It’s pretty much official that breakfast food is better than most other food.
I mean, cereal. Waffles. PANCAKES. Although if pressed, I do admit I am: waffle > pancakes. Waffles have those nice organised squares see and when you put toppings in those squares they stay, while pancakes are over there like “whAT IF EVERYTHING SLID OFF YOUR PANCAKE WHEN U PUT IT TO YOUR MOUTH!!” Little demons. They are still delicious though.
In Australia we do mini-pancakes and call them “pikelets”. Because we’re special and we make no sense.
Anyhow, this is all to say I’m doing the…
…which I lovingly stole from Marie @ Drizzle and Hurricane Books (I think I steal a lot of foodie tags from you!? But you’re wonderful. Thank you. π) And the tag was originally created by Becky @ Blogs of a Bookaholic!
I actually started off today planning to write this very sensible post for mental health may butΒ my mental health took off on a train, leaving a postcard that said, “SEE YA SUCKA” which is, quite frankly, rude. So instead you get a pancake tag and I get a quiet existential crisis — which hopefully will be cured by pancakes.
It’s like nearly 10:00pm and yet I need a pancake.
π₯β¨π

pancakes with a sprinkling of sugar
(book with beautiful prose / descriptions)
I adore beautiful prose…like if you even breathe the phrase “purple prose” I will be THERE, with a bucket of blueberries and a fold out chair to set up and stake my claim on that book forever. ππ» It is mine now and we shall be married at dawn. And (since it’s hugely on my mine because it is my most reason obsession) I’m going to say the Caraval series. It’s so perfectly stunning with the lush and wickedly delicious prose that I just !!!! want to fall into this writing.

pancakes with lemon drizzle
(character with sharp wit or temperament)
*screams in Locke Lamora*
He is like a Slytherin inside a Hufflepuff badger fluffy softest coat. He will, literally, mock himself out of danger. And he’s so sassy that his friends often consider stuffing him in a barrel and selling him for a jar of pickles — bUT they don’t because his also wickedly sharp and could steal the world. If only you dared him to.π10/10 to this series I am obsessed.
pancakes with chocolate nutella
(a comforting read you could devour again and again)
This is absolutely hands down THE RAVEN CYCLE. It’s definitely my most reread series and somehow manages to stress me the heck out —Β and be comforting? Like “oh will the kids softly give each other the family they deserve…or will they raise a demon and nearly die in the woods! we don’t know! What has Gansey got scheduled!”
I love them. Would die for Blue and all four of the raven boys she accidentally collected.
pancakes with golden syrup
(novel that gave you a serious book hangover — sugar crash alert!)
I want to say Finale by Stephanie Garber because — guess what’s on my MIIIIIIND. π€ But hey we’ll go for something new. I definitely flopped in a wailing pile after The Wicker King. I mean you know I love this one. It’s right up there with The Raven Cycle. I just !!!! my anxious disaster neglected kids + prose that stole my breath away. I want to write this well when I grow up.
pancakes, strawberries, and cream
(a book that gave you all the indulgent feels)
Aww I shall definitely shout out to Red White & Royal Blue here! I so so rarely pick up romances, especially adult/new adult ones, because there aren’t nearly enough knives. I do like stories with knives. But this one was hyped and queer and #ownvoices and, you know what?? HYSTERICALLY FUNNY. Also it had so many pockets of deep and heartachy feels. Henry, you depressed princely lump. And Alex, you hotheaded explosion.
pancakes with blueberries
(a character that seems sharp at first, but actually has hidden depths)
My first and immediate thought was just ISABELLE LIGHTWOOD π whom I love with just my whole heart. I mean she is terrifyingly good at weapons, frighteningly gorgeous, and didn’t murder any of the boys in her life during TMI which (let’s be real) is an actual miracle because they were all useless loafs.
pancakes and banana toffee
(a book with a slippery plot that kept you guessing)
Ok I truly had no idea who was going to be the killer in White Rabbit. This book is good. I do remember thinking it would be super fun to read this to relax (lol @ me) and ended up stressed and turning pages aggressively while I hoped my damaged little queer detectives didn’t accidentally step into a TRAP AND DIE.
pancakes and crispy bacon
(a romantic pairing you weren’t sure you’d like at first, but ended up being the perfect match)
Ok, I won’t lie: I didn’t ship Cardan and Jude at all when I first read The Cruel Prince. Β―\_(γ)_/Β― They’re both absolute messes, but Cardan didn’t seem to have enough nuance behind his tragicness to make me really ship them? THEN CAME THE WICKED KING. Hahha…oh yes. They’re still terrible for each other. But they’re terrible enough to each other mutually that it works. I stan.
pancakes and peanut butter
(a character that makes you recoil)
I actually am glad this question equates peanut butter with recoiling because I’m tragically allergic.π« Not like anaphylactic, I just get like hives/rashes. And it SUCKS because peanut butter is good. I wish to file a complaint to the universe.
Anyway there are so many characters I hate so I’m literally making today’s pick because I just finished reading…β¨The Poet X.β¨ IΒ loved the book a lot. Xiamora broke my heart and her mother made me FURIOUS. She was outright abusive, under the guise of being good and holy, and she misused what religion truly even is. I shake my fist. I’m still so angry at her.
pancakes with a bit of everything!
(a book with wonderfully diverse characters)
Ok I can’t even pick one so I’m just going to leave you with a list of delightful recs (these are books I’ve read THIS year) and only quietly demand you read them all, asap, while your TBRs yell at me because didn’t you have enough to read?? Then you made the bad decision to read my blog — and now look at you.
I love them. π
π₯β¨π
So what do you think?
pancakes vs waffles? what’s your favourite way to eat pancakes? and tell me some diverse books you’ve loved and discovered THIS year!
They seriously make tags for everything. This one seems pretty fun though! xD I personally am a pancake person. Also pikelets sound like something I need?
theonesthatreallymatter.blogspot.com
Pancakes are so good *licks lips*
Ugh I think I need to read the Poet X! It sounds really good honestly?
Overall this tag was awesome!!!! <3
Okay, in all honesty, the way that you talked about the Gangsey and “what does Gansey” have scheduled actually made me laugh. I don’t know that I’ve read anything truer. I just recently read The Raven Cycle for this first time this year, and I can already see why it would be so comforting. I honestly wanted to do a reread that exact second that I finished The Raven King.
And, it’s been on my TBR since I’ve seen so many people talk about it, but you’ve made me want to read Red, White, & Royal Blue EVEN MORE.
This was such a wonderful post, and I loved reading all of your answers! Also, your writing is kind of fantastic and I loved every second I spent reading it.
What a fun tag! Iβm a hardcore pancake fan because growing up, my dad made the best chocolate chip pancakes. So yummy! As for diverse books, Iβve recently read and enjoyed Kids Like Us and Fawkes.
YES IZZY MY FAVE. I love her.
I don’t like pancakes at all, or understand the appeal of them, so I’m waffles all the way. I finally read A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue this year.
Firstly, pikelets are the greatest invention ever. I feel like you forgot to mention their best attribute β you eat them cold. Smothered in butter and jam. From your lunchbox. (Like, have we no bread or scones here? Well, yes, but we put vegemite and cream on them. So we needed something else for our jam and butter.)
Secondly, that is SO rude of your mental health. I hope you found *waffles* at 10pm. Itβs 12:30am here (midnight-ish) and alas, no breakfast items. I just looked. I thought we might have had waffles in the fridge that go int he toaster, but husband just informed me he ate them the other day. Also rude.
Thirdly, have now added The Lies of Locke Lamora to my βto buyβ list. Even though I packed my books today and I have over SIXTEEN BOXES. Of books. Already in my possession. Halp?
Fourthβ¦ly? (Why is my comment so long?) βWhat has Gansey got scheduled!β HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. As if Ganseyβs plans actually happen as planned. So much lol-ing is happening here.
5. Book Depository is still sold out on Red, White and Royal Blue and I am SADDENED. Didnβt they see it splashed all over social media? They should have had more stock because I need a copy. (Or maybe I donβt? 16 boxesβ¦ plus the ones I kept out βin case I read them in the next three weeksββ¦
6. Yas to Jardan.
(Speaking of mash-up names, are we going with Saxie or Moxam? Because both are hilarious.)
I just re-read that and didn’t mean for it to sound like we are some kind of heathens who put vegemite AND cream on anything together. Or vegemite on scones or cream on bread. It specifically goes (not for Cait, I assume Cait knows how Aus food goes, this is for anyone else who might stumble on my rambling comments) bread with vegemite, and separately, scones with cream (and jam if you want, or just jam, or butter β eat your scones how you like). I think scones are “biscuits” in the US. Aussie/British biscuits are cookies. This is no longer relevant and I need to go to bed. Sorry!
I had pancakes today so I am calling it fate– I hope that’s okay!! I have to said I prefer pancakes over waffles— granted it has been a while since I’ve had waffles but I love the taste of pancakes so much!! *screams into pancakes* my go to topping is chocolate and raspberries.
And I recently just finished the lies of locke lamora— and Locke is amazing!! I am obsessed with his mind and how he schemes and is able to insult everyone with a flair. He is amazing.
Ahh.. the raven boys. I love them so much too– I had a dream about them once but it was like I was watching them on TV. And like with most dreams it took a weird turn but it was the raven cycle so it felt kind of normal in a way π
I really want to read red, white and royal blue. I have seen so many good things about it and I just really want to read it!!!
Great post!!! π
I will forever be team pancake, so this tag is perfect for me. Though my pancakes are just plain syrup and butter… very original!!
Agh but can we talk about Finale?? It was sooo good. Legendary will always be my favorite bc of Dante but Finale definitely lived up to the hype which made me so happy. this post is also reminding me of my dire tbr situation and how I need to read Cruel Prince + The Raven Cycle!
YES TO HEARTSTOPPER aahh i fell in l o v e with my two soft boys nick and charlie and then tori is just such a mood. i read the webcomic version before discovering my library had the print version… #gome π this tag was fabulous and YES TO THE RAVEN CYCLE βwhat has gansey got scheduledβ oh my god YASSSS!!! i read the last one on a long car trip and there were so many feels. TOO MNAY FEELS.
and yes, pikelets are amazing. and i am team W A F F L E as well
I know Nina Zenik would be mad about this but … I think pancakes are better than waffles π they’re just so much fluffier! Also so cool that you recommended On the Come Up because I feel like it doesn’t get as much hype as THUG (I mean it is hyped but not AS hyped) and OTCU deserves it!
Ooh, that pie looks good
I hate it when mental health takes a vacation without asking, it’s so inconsiderate. My mental health has kind of been suffering this year too, I’ve been feeling really depressed and anxious. I hope you (we) feel better soon.
You know, I’ve only read one of these books! (Of course the one I’ve read I didn’t like as much, so hard to please, lol) I have some books I need to add to my tbr! Especially Raven King, I’ve just got a copy of Blue Lily, Lily Blue from my library and I can’t wait to read it! I’ve had it in my plans to finish that series for a while, I just am terrible at finishing series. I can finish a book in about a day, but series? They will end me.
I think I’m definitely tempted to steal the tag from you now! π
And I agree with you about The Cruel Prince ship. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of it but at the end of The Wicked King I thought of Jude and Cardan as an OTP.
YESSS I’m so happy to see Locke Lamora on this list! Locke is such an awesome character. I really need to pick up the rest of the Caraval series! Definitely picking up Red, White and Royal Blue soon.
Pancakes and books!!!! Two of my favorite things. I put chocolate chips in mine, toast them in the mornings, then chow on the go. I keep seeing The Brilliant Death and then proceed to not pick it up. I suppose I will get there eventually.
Ahhhhh well feel free to steal all of the foodie tags from me, these are always SO much fun to do and read and… well they’re the ones making us so very hungry just as well and we’re not really mad about it… or are we? haha.
I loved your answers for this! i really really reaaaaaaaaaaaaaally need to read the wicker king because all of your screaming about it makes me way too curious.and red, white and royal blue!!! I can’t WAIT to read this one, it sounds so so so good and I’m all for hilarious books, we need these. π
Pancakes! I will agree that waffles are easier to eat, but I think pancakes just taste better, I like mine with Nutella and banana. I should definitely have done better with diverse books this year, but hey, we’re only halfway through so hopefully I’ll have more diverse reads in the latter half of this year. I loved King of Fools which has lots of LGBTQ+ rep. Descendant of The Crane definitely had a lot of great POC rep but I didn’t really enjoy that one much?
I have to admit that I’m actually a pancake gal myself. Waffles are good and fine for storing syrup, but when it comes time to eat them, everything falls apart!
I feel the exact same way about purple prose! I recently realized this about myself. I don’t care what happens in a story as long as the words are super pretty! Who needs a plot? Give me whimsical writing instead! Also, Red, White, & Royal Blue is the perfect example of fluffy cuteness! It’s not mindless, but it *is* adorable and fun!
I am definitely stealing this tag! It looks like so much fun. I prefer waffles because I like things to stay within all the squares. Typically I top my pancakes and waffles with applesauce, which is weird, I know. It’s not even a regional thing. It’s just something my sister started when I was younger, and I kept on doing.
Well now I’m hungry, and I want to reread all of those amazing books.
I would respond with a few of my answers, but I think you already covered all of them. XD
Sees Locke Lamora is mentioned
*scream even higher*
I love this series!!!!
Pancakes with chocolate and banana are LIFEEEE!!!! I’m really picky when it comes to waffles but it’s food, you have to be careful!!! Diverse books: City of Brass – I read it earlier this year and I was blown away by the magic and the world.
God, reading that I wish I’d be American/English or in your case Australian. Something like that isn’t considered breakfast in my country (Germany). Actually, it’s rather considered a special treat like cake, that you only eat maybe once a month. In Germany breakfast is usually some kind of bread with meat or cheese or maybe marmelade – or cereals, but not the unhealthy stuff like rice puffs and so on, but oatmeal with seeds and dried fruits, maybe with some yoghurt. So anything thats nutritional and healthy, but still gives you energy.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my toast with mortadella and stuff like that. But …every now and then I envy the english speaking world with their not giving a damn about healthy attitude.
As for the other question – the only diverse book I discovered this year was by a German selfpublisher. Unfortunately. But it had a protagonist of colour AND steampunk prothesis for disabilities. As a disabled myself this was GREAT. (Especially since it was the first book I ever read to actually feature any kind of prothesis that not make you a superhuman cyborg – or tells people nonsense about glass eyes. (Honestly, I have never seen a correct representation of people with glass eyes or having lost one eye. Annoying!)
Still, nothing I can’t recommend you – unless you wanna learn German as a foreign language? π
Greetings
Taaya
OHHH MY GOD I AM HELLA FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I ONLY JUST REALISED THAT YOU DID MY ORIGIONAL PANCAKE TAG.
I love your blog so much, it’s absolutely incredible and I can’t believe my little tag made it all the way over here!!!! You are such a blogging inspiration. π
Also I am totally with you with waffles over pancakes… the more I think about it, the more I realise I need to do a follow up waffle tag! π
