For some, knowing the truth is worse than living a lie.
Everly Martin, eighteen years old and fiercely ambitious, takes pity on Nicolai after accidentally swiping right on a dating app. She doesn’t have time for love, not with her desperation to finish college and earn enough money to help her single mom pay the bills. But from the moment they meet at a coffee shop, Nicolai terrifies her with the instant connection they form. He couldn’t have come at a worse time, because that same morning, Everly learns she’s pregnant. And to make matters worse, she isn’t sure who the father of her child is.
Though Everly is determined to stay far away from Nicolai, he reappears in her life, this time in a way she can’t ignore. While fighting her growing attraction for him, Everly is haunted by the knowledge that her baby’s father might actually be a terrible person. She’s willing to find out, even if learning the truth ultimately ends in heartbreak. Nicolai might not have a place in Everly’s future, but when he helps her discover a shocking truth about her past—a truth that could either change everything for the better, or destroy it even more—Everly must decide what’s more important: giving her child the life she’s always wanted, or following her heart and choosing love.
Note: this is an adult book and has graphic and traumatic themes. Content warnings on the author’s website here.
Hi Whitney! Thanks so much for chatting with me today about Something Bright And Burning! Tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your book and how long it took to go from first seed of an idea to finished novel on our shelves.
Hi! Thank you so much for having me! I was inspired to write Something Bright and Burning for a few different reasons, actually. The first inspiration for this story was definitely all the strong, resilient women I know. They were the fuel for Everly’s character. I knew I wanted my main character to be as strong and badass as the women I knew and look up to in real life.
Did anything change about your writing process between One Carefree Day and Something Bright and Burning?
Oh, definitely! One Carefree Day was more of an Own Voices novel than Something Bright and Burning. One Carefree Day was both easy and hard to write. Easy because it felt very much inspired from my own experiences battling OCD, and hard because it was scary to let people into that part of my life.
Something Bright and Burning feels more like an homage to a lot of strong women I know. It took a lot of concentration to get into Everly’s head. I had to spend time getting to know her as a character. Once I did, she felt like a lifelong friend. We share some similarities, like a younger sister we feel responsible for, and a love for journal writing, but she is still so unique and different, and writing from her perspective felt completely different from writing as Willow from One Carefree Day.
Favourite thing about writing contemporary novels?
Probably the ability to bring to life extraordinary circumstances in a real-life setting. I think contemporary novels are so incredibly relatable, and I love that about them, as well as the opportunity to read a contemporary novel and find your own life mirrored in it.
Can we have a teaser about what you’re working on next?
I’m currently working on my next YA novel and I’m SO EXCITED for the day I can announce everything about it. It’s definitely been the most fun novel I’ve written so far. I can’t share too much just yet, but what I can tell you is that it involves theater, black high school elite, and plenty of unnecessary drama.
And lastly! What are some of the best author moments you’ve had so far?
It’s been surreal and amazing to connect with other authors, some I’ve been a fan of long before I started writing! But the best part has definitely been connecting with readers! It’s the most magical feeling to meet or talk to someone who has read my work and enjoyed it.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Whitney Amazeen’s love for reading started in third grade and has been going strong ever since. As a result, Whitney has evolved into a full-fledged daydreamer with more stories in her head than she can count. When she’s not immersed in a novel, Whitney spends the majority of her time writing down stories about characters in her head who demand to be heard. Whitney lives in California with her husband and son, and can often be found drinking tea, hoping for foggy weather, and obsessing over fictional characters. Website | Twitter | Instagram | Goodreads
