Hi Sarah! Thanks for chatting with me today about your novel, To Bleed A Crystal Bloom! Can you tell us a little about how your book went from seed of an idea to a finished novel?
My pleasure! And absolutely! The prologue of TBACB came to me in a dream over a year ago. I woke up, and I just knew I needed to build a story from it. A week later, I had the majority of the series worked out from start to finish. It all just fell into place so beautifully. That was the easy part.
Getting the first book down was hard. I like to plant plenty of Easter eggs that pull off the page upon a second read or the completion of the series, so I was constantly going back over and over things to make sure I was getting it right. I had to be very well organised getting the first book down, making sure I wasn’t missing anything. After barely leaving the house for ten months while I obsessed over all the finer details, I’m so proud of the final story, but I’ve barely scratched the surface. I can’t wait to reveal more of this world to my readers.
That’s so incredible it came from a dream! What’s your favourite thing about writing fantasy series?
That there are no boundaries. I can mould a new world for people to get lost in. There’s such magic in that.
Oh definitely agree about the magic in that. Anything is possible 😍✨ Favourite part to write: beginning, middle or finale of a story?
The middle-end. I’m all about the angsty build-up and the big, emotional reveals.
Love those emotional endings 😩👌🏻 They’re always one of the best parts to read as well. Can you introduce us to Orlaith and your world in To Bleed A Crystal Bloom?
This is very much an origin story, and Orlaith is cloistered. Unique. A little broken.
She will frustrate you, surprise you, sometimes make you laugh. She’s sassy and quick witted, and she has huge emotions to deal with—mainly because her isolation has kept her naive and she has a lot of time to think.
If you love watching a character develop from the ground up, you will love following Orlaith throughout this series.
As a huge fan of retellings, I was super excited to read your dark Rapunzel reimagining! Are there any other fairy tales or legends you’d like to retell someday?
I do have a huge cache of half-written stories in my vault, and a couple of them are loosely based on fairytales! So yes, there are! I’m also a lover of fairytale retellings. I just love seeing how authors derive their own story from those magical seeds we grew up with.
So glad to hear it and can’t wait to see what you write next after this series 😍 And lastly! Was any chocolate harmed in the making of this novel? 😉
It pains me to say this, but pregnancy destroyed my taste for chocolate. I’m not sure what I did to deserve such a cruel and merciless punishment, but here we are.
Instead, I lived on a disgusting amount of dim sims and gallons of peppermint tea. And everyone who works at the local coffee shop now knows my order by heart.
RIP chocolate 😩 But tea is good. Tea is the backbone of many books I’m sure 😂🙌🏻 Thanks so much for this fun interview, Sarah, and congrats on your book being out in the world!
