Welcome to my stop on the MTMC tour for The Veiled Threat!
There comes a time when you just need a book about pirates with hate-to-love romance, court intrigue, heists…and oh yes, make it queer.Β π I enjoyed this one! Pirates are a total weakness of mine (it was my actual top career choice as a child and tbh I was in it for the hat) and I loved how The Veiled Threat combined court politics and pirating with a good dose of magic. It weaves in a totally heart-tugging found-family element and I am so soft for that. π₯Ί Not to mention we get Shea Lara and Princess Joana’s frictious star-crossed romance.
The storyline is equal parts sea adventuring and on-land shenanigans.
It starts off with Shea Tara taking one last job, that miiight be too ambitious for her: kidnap a princess and receive a reward that can take down Shea’s archenemy. Shea takes the job…and accidentally falls in love with the princess she snatched. As a freed-slave, it goes against Shea’s morals to use people as currency, so she has to fight against herself AND her blossoming love for Jo as they head out to sea. Oh and it also has: going to balls in disguise, blowing ships up at sea, bit o’ espionage, and plenty of steamy scenes too. (The characters are in there early 20s, so it’s a bit of an NA feel.)
The characters were my favourite part!
The found-family feel was STRONG, with most people on Shea Lara’s ship being misfits and outcasts. Shea is also an elf, which is a race mostly reviled in her world, and she rescued and freed 14-year-old elven Aster from slavery too, sot hey have this incredibly big sister/little brother bond. She’s always barking at him to stay safe. π₯Ί Shea acted like this tough, heartless, sword-wielding pirate…but then she was just over there secretly being soft to Jo and coddling Aster and joking with her crew. Touch her crew and she will DECIMATE YOU. Jo’s gentle sweetness and utter loyalty to her queendom was so nice too!! Also QUEENDOMS. Multiple!!
I flew through this! It was fun, and also tackled some darker topics and gritty scenes, while giving us a passionate romance and swashbuckling adventures.
THANK YOU TO MTMC TOURS FOR HAVING ME!
