As a bookworm, it’s basically part of my job description to freak out.
And this is GREAT because I’m super good at freaking out and panicking over life in general. Like, forget Panic! At The Disco and let’s go for Panic! At The Everywhere. It’s a skill, I tell you. And book blogging has honed my freakout abilities even more. Bless it.
Now you might be sitting there, a stolid Vulcan or possible Ice Queen of the frozen isles or just a general unemotional turnip thinking, “I don’t even freak out, Cait, what are you on about right now.” But you probably DO. There are just may different wants to express freaking out. Here, let me explain.
- Actual shrieking and general noises like dead seals dying upon the waves.
- Your eyes going slightly wider as you stare in utter horror / love at some book related thing, like your preorder being shipped or someone dog-earing your book and therefore you must plot their death.
- Just smiling. SMILING A LOT LIKE A CHESHIRE CAT. It can be silent smiling!
- Actually physically jumping up and down, which seems like a lot of work quite frankly, but I hear it’s popular amongst people with limbs.
- WRITING IN ALL CAPS UPON THE INTERNET WITH VIGOROUS PASSION.
- Screaming internally.
- Talking very fast and very much.
- Just being super excited on the inside, so it’s like a freak out explosion behind your face, but you’re keeping it together on the outside because you don’t express emotion super well.
- SHAKING YOUR SISTER BY THE SHOULDER AND SHOUTING.
- Losing ALL YOUR WORDS and just making a high keening noise forever because of the level of Non-Chill.
- Forgetting to breathe and dying.
Now I don’t recommend trying all of these so much??? Especially the last one. Unless you are a Winchester and then, WELL HAVE AT IT, FRIENDS! I know you’ll come back! I personally am more of the “freaking out on the inside” sort of person and then using all caps online. Occasionally, in the presence of my family, I may suck in sharp breath, but I am relatively a chill looking person on the outside. And by “chill” I mean I have a resting murder face.
I like to internalise my freaking out and will probably lose all my hair from it eventually.
Which leads me to the actual important discussion of the moment:
Which I have been kindly tagged to do by Meri @ Life Stained Pages! (THANK YOU!) And while I did recently shout at you over my favourite books of 2017 so far…it’s time to have a small holler at the highs and lows, too. Also feel free to snabble these questions for your own blogs too!
THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR SO FAR
THIS IS A HARD QUESTION. 9 SEAS PERISH EVERY TIME A BOOKWORM GETS ASKED THIS QUESTION. I will, however, calm my rabidly flailing soul and just nominate A Conjuring Of Light and The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice and Virtue as my top two. Because I’m so obsessed with both these books’ characters.
But I have other favourites. This is like choosing between my children.
If they all rise up against me and murder me in the night — YOU KNOW WHY.
BEST SEQUEL OF THE YEAR SO FAR
I think my brain might be a bit broken here, but apparently for some reason it thinks “best” equals “WHICH BOOK DESTROYED YOU THE MOST, CAIT, GIVE IT ALL THE AWARDS.” Which seems ridiculous to be honest. But here we are.
Which books huuuuuurt?!??
THAT WOULD BE THESE WRETCHES. Lord of Shadows and Our Dark Duet were both as good, if not a smidge better, than their older siblings. They’re also downright as attractive as their predecessors. And both coordinated in being blue to represent the state of your emotions afterwards. #nice
NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO
This year I just leaped onto the abyss of darkness that is “I HAVE TOO MANY BOOKS AND WILL NEVER CATCH UP”. I blame this on several things like:
- (a) a pretty huge house move
- (b) publishers coming up with 93898 books in the time I can read 2
- (c) the fact that I’ve been writing more > reading less
- (d)I will literally blame anyone and everyone I can…you, myself, the local leviathan, the fact we only have one moon, the fact I haven’t seen Wonder Woman, and even my new bookshelf which is 1.2 centimetres shorter than my old one and that’s just rude.
But I would like to read these ASAP.
TOMORROW OR THE DAY AFTER OR IN NEVERLAND.
MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR AUTUMN / WINTER
Considering it is Winter in the dear land of Australia right now * I’d say I’m really looking forward to Godsgrave and Wonder Woman, Before She Ignites (DRAGONS) and They Both Die At The End!
Look I have a contemporary on this list!! Please take a moment to be proud of my fantasy soul and I. We’re working hard.
(It won’t happen again.)
* IF AUSTRALIA WOULD CHILL AND REMEMBER IT. It’s going to be 26 celsius this week!! That’s 78 fahrenheit. THAT IS NOT WINTER.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT OF THE YEAR SO FAR
- WHEN THE MOON WAS OURS: okay so it’s still 3 stars and still beautiful! But I was just really disappointed I wasn’t obsessed with it like I was over the author’s debut. ALL THE SADNESS IS MINE. There was literally…no…plot…
- EVER THE HUNTED: So cliche I fell over and died. The the female protagonist spent 78% of the book commenting on how good the boy smelled. THEY WERE TREKKING THROUGH THE JUNGLE??? No one smells good after trekking, woman. You need help.
- THE DRAGON’S PRICE: Dragons but yet…super super racist and stupidly boring.
- TRAVELER: Okay so the premise was a writer girl’s character turns to life…which is cool, right?!? WELL IT WASN’T. Her character didn’t turn to life, she ended up a Special Snowflake with as much personality as my left sock, and it had an inaccurate and mildly offensive portrayal of Autism. (Where the girl literally wished her brother wasn’t ASD so she’d have the ease of communicating with him her way instead of his way. And I…can’t…even.)
BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE YEAR SO FAR
I did NOT expect to love A List of Cages as much as I did?!??! It’s beautiful and heartbreaking and such good disability rep AND I HAD AN EMOTION OVER IT.
What is this.
Plus Queens of Geek just…WOAH OKAY. It’s actually about Australians (!!!) and again with the excellent disability rep! Plus super cute and feel good?! Plus one girl lugged a boxset of her favourite books around a ComiCon for hours and #relatable.
NEW FAVOURITE AUTHOR
I’m going to shout at Cristin Terrill. If you haven’t read Here Lies Daniel Tate yet — WHAT ARE YOU DOING. It’s so mind twisty and excellently written. Con artist teenagers and missing boys and messed up families and so many sandwiches.
Still not sure what’s going on with his face though. I suppose we all have our off days.
YOUR NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER
LAZLO STRANGE FROM STRANGE THE DREAMER. IT JUST ABSOLUTELY IS. He broke his nose because he walked into a wall because he was reading fairy tales. He loves the library and books more than people. #Relatable He’s in love with magic and monsters. #EvenMoreRelatable When he gets his pay day he decides to go all out and be extravagant and buy himself nice warm socks. #WELLIFTHISISNTME
He read while he walked. He read while he ate. The other librarians suspected he somehow read while he slept, or perhaps didn’t sleep at all.
BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY
I think I shed my only tear back in 1642, to be honest. But while I was super emotionally distraught and freaking out over A Conjuring of Light and Lord of Shadows, I didn’t actually cry. Or even tear up.
The only book that’s made me cry this year is MINE that I wrote. And that was probably because it was so bad. JUST KIDDING! I killed a character and hurt my own emotions. 1/10, will not repeat. Next time don’t get so attached, Cait.
A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY
LOOK SOME OF THESE ARE EVEN CUTE FLUFF!! Others are…I don’t know why. Certain Dark Things made me happy because it’s super bloody and dark, but has really interesting twists on vampires. Who would’ve thought vampires could be cool!?? DON’T JUDGE ME. IT MADE ME HAPPY.
Everything All At Once had SUCH bookworm and writer appreciation. And When Dimple Met Rishi is so ridiculously adorable I can’t even.
MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK SO FAR
I’m going to be super shallow and assume this means the books looks. Because I mean..what really matters here except for (A) how gorgeous a cover is, and (B) how much I can hug it, and (C) if I can abscond with it to Guadeloupe for marriage.
The Reckless series cover rebrand though. WELL, I SAY, GOOD SIR. I SAY.
And I maintain a rainbow threw up on The Crown’s Fate, which is excellent because I actually bought myself a copy because I appreciate the rainbow catastrophe aesthetic so much.
So, we freak out by pestering our friends and not shutting up about books ever and smiling like maniacs because that’s what you do😂
And…we can’t answer your second question. Our mind has gone blank.
Those seem like most excellent ways to freak out!😂 Smiling wildly is THE BEST.
Ha!!This looks like a really fun tag to do. Ugh I NEED ti read the Lady Midnight and Lord if the Shadows books!! It’s been on my TBR for so long yet it is intent on running away from me. ( I can’t think why….)
x Skye // A little inkling // alittleinklings.blogspot.com
YES YES READ THE GLORY AND PAIN THAT IS LADY MIDNIGHT AND LORD OF SHADOWS. *hollers into the darkness about them* So much perfection. So much.
Love the post!! I am so glad you are so happily freaked out about ACOL because I am reading it right now and I cannot wait to dive fully into it. You definitely should pick up The Bear and the Nightingale sooner. It was one of my best books of 2017. I loved it. I want to read STtrange the Dreamer soon too. Everyone raves about it so much
There is so so soooo much to freak out over when it comes to Schwab. SHE IS PERFECTION AND ALSO HER BOOKS HER. <3 And ohh ohh I will get to The Bear And the Nightingale VERY soon!! I literally have no excuse. I've owned it for like 6 months now? Shame.😂
this is so relatable??? I generally just scream on the inside and open my eyes wide and maybe shed a tear (or it’s John Green and I cry my eyes out) but when there’s loads of fluff or puns i can’t help it and I smile like the Cheshire cat (still forever confused because i didn’t expect it to be called that in English. in German, we call this cat the grinning cat. I think that makes way more sense. where/what/who is Cheshire even??? ahem, anyway)
but, I have to be slightly angry with you Cait. you haven’t seen Wonder Woman??? the movie cleared my skin, cured my anxiety and made me cry, laugh AND have goosebumps. now I’m ready to punch everyone who annoys me or makes a sexist comment, ever. HAH. uh, so, it’s worth watching, you know? it really is.
I have nooo idea what books I haven’t read yet that I should because I’m bad at staying up to date with everyone and everything but I’m okay with that because I will read the things eventually, I hope. but I for sure stayed updated with Rick Riordan and Cassandra Clare so that’s the most important stuff covered.
I will now add three more books you talked about in this blog post to my TBR list and despair because I just can’t order any more books right now ahhh
AHHHH, THANK YOU, TAMI. *flails happily* And yES I smile reading too sometimes! I have laughed out loud really loudly and scared my dog once.😂 And I think I had a single tear in my eye for Perks of Being A Wallflower, but that was like 5 years ago and won’t happen again. #VulcanQueen
I knooooow. I don’t like cinemas at ALL though. They freak me out.😂 Plus I don’t even have a local cinema hhaaha. So I’ll wait till it comes out!
The same thing happened to me with my cat ^^ He always looks at me like I’m crazy when I suddenly start laughing…. and maybe I am, who knows
You don’t even have a local cinema??? I thought you live in the north of Australia and not somewhere in the middle of the desert ^^ I don’t think I could survive that. But yes, definitely watch it when it’s released!
OH WELL HI.
I’m freaking out about how it is past MID-YEAR and I still have NOT posted my response to this fabulous tag. HELP CAIT. I’m kind of moving blogs and want to do this on my NEW blog and that’s going to be up in running in AUGUST so obviously, I seek your advice!
I definitely think bookworms are prone to freaking out. I MEAN how else are we supposed to react when a book IS JUST TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? What else do we do when we Fangirl? Can you suggest something else to do while waiting for new exciting releases? NO, MY DEAR PINEAPPLE, YOU CAN’T. The only thing you can do is PANIC, and then FREAK-OUT.
I usually just turn on my caps lock key and JUST HASHTAG IT, okay? The best way to freak-out is flail around with your hands and then die, come back to life and eat food. I RECOMMEND THIS. Try it. #noregrets What’s your favourite way to freak out??? I MUST KNOW.
I feel like I’m mentioning Lazlo in all my comments of yours. *laughs nervously* WHO SAID anything about being obsessed? Lazlo is ADORKABLE, i can’t even! But then he was special at the end, BUT I DIDN’T MIND but like now he has blue skin??? I LIKED THE GREY BETTER, don’t you?
CAIT, don’t kill me. BUT i tried Reckless and DNF! I SUPER wanted to like but it just wasn’t for me?? I’M SORRY! Forgive moi?
A recently published book I MUST READ RIGHT NOW IS…well A Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue because you have just been screaming over it for like ever. And Goodbye Days (i think it’s new) because I LOVED TSK
I THINK MAYBE IT SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO BE THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR??? I’M NOT READY???? *cries quietly and panics over to-do list* Ohhh, moving blogs sounds exciting!! And BIG. Good luck with the move!!
And definitely *nods* I think freaking out (in some form) is like just part of the bookworm existence tbh. We get so involved in books we just have to freak out?? wE MUST. And also dying + coming back to life = very excelletn and ultimate way to show your appreciation.
HEY I MENTION LAZLO IN LIKE EVERY 2ND POST. YOU’RE FINE.😂 (I’m glad of his plot twist though!! It so suits. I can’t wait for more.😍)
I’M REALLY GOOD AT USING ALL CAPS ON THE INTERNET TOOOO
Can I just say. That part in Strange the Dreamer had me squealing OUT LOUD. BECAUSE ME.
In other news. I am drawing a blank on a recently published book I want to read because there are FAR TOO MANY 😣
WE ARE GRAND AT ALL CAPS. WE ARE SO GOOD AT THIS SOMEONE SHOULD HIRE OUR ALL CAP ENTHUSIASM. *hi fives* 😂
Omafjdaksldj STRANGE THE DREAMER. THAT PRECIOUS LAZLO. (See??! All cap excellence.) He is the truest best.
Hunted is really excellent, I read it a few weeks ago and was so impressed at how the myths combined. I hyperventilate and make whimpering or cheering noises when I’m freaking out. I have been in a huge short story kick lately, so I’d love to read Because You Love to Hate Me asap.
Ohhh GOOD. Because I’d heard mixed things about it and tbh I’m putting it off like nothing else. I’m ashamed.😂 But that’s awesome that you’re a focal freaker-outer (shh it’s totally a legit term).😂
I freak out with lots of squealing and laughing and crying and curling up in a tight ball on the bed and more squealing. I’m very expressive with my fangirling. 😛 i also frequently have to rub the sides of my head because it feels like It’s going to explode.
Most crazily, ~Olive
You are a fantastic fangirl FOR SURE.😂
😀
Yay for mid-year book freak-outs! I sort of did this without being tagged because it works so well as a mid-year roundup. I’m sad to say that I haven’t actually read any of the books on this list, but several of them I plan to read, so.
I tend to talk to books. Or yell at them. Specifically, I yell at the characters when they make bad choices. Or I just make a lot of of distressed noises and then occasionally burst out laughing because someone did something particularly funny. As you can tell, I’m not a quiet reader. (That said, I can and do restrain myself when other people are around.)
One book that came out recently that I really need to read is Thick as Thieves by Megan Whalen Turner because I’ve waited AGES for more Eugenides but the library won’t give it to me. My life is a tragedy.
It’s super fun to do these sort of mid-year recaps right?!😂 But yayyy that you might read some of these someday!
And yelling at books and characters = VERY RELATABLE. Sometimes I make dark hissing noises at my book because…seriously. Characters, no. Just…no. Think about what you’re doing. *cries quietly*
I seriously need to read something by Megan Whalen Turner!
Exactly. And they never actually listen, which is immensely frustrating.
Yes, yes, you do!
Hey:) loved your post, as always, but this comment is slightly (not really, it’s 1000000%) different to the topic of this blog post. I’m sorry it’s irrelevant, I hope I’m not being rude by not praising this post as much as I want to. But I really need to ask you this important question because you’re the only one who knows about this stuff and who I believe will reply to me. I’m currently struggling with my outline for this trilogy and a thought crossed my mind, I’ve been focusing so much on making the first book sounding intriguing and awesome and I didn’t really focus on making the next two books even awesomer (is that even a word?) My question is “how do you write book 2 and any other sequels better than the book before it?” Appreciate it if you answer xx
Love you!
Of course you’re not being rude! You’re welcome to ask things any time. Although I can’t promise I can give super helpful answers BECAUSE I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT I’M DOING MOST OF THE TIME. 😂😂
So one thing to ask yourself when plotting a trilogy is: do you NEED to have the trilogy? If the first book has all the awesome stuff in it, are you sure it’s not a standalone? (I’ve had to pull myself back from wanting a series before when it really just needed one book to tell the story! It happens!) If you definitely need 3 books to tell the story, maybe brainstorm more? Have you written the first book? Sometimes writing it will spark more ideas for sequels. Also whenever I get stuck with plotting, I put on some epic music and go for a walk. It can help get some scene ideas coming.😂
I hope some of this might help! Sometimes you have to not rush yourself, too, with plotting. It’ll come!
Thanks for the help:) xx, also i was wondering when you will post your room tour 2.0???? I’m so excited and impatient for it that it’s killing me!! haha xx
………..
You’re gonna read a book in Neverland and your last cry was in 1642?!? OMFG, I love you, marry me!
.
.
.
Wait. What? Oh that husband over there? Nah. We’re totally polyamorous, just join us 😛
HUG ME, MY DEAR. WE ARE OBVIOUSLY MEANT TO BE.
Oh, Cait, why are you so damn relatable?? Also, I might have just ended up adding a LOT of books to my TBR. Stop doing this to me.
To answer your first question, I generally show my freak out-ness with a lot of internal screeching and an outward gasp at most in the presence of other creatures. When I’m alone though, there’s usually some squealing that’s too loud for even dogs to hear.
About your second question……………. HAHAHAHA. I still haven’t read all the books in my TBR from the 1800s (literally, though), so why would you even??
In all seriousness, I would say A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and Here Lies Daniel Tate are at the top of an insanely long list.
Also, do you mind if I use this tag?
OMG ME? RELATABLE? THIS IS GOOD NEWS.😂 And I am pleased I caused havoc on your TBR. Mwhahah….my work here is done.😂
And of course not! GO FOR IT! I’d love to see your answers! 😀
I LOVE this!! I have to laugh because I definitely talk so much and so fast when I’m freaking out! Haha! I also tend to tell EVERYONE with lots of squeals, sighs, and if online, lots of exclamation points. 😉
The book I had really really really really REALLY wanted to read this year I just read: Sara Ella’s Unraveling. SO good and had a plot twist that wouldn’t let me read another page until it fully soaked in. So very good, but I’m also really REALLY looking forward to reading Sara Baysinger’s White Dawnl. 🙂
Exclamation marks are GLORIOUS THINGS!!!! I USE THEM QUITE A LOT. YOU MIGHT NOTICE.😂
Hi Cait! This blog post was just beautiful. All the feels. Three words. Lord of Shadows. Aaaahhh and the photos are so beautiful. Love the gifs. Just a really wonderful post! <3
Aww, thank you, Laila! I APPRECIATE THAT. And afjdskalfd Lord of Shadows slays but is yet perfection.
I SHOW MY FREAKING OUT NESS BY SCREAMING AT PEOPLE IN COMMENTS AND IN VARIOUS OTHER PLACES.
I NEED TO READ A GENTLEMEN’S GUIDE. And also. Um. I can’t think of anything else so I will give you a list of books that I am excited for that AREN’T published yet.
– Wonder Woman: Warbringer (!!!)
– Renegades (!!!)
– Warcross (!!!)
– Forest of a Thousand Lanterns (!!!)
I’m so so excited for Renegades and Forest of A Thousand Lanterns tooooooooo.😍
I did this tag last month. We both picked They Both Die At The End for an anticipated release. I can’t wait to read that one. I just got Cold Summer, so I hope we both like it.
EXCELLENT. We are anticipating the GOOD THINGS.
Those Reckless books looks so pretty!
They ARE. They are so so gorgeous.😍
Cait, I ordered Strange the Dreamer today! It has been on my wishlist for who knows how long even. Oh, and guess who just started the Shades of Magic series 🙂 Also, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue sounds very Dorian Gray-ish…dare I?
OH EXCELLENT. I APPROVE OF YOUR LIFE CHOICES 100% And fajdskajk I love Shades of Magic so hopefully you love it.😍 And I have no idea about Dorian Gray so I can’t comment there. 😂
Well, Cait, you have successfully done it again. I have just requested The Weight of Feathers and Strange the Dreamer from my library — purely because you keep waxing poetic over them.
EXCELLENT. Now I will just wait in nervous anticipation to see if you like them.😂
YOU USED A GIF OF SAWYER FROM LOST. I DIED.
ALSO I NEEEEED TO WATCH SUPERNATURAL EVEN IF THE LEVELS OF VIOLENCE MAKE ME THROW UP BECAUSE THAT SMOL CINNAMON ROLL AHJFDSAFHJKJHFD.
I also died at that Gif. Sawyer was my favorite from Lost:) I have a list of the books he read on the show and I want to try them all lol
What a cool idea!!! He wasn’t my favorite by any means, but he had his moments. Those snarky quips, tho!!
Lol I have a tendency to like the characters nobody else does……. I’m a fan of Sass and his nick names for everybody always made me laugh 🙂 Who was your favorite if you don’t mind me asking?
His sass was fabulous but I’m afraid I found him immature most of the time… I don’t mind at all!! I love fangirling with other Lost lovers!!! My favorite was Jack. He is just a precious little cinnamon roll of goodness!! Desmond comes in close second, though! 🙂
I HAVEN’T SEEN LOST BUT YOU’RE WELCOME.
I think you would like?????
I freak out by quite a few on your list the two most common being shaking my sister by the shoulders and freaking out on the inside but it not showing on the outside bc #whatareemotions #icryontheinsidelikeawinner #internallyscreamstillthedayidie
Shaking one’s sister and freaking out is VERY VERY WISE. I WOULD DO THAT TOO. Internally screaming = relatable.
I definitely freak out by either smiling and making a strange squeeking sound, or heavily breathing and sobbing! I have learnt not to underestimate my power to do both at the same time! I really need to finish Into The Water by Paula Hawkins, that was a highly anticipated book for me, and I’m only about half way through at the moment! Hope you get to all of your anticipated releases 🙂
Freaking out in ALL the ways is highly reasonable. We are actually talented bookworms, amirite?!😂
Yep. All caps and freaking out on the inside is how I roll, too. I’ll also text my friends at a non-stop speed until they tell me to slow down and breathe, but how is somebody supposed to do that when a fictional character has just died????
You haven’t seen “Wonder Woman” yet?!?! OMG YOU MUST FIX THIS. It’s so freaking good. I’m seeing it again today. For a third time. xD
I’m frustrated that my library hasn’t gotten Eliza and Her Monsters yet, because it’s been on my TBR list as soon as I saw the cover (okay, and read what it was about, I didn’t just base it on looks).
CRISTIN TERRILLLLLLLL, I LOVED All Our Yesterdays (time travel makes me happy), so pretty much anything else she writes, I’ll read.
THERE IS NO SLOWING DOWN AND BREATHING WHEN WE MUST TALK ABOUT FICTIONAL CHARACTERS. LET’S BE REAL HERE.😂
I will probably see Wonder Woman when it’s out tbh.😂 I really hate cinemas, ugh.
OH I HAVE OFFICIALLY GOT ELIZA AND HER MONSTERS IN MY POSSESSION AND I’M JUST SLIGHTLY FREAKING OUT WITH EXCITE.
FIRST; THE UNRELATED THING. DSAFSJDFJDFJK <- (one way of freaking out btw) anyway, the other day, I was looking for something to read and decided to browse your Goodreads shelves (not a stalker I swear) and I saw The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue and I thought "Well, I'll give it a try but won't expect too much". Actually, I rolled a dice to decide which book to read first because I had many options (don't judge, I must decide somehow). I read the first chapter and I WAS COMPLETELY HOOKED, LIKE IT'S BEEN SO LONG SINCE I READ A BOOK THAT GIVES THAT FEELING THAT ONLY A GOOD YA BOOK CAN GIVE. I AM NOT FINISHED BUT YES YES YES THANK YOU.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand, one way I freak out when the book is too overwhelming is that I put the book down and start walking around. My mind needs to digest it before I can continue XD
P.S. Thank you for leaving comments on my blog. It always makes my day 😀
Just smacking the keyboard with AFDJSAKLD is perfect. :’) RELATABLE.
And bahaha, I do not mind anyone stalking my goodreads.😂 And zomg isn’t The Gentleman’s Guide endless amounts of perfect? I literally ACHE because I love it so much.
(Also you’re most welcome! I try to always comment back but sometimes I run out of time. BUT I LOVE READING ALL THE BLOGS!)
Ahh I love your posts so much!! I freak out pretty much the same way you do… although I am sometimes known to talk the ear off anyone who will listen (usually one of my poor brothers).
Omg thank you, Em!! That’s so kind of you!! I will talk the ear off my sister if she sits to listen…she usually doesn’t.😂
I AM OBSESSED WITH STRANGE THE DREAMER. Lazlo (also, what a cool name???) was just amazing and WAAAH the ending made me so sad — when can I have the sequel?!?!?!?
LAZLO IS THE BEST NAME AND THE BEST BOOK BOY. THIS IS JUST THE FACT.
I show my freaking-outness by squealing like a piglet or making dying whale noises. In extreme cases, I will also flap my arms, consequently hitting myself in the face. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
ANYWAY, I NEED to read Strange the Dreamer and Lord of Shadows! I can’t believe I haven’t got to those yet! I absolutely LOVE Laini Taylor’s books so why I haven’t read Strange the Dreamer yet…I don’t know. But I clearly need to have a look at my life choices.
When Dimple Met Rishi looks SO CUTE! I bought it on my Kindle this weekend (it was 99p on the Amazon store – YAS!) so I’m hoping to get to it soon! 😀
Dying Whale noises = RELATABLE. 😂 And omg you need all of the Strange the Dreamers and Lords of Shadows. *sobs at their perfection* They’re both like MASSIVE, but worth every amazing perfect page.
I internalize most of my book freak outs because my family simple doesn’t understand, although I have been known to occasionally bounce in my seat because it’s just too much freaking out to contain! And there may or may not have been hyperventilating. No tears though (well, except that one time, but we don’t talk about that).
I haven’t read any of these books and now my TBR pile is even larger, so it will totally be your fault if I’m found dead one day, buried under a humongous pile of books that toppled over! #booknerdproblems #thestruggleisreal
Family’s can be SUCH downers about freaking out *sighs* They just do not get the fangirl life, do they?!
I will come DIG YOU OUT FROM BENEATH YOUR TBR. Like the good friend I am. :’)
Firstly, I keep on meaning to mention it but I forget: I LOVE your color-coordinated bookcase! It looks beautiful! Now I want to arrange my books like that…… 🙂 🙂
I show my freaking-ness by throwing the book across the room (true story: I did it while reading “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”) gasping and nearly passing out/sobbing (when a character dies–did this several times while reading Harry Potter), and slamming the book shut while saying “Seriously? He/she just HAD to do that!”
I really want to read “Cold Summer” but there’s already 35 holds on it at our library…..*sob* Also, “Girl Out of Water” looks interesting…..
And you MUST see “Wonder Woman”! It’s amazing, although I almost cried at the end……
Awww, thank you, Allison!! *flails happily* I love ordering things by rainbow!
That seems like a perfectly reasonable way to freak out.😂 I have slammed shut a few books myself! I lowkey threw one on my bed the other day. Not HARD. But still. Ahhhhh!!!
I will probably wait till Wonder Woman is out tbh.😂
I just purchased The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue on a whim, and now I”m even more excited to read it!
DUDE, YOU ARE MAKING EXCELLENT LIFE CHOICES THAT IS FOR SURE.
This is a BRILLIANT list and I just can’t even keep up with you. If you’re freaking out then I must be dead. D-e-a-d. SO MANY BOOKS! Hm– I freak out by crawling into my SO’s study and thrashing on the floor while I complain about how little time I have to read/blog. Then he tells me to get my butt up and go do one of those things, because I’m just wasting time thrashing around like a fish on land. He might be right.
Books I needed to read a million years ago: When Dimple Met Rishi, Queens of Geek, This Savage Song/Our Dark Duet, Strange the Dreamer, The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and every other book published in 2017. Except for Gemina. O_o
Honestly freaking out and just laying on the floor howling is an EXCELLENT method of getting things done.😂 I thoroughly do that too. (I mean, sure we succeed at nothing, but at least we can freak out well?!??)
OMG THOSE ARE ALL SUCH GOOD BOOKS. I LOVE ALL THOSE ONES ON YOUR LIST THERE AHHHHH!!!
I’m glad I am not the only one to freak out alone. Also, now I must freak out more– because you LOVE all the books I just listed!!! Where should I start? Which one should come first?!
Omg I’m not even kidding I love ALL those books you listed like 500%. But I think This Savage Song probably wins for the most loved?! And closely followed by The Gentleman’s Guide. JUST READ THEM ALL AT THE SAME TIME, JACKIE. IT’S THE BEST WAY.😂
Ugh I STILL need to read Daughter of the Pirate King but I kinda wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean 5 first so by reading that book I could kind of stay in a pirate mood 😛 But luckily it’s still in my theater and I’m FINALLY going to see it today so I can finally get DOTPK and read it I’m so excited!
SAME. Why haven’t we read all the books we need to read yet?!😂 I’m super excited about Pirates 5. I have an unreasonable amount of love for all things Caribbean.😂
Too many books and so little time, that is why I am always freaking out!
This is meeeee too.😂
I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on Blood Rose Rebellion! So far, all I’ve seen of it is a plethora of 1 and 2 star reviews. And on Hunted, as well – I didn’t like that one so much, but I know there are plenty who did. 🙂 I NEED to read Star-Crossed by Barbara Dee, omg. A smol middle schooler figuring out her sexuality is just the kind of book I needed when I was that age. I’m just so excited it’s been written now, so that the kids of the present and future can have it!
Ellie | On the Other Side of Reality
I know right? That’s why I’m avoiding it.😂 Almost everyone I know DNF’d it out of sheer boredom. 😂
Ohh Star-Crossed sounds really good!! I hadn’t heard of it till now!
OKAY SO I OFFICIALLY HAVE TO READ V.E. SCHWAB’S STUFF. I read The Raven Cycle at your urging and S T I E F V A T E R is now perfection. But also do I really need to destroy my life with books again? ALSO was I the only one who was underwhelmed by the Wonder Woman movie?? I’m kind of excited for the book, but then again books-based-on-movies tend to underwhelm me and so if I was ALREADY underwhelmed by the movie *descends into panic and chaos screaming you are right Cait bookworms are prone to freakouts*
STIEVATER IS PERFECTION AND I LOVE HER SO MUCH OMG. I’M SO GLAD YOU HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CONVERTED.
I didn’t see Wonder Woman so I don’t know.😱😂My sister says it’s awesome!
You haven’t seen Wonder Woman?! Get thee to a cinema!
I am now very interested in They Both Die at the End, just because of the title.
I run my blog to feed my need to freak out over the fictional, and I also occasionally break into spontaneous ranting. Sometimes I force books on my friends. Three are now reading Six of Crows. Hopefully this number will rise.
I need to buy The Dark Prophecy. Obviously. I am also still very much looking forward to getting my hands on A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.
Have you seen this yet? http://maggie-stiefvater.tumblr.com/post/162768294406/playing-with-a-little-side-project-tonight
I haaate cinemas though. 😭 I’ll wait till it’s out so I can watch it at home. 😂
And omg I know right? I want to know if they die at the end. Tbh I will have trust issues if they don’t BUT I ALSO DON’T WANT PAIN, SO HOW DO WE WIN. And that is amazing that you are converting the world to Six of Crows. That is an excellent life goal.
FJAKDSLFADSJK I DID SEE THAT MAGGIE STIFEVATER POST AND OMGGGGGG. SHE DELIGHTS IN TORTURING US. DO YOU THINK IT’S A SCORPIO RACES SEQUEL???? 😱😱😱😱😱😱
I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT, CAIT. I HAVE NEVER USED ALL CAPS IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.
But also I NEED to read Strange the Dreamer ASAP. The US cover is not nearly as pretty though, seriously.
Also, I’ve been wanting to read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue… does it feature sarcasm and/or sarcastic gentlemen? 😉
YEAH ME NEITHER. WE ARE THE PICTURE OF CALM, BOTH YOU AND I. WE ARE THE WORD CALM PERSONIFIED.
Ah, yes. I often find myself eye-rolling over the numerous delicious descriptions of…a boy’s sweat. After trekking or some other sweat inducing activity that IN NO WORLD EVER made ANYONE smell good. 😛 I have lost all my hopeless-romantic-ness.
OH MY GOSH it always cracks me up when books describe guys as smelling like “an intoxicating mixture of leather and sweat.” Like is that supposed to sound appealing? 😂
I know right?!😂 I have a brother and there is no hecking way hiking with him was ever as sweetly odorous as it is in books.😂 These heroines are a bit worringly delusional.
I still haven’t read Lord of Shadows! If I’m honest, I’m a little scared to…I’ve heard there’s a painful cliffhanger and I am not prepared! Glad to hear that it’s great though 🙂 I recently finished The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and now immediately want to read it again, it was that fantastic! Oooh Wonder Woman is amazing, definitely go see it if you can 🙂
IT IS SUPER SUPER PAINFUL. READ IT AND BE IN SUPER PAIN WITH ME. #bookwormproblems 😂
Afjdkslad Gentleman’s Guide is so perfect. I read it a few months ago but I want to read it again. SOON.
I love this post. Oh my gosh Bookworms are absolutely prone to freaking out. I know this because I have very much freaked out before in public and people have stared at me like I am a crazy person but I probably am so I can’t really blame. I agree with like 100% of your answers. I usually show my freaking out ness by talking very loudly nonstop for a long period of time because as I mentioned earlier I’m crazy. By the way I tagged you for a super cool tag that I seriously think you would be amazing for. You are by far my favorite book blogger and this tag is by far my favorite new book tag. Book characters like fight and there are questions and I kind of need to read your answers. You can find my post about it at http://hottowncoolgirl.blogspot.com/2017/07/a-post-in-which-characters-fight-to.html. Hope you do it!
That is an excellent way to freak out! Talking about books is THE BEST. :’) And ohh thanks for the tag! I shall go check it out immediately. (AND OMG FAVOURITE BLOGGER?! I’M HONOURED, NABILA. THANK YOU. <3)
ACOL was so so good, omg. I’m still trying to get over that book of perfection. AND GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE!!! I NEED IT!!! My friend is lending me that, THUG, and At the Edge of the Universe, for Illuminae… which is a fair trade. XD And duuuuuude I watched Wonder Woman yesterday and I am FREAKING DAMAGED OMG I’M GOING TO CRY IF I SEE ANY MORE GIFS BUT AT THE SAME TIME I’M HAPPY WITH THE ENDING BUT ALSO SAD AND SATISIFED AND AJDLFKAJSD;KFJADS.
Ah, I actually liked When the Moon Was Ours better than The Weight of Feathers! Something about the romance between Lace and Cluck was off??? Though it was super cute. SAM THO. <333 Freaking Lazlo Strange is amazing and I'd be fine if the book was all about him honestly. And omg the sock thing right??? Like I would spend it on books, but socks is second option because omg socks.
And what how is it July already.
AHHHH YAY FOR WONDER WOMAN! I have not seen it but I definitely want to. :’)
Bahah, that’s so interesting how we’re exactly the opposite with the McLemore books, right?! Just goes to show books will always affect readers differently! I can’t even with how much I love Lace and Cluck. <3 AND LAZLO STRANGE THOUGH. HE IS JUST THE BEST OF ALL BOOK BOYS. Good warm soft new socks are what keeps this world happy.
(Also petition for it not to be July yet. I'M NOT READY.)
I am very glad that you clarified about the different kinds of freaking out, because if you hadn’t, I probably would’ve said that I don’t actually freak out. Because I, like you, have a resting murder face. 😂😂😂 But INSIDE I AM SO JOYFUL.
I’m really glad you liked When Dimple Met Rishi, because that’s the new release I’ve been eyeing up. It looks so. cute. 😊😊
There are soo many ways to freak out! Not just the traditional screaming.😂 And HEY hi five for resting-murder-face. It gets so awkward…like we are enjoying ourselves??? Not thinking about destroying humanity?? (I MEAN, WE CAN ALSO MULTITASK.)
Dimple & Rishi is aDORABLE.
I FREAK OUT BY TYPING IN CAPS A LOT. I also smile creepily like the cheshire cat. It tends to be more internal than external for me except on the internet?? On the internet, I frequently take to caps because it just FEELS SO RIGHT.
The most recently published book that I need to read is A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue because halfhe wiufeilafdsafj ldafhd everyone has absolutely loved it and also I’ve been anticipating it forever so WHY DON’T I HAVE IT YET??? I don’t know. I have no good answers for this problem.
ALSO THAT SAWYER GIF, MY HEART
TYPING IN ALL CAPS IS A VERY RELATABLE WAY TO DO ALL THE FREAKING OUT. I AGREE. *hi fives*
And zomggggg the Gentleman’s Guide is basically the best book of my life. 😍 I love it SO much.
The best book of the year/decade/century, in my eyes actually came out a few years ago, but The Bacta War in the Star Wars X-Wing series was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ooh, that sounds exciting! One of these days I’ll actually read/watch something Star Warsish.😂
Can you believe I have not read A Gathering Of Shadows, yet?! And I have it! I was doing so well only having a couple of ARCs a month and then POW *avalanche* Things don’t get better until November, so I am not sure if I will even get it read until next year. Ugh.
The new Reckless covers are nice, but…. I have the first two in hardcover with the old artwork. Did they even publish the third book in the old style? I wish they would sell just the dust jackets for a couple of bucks when they do that!
I want to read The Bear and the Nightingale, and List Of Cages. 🙂
Ahhh, yes the ARC avalanche is HUGE and never ending.😂 I can’t even with how behind I am at the moment.😂
I have no idea about the Reckless covers! I know they’ve been edited again too, so I’m guessing the story might be a bit different?
A LIST OF CAGES IS SO SO SO SO GOOD.
I have an ebook of the edited version of the first book, so when I read it I am going to compare them chapter by chapter. 🙂
I usually scream and then spam everyone I know with why I’m freaking out! The second question, definitely Lord of Shadows but I have to read Lady Midnight first!
OMGGG YOU MUST READ BOTH LORD OF SHADOWS AND LADY MIDNIGHT ASAP. AND THEN SPAM ME WITH FREAKING OUT.😂😂 They’re so good and so feels-destroying.
Lazlo is such a wonderful character! Like, constantly walking around (and into) things with your nose in a book? That’s where I live, honestly. That is me, that is what I do. Also, hording highly specific facts like they’re non-perishable food and the apocalypse is scheduled for tomorrow? Also deeply relatable. (Okay, also, having a face that looks kind of angry, I’m probably that too.)
Also the cover of your copy is SO BEAUTIFUL!! Like, the North American edition is nice, but this one is so lovely! (I am a simple creature that really likes pretty covers, it seems).
I totally just want to live in a book. MY PLACE. MY LIFE.😂 (And like condolences for our resting-murder-faces. 😂) And I do think the UK cover wins for Strange the Dreamer!
We share fave books of the year so far! I LOVED ACOL and TGGVAV so much. Like, I want to re-read them already ‘so much’.
You are going to be disappointed but I have yet to read Strange the Dreamer. I’M SORRY. But there’s so many books to read, and so much hype for it, and DOSAB just didn’t mesh with me the way it did with everyone else. Although I am loving the sound of this Lazlo so I will try my hardest to read the library copy that is coming soon.
I hope you love They Both Die at the End. It is one of my fave books of the year so far. So beautiful, so heartbreaking. ADAM SIVLERA, WHY DO YOU DO THIS TO USSSSS. W H Y
I just picked up Our Dark Duet from the library and I HAVE TO READ IT BEFORE RETURNING IT. I will just have to juggle it with my review copies and the re-read of TSS that I want to have before I read ODD. *upside down smiling emoji*
Hunted is on my TBR for later this year, too. I even bought a copy 😀
SAME SAME. I want to buy a physical copy of TGGTVAV so I can reread it only nine million times. Why must it be so PERFECT. *sobs with happiness*
I think Strange the Dreamer is honestly best on audio.😂 The writing is REALLY lush and gorgeous but I think I would’ve gotten frustrated with a physical copy but like afjdksla I am officially Lazlo Strange trash. <3
Oh my gosh, so many of these books I haven’t read yet! Though I’m happy to have Queens of Geek, When Dimply Met Rishi, and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue on my TBR! But I completely agree about Lazlo! He’s adorable! And I feel we would both be very good friends, and could talk for ages about books and fairy tales. Oh, I just love him!
When I freakout for the right reasons, I grin stupidly, I get all high pitched, and I might even clap or bounce in place. It’s kind of stupid, but that’s me. When I freakout in a bad way, when it comes to books, I tend to start talking to them. “What are you doing?!” for example. Or exclaimations of horror. I might even shout. There was one time when I was so unhappy with what was happening in a book, I threw it across the room (to my bed, where it had a nice, soft, and safe landing) but that has never been repeated, because, oh my god, I actually threw a book, and that is so wrong. I really regret it. I’m a terrible book lover. BUT THIS BOOK HAD ME FUMING FOR WEEKS! I do not like some characters. Especially when those characters think and act like real people, who are despicable excuses for human beings. Well, thinking about it, it might not be all that bad in the great scheme of things – they didn’t start a war or kill anyone or anything – they just did something I personally think is terrible, and I was so emotionally invested and really relating to the main character, so when she was betrayed, I took it personally. I digress. I shouldn’t freakout badly with books, basically.
I don’t like your second question. Because there are SO MANY I really need to read, and I just can’t choose. I have difficultly choosing which books to read or not read next as it is, I can’t talk about it, too. Haha! Just see the three mentioned above that are on my TBR. They’ll do for now. 🙂
I stole the tag, thank you for your permission!
Eeep, I hope you love them all!! Gentleman’s Guide is just SO PRECIOUS. 😍😍 And Lazlo is just such a golden precious cinnamon roll. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.
And I’ve thrown a book too, I admit. Except I bent the cover and now I feel like a monster.😭😂
The TBR pain neeever ends, does it?!? (I can’t wait to read your answers to the tag!)
I am so jealous of everyone that got a copy of “They Both Die At the End” at BEA. I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed that book in my life!!! Now! I`m so happy to see “When Dimple Met Rishi” on your list. It`s just a cute book and I was smiling throughout the whole time I read it.
OMG I’m so jealous too of everyone who’s got it. I HOPE IT’S AS AMAZING AS IT SOUNDS. *flails* Dimple & Rishi is just the cutest though right?!?
I may steal this from you. I am doing a post of tags, and I need one more tag? I am going between this and another tag that I was not in any way tagged for. Oops? Ahem, anyway. So, me, in regards to 2017 in general, is sitting in the corner with my arms folding, being extra grumpy and giving everyone a side eye. This goes doubly for books. I do not approve of this year. Like, sure, there have been some good ones, but nothing that I am wholeheartedly flailing over? SAD. And I didn’t read many of the same ones as you either! Strange the Dreamer would make my list in some way, I’m sure. I am currently reading They Both Die at the End, and so far I like it.
Let’s see. OH I know the answer to your question, and I think it’s one you’ll approve of! I NEEEED to read Gentleman’s Guide. Like, yesterday. But my issue is A) I am broke. And B) the cover is so tragic that I don’t *need* to own it? Maybe I wait for a Kindle sale? I don’t want to do anything crazy like try the library 😉 BUT, if by the time I am done with my review books I’ve not obtained it, I promise I’ll buy the tragic cover, okay? Okay.
Woooo I look forward to reading your post then!! It’s such a fun tag to recap with, right?! (I only don’t tag people because I never know who likes/hates tags.😂) I’m sad your 2017 is being suckish though. *cries and gives you comforting cake* And omg I’m SO jealous of you reading They Both Die At The End.😂 I just want to KNOW IF THEY DO DIE/??????
Ahem.
I’m so sad you don’t have Gentleman’s Guide! I’m sure you’d love it.🎉 I actually like the cover..which is weird because usually I hate covers with faces. 😂
This tag is so much fun, I really need to do it. I totsally agree on your most anticipated books, especially Wonderwoman and Godsgrave.
PS – CAIT I READ STRANGE THE DREAMER AND IT WAS GLORIOUS <3
Megan @ http://www.wanderingsofabookbird.blogspot.co.uk
Ahhh I’m glad you enjoyed reading this, Megan. THANK YOU.💕
AND OMG STRANGE THE DREAMER IS LIFE. 😍😍
I have watched quite a few of this tag on YouTube, so it was nice to see one on a blogging platform 🙂
These are indeed a lovely set of books you have choosen, I have seen that ‘When dimple met Rishi’ all overthe place, but it still does not appeal.
I am afraid that I have past the age of sqeeing, but I do get excited in my own way!
Iam really looking ofrward to the new Phillipa Gregory book ‘The last Tudor’ in August and the Alison Weir book on Jane Seymour that comes out next year.
The waiting…… its intolerable sometimes!
Eeep, it is a fun tag! I didn’t know where it started but it makes a great blogging one too.😂 And everyone is able to squee and flail in their own ways. 😉
Such good books listed here!
http://www.shelliescloset.com
I think so too. 😀
GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO VICE AND VIRTUE <3 <3 So much love for it. And Here Lies Daniel Tate! 😍 That ending AKJEJDNDFR
BOTH THOSE BOOKS ARE JUST SO AMAZING. I CAN’T EVEN. ❤️❤️
well honestly I’m freaking out right now aBOUT THE FACT THAT ITS THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR ALREADY. like whAT. *cue flailing and also jumping up and down*
but like WOW IVE READ SO MANY BOOKS THIS SUMMER AND AM FLAILING ABOUT THEM ALL SO.
I KNOW RIGHT?!? I THINK IT’S A BIT UNFAIR THE YEAR IS NEARLY OVER. IS THIS ALLOWED.
How I freak out depends on why I am freaking out, and where I am when I am freaking out. And maybe who I am with.
Like.. last night this totally wicked random thing happened on bookstagram, and I was in bed, and Steve doesn’t really get it… so i flapped one hand a little bit, and spaz-typed a ridiculous DM to someone who WOULD get it.
If I am all alone and stumble upon something to get excited about. . . I may bounce. I may even squeal. But I will definitely take a photo/screen cap and send it to like everyone I can think of who will freak out with me. With many !!! ;D
When I freak out at work it is usually because I just did something really cool/gross and apparently I laugh like a maniac?? Not long ago did my first pericardiocentesis (stuck a huge needle into the sack around a dog’s heart and sucked fluid out of it) and when it was over, and the dog was still alive, I not only laughed… I danced around like a nut job. Apparently sometimes my staff finds this unnerving? I dunno. I try to never freak out over gross stuff in front of clients at least 😉
(One day I did freak out about a book at work… one of the ICU assistants was reading Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and so obviously we had to freak out at each other about how awesome that book was… this is an excellent way to determine who else in the clinic is cool like us 😉 )
I *really* need to read Lord of Shadows. But I am resisting. I had so much angst when I red TMI before #6 was published, I don’t think I can cope with that again ;D
I absolutely am with you with books that I STILL need to read: Hunted has been staring at me on my bookshelf for more than a few months now. I have made it my mission to read every Beauty and the Beast retelling ever… and yet here it sits.
