Welcome to my MTMC Tours stop for Over The Moon by S.E. Anderson!
An illegal clone of the recently murdered princess of the galaxy. A flying kitchen timer bot. A girl out of time with some defrost issues. A theme park droid with the mind of a prince. And a lost beast who’s not sure who he’s meant to kill. Over the Moon is an exciting F/F YA Science Fiction Fantasy published on January 10th, 2023 from Sea Breeze Books!
This is the Wizard Of Oz retelling you need in your life! ✨🚀 Make it sci-fi and full of sentient tech bots and girls who dream of a life beyond their tiny farming moon, and make it queer and full of twists and homage to the original tale, and you’ve got yourself a solid read. 😌 This also gives all the Lunar Chronicles vibes, so if you’re a fan of that style, you’ll definitely eat this right up.
“I want the life that’s rightfully mine, to see where I can go now that her shadow’s not keeping me in place!”
Dora is an illegal clone and has spent her life basically trying to be a nobody, to be less-than and invisible and not do anything to draw attention to herself. She lives on this tiny moon and farms with her uncle and aunt, and she’s a whiz at fixing things. But she craves a real life. She wants to study at university and not be tied down to marry the neighbour boy simply because he’s the only one her age on the moon. Dora is a tenacious and easy-to-root-for character. She’s also thrown headlong into the adventure she always craved having…and isn’t quite sure she signed up for this.
I only wanted to study freely, and now I’ve toppled an alien tyrant, and while I’m somehow the queen of the droids, it isn’t exactly the paradise I’ve been promised.
I particularly loved the retelling aspects, and the sci-fi versions of them. Super creative and fun to read. Just “technowitch” alone has me 😂👌🏻 It’s a compelling story and easy to get swept up in.
Such a fun, creative retelling with captivating writing and a fresh take on an old classic. Add this to your TBR piles!

I don’t have a faint heart, though; I have guts of steel.
Hi Sarah, thanks for chatting with me about your latest epic book! Can you tell us a little about the origin story of Over The Moon? When did you first get the idea and how long did it take to become a finished novel in our hands? What was the publishing journey like?
The idea took a long time to form into what could even be called a premise. The first thing I had was only an image, that of an entire planet covered with corn, inspired by the movie Interstellar, and a cross-country USA roadtrip that lead me through infinite fields of the stuff. I found myself imagining life for a young teenage girl in that kind of world, and it reminded me of Dorothy in Kansas. It then slowly fell into place in my head, at the same time as the discussion about CRIPR, was in full swing, and the ethics of genetic manipulation.
As a proficient writer of many books, has your writing process changed since you first started?
Oh, completely. I’m a much better fan of editing than I was in the beginning. I used to put so much effort into making my first draft perfect, when we know that’s never going to happen. Now I know to trust the process, to let the plot figure itself out, to let the characters tell me who they are. And I still have a lot to learn.
Those pesky first drafts do demand to be messy, that’s for sure. Tell us two random facts about Dora!
Dora’s passionate about robotics, and is terribly afraid of the dark.
I absolutely love that this is a sci fi reimagining of the Wizard of Oz! Are there any other retellings you’re itching to do?
LOADS. I’ve been meaning to work on a retelling of “The Tempest”, which is one of my favorite Shakespeares ever, and I feel like it would be really fun to bring that into the 30th century.
Oh for sure!! Already looking forward to your version. 😌 When do you usually write and what is your writing space like?
I write whenever I can find the time. Usually it’s either early early in the morning (6am) or at night before bed (8 or 9 pm) since the day job gets in the way. My writing space is also whatever I get my hands on: while I have a desk, I’m more likely to be writing in bed or on the couch. Sue me, I like the creature comforts.
I’m the same actually. I always write in bed. 😂 Can we beg for a hint about what you’re working on next? 👀👀👀
I cannot wait to write the ending of the Starstruck Saga! That’s the big goal on my mind right now. After that, I have two big projects: my “reverse X-files” novel, which I’ve been rewriting for almost a decade now, and something fun and zany which I can only tell you involves Space Pirates and social media influencers. That one’s a big secret right now.
Ooooh that’s exciting!! One last question! What have been some of your favourite author moments so far?
Is it cheesy to say “the friends I made along the way”? Cuz honestly, they’re the best part. The people I’ve met in writing circles, and the fans-turned-friends who all make my life so special.
Wishing you the very happiest release for Over The Moon!! And thank you for the chance to chat about your amazing book. ✨💛

Ding Dong, the Technowitch is dead.
As an illegal clone of the murdered galactic princess, Dora’s face would get her killed the minute she steps off her dull farming moon. She spends her days tinkering with gadgets and gears, with Tau, her kitchen-timer-bot, for company. But when forces close in and threaten her family, her escape attempt lands her deep in the Outer Zone — and on top of the Technowitch of Night, crushing her in the process.
Now a fugitive in two solar systems, Dora’s only chance of survival is to find her way to the mysterious Technomage on his Emerald moon. In a place where science has advanced to be indistinguishable from magic, she must accept the help of an unlikely trio: a cryogenically-preserved girl with no memory, an obsolete theme park droid, and a bioengineered beast with a penchant for the dramatic.
As Dora realizes there’s more to the princess’s death than what the universe has been told, she must choose — save her family, or risk everything to right a centuries-old wrong.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
S.E. Anderson can’t ever tell you where she’s from. Not because she doesn’t want to, but because it inevitably leads to a confusing conversation where she goes over where she was born (England) where she grew up (France) and where her family is from (USA) and it tends to make things very complicated. She’s lived pretty much her entire life in the South of France, except for a brief stint where she moved to Washington DC, or the eighty years she spent as a queen of Narnia before coming back home five minutes after she had left. Currently, she is working on her PhD in Astrophysics and Planetary sciences in Besançon, France. When she’s not writing, or trying to science, she’s either reading, designing, crafting, or attempting to speak with various woodland creatures in an attempt to get them to do household chores for her. She could also be gaming, or pretending she’s not watching anything on Netflix. Twitter | Goodreads | Instagram
