This was such a brilliantly addictive book!
Okay confession: I partially fell in love with it because…I mean isn’t this everyone’s dream? Your normal life is interrupted by a random billionaire dying and leaving you his entire fortune? 😂 Pick me pick me. Think of all the hardcover books you could buy… smh that Avery did not go for that immediately.
It was also just SO compelling, so many puzzles and boxes to unpack and twists in the narrative, as well as characters you can’t help but love. You can’t trust anyone and all the motives are so unclear. After about pg 200 I just quit on doing anything else for the evening and did not put it down.
Avery Grambs was living in her car one day, and heiress to a billionare legacy the next.
The rags to riches story is made entirely more captivating by the fact: she has no idea why she was chosen. She’s not related. She doesn’t even think she ever met philanthropist, Tobias Hawthorne. Make it make senseeeee, Avery thinks, but also she is not knocking this insane opportunity.
But she is this outsider that’s just snatched away this fortune from the real Hawthorne family, including his four grandsons who are basically disinherited in a snap. There are mothers, aunts, and cousins all coldly furious over this and wondering if they can contest the will and looking for loopholes. Like…who inherits if Avery mysteriously….dies?
It’s quite character driven too!
The plot is knotted complexed weave of clues to follow and riddles to solve, but it’s very focused on the brilliant cast of characters. Avery is a fantastic narrator: no nonsense attitude, very pragmatic, and also addicted to logic and strategy. She’s also kind and not bedazzled by privledge since she comes from a hard background, and was nearly homeless. But as the stakes get higher and there’s a murder attempt — she isn’t sure if she’s cut out for this. (She also has the sweetest relationship with her older half sister and I loved them!!)
Then we have the four Hawthorn boys: Nash, Grayson, Jameson, and Xander. Um, I kind of loved them all 👀💛 Brother stories with messy complicated dynamics are my absolute favourite. The brothers brought such complicated dynamics to the page and NO ONE was straightforward or reliable.
- Nash: he’s the oldest and not as involved in the mystery. A cowboy, one who travels and kind of rescues poor lost souls.
- Grayson: he’s 19 and reminded me of Gansey, but like…if Gansey had a super cold streak. He’s the one who’s lost EVERYTHING by Avery appearing and inheriting all. He’s trained to rule this empire and now it’s just …gone.
- Jameson: he is our soft manic pixie dream boy and I loved him 😭no regrets. He’s the tortured genius, the one with no self regard and is whimsical as well as self destructive. He also lives for puzzles and solving things and winning.
- Xander: the soft baby brother!! Except he’s super tall and also a genius?! He is all about scones and building robots…and keeping many mysteries in his own pockets.
Also it wasn’t quite a love triangle, but the VIBES. I freaking love it.
The only things I have reservations about were: I expected a bigger, flashier finale, and felt it wasn’t as climactic as I hoped. I wanted a bit more emotion from the brothers too…and omg this is petty but AVERY’S BODY GUARD NEVER SLEPT. I worried for him 😭😂 Can someone pls relieve this man so he may rest.
The book is as compelling as it is excellently written, a twisty delight that will leave your mind racing.
It’s this whirlwind of being crashed into a world of grossly gorgeous riches and power, where you could literally change the world if you chose. But why is Avery there and what on earth is she doing? And who wants to kill her for this “mistake”? It also does talk a bit about the gross wealth, how the rich thrive while others suffer, and responsibility to change (basically rule!) the world.
Also. I am so relieved there’s a sequel because I want more from these characters.
Thanks Penguin Australia for the review copy! The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is out Sept, 2020.
An utterly addictive and twisty thriller, full of dark family secrets and deadly stakes. Perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.
She came from nothing. Avery has a plan: keep her head down, work hard for a better future. Then an eccentric billionaire dies, leaving her almost his entire fortune. And no one, least of all Avery, knows why.
They had everything. Now she must move into the mansion she’s inherited. It’s filled with secrets and codes, and the old man’s surviving relatives – a family hell-bent on discovering why Avery got ‘their’ money.
Now there’s only one rule: winner takes all.Soon she is caught in a deadly game that everyone in this strange family is playing. But just how far will they go to keep their fortune?

Great review Cait! So glad to know you like this book!
I really adored reading this book! This was a great and addicting read and after that ending, I need the sequel now
Ahhh I’m so happy to see you enjoyed this book Cait!! I’ve been hearing the most amazing things about it so it’s already on my TBR. And ahahaha I so relate about immediately buying a billion hardcovers if anyone mysteriously left their entire fortune to me… 😂 Amazing review Cait!!! 💖
Wow! Since I read The Raven Boys on your rec and am now obsessed, I have to get this one too! THANK YOU for making me life more full of atmospheric character-driven goodness.
Definitely agree with you about this one! It is such a fun thing to think about, and then also get angry about, like hey where is my random rich old dead guy, right!? 😂 But yeah definitely entertaining and enjoyable, I liked the dynamics between all the Hawthornes too, and I didn’t even really blame them for trying to get their money back hahah. I’ll definitely be reading the sequel, too!
Ooh, this one is definitely on my tbr!
I LOVED this book! Yeah, I guess you’re right – more of an infatuation triangle than a love triangle, but I wonder where it’s gonna go from there? The book was rather short, so I can’t believe how much tension and intrigue was crammed into it. I’m happy to see you liked it too, cause I loved it, but I don’t trust my own opinion much when it comes to YA xD I don’t read a lot of it, so I wondered if it’s just me and naybeore frequent YA readers would have seen something like this already. But I’m glad to hear that it wasn’t just me 🙂 anyway, I can’t wait for the sequel.
This book is on my TBR, so I’m glad to hear it got a good review from you. Looking forward to picking it up myself.
Oooh great review, Cait, I am so intrigued about this one now! The main character sounds so great and has a great relationship with her half sister? I’m all for siblings relationships yay!! <3
