FIVE EACH OTHER IRL ok I gotta stop shouting now
ALL THE ALL CAPS. *HI FIVES YOU BACK*
WOOHOOOOO
It’s pretty cool that Neil Gaiman retweeted you!
I have social anxiety, too. You’re definitely not the only one there. 🙂
Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.
Social anxiety really sucks, gah, and it’s so misunderstood as just being rude or unwilling. 😭
Yes, it sure is.
Wow I’d be so so nervous to meet my favorite authors irl!! But I’d definitely meet them if I had the opportunity!
It’s amazing that you’ve been able to talk to so many big authors!!! You deserve to indulge in lots of fangirling 😂😂
Have a mystical and hysterical day!
Having a mystical AND hysterical day seems like the best combination here, right?!😂
Well I sometimes comment on your posts, and you’re an author!! Also had some responses from VE Schwab on twitter, which is always exciting!
awww 😂😂You are NICE. But VE Schwab interactions win lmao, she is a FAMOUS QUEEN.
Oh my gracious YES about Nadine – I’ve been in a Camp NaNo cabin with her for a couple years now and SHE IS THE SWEETEST HUMAN BEAN. So much love to her <3 <3 <3. I also talk to author Mary Weber quite a bit and she's one of the most adorable beings on this planet, so <3 <3 <3.
Also, I am a hysterical being. FOR CERTAIN.
HOW IS NADINE SO LOVELY. And I just also met Mary Weber too recently and we’ve been chatting and ajfdklsad those two are the absolute NICEST and I love how they’re so friendly and willing to mentor we little writer newbies. 😍
Hysterical for the win *hi fives* 😂
I’m going to meet Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera this month and I’M FREAKING OUT.
DUDE, THAT IS AMAZING. I’M SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This is so cool! I know a lot of authors in real life because I spent 11 years in college, and EVERYBODY seems to be an author. I haven’t interacted with many well-known authors online, but a few of them have found my reviews and shared them on their social medias. I freak out so bad whenever that happens. I never tag authors in reviews, so they must be looking for them.
Ahhh that’s so awesome you’ve met tons!! I haven’t met any except…myself?! Does that count?😂 But omg I definitely understand the freak out when the authors share! I actually just now had that happen to Megan Shepherd! I hadn’t tagged her because I’m too nervous but aww it makes my day when they say they enjoy our reviews!
YOU HAVE PEAKED. NEIL GAIMAN RETWEETED YOU IT DOESN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT.
It makes me so happy to see authors of all varying degrees of fame supporting each other. *flails around* I know there are sometimes issues in the book community, but there are days I just love it so much because authors are the coolest people EVER. When Twitter isn’t a dark, angry place, it’s a magical place that allows us to interact with our favorite writers and I still can’t believe we can do that. What is this crazy world we live in.
So A.S. King happens to live in a town like 30 minutes away from us and frequents our local bookstore, so I still remember that time there was a local authors book signing event and she came INTO THE STORE and BOUGHT MY BOOK and HAD ME SIGN IT and I died. And when I was thirteen, I was a contributor to a blog post where we all said what book we wished we’d written, so I said Eleanor & Park, and then Rainbow Rowell responded to the tweet promoting the post and thanked me and I died all over again.
I CAN RETIRE NOW. THE TOP OF THE WORLD HAS BEEN REACHED WHEN NEIL GAIMAN RETWEETED ME.😂 (I wonder if it’s weird being that famous that when you retweet someone they freak out lmao.)
And omg YES. I think it’s beyond incredible when authors and readers support each other! There are definitely issues in the community and some really frustrating cliques that I struggle with? Like I lost a LOT of “friends” when I got published and I don’t understand it, because like debuting is such a rough time and if you show support for someone, they’ll be there for you when it’s your time!! But yeah Twitter CAN be a really epic place for author interactions! I love that.
Omg that’s so awesomeeeeee AS KING IS LIKE FAMOUS. YOU ARE NOW FAMOUS. OMG, KATE.
I’ve been trying to do better with this, because authors are just people and they actually love to hear about you fangirling over their books! So I’ve had some very positive author interactions. You know, online. Because IRL I probably wouldn’t get anything out beyond “fhosiufhuiszhfuihfuihzufhui.” I can’t stop laughing at your Nevernight tweet though, that must have been amazing.
It’s sooo true. Like I KNOW for a fact I adore when people tell me they liked my book, or DM or flail in a comment. But then I feel so shy and awkward of doing it to other books/authors?!😂 I don’t wanna be annoying.😂 But at least it definitely is easier to express love of a book online instead of in real life.😂 I would just…FAIL.
Ok, “demon smoke” had me laughing way hard at my desk. That is such a perfect description! An author liked something I did once, and I just about spontaneously combusted from joy. Mostly, I just squeeeeee’ed so loud that I summoned all the neighborhood dogs.
What a wicked cool list of authors you’ve interacted with. Not at all jealous about Gaiman. Not at all. 🙂
I am utterly serious that I turn into demon smoke to avoid awkward situations. OR ALL SITUATIONS. I’M GREAT LIKE THAT.😂😂
I’ve been blogging for six years and I STILL get nervous speaking to authors online!
I met Laini Taylor in person and I think I just babbled incoherently. Oops. XD
OMG YOU MET THE LAINI TAYLOR QUEEEEEEN AHHHH. 😍😍
People scare me. Honestly, sometimes leaving comments on blogs freaks me out. If I drop into someone’s direct messages, I spend the next several hours feeling like I’ve overstepped. The first time I heard about people tagging authors in negative reviews I was shocked because I wouldn’t dare tag an author in something positive. :’) I’m more awkward in real life than shy nowadays, but I’m still extremely shy on the net.
I totally understand aghaighaig😭And I feel ridiculous because *I* love when people comment or message me, but then I feel SO nervous approaching other people to do the same! Although I really trying to do more comments instead of just liking things (on twitter especially) because it can be so encouraging just to have someone say “congrats”. I’M SO SHY THOUGH. LIFE IS AHRD.
(And omg I’m the same with the tagging authors in reviews.😂I never do it even if it’s positive…unless I interviewed them for a blog tour or something haha.)
Ok, since I’m new here I just want to say I LOVED A THOUSAND PERFECT NOTES LIKE SO MUCH!!!
This was an excellent post – very cake worthy *gives cake in all flavours*
Rhiana xoxo
http://marshmallowharmonies.wordpress.com/2018/09/29/september-recap-goals-achieved-and-awesome-books/
AWW, THIS MAKES MY DAY!!! *gives you all the cake too because you are the sweetest* 💕😍
NO SERIOUSLY, YOUR BOOK WAS AWESOME *happily shares cake*
Also, it means so much that A FULLY PUBLISHED AUTHOR CAME AND COMMENTED ON MY BLOG!! AHHHH!!! xox
I met Angie Thomas at an event she was at in London, and she signed my copy of The Hate U Give. I think I begun our interaction by saying “it’s my birthday tomorrow.” (brilliant opening line) and because of that she wrote Happy Birthday on my copy! It was my birthday treat for the year so it meant a lot.
I don’t think I’m shy so much as “socially awkward and would rather not talk to the majority of people if I could help it” just because most people annoy me.
Aww that’s so sweet though!! I wonder if authors think we’re all adorable dorks by how starstruck we get.😂 I am both shy AND completely socially incompetent so that’s a fun mix. 😂
I wish I had the courage to actually talk to authors, but my shyness really overpowers me 😂 I haven’t talked to very many authors online but I have talked to a couple in person (!!!) and it shouldn’t be as terrifying as I find it. I kind of got overexcited when I met Holly Black and I really hope she didn’t take it badly because I was so embarrassed about it later. I learned my lesson when I got to meet Leigh Bardugo but I ended up going in the opposite direction and barely ended up saying anything because I was so starstruck 😂
We are the saaaame.😭 It’s a problem. Like I know how much it freaking makes my day to get a DM that someone says they love my book, but yet I still am so shy I struggle to tell OTHER authors that I like their work! GAH. My brain is ridiculous. And afjdsalfd Holly Black though and Leigh Bardugo. TRUE QUEENS. I would be a pile of nonsense too. 😂
OMG. The deflowering virgins would have my mom do the exact same thing only family would make it 20 times worse (sounds like a horror movie honestly).
😅 Also I’m 99.9% sure most authors stalk hashtags to see all us bookworms flailing because we’re too shy/anxious/nervous to tag them ourselves.
Tracy Banghart stopped by my area and I really wanted to go up to her and say I really enjoyed her Rebel Wings series but FELT AWKWARD BECAUSE NO ONE WENT UP TO HER. 😭😭😭
I KNOW RIGHT?! 😂😂Nevernight is not…a good book to listen to without the headphones in. Mind you, I didn’t INTEND to…😂 Lmao. Still dead. And I’m sure authors secretly snoop on us.😂I mean I DO, but sometimes I am a sneaky author and should just mind my own business.😂 (Although it’s easier to stumble on negative things if you do that which can e a problem ah haha.)
Aww no!! I loved Tracy Banghart’s book but I’d be the SAME. Too shy and awkward. 😭
I think in real life I’d be much too shy to ever talk to anyone famous. And a retweet definitely counts as author interaction, especially if it is Neil Gaiman!!! I would take that as having officially arrived, haha. And I love your blurbs tweet – I have a copy of Pride and Prejudice where the blurb starts “The heroine of Pride and Prejudice, Lydia Bennet…” so I don’t think publishers and that can take much notice of them anyway :/
Omg same though.😂I don’t think I could ever properly tell an author how much I liked their work, but I have a *slight* better chance of articulating myself online.😂 Slight. I usually just flail and leave them out of it haha. (And like pretty sure I have ASCENDED TO FAME just by having Neil Gaiman retweet me.)
Omggg??! What a typo there for your copy of P&P 😳
OMG YOU have interacted with me on here, but interacting with you on twitter has led me to become a squealing mess at times. I still remember when you followed me back and that was such an amazing experience for me haha!
Interacting with your favourite authors is the best – JK Rowling once hearted my reply to her tweet and that made my day. It isn’t much to Authors but when they interact with their fans, it’s the best feeling ever. AND You’ve had some of the best interactions! I especially love how even the author is aware of how much you’re in love with The Wicker King 🙂
Awww really?!😂I seriously get surprised when people say I’m intimidating or something because I’m over here…like being a flailing dork over MY favourite authors so?! Whoever could be nervous of me.😂
Omg!! JK ROWLING. That equals you’re famous now though, for sure.
Retweets totally count! 😉
THEY TOTALLY DO.😂😂
I love the enthusiasm with which you fangirl! And it’s awesome that you have had so many great interactions with these lovely authors.
Aww THANK YOU.😂I am an entire dork but life’s too short not to be excited about things, right?!
Absolutely.
Cuteness absolutely counts. Every time.
Also, Neil Gaiman’s photo is epic. I feel like he would fit perfectly into an urban fantasy.
(I think I’m probably more hysterical than mystical.)
Neil Gaiman IS so epic. I feel like if he announced he was secretly a wizard, I would 100% believe it.
I think that the moral of this post is that you are more famous than you give yourself credit for! I mean. Neil Gaiman retweets you, and I think you’ve officially made it? Laini Taylor follows you? Made it. I mean. You’re seriously just famous at this point and at least I can be like “yep we’ve been buds since she was Notebook Sisters” and I’ll be like your groupie or something. Along with all these incredible authors, apparently!
Oh, I am absolutely a hysterical being! I don’t often talk to authors on Twitter, because I feel like they don’t want me to bother them with my nonsense? Like- even if it isn’t true? Idk, interacting with people is HARD.
Neil Gaiman retweeting me DEFINITELY means I’m famous now. *twirls* 😂 But omg I think I’m still mostly known as a fangirling blogger instead of an actual writer? Which is probably ok although twitter cares more about my humour tweets than actually when I talk about my book lmao. But AWW CAN I SAY YOU’RE THE BEST. 💛💛And we can be hysterical over epic authors together.😂
Only famous by fraternising with famous authors. 😂 I mean the Neil Gaiman retweet is obviously the pinnacle of my life, I CAN RETIRE NOW. Aww how I’ve grown from being a notebook sister. :’) My little sister lEFT TOO SOON NOW I’M FAMOUS AND SHE’S NOT. (Ok she’s actually doing really well in uni and is far more educated than me but shhh we won’t say such things too loud.)
omg I’m the same though. I feel like a nuisance talking to authors? But then when it comes to me, I whine for people to talk to me.😂I’m just a pretend author tbh.😂
um wow so you’re famous now????
ALSO NEIL FREAKING GAIMAN??????
(throwback to that one time Maggie Stiefvater actually responded to me and I had to be taken to the ER because I had a heart attack)
DEFINITELY FAMOUS. I HAVE REACHED THE PINNACLE AND CAN RETIRE NOW. omggg you talked to the Stiefvater queen 😍
Ugh I’ve never been able to meet an author because I live in freaking ALASKA which is basically like Australia but cold in terms of things like that never happening here. XD But I don’t think I would actually talk to one if I had the chance to cuz I’m too shy too and Idk what I would say. XD And I don’t really talk to authors online, but I realized I talk to YOU online and you’re and author now so you count! 😀
And a bunch of blogger friends I made (finally! I have blogger friends! :D) on a group chat app put together a bookish Blogoween event so I decided to join and we did the Halloween Creatures Tag 2.0 and I tagged you for it if you would like to do it. 🙂 I thought mythical creatures sounded right up your alley. 😛
Omg I didn’t actually realise you lived in Alaska! Now your blog name makes even more sense. 😂 (But same though…I really am so shy. I just want to flail about their work with other fans instead of actually TO them. Which is silly because I love when people talk to me about my book?!? I AM A QUANDARY OF CONTRIDICTIONS HERE.😂)
I’ll come check out your post! I don’t really do Halloween though unfortunately sorry!😂
This post makes me so, so happy, really <3 <3 It's so cool that you got to interact with so many authors online – I really love it when that happens, even if it's just one like or a retweet or something, it is the BEST feeling ever, really <3
IT IS. Our heroes speak to us ahhhh!! (I am ridiculous and I know it.😂)
I talk to authors online sometimes, I don’t think I’m followed by any authors that I love, but I have occasionally tagged authors when I want to flail about their books and they’ve been lovely. VE Schwab liked one of my Instagram posts once and I nearly died of excitement!
I’ve been lucky enough to meet several of my favourite authors IRL and although I am pretty shy and kind of socially awkward, all the authors I’ve met have been lovely and really put me at ease, so I’m not as nervous about meeting them now.
Definitely a hysterical being, my fangirling knows no limits!
Omg that’s so awesome Schwab liked your post!! AHHHHHHH. And I’m glad you enjoyed meeting some of your favourite authors too!
Oh my gosh! There have been several time on Twitter where I’ve fangirled out while chatting or interacting with favorite authors – sometimes it’s exhausting!
Check out my TTT, my book bingo update, and my FraterFest Readathon TBR
It’s tough work being a fan.😂😂
Ahh same on being way more outgoing online than in real life! Why is talking to other humans so much easier from behind a screen than face to face?? *sigh*
Anyway, it’s really cool that you’ve interacted with so many authors! Jealous 😂 The only author I’ve ever really spoken to online is…. well, you 😂 And that’s just because I followed your blog before you were published… I don’t think I’d dare to so much as comment on a post by any other author, I mean what if they notice my existence, we can’t have that, nooooo 😬😂
Andrea @ https://spaceshipsvampiresandsecretagents.blogspot.com/
IT IS JUST SO MUCH EASIER ONLINE, RIGHT?! Like people online laugh when I say I’m shy, buuuut it’s different, peoples!! I can talk to a 100 random people a day here, but like IRL? No thank you. I need 12 working days between interactions. Or 12 months. Whatever works.😂
N’awww. I still don’t feel like a real author though.😂Maybe just a blogging dork.😂
Okay, but not to brag – once Orhan Phamuk retweeted me. Soooo!
I am just the opposite. I am ok in real life (I guess) but I get very self conscious online. I don’t dare to talk to anyone online, only exception being the comments on blogs. And even I don’t think someone would read/talk/reply to them.
SO needless to say I haven’t talked to any authors at all.
Aww that’s interesting how we’re opposite with IRL vs online interactions!! But it’s tough right?!😂We want to make a good impression is all!😂
This was such a fun post! Nadine Brandes is the only one of these authors that I’ve talked to online. She is the loveliest!! I actually don’t interact with authors online a whole lot (although one time a year or so ago you commented on one of my Instagram photos which was so cool!;) ) but I’ve met a couple in person. I met Leigh Bardugo about a year ago and was SO EXCITED AND NERVOUS because she is my favorite ever. She signed my book and I asked her about all the Hamilton references in the SoC duology (aha that keeps autocorrecting to eulogy). I wrote her a letter and gave her that because I knew I wasn’t going to coherently get out everything I wanted to say. Then I met Victoria Aveyard this past spring which wasn’t as big of a deal for me honestly, but I was with a friend who’s obsessed with her books so I just let my friend do the talking 🙂
NADINE IS GOLDEN. I love her so much!! And aww I feel honoured to be counted as an author interaction although I still mostly just feel like a blogger?! But omg you met Leigh Bardugo 😍 THAT’S SO AWESOME.
I talk to authors online all the time. Occasionally though, I think… maybe I shouldn’t talk to them too much or they’ll think I’m creepy. Especially if I’ve written 700+ pages of fanfiction based on their works. I’ve talked to several of the authors on your list (Laini Taylor, Akemi Bowman, Jay Kristoff) and when they reply or like my tweets I’m fangirling too, LOL.
I’m pretty shy IRL though. I might need a sprinkling of magical fairy dust to meet these authors in real life. I’d make myself, though. The only authors I’ve met IRL have been political authors.
Ah ahhaah. I always am scared I’m wasting their time by tagging them on twitter and such. And I know probably MOST of them appreciate the flails and encouragement, but I’m just so shy and agaksdl *hides forever* 😂 It’s so nice when the big famous authors take time to say thank you though. 😍😍😍
aauuughh all the nice authors. <3
ISN'T NADINE JUST THE FRIENDLIEST AND SWEETEST THOUGH OH MY GOSH
she is so nice
NADINE IS SO NICE I CAN’T EVEN WITH HOW LOVELY SHE IS.
I’ve talked to local authors at events (because I joined by local bookclub and they hold launches and stuff for YA visiting authors). It took me aaagggeeess to even start talking to the others in my book club, but I sort of am now, which is nice, and I have managed to meet some nice authors through those events. I am okay one on one but in groups I just don’t really speak because I get quite shy. I used to be a whole lot worse when I was younger, and not good at meeting new people at all, but I think I have worked really hard over the years to get better at it, but it is still a scary thing for me. and therefore….. no I don’t tag authors on my posts about their books. I feel weird about it. I guess I have done it once or twice but not normally anyway. 🙂
I’m very much with you on the shy thing.😂*shy hi five* But I’m glad you still got to speak to some!!
Some of my favorite author interactions actually happened within the past year!
– I tweeted how lovely it was that the first Runaways comic (from Marvel, written by Rainbow Rowell) came out the week of my birthday, and Rainbow said happy birthday!
– Tamora Pierce, one of my favorite authors, does a reading and signing at my local Barnes and Noble almost every year, so I’ve met her and made her sign my books multiple times. She comes in for a young writer’s conference every year, and her readings also feature super talented high school writer’s as well.
– Unfortunately, Tamora Pierce couldn’t make it to this year’s reading. Her replacements were NK Jemisin and Maggie Stiefvater. They had a Q&A session and signing. My soul left my body when I got to the front of the line.
– Based solely on my interactions with authors, I am a hysterical being, since I usually turn into a pile of goo and cannot handle basic conversations when face to face with these beings.
OMG YOU MET MAGGIE STIEFVATER. YOU ARE OFFICIALLY THE BEST HERE AND FAMOUS BY ASSOCIATION AHHHHH. (She’s my favourite author.😂I know it’s hard to tell.) ajfkdsl but meeting authors must still be just so so amazing, even if I’m an upturned hermit crab who would probably flee instead of actually speak to them. But !!! Rainbow Rowell saying happy birthday is also huge!!!
Awwww I smiled so much when reading this!! It’s so cool you’ve gotten to interact with some of your fave authors!!
Nabila | Hot Town Cool Girl
I’m so glad you enjoyed reading it!😂
It’s so exciting to watch you flail over them and actually interact with them.
Makes me think omg normal people can talk to authors? Be friends? WHAT SORCERY IS THIS?
