Fictional characters and I have an intriguing relationship. And by “intriguing” I usually mean “squinting dubiously and judging their life choices”. Don’t get me wrong: I LOVE characters. I think they’re the best part of the story. They’re the CAKE OF LIFE. (You knew I was going to reference cake somewhere in this post, didn’t you? Yes. Yes you did.) A book cannot truly be good, in my opinion, without good characters. But I do often struggle to relate to characters. (I am a Vulcan.) So I’m often have thoroughly opposite opinions on who I LIKE* and who I DESPISE**.
Lucky for you, today is all about sharing these cantankerously opposing opinions.
I’m linking up with Top Ten Tuesday for their prompt “Characters Everyone Loves But I Don’t/I LOVE But Others Dislike“. And I’m doing 5 of each. And it was ridiculously easy to find ones I-hate-but-everyone-else-loves…APPARENTLY I AM A DISAGREEABLE GUAVA.
* And let’s face it: I always love the anti-heroes. Always. It’s probably a problem, but not one I’m sad about.
** And I’m also very unforgiving. So if a character does something that disgusts me to the very bones of my dragonish soul…I will burn them with fire basically. It’s all very DRAMATIC around here. Sheesh.
CHARACTERS I DESPISE (BUT EVERYONE ELSE LOVES?)
- RON & SNAPE: Oh calm down. LET ME EXPLAIN. I dislike bullies, okay? I truly do. I believe there is NEVER a reason to torment other people…even if you are hurting. Aka, Snape can go facedive into a cuttlefish for all I care. HE IS NOT REDEEMED. And Ron was also a bully, but worse, he was an immature, selfish, clueless bully for no reason. He didn’t even notice half the time, and that’s what made me furious. Also I DO NOT SHIP HIM AND HERMIONE AT ALL. Because let’s just get all my shocking Harry Potter confessions* out right now, eh? I dislike immensely people who hurt others in the name of “liking them”. No. No no no.
* My biggest Harry Potter confession is that I only started reading it last year and only just read the last book in January this year. SORRY. I did I like the series! But I have, um, many quibbles to pick. Like why didn’t Harry marry Luna Lovegood? #ishipit
- MAL: Mal was a moody mammoth. That’s all I can say. NO WAIT. I CAN SAY MORE. Mal irritated me because he couldn’t be bothered to tell Alina he had feelings for her until there was competition. And he sort of acted like he “owned her”…because they were childhood friends? NO. SIT DOWN, MAL. #TeamNikolai
- CELAENA SARDOTHIEN: You know what? I used to love Celaena. She was sassy, fierce, loved books and cake and puppies and pretty clothes, and could probably murder you with a toothpick. I WAS A VERY EMPHATIC FAN. But I am not anymore. Why? LEMME LIST THEM FOR YOU: a) she used to care about her friends but, pfft, not anymore because she can get new/better/stronger friends later and b) because promising to love someone apparently doesn’t mean anything to her, and c) she gives up on her “friends” in a heartbeat. FRIENDSHIP IS SACRED, OKAY? AND CELANEA SPITS ON IT IN QUEEN OF SHADOWS AND I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HER. (Someone is emotionally damaged goods here, eh? Me. ME.)
- JEBEDIAH HOLT: Remember all the stuff I said about Mal above? It’s the same for Jeb. My biggest pet peeve is that he wouldn’t let Alyssa do anything. Protecting her? More like CONTROLLING HER, HMMMPH. If Alyssa wanted to get down a cliff, Morpheus would push her off and say “I believe you can fly” and Jeb would say “lemme carry you down because you can’t do it”. #TeamMorpheus
- ECHO: I’m not sure if “everybody” loves Echo from The Girl At Midnight. MAYBE??? From a cursory glance over Goodreads reviews, I saw most people loving her snappy one-liners and spunky attitude. As for me? Haaaaaa. NOPE. I honestly felt like Echo thought she was better than everyone and her sarcasm sneaked onto the “rude” category. I like polite sarcasm. IS POLITE SARCASM A THING? LET’S MAKE IT A THING.
CHARACTERS I ADORE (BUT EVERYONE ELSE DOESN’T?)
- SANSA STARK: I am constantly annoyed that Sansa* is the “ugh” Stark child. NO. NO SHE’S NOT. I feel like she gets dismissed so easily because a) she likes pretty things, b) she wants a handsome prince, and c) she doesn’t like to be dirty/rough/physical. In other words: SANSA LIKES TO BE FEMININE. Yay for her! I, admittedly, am nothing like Sansa — but I haaaaaate how the girls in literature who like pretty things are so often just called shallow and dismissed. NOT COOL, FOLKS. (Plus, I would be quite happy with Sansa on the Iron Throne, FYI. She has matured so much over being tortured for five books. Fun times. #not)
- KATNISS EVERDEEN: Okay, obviously a ton of people love Katniss. But honestly? Whenever I hear her mentioned on the blogosphere it’s when she’s being called “as emotional as plastic plate”. DID WE FORGET THE PART WHERE SHE WAS SCREAMING FOR THEM TO LET HER SEE PEETA? Katniss has tons of emotion. Also I connect to her like 100000% because a) food is everything, b) cats are not, c) if a boy says he loves you, it probably is a good idea to push him into a vase, to be honest…definitely what I would do, and d) suffering from mental illnesses PLUS having huge expectations on you is really hard and I admire Katniss 100000%.
- LUKE SON OF HERMES: Shhhh, this is my little sneaky one. ANTI-HERO LUKE I LOVE THEE. Okay, wait. Anti-hero? I think he was just an outright villain but…but he just wanted his dad to love him. (Also Luke was the only saving grace of the Percy Jackson movies. I mean, seriously. He’s adorable and the “get off my roof” line is something I use at least once a day. It’s applicable to all situations. Someone takes your cake: answer “get off my roof”.)
- THOMAS: I think Katniss and Thomas would get along famously since neither ever know what’s going on and are rather emotionally reserved. HENCE I LOVE THEM. (Although, again, sometimes I’m not sure if I love Thomas… or Dylan O’Brien playing Thomas in the movies. JURY IS OUT.)
- SAM & GRACE: Again, obviously not “everyone” dislikes these two because the series is a bestseller. BUT. I GOTTA SAY IT: I ADORE AND SHIP THEM MONSTROUSLY HARD. My favourite couple in the series, is, without doubt, Isabel/Cole. But Sam and Grace were sweet. And there aren’t enough SWEET couples out there. They are both poetry and books and origami cranes and coffee shops and promises of forever. Like, excuse me, that is too adorable for words. I’m having about NINE EMOTIONS right now and that’s intense. I hear people say that they’re “bland” and “boring”; but I think they’re real. I think they’d last. I THINK I SHALL SHIP THEIR CUTE WOLFISH HEARTS TO INFINITY.
Completely agree with you about Katniss! People seem to forget about the fact that a) she’s done plenty of things to redeem herself and b) just how much she’s been through! Let’s count: Two Hunger Games. Her father’s death. Her near starvation. The fact that she was the face of a rebellion when we don’t even hear if she wants to be apart of it. I accept that she is a bit emotionless at times, but people need to cut her some slack.
YES ALL OF THOSE REASONS, OMG. YOU ABSOLUTELY GET HER TOO. *flails in relief* Plus some people just as emotionally forthcoming as others, right? And I think Katniss lived in the HARSHEST WORLD OF EVER so of course she was guarding herself.
You are partly right about Snape. He neednt have taken his frustrations on the kids. But Ron, Oh Cait! You break my heart
I’M SORRY!!😭😂 I did like Ron better in bk7! He matured a lot then. hehe.
I totally agree with Celaena and Luke! I used to love Celaena and think she might be one if the best characters in recent’s YA. But then wen QOS arrived…I just wanted to tear her apart. As for Luke…personally, he was quite an interesting characters! (I love him especially in movie~)
Omgggg *hugs you* WE ARE THE SAME. *cries in relief* Celaena’s “change” literally broke my heart. She was one of my FAVOURITE heroines of ever and now? Now I can’t even bear to look at that series. 😭😭
(LUKE THO. <3)
I kept scolding while I finish the series…I just tried my best not to throw away the book. (Well…the beautiful book is innocent…and apparently…i read on e-book…XD)
Oh, hell, I’ve not read many of these but when we agree, we totally agree. WHY HERMIONE WHY?!!! I do not get Hermione!Ron at all. I haven’t read the books, but I was throwing popcorn at the screen. He’s going to bore her to tears when he isn’t behaving badly and then getting all apologetic when the penny finally drops that he’s been an asshat. Oh, Hermione.
Also, Sansa Stark <3 I ,emphatically didn't like her in the first book – she's whingy, she's immature, she's naive, she betrays her family for some flipping lemon cake (okay, and for Her Prince, but it's already clear he's not a Prince to swoon after) – but I love her journey. She certainly grows up and then some, and it's fascinating watching her. Also, re-watching the show (my beloved other is finally watching it for the first time; so much fun to watch first-time reactions!) the actress deserves a cake for the intensity of self-absorbed whining she achieves. (also Katniss: yes. YES. Thank you).
I couldn't think of any characters I had the wrong opinions about until I started blog-hopping this morning and someone said Mark Watney. YES. I thoroughly disliked Mark Watney, and his jock humour took chunks out of my enjoyment of the book. Obviously he's better in the film, because a) fewer mean jokes at the expense of other people who aren't even there and b) Matt Damon.
As for inappropriate love, I'm going to stand up for 2 tv heroines instead: I do not do not do not get the hate for Lori and Andrea in The Walking Dead. I think there’s some serious unforgiveness for sleeping with the wrong people (tch, interwebs) and a lack of serious consideration given to how the zombie apocalypse would mess you up.
OMG I’M SO GLAD I’M NOT ALONE IN THE ANTI-RON-NESS, IMYRIL. *collapses in relief* Most people adore him and I just…don’t…see it? At all? Hermione could’ve done a lot better. Single would even have been better. Ahem.
And I think the thing with Sansa Stark is also: SHE’S LIKE ONLY TWELVE. (Or thirteen? I can’t remember😂) And like that is NOT a very good age for making great decisions!! And I do love her character development and I DO think she was annoying and immature in the first book, but I also thought it was realistic. I’d probably sell my family for cake too…like. On accident. Of course. Never on purpose. AHEM. MOVING FORWARD.
AGH I HAVE NOT SEE THE WALKING DEAD YET. But it’s on my to-do list *nods*
fiNALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOESN’T LIKE RON. The reason I didn’t like him is because he just seemed so “blah” to me. Like, Hermione and Harry were multi-dimensional and Ron was just there. Also, Fremione for the win.
Okay, this isn’t a book, but idk if you watch Supernatural (I’m going to assume you at least know something about it from your repeated and awesome gif use???) but I actually really love Zachariah. He’s JUST SUCH A POOR LITTLE ANGEL BEAN JUST TRYING TO DO HIS OWN JOB, MINDING HIS OWN BUSINESS, AND THEN THE WINCHESTERS COME ALONG AND MESS UP EVERYTHING FOR HIM. I mean, I would be equally pissed, if I were him.
I also really don’t like Balthazar. He seems to me as one of those characters who was supposed to come off as Jack Sparrow-esque, but ended up just being obnoxious.
Ellie | On the Other Side of Reality
OMG STAND WITH ME, ELLIE. I FEEL RATHER ALONE IN MY ANTI-RON-NESS.😂 Also definitely yes; he was pretty dull compared to all the other characters. I honestly wasn’t sure why Harry and him stayed good friends? No other options? Ahem.
DUDE. I LOVE SUPERNATURAL. I ADORE SUPERNATURAL. I WANT TO HUG SUPERNATURAL. (Although I haven’t seen S11 yet because I’ve been too busy to watch *cries*) Ahem. But I’ll leave you to aaaal the Zachariah love. I LOVE MEG THOUGH. <3 *cries for Meg*
Just wanted to say, I don’t like Ron either, ‘specially as he grows older. I don’t ship him and Hermione AT ALL.
MEG YES MEG IS MY CHILD. Question: do you like original Meg or Meg 2.0 better? I like them both equally, but I definitely liked original Ruby better than Ruby 2.0.
Ellie | On the Other Side of Reality
@Ellie: I LOVED ALL THE MEGS. Probably Meg 2.0 better though because HER AND CAS I SHIP IT.
YES I HATE SNAPE AND YES I SHIP HARRY AND LUNA LET’S BE BEST FRIENDS. Although I’d never really thought that about Ron. I guess because I grew up with the series??? Anyway. Yes, I also love Katniss. Her love for Prim is #sistergoals
And I’m also a jaded critical reader when I read HP for the first time soooo WE CAN BLAME ALL MY SNEERING ON THAT.😂 Ahem. BUT YES WHY DIDN’T HARRY/LUNA HAPPEN? WHY DIDN’T LUNA GET MORE PAGE TIME? WHY DIDN’T SHE GET A SPIN-OFF SERIES? I LOVE LUNA.
This is was so interesting!! And I felt you on some of those.
The one that surprised me most was Ron Weasley. Really?!! I also don’t like characters who abuse other characters to cover up that they secretly like them, but I don’t remember Ron being such an arsewipe. I mean, he was definitely an arsewipe for 50% of the series, but I faintly remember him having some redeemable qualities too. O_O Great post!!
AGH YES I’M SORRY ABOUT RON.😂 I just can’t stand him (although he does mature in book 7!!)
(I get you. He gets really bitchy in The Goblet of Fire, and then again in The Deathly Hallows. I was so irritated with him then)
I totally agree with the Snape thing. ‘I loved your mother so I was horrible to you for seven years’ doesn’t make much sense to me really. And I can definitely see where your coming from with the Celaena thing. She did go kind of weird in the last book!
I have to say, I still really don’t like Sansa Stark though (sorry!). For me it’s not that she is girly, it’s that I could see from the start that Joffrey was a little psycho, yet she still saw him as her handsome prince for so long, to the point where she drops her entire family in it so that she gets to stay and marry him. I think the mass hate of her is probably excessive though. She’s annoying and very naive, but definitely not a bad character when you look at the others in that series.
YES OMG THANK YOU FOR SEEING WHAT I MEAN.😂 And plus he was horrible to ALL students (that weren’t Slytherin, I guess). And I really am angry at Dumbledore for LETTING such blatant bullying go on, too. ARGH. Like I did like the series, don’t get me wrong, but it had issues. 😉
Plus, for Sansa, also I want to add: SHE’S THIRTEEN.😂 Which I think is easy to forget in light of the world being so harsh and also the show ageing her up and stuff. And like the Hound calls her the “little bird” because she just repeats what she needs to…but I think it’s also survival. Arya is stabbing people to survive — Sansa is being a parrot to survive. I DO like the contrast. 😛
I can agree with you about Ron, he is just so immature and really quite nasty. I just don’t get what Hermione saw in him.
I’ve not read Game of Thrones yet (I do own them at least). But I’ve seen a few series so far, and I completely get what your saying about Sansa. I really like her and I just don’t understand all the hate she gets. She’s a girly girl and knows what she wants. I can relate to her to an extent cause I’m pretty girly too.
Omgggg, GOOD. I’m glad I’m not alone in my Ron-dislike.😂 I mean, he grew up in the last book, which was great…but 6 books of his immaturity = AGRGHRGH.
I think Sansa is kinda written as a “weaker” character, too, which BUGS ME SO MUCH. I hate this idea of “if you’re feminine, you’re weak” and UGHHH. I WISH BOOKS WOULD STOP WTIH THAT. There is nothing wrong with liking pretty things. *nods emphatically*
Celaena/ Aelin?! NO! That is SO SAD! I think I haven’t actually thought about it THAT much (Oh, who am I kidding, at least once a day) but in still stuck in that scene where Aelin and Dorian are toasting each other and I was thinking – OH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. They started off as mere CHILDREN and now they’re SO grown up and they have KINGDOMS! I want one – and I haven;t really thought about anything else.
That made no sense, but then, do we ever?
Thanks for stopping by A Thousand Words A Million Books!
It did make sense, don’t worry! 😂 😛 I’m honestly in the minority with disliking who Aelin has become? But I LOVED her in the first few books…and her and Dorian and Chaol were like the BEST FRIENDSHIP OF THREE. <3
Oh good, someone else who feels that way about Mal! Solidarity! (When I said this in my reviews, I ended up in a super long discussion about how Nikolai isn’t a great guy either, which was interesting but failed to convince me that Mal was any good.)
STAND WITH ME, NIKKI. We can be anti-Mal people together. *nods* (But but waaaaait. YOU DON’T LIKE NIKOLAI!??! *cries*)
I do like Nikolai! The other commenter didn’t (much). I’m not evil!
OHHHHH. I MIS-READ YOUR COMMENT. *facepalm* Okay. GOOD. I feel better now. *shares cake with you* (I must be more tired than I thought. 😂)
If you’re interested, the comment thread was here!
I do understand why you didn’t like Ron and Snape! 🙂 I love them, but I understand why you don’t. Also, yes Mal! Team Nikolai all the way cause he’s just too fabulous.
I used to love the Throne of Glass series, but then the love triangle got too much for me and in book 3, which I have started a record number of 5 times, there’s another possible love interest introduced which I know is a thing in book 4 because I read it in multiple reviews. And too many POV’s and stuff and gahhh I just… I’m just losing enthusiasm for these books.
Also, I do not hate Katniss! If I were in her shoes, I’d be crawling into a corner and cry.
I’m glad my Ron/Snape rages makes sense at least. 😂 AND FAIR ENOUGH. You can have them. I’ll have Luna and Neville. <333
I've quit on Throne of Glass officially basically😂. There are MUCH better fantasy series out there and I think Game of thrones has kind of ruined me for a lot of fantasy BECAUSE IT WAS SO HUGE AND DETAILED AND AFDKJLSAFD MY EMOTIONS. ahem.
If I was in Katniss' shoes, I would be dead. THE END.😂
Cait, I’m not gonna lie. WE ALL LOVE YOUR OPINIONS. I agree with you for most o thise… especially shipping Luna with the world. The world needs more Lunas, y’know? Sam and Grace are tres fabulous too. I really liked Lark from Shadowlark, though many people though she was cliched. I also thought that Parker from No If I See You First was adorably unlikably– I like her in a way… Also, Etta and Sophia from Passenger are both sorta cliches… but I liked them anyway 🙂
AWW, THANK YOU, SHANTI. *gives you cake* I’m actually really happy at how well everyone’s discussed opposite opinions in the comments without any one being offended. 😂 #maturity AHEM. BUT DUDE YES WE NEED MORE LUNAS. I also demand a series JUST for Luna basically. And I think Sam was sort of Luna-ish, while I’m thinking about it?
I haven’t read Shadowlark yet. Gah. It’s on the to-do list though. And I DID like Parker’s character development!
Completely agree with you with Celaena/Aelin in QoS. I get that she’s growing into being the queen and heir and whatever, but that’s no excuse for her to be horrible to everyone! (and for everyone else to be horrible back, to be fair)
Also Katniss? The whole third book is basically her having an emotional breakdown, isn’t it? I mean it’s been a while since I read it, but I felt like she was full of emotion, all the times she wasn’t being a survivalist bad-ass, that is.
Great list Cait!
AGH YES. I think everyone in that series is getting rather horrible, agreed.😂 I’ve basically quit on it though, but I hope you enjoy the rest of the books!
YES! EXACTLY! Well, I mean, Katniss in Mockingjay IS having an emotional breakdown, but she still does so much, I think…
Yes to everything you said about Celaena! I’m always so happy to find somebody else who feels the same way because I feel like such a black sheep. But she totally just cast her friends off for her better, sexier, stupid Rowan who of course couldn’t just be a friend because that would be ridiculous. And someone she was madly in love with is basically just dead to her now and that makes sense right? Ugh. I am also still emotionally damaged from QoS and I don’t even know if I will continue the series. I’m thinking no.
Omg I am totally with you as well Rebecca.. but I am desperate to see what happens next so I’ll be snapping up the next book asap xD Onwards with the train wreck of Celaena’s social life for the good of Terrasen!
@Rebecca: YES OMG YES. *cries because the books are so unfair* And plus I really do hate how EVERY guy in the book is in love with her. Like…why? She’s a jerk. omg. And Chaol was real. She SWORE she’d always love Chaol and then she was just like “nope! I have a hot fey dude that I like better now, see ya!” SO MUCH RRAAAAAGE FROM ME.
Totally with you on the Mal front, he was so moody he nearly drowned himself in his own broody stew. SHEESH. Also half agree with you on the Jeb front – I was sort of a bit meh about him and his attitude towards Alyssa for the first two books but then book three TORE. MY. HEART. OUT. for various reasons and convinced me he wasn’t so bad. I don’t know how I feel about Echo, I feel like she was the weak point to the whole story, but I did, overall, really quite enjoy the book (#DragonsRepresent).
One of my characters I picked for the ones I dislike was Chaol Westfall because I dare say I sit on the other side of the fence to you here. I never really found him attractive or a good match for Celaena BUT …. I hear what you’re saying about Celaena. She seems to hold fast to friendships and then POOF oops. But I feel like the main problem is how much her character changes in books three so that when she’s back where she is in book four she’s all clunky in her surroundings. Also, Chaol was totally a bitch in QoS, he was so moody it WOUNDED my mind. Despite that I really want to love him – what sorcery is this?! I think Maas just likes to emotionally destroy us and that’s all there is to it.
On The Hunger Games’ front – I chose Gale as one of my characters that I like and others don’t. In my mind Peeta was very average. BUT I don’t think Katniss needed no man, uh-UH! Anyway, anyway, before I turn this into an essay I shall stop – but this is my post if you feel so inclined to peruse my ranting :p
Great post!!
YUS. Mal was a moody mammoth that’s for sure. And it got SO IRRITATING after a while. -_- and I think Jeb and Mal are very similar characters actually, now that I think about it?! Hmm. But I did like how Ensnared turned out SO THERE’S THAT.😂
I did like the dragons in The Girl At Midnight too!! DRAAAAGONS!!!
DUUUUUUDE. HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT ABOUT PRECIOUS CHAOL!??! 😂 Just kidding. I’m quite fine. More Chaol for me. 😉 I actually loved Chaol in QoS and would’ve been behind him if he’d, um, like, smacked her in the face? But he did not. #sad. 😉 😂 OKAY OKAY. So we’ll probably just agree to have WILDLY different Throne of Glass feelings right?!? I won’t be reading the next book but I hope you like it!!
KATNISS DIDN’T NEED A MAN. But I do love Peeta. (But seriously she was WAY too emotionally damaged to settle down with a guy for a loooong time…)
The only one I can think of definitively for this is Mare Barrow. I know I’ve complained about her before on here, but, ugh, that girl was such a whiner. Every other word out of her mouth was a pity party and, honestly, I thought she made some pretty stupid moves. I also hated all the love interests and there were three, which I already don’t like love triangles but a love square? Just put me out of my misery. Bottom line is that everyone loved that book and I hated it. I’m ashamed to own it in hardback.
Oh, and this is not a character, but it’s a book so I’ll bend the rules. I actually don’t really like Pride and Prejudice. It’s a good book, don’t get me wrong, but through my life my mom’s watched the movie so much that I can’t stand the story any more. Thanks for ruining it, mom. :/
GOSH, MARE BARROW. She was so lame and lacked depth, haha! (IMHO) Some people are like, “She’s a strong heroine who takes no crap!” And I’m like, O.o Seriously? She’s whiny and forgettable, to me…
Goodness, yes. She was whining all the time! I mean, I get it, your life sucks, but that doesn’t mean I want to hear you moan about all every second.
I’m so poor, the Stilts are terrible, silvers are evil blah, blah, blah.
Haha YES!
@Katherine: DUDE YES. I WILL COMPLAIN INFINITELY WITH YOU ABOUT MARE. Plus her name is just ridiculous, omg. And the love interests all befuddled me….like, why? What did they even see in this girl? I DON’T KNOW. That book boggles me for being so famous, tbh. I’M ASHAMED TO OWN TWO COPIES.😂 Although in my defence, I got sent them by publishers so…at least I spent no money on this.😂
I haven’t even SEEN Pride and Prejudice. This is probably because I can’t spell it. And also because period dramas drive me crazy.
I spent twenty dollars on that dang hard back. :/ Some day I’m going to be a famous bean like you so publishers will send me books. #lifegoals
Period dramas drive me crazy too. All their tea and biscuits and long conversations and love interests, ew. So of course the woman in my home LOVE them and must watch them all the time. There is no BLOOD, Cait. I need BLOOD.
The exception to this is Jane Eyre, which should be watched because it is creepy and amazing and has people LIVING IN THE WALLS.
*jumps in*
YES YES JANE EYRE IS AWESOME
The newest one, at least… I haven’t seen any others.
Yes, please do jump in. 😀
I KNOW. You can never go wrong with people in the walls, right? Plus her childhood back story = epic and engaging. I really do love the character.
It’s one of my favorite books, BY THE WAY. X’D
AGH THE PAIN AND SUFFERING OF SPENDING A LOT ON AN UNLIKED BOOK. 😭 *pats shoulder*
And omg, I so so concur with this. Books need blood. That’s all there is to it. MUCH. B.L.O.O.D.
Yes Katniss is the best! I don’t understand why people don’t like her 🙁 And yeah, I also agree with you – Celaena becomes overly dismissive of her old friends and only likes her new ones. She doesn’t even care about Chaol and Dorian anymore. The original three have parted ways 🙁
She is aaaaamazing! It always boggles me when people say she’s whiny or bland, I MEAN, SAY WHAT?!?! She is amazing and tough and emotional and damaged and YET STILL FIGHTING AND LOVING HER FAMILY AND OMG. <3
YES! ANTI-HEROES ARE THE BEST! THEY GET THINGS DONE! XD
…Ahem.
I agree with you on Snape (yeah, I get that he wasn’t all bad but, um, why does everyone act like he’s Saint Snape – just no) but not on Ron. Ron is too awesome, and I DID want him to get with Hermione. 🙂 I do see your side though.
I LOVE Sam and Grace too. They’re not bland at all.
I find it super easy to relate to characters. Observe.
Character *Sarcasms* (Totally a word.)
Me: I have found my spirit animal!
Double points if they’re really cute/innocent-looking until they open their mouth. 😉
ANTI-HEROES FTW!!! Um…also, ahem. okay. We might need therapy? WHO CAN KNOW.
It’s definitely not Saint Snape to me.😂 Bullying children SO MUCH that he literally psychologically scarred them?! (Hello Neville.) And then that creepy obsession with Lily, like even AFTER she was married?! Scary.
SARCASMS IS A WORD. AND I RELATE TO THAT EXPERIENCE YOU DESCRIBED. I always root for the witty one. :’)
I’m sorry Cait, I just can’t agree about Ron and Snape. I love them. I love them to pieces. And I’m a proud Ron/Hermione shipper. Opposites attract, and I think Ron was a realistic, dimensional character (AND I’M SORRY BUT DEAR LORD RUPERT GRINT VIA COS WAS MY FIRST CRUSH OKAY. WELL, ACTUALLY I DEVELOPED A REALLY BIG CRUSH ON HERMIONE AROUND THE SAME TIME. BUT NEVER HARRY. *shrugs*) Also Snape’s dry sense of humor IS LIFE FOR ME.
But it’s totally okay, I can see why you disagree. : )
Also, I can agree on HARRY AND LUNA YES YES YES.
Excellent post as always, Cait.
ALSO I LOVE KATNISS (AND PEETA FLIPPING MELLARK) I DON’T EVEN COMPREHEND HOW SOMEONE COULD NOT.
AHHH I MEANT CAIT YOU ARE NOT A CAT. *shakes head fervently* Apologies, my INTJ overlord.
Maybe I should just call you Cake.
ALL MY “I”‘s IN MY FIRST COMMENT DISAPPEARED I SWEAR THEY WERE THERE BEFORE WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE “I”S. *panics* They’re showing up for me?? I’ll try to fix this, omggg.
Call me Cake though. That also works. Ahem.
HEHE, okay!! We’ll agree to disagree on Ron and Snape. 😂 And honestly Harry is my favourite of the series. <3 Along with Hermione and then Luna and Neville and Fred/George. <333
Let me clarify, I always really liked Harry as a character, just not as much as the others. Also, little Em never developed a book boyfriend crush (or movie boyfriend) crush on him.
Okay, I never cared much for Mal, and I’m glad I’m not the only one! I just thought he had no depth. And his affection for her seemed sudden and random. Like… I couldn’t believe him.
As for Celaena: I can understand your feelings towards her. I had the opposite thing happen; I didn’t like her at first, but came to enjoy her. I forgive her for changing friends in HoF/QoS because her friends, um, kind of traumatized and betrayed her, soooo there’s that… O.O She’s been through a lot and has a hard time trusting people at that point! But I WAS never really content with the way she cut things off with Chaol. I think things could have worked between them, if she had a different attitude and was willing to see the big picture. :/
*can’t comment on too many other books here because hasn’t read them or is emotionally neutral*
OH, except Katniss!! YES KATNISS IS GREAT. And why would people say she is emotionless?? First: What is wrong with being emotionless? Second: She definitely has emotions. Anyone can see that. Sheesh. ;D
PLUS Mal spent like 2929894 chapters in a SULK because of something or other…and he wouldn’t want Alina to do anything because he was “protecting her” *snorts* Dislike. DISLIKE.
I feel like most people either didn’t love Celaena to start and NOW love her…or vice versa. 😂 Which is kind of interesting, right!??! I’m still of the opinion that Chaol did NOT betray her and I don’t understand how he did, when he went to SAVE her and didn’t even KNOW what was happening with Nessarina (that is not her name, omg, but I totally forget what it is😭 I’M TERRIBLE). Also I thought Rowan was Celaena’s cousin? So I think their thing is creepy…But maybe I misread and he’s not.
EMOTIONALLY NEUTRAL.😂 YOU’RE FABULOUS.
Yeah, he didn’t really betray her!!! He made a poor decision, I guess, but he was fulfilling his duty as Captain of the Guard. I was just like, GOSH, CELAENA, GET OVER IT.
Haha, Rowan I think is sort of distantly related to Celaena, but it’s pretty distant. And Aedion is her cousin! I think you got those characters confused. 😉 I saw in your review of QoS that you couldn’t remember who Aedion was from HoF. Haha, that’s probably why! ;D
AND THANK YOU, I KNOW. xD
Agh, I do know Aedion is her cousin and I don’t think I confused them… I think I just WAS confused. Because like she was meeting Maeve (omg I don’t know if that’s the right name either) in Heir of Fire who IS related (right???) so I thought that equalled Rowan being related? bUT WHO CAN EVEN KNOW AND I ADMIT TO FORGETTING DETAILS. SO I’LL JUST TRUST YOU.😂
Haha, I don’t know, it was complicated and I could still be wrong. x’D BUT OH WELL. I just can’t wait for the next book.
I refuse to talk about Ron in this context because to be Romione forever… But I totally understand about Snape. He may have been “secretly saving” Harry all that time, but that was never a queue for him to be a bully. I hate people who say that their favourite character in the Harry potter series is Snape becauseWHY. WHY WHEN YOU CAN CHOOSE POEPLE LIKE LUNA OR HERMIONE.
HAHA. OKAY THAT’S FINE.😂 All free to ship who they want here! And soooo much agreement for Snape. *nods* Also can we admit that his obsession with Lily (especially after she was then married) was a little creepy??!
I am with you on MAL! I never liked him. And I hated how he noticed Alina only after other guys noticed her as well. I never believed their love. #TeamNikolai forever.
And there is one character from Red Rising trilogy who received quite a lot of hate and negative opinions lately. But since you havent read Morning Star I am not going to tell who and why. But I will forever defend this person because I totally get this person and his/her reasons for everything (hopefully I am being vague enough).
YAYYAY #TEAMNIKOALI!! I’m forever angry at how that ended up though…I honestly think Nikolai was just shoved out of the way to make the love triangle less hard. 😭 GRRRR. Ahem.
Omg yes don’t talk about Morning Star to me yet. 😂 I was going to read it this weekend buuuut A Gathering of Shadows arrived?! AND it’s smaller and less daunting so I’m going with that.😂 I’ll come shriek Red Rising-ish thoughts at you when I’m done!!
Totally agree with you about Snape (He held a candle for a girl AFTER SHE MARRIED AND HAD A KID?! HOW IS THAT OKAY?!), Ron (love him but srsly dude take a chill pill), and Katniss (people forget how totally awesome she is – I’m just like, “Hello, you’d be messed up if you had to go through all of that, too!!!”) Oh and I love Thomas (and Dylan O’Brien. Both is good.).
I KNOOOOOOOW. Ugh. It was beyond creepy. Like people get so mad at Twilight for having an obsessive/creepy romance, but Snape totally did too! NOT OKAY.
I am ALL for Sansa, Queen in the North! She deserves so much retribution in the last two books and I think she is going to get it. My least favorite Stark is Bran, for the record. And I really want to reread The Hunger Games! I liked Katniss a lot. I can’t think of too many opposite characters right now but maybe the Scarlet/Wolf ship from The Lunar Chronicles. Most bloggers I know love them the most but they are my least favorite. I still like them, just not as much as everyone else!
DUDE YES. But then knowing GRRM..I’m trying not to hope she gets retribution. But if she like accidentally STABBED LITTLE FINGER IN THE EYE…I’d be so okay with that. Ahem. And Bran is really irritating, I agree. 🙁 Although Robb is an idiot so THERE’S THAT. (My favourite Stark is Jon Snow. <33 AND HE IS A STARK, NO ONE CAN SAY OTHERWISE TO ME. *cuddles precious icicle Jon*)
That is so true but HE HAS TO GIVE US SOMETHING. Omg so my pet theory, which is admittedly really messed up, is that she poisons Sweetrobin (because I hate him) and blames it on Littlefinger. And also yesssss, stabs Littlefinger in the eye hahaha. Hah. Hah. Oh Robb, too noble and stupid for his own good… JON IS TOTALLY A STARK. R+L=J, it is known.
OMGGG MORGAN. I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. That would be wonderful if she poisoned Robin. (Omg I can’t believe I just said that, but seriously….) Or poisons Little Finger himself? I would love that too. Ahem.
I LIKE THAT THEORY SO MUCH THOUGH. HE IS TOTALLY A STARK. JON FOR KING.
I like Mal, but I LOVE Nikolai and honestly he’s a much more interesting character. I mean, he INVENTS FLYING SHIPS, and is a PRINCE who would kind of RATHER NOT BE A PRINCE and who has ALIASES. (I love Sturmhond.) And I also love the twins because they are awesome, but I’m getting off topic here. Anyway, there were moments in the books where I just wanted Alina to marry Nikolai, okay? (I would have married him.) #TeamNikolai
Sam and Grace are so cutesy and I love them too. And I have yet to read The Maze Runner but I have seen the movie and did very much like Thomas (maybe because of Dylan O’Brien. Maybe as in definitely). I’m going kind of off topic again, but I love him as Stiles in Teen Wolf!!! <3
I feel like everyone's least favorite Raven Boy is Adam, but I love his character for many reasons.
DUDE YES. NIKOLAI WAS SO MUCH MORE COMPLEX AND ADORABLE AND HILARIOUS. I mean, he was building flying things and aLWAYS had a witty comeback?! <3 But I guess if Alina doesn't want him...*moves into Grishaland and marries Nikolai myself* Ahem.
The Maze Runner book is different to the movie but it's still a REALLY good adaption! AND OMG STILES. <33 I'm a few seasons behind on that but AHHH I LOVE HIM. HE'S SO CUTE AND ADORABLE AND FUNNY. (Why are the funny ones always the best?!)
My least favourite Raven Boy is Adam.😂 BUT I STILL LOVE HIM. He's complicated and damaged and I appreciate that 1000% because omg, he just needs someone to love him.
AND he’s one of those characters who doesn’t end up with a love interest, so he’s totally free for us to dream fictionally about and we don’t have to feel guilty about it because he’s not already taken. (Is it just me who feels this way??) Like with some characters you totally want them to end up with the love interest and then others you just want to keep all to yourself, you know??? Especially if you despise the love interest.
The funny ones are always the best. <333 Particularly Stiles, though, hahaha. He's my favorite TV show character of like, all time.
I KNOW, He kind of is my least favorite too and that's why I feel bad that he seems to be everyone's least favorite even though we still love him. I hope he's somebody's favorite. I mean I want to love each of the raven boys equally but but GANSEY. And RONAN. And the adorably sad puppy ghost NOAH. (Am I the only one who compares him to a puppy? Probably so.)
OMG TOO TRUE THOUGH. I kind of was a little bit happy Nikolai is single for that reason. 😂 AHEM. And omg I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN. Some ships I ship so so much…and other ships well…*borrows Nikolai for self forever* Ahem.
STILES IS AMAZINGNESS. EVERYTHING HE DOES IS JUST TOO INCREDIBLE. <33
I knoooow. GANSEY. <3 Ronan is probably my most favourite, but only slightly because GANSSSSEY. And Noah is so tragic that I love him. BUT HONESTLY I JUST WANT TO HAVE MY OWN COLLECTION OF RAVEN BOYS. COLLECT THEM ALL, KINDA THING YOU KNOW?
YES YES YES! YES INDEED. <33
I know what you mean about Ron and Snape, but I tend to forgive them because Snape had a really terrible life, and Ron – well, he’s a teenage boy. Aren’t they all a bit like that? Totally agree about Harry and Luna though, I thought I was the only one who thought that!
My TTT: http://basedonthebook.blogspot.co.uk/2016/03/10-under-loved-literary-characters.html
BUT HARRY WASN’T LIKE THAT. Harry wasn’t teasing/pushing/asserting unnecessary authority over first-years! And I don’t think anyone EVER has an excuse (whether it’s bad childhood/being a boy) to be rude or awful to people. *heavy sigh* I’m glad you’re a Harry/Luna shipper though.😂
Not an excuse, but an explanation? Harry had a better time than Snape – he had friends. And I like to think Ron got better after puberty!
Love the idea for this post! I guess I don’t read as much as I should, though, because I only recognized one of the characters on each of the lists. But it’s interesting that you see Ron as a bully! I read the HP books AGES ago, so I don’t remember in good detail what happened, but it’d definitely put things in a new light when I reread them.
Eeep, sorry about that. 😂 I guess I did choose a few more obscure ones?! BUT YUS. I mean, I think I would’ve viewed HP very differently if I’d grown up with it — but as an adult, all Ron’s little bullying in the background drove me crazy. I hated how Harry and Hermione mostly just ignored it too. Ron had such ISSUES and no reason to have them. *glares*
Yes, I can’t say that I cared for Harry winding up with Ginny. It would of been much more fun for him to marry Luna.;)
Good point on Katniss being reserved. It makes me like her all the more.;)
YAYAYAY. ANOTHER HARRY LUNA SHIPPER. Can we call them Huna? Larry? 😂
I agree with you on Jeb and Mal. While I’m kind of okay with Mal, I absolutely dislike Jeb. Why do childhood friends tend to notice the girl when she’s finally off with someone else?? That’s not cool and that’s a trope that needs to end. And they don’t protect her, they’re more like controlling and hampering Alyssa and Alina (oh look their name is similar).
People will come after me with pitchforks, but I actually dislike Cath from Fangirl. I know some people think her relatable, and I have nothing against it, like it’s your opinion, so we’re cool. But in my personal opinion, she’s so immature, afraid, clingy, and just UGH in general.
DUDE YES. Jeb was just an abominable jerk. I don’t even know why Alyssa never asserted some authority over him either?? Like she just let herself be pushed around by his issues? Gah. It is controlling. And i hate when the controlling-boys are pitched as “oh it’s just love”. NO IT’S NOT LOVE. IT’S CONTROL ISSUES.
Ok, so of all the books you’ve mentioned, I’ve only read The Hunger Games and Harry Potter. I like Ron! I like Katniss! I am not Snape’s biggest fan, but when we find everything out! Oh, my heart!
Everything else I was trying to work out who everyone was based on what you said, but I think I got it! I still need to read Throne of Glass and Splintered. Ooh, I read Shiver, but I hated it. Sorry. >.> (I have only just realised the photos you took include the books… d’oh.)
I can’t really think of anyone I like/dislike that others don’t. I think I generally agree, unless I don’t like a book. :/ I feel ordinary now. Haha!
I was a bit emotional when I found out Snape’s reveal because I LEGIT READ IT THE DAY ALAN RICKMAN DIED. I was just listening to the audiobook and then I went online and — BOOM. So that totally screwed with my emotions. 😭
OMGGGG. YOU HATED A MAGGIE STIEFVATER BOOK?!?! JO. YOU BREAK MY HEART.💔
(But I’m nice and I’ll forgive you.😂)
I share your Vulcan sensibilities 😉 I’m usually *that* person too.
So, at the risk of being virtually tomato-ed, here we go: I really don’t like Celaena , and Ron irritated the heck out of me. (I only read Harry Potter a couple years ago, myself). And speaking of HP, another character that I disliked – Dumbledore. Obnoxious, willfully obfuscating, and shamelessly using children to do all the dangerous stuff. *Waves a disapproving finger in his direction.”
As for the Hunger Games, the only characters I really liked were Cinna and Johanna.
Maze Runner – Newt and Minho were the only ones I remembered by the time I saw the movie (I actually liked Thomas more in the movie than in the book, which is unusual for me.)
While I never made it more than ten pages into Game of Thrones, I agree with what you’re saying about more traditionally feminine characters. They tend to get picked on a lot because they aren’t hip. A truly strong female character is strong in herself, whether she wants to marry Prince Charming, or spends her time hunting down criminals as a vigilante.
Ooh, VULCANS UNITE. Like…quietly. And probably very irregularly because we probably prefer to be alone in our unfeelingness too. *shrugs* AHEM. WHAT WERE WE SAYING?
Dude. You are not going to get tomatoed here! I’ll stand you in the anti-Celaena corner. 😂 I cannot stand her anymore. AND DUDE I HAVE SUCH MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT DUMBLEDORE. I liked that he was flawed, but I can’t forgive him for, like you said, endangering children (like “here Harry, you’re only 17 but go do the most dangerous job of them all without help because fun!”) and also letting Snape be a teacher and maliciously bully student. NEVILLE’S WORST FEAR WAS SNAPE! Like how psychologically damaging is that for a child?!?!?! I AM SO FURIOUS WITH DUMBLEDORE FOR THAT.
Ahem.
Thomas is adorable. <333 Dylan O'Brien helps though, let's be honest. ahem.
And DUDE. YES. I mean, Sansa was a whiny character...but she was pitted against her tough/spunky sister in terms of "which sister should you like" and I HATE how the punching-sister always is labelled "more awesome". It's really just advancing wrong messages and I hate it. 🙁
I never saw Ron like a “bad” character… But I obviously totally agree for Katniss and Thomas. Katniss is me how she thinks and all that stuff. Well everyone I know hates Katniss and when they say it I’m like “ok, well I don’t like you”. They often say “why, can’t I say my opinion?” and I always shut up but in my mind I’m just telling them that I’m like her so that’s logic.
Haha, I know what you mean! Actually, I had someone ask me my favourite book, to which I replied the Hunger Games, and they totally SHREDDED the book in front of me. Like saying how it was horrible about children murdering…and I’m like “You so have not read the book.” ARGHGGHGH. It’s really horrible when people just diss your opinion, right?! FREE OPINIONS FOR ALL. You can like Ron and I can be cranky at him…😂 FREEEEDOM!
It’s better to have your own opinion about a series rather than go along with what’s popular! I’ve noticed that in book club meetings where someone appreciates a certain plot point or character and I’m thinking, “I didn’t get that at all when reading, so I don’t really care.” It feels good to speak up and bring other opinions to the table, because it’s usually a relief for someone else; they aren’t alone.
So true, Whitney! 😉 And I do love how voicing some unpopular opinions often bring other supporters out of the woodwork. 😂 UNITE IN OUR ODDNESS.
Mal annoys me, and Celeana just confuses me. Way too many mood swings with that one!
AGREED! It’s like Celaena is a completely different character?! SO CONFUSED.😭
I saw you mention Mal and was like NO WHAT MAL IS AWESOME COME AND FIGHT ME and then I realized that you meant Mal from a book and not Mal from Firefly. So, uh, carry on. And, also, I don’t get why people don’t like Sam and Grace? I mean, yeah, it was slightly insta-lovey, but I feel like they have one of the more realistic romances I’ve read.
Also, I really hate the feminine=weak thing. I’M not a super feminine person, but I know a girl who’s like five-foot-one, wears pastels, does ballet, and has a pink-filled room, yet she also did martial arts for years and could totally kill you if you offended her.
Omg, I haven’t even seen (read?) Firefly so YOU’RE SAFE.😂 And zomg, I will fight for Sam/Grace forever. They WERE real. And I don’t think it was particularly insta-lovey because they did get to know each other just…when….he was a wolf? THAT COUNTS. I’M SURE IT DOES. basically: “Hello, I love you because you didn’t eat me when your other wolf friends tried to”. #shipit
And SAME. I’m not very squishily feminine either but I really hate how that gets just so sneered at these days. It’s like people think being a feminist means you can only like tough things. NO. (Also that girl you know would be an AWESOME book character.😂 I WOULD LOVE READING THAT.)
I agree with all of these, except for Ron. *hugs Ron* I love him. Also I ship him and Hermione. LUKE AGH his death gave me so much pain and sadness.
My number 1 character that everyone hates but I love is Tauriel from the Hobbit movies. Like sure, she wasn’t in the book, but her character was in completely in line with everything that had come before her.
#KEEPCALMANDLOVETAURIEL
LUKE NEEDED A HAPPY ENDING AND REDEMPTION. STILL NOT OVER THAT. *cries a bucket of tears*
Hehe, so now is when I confess that I have only watched the first Hobbit movie.😂 They’re just SO LONG. But she seemed pretty epic from what I saw?!?
I know we’ll never agree, but I love myself some Severus Snape. Flaws and all. Katniss made my list, too…but I’m one of the people who really didn’t care for her. I didn’t dislike her, but she just didn’t seem to have much personality. I admired her strength, though!
That’s okay! YOU CAN HAVE ALL OF SNAPE.😂 And I shall cuddle Katniss. :’) (Okay, that’s probably a terrible idea BUT YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN😂)
Your TTT posts never fail to make me laugh, Cait! I TOTALLY agree with you on the Mal thing (everyone is dragging him through the dirt today and it’s AWESOME). How does he even compare when near Nikolai and The Darkling? How Alina didn’t ravage Nikolai multiple times through the trilogy is utterly beyond me. I agree to an extent on Celaena (Aelin, whatever the fuck her name is). No one else seems to realize she’s a completely different person! There’s a way she can be both Celaena and Aelin, since Celaena was such a huge part of her. And I took major offense when Rowan and Aedion were disgusted with how Aelin transformed into Celaena when she went to the Assassins Guild. Celaena was not, and will never, be a horrible person. SHE LIKES TO READ AND EAT CHOCOLATE CAKE AND LOVES PUPPIES AND SOMETIMES STABBING PEOPLE. HOW IS THAT ANY DIFFERENT FROM AELIN?
Great list! 🙂
Awww, I’m really glad about that. 😂 THANK YOU.
Omg, but really?! I’m not alone in my Mal dislike?! *sighs in relief* I think the author kind of shot herself in the foot there with pitching whiny-Mal against the AWESOMENESS that was the other options.😂
Zomg, but YES. It’s like Aelin had a personality flip?! That’s not character development. That’s the author-got-tired-of-writing-her-character-so-massively-changed-it. *growls* And I really hated how they all despised the Celaena half of her. That’s the half I loved. And what about all the stuff she said to Chaol? like “I’LL ALWAYS COME BACK TO YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE MY HOME” and all that??? DOES THAT MEAN NOTHING NOW??!???!??!?!? *cries*
Oh my goodness.
“Polite sarcasm”
YOU HAVE MY FULL SUPPORT IN MAKING THAT A THNG, OKAY?
Loved this post! <3
OKAY. LET’S DO IT, HANNAH. LET’S MAKE IT A THING. I’LL PROVIDE TEE-SHIRTS AND CAKE THAT SAY “POLITE SARCASM”.
THANK YOU
I haven’t read all of the books that you mentioned, BUT YOUR HARRY POTTER CHARACTERS ARE SPOT ON!!!!!!!!! I’ve never liked Snape. Yes, he went through a lot of pain. BUT SO DID HALF THE CHARACTERS IN THOSE BOOKS! That doesn’t give him an automatic pass to be a terrible person. Sorry, Snily fans. As far as Ron, I’ve never loved him either. Like, I don’t hate him with the passion that I hate Snape. But he just seemed really flat, and I didn’t think that he was good enough for Hermione at all. AND YES HARRY AND LUNA!! I’M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THINKS THAT YAY! I always thought they were super cute. Luna was one of my favorite characters, sooooo. Then again, Ginny has grown on me, so I don’t completely hate the fact that Harry ended up with her.
I can kind of understand why some people are annoyed by Katniss, but I never hated her like some bloggers seem to. Like, HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF YOU GOT THROWN INTO THE FLIPPING HUNGER GAMES?????? Gosh. SHE’S SUPPOSED TO BE HUMAN HUMANS AREN’T PERFECT.
Rant over.
XD Ioved this post, Cait:)
OMG I’M SO GLAD WE ARE HARRY POTTERED AGREED HERE. *hi five* Nothing ever gives a human rights to mistreat other humans because they’re in pain. Not ever. And the fact that Dumbledore LET Snape bully children…??? That also disturbs me. I don’t even know why Lily chose James over Snape anyway? I think their backstory was terribly underdone, tbh. Like this huge build up for…not much explanation? HMM. OMG BUT LUNA IS THE MOST PRECIOUS DARLING OF THE UNIVERSE AND I LOVE HER.<3 Failing Harry, at least she should have Neville. <3
CELAENA! I used to love her too, but she changed so much over the course of the last few books and I don’t like it. She has almost lost EVEN MORE of her humanity. She has become much colder. I know she has gone through so much, but I miss the old Celaena. As far as Katniss goes, I have mixed feelings. She was just a little too whiny at times. I totally agree that she had lots of emotion, I just didn’t like all of her pity parties (which make sense with all she went through, but still…) LUKE IS SO FUNNY! AHAHAHAHA! I feel like I shouldn’t have liked him, but I DID! And then there is Octavian who everyone hates (I hope). Thomas is just wonderful (& Dylan O’Brien certainly enhances that ;)) Here is my TTT: https://aubreysbooknook.wordpress.com/2016/03/08/top-ten-tuesday-characters-to-love-or-not-to-love/
I miss the old Celaena too.😭 I don’t even know who she IS anymore?!?? And plus I’m endlessly anoyed that Chaol/Dorian have been dumped from the important story line. I’m pretty extra sure I quit on that series.😭 AHEM.
BUT OMG KATNISS??? WHINY???? We’ll have to agree to disagree.😂 hehe But zomg LUKE. <3 I'm glad you liked him too. And Dylan O'Brien... HOW IS HE SO FANTASTIC OMG.
Omigoodness, that comment about Jeb and Morpheus so true. Jeb drove me crazy, but so did Alyssa,
Hehe. Okay I ADMIT. Alyssa isn’t my favourite protagonist ever. But Morpheus more than makes up for that. <33 I WOULD READ A WHOLE SERIES ABOUT MORPHEUS BASICALLY.
I do agree with you on how feminine characters are often considered ‘weak’. I love my Buffy characters. Girly yet tough yet vulnerable but not at all weak. It’s somehow a natural assumption that girls who like being girls aren’t capable of being strong, independent heroines in their own right. I just didn’t think that Sansa was that. However, I haven’t read the entire series. And I do grow to enjoy her character and how she grows in the show. It’s my understanding that she is portrayed as much stronger in the show than in the books.
OMG I AGREE WITH YOU SO MUCH. I know that people went really “anti-pink/feminine things” to try and douse the sexism or whatever, but that’s NOT the way to handle it. You are not less awesome for liking feminine things. Same as you’re not better/less for being able to punch people in the face. I love BOTH kind of girl characters, but I hate how the ones we are supposed to admire are girls like Arya, or Tris, or Celaena or whatever. Sansa was really smart to just be ALIVE.😂
But oh oh I agree: Sansa was a bit whiny and pretty pathetic at times. But she was also…13. In the show she’s aged up, too, I believe? I just think, when pitched against Arya, both of them were pretty immature/annoying.😂 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FTW.
I don’t dislike the idea of Ginny and Harry together, but I never really cared one way or the other about it. But dude. Now I really wish that Luna and Harry had been a thing. That would have been epic!
My TTT.
Yusssss. I’m glad you like it. 😂 And I honestly didn’t feel much about Ginny/Harry either…and I think that was the problem?! Like he was THE MAIN CHARACTER and Ginny was never around because they wouldn’t let her fight. LUNA. <3 I wish Luna had had SO much more page time.
I ADORE MAL WITH MY LIFE AND GALE AS WELL. JAJAJAJ OPINIONS
HAHA. OH WE ARE OPPOSITES THEN. 😂 BUT NO MATTER. You can have them, and I’ll have Nikolai and Peeta. Life = perfect. 😂
Irrelevant to the actual topic of the post (since I can’t think of anything in response to the character question and haven’t read any of these…) but I adore your photography and love how it’s been becoming more jungle-y. And Persian.YOU LIVE IN A PERSIAN JUNGLE WITH BOOKS. (I know Persian jungles probably aren’t a thing but they SHOULD BE.) Peacock feathers are the best and I have some in my room. 😀 (YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY THOUGH.) (Also aaaanti-heroes! Sometimes…)
OMGGGGGG. I AM SO SO HAPPY YOU SAID THAT. <33 I honestly have been struggling a bit, hehe, so I'm glad that my efforts are paying off.😂 I really LIKE photographing like this but it's kind of different to what I was originally doing?! BUT ANYWAY. PERSIAN JUNGLES SHOULD BE A THING. I stole my mum's peacock feathers. Shhhh. When one is a book photographer, they may or may not sneak around the house "borrowing" things that would be good in photos.
ANTI-HERO LOVE FOREVERRRRRR. <3
So much hate for Ron today. It make me sad. But yes to the Katniss love! She is one of my favorites! I’ve only read the first book in A Song of Fire and Ice, so I can’t say how I really feel about Sansa’s character. But I do agree that the backlash for girls who like to be feminine is wrong. Being feminine does not make you weak or stupid. Maybe someday people will learn that. 🙂
Oh really??! I hadn’t seen him on anyone else’s lists yet. 😛 (Although if he is, that kind of makes me relieved because I feel like a real oddball not liking him here. 😂) BUT YAYYY THAT WE AGREE ON KATNISS!!
And exactly. *nods* I really don’t like it how all the girls we should “aspire to” in literature, are the ones that kick people in the face. I mean, don’t get me wrong: I love characters like Katniss and Tris. But I aspire to be like Hermione or or…idek. CALM PEACEFUL PEOPLE PROBABLY. Wearing a dress and liking pink makes you awesome, not less.
One of my strongly felt character opinions is Juliet and Warrener from the Shatter Me series. I have no idea why they are together. I also started to hate Adam after the first book. I think Juliet should have just gotten a dog instead and invite Kenji over to make her laugh more. The ending to the Shatter Me series frustrates me. I agree with your thoughts about Mal and Alina from Shadow and Bone completely. Am I surprised you mentioned cake? Nope. What is your favorite type of cake? Mine is chocolate:P I don’t really think that I relate to characters, when I do it freaks me out and I usually stop reading. I like to think I walk to the beat of my own drum, and just love to read books for the creativity (plus I’m addicted).
I hated Adam too.😭 He did that personality flip too?!? Like I didn’t even RECOGNISE him in the next two book. It was soooo weird…but zomg, Kenji and Juliette’s friendship is my FAVOURITE. Kenji is basically my favourite. I LOVE THAT SERIES FOR KENJI.
(My favourite kind is chocolate brownie cheesecake, but honestly? I’m an equal cake opportunist.)
Hehhe, but I DO understand about not really relating to characters! I MEAN I DO SOMETIMES??? But very very rarely.
I think Katniss could be quite emotional too! I also LOVE that you ship Harry/Luna, because I do too. I really think they would have been great together. 🙂
I still need to read Ensnared, but yeah, Jebedeiah (I can’t spell…whatever) really sucks at letting Alyssa live.
-Lauren
AHHHH I’M GLAD YOU SHiP HARRY/LUNA TOO!! I think Luna was one of the best characters and HIGHLY under-used in the series. I want a Luna spin-off series.😭
Mostly he’s just Jeb. 😂 BUT I’M GLAD YOU DON’T LIKE HIM EITHER. HEHE. I mean that series is my FAVOURITE but I have no idea why Alyssa kept Jeb around, tbh. (Ensnared is amazing tho. <33)
Oh a fellow Vulcan. Finally.
Oh my poor heart. I love Ron and Snape. But I do fear that if I’d actually read the books for the first time as an adult I would have a different opinion. Thankfully my child hood love defeats those fears every time I re-read.
I cannot understand Mal’s appeal in anyway. He is a whiny jerk. And God do I wish she didn’t cop out in R&R. You get me!
Celaena was absolutely my girl until she became Aelin. I love finding people that agree with me, since we seem to be far and few. I feel nothing but very negative thoughts towards her. EVERYTHING you said is on point. I will be reading TOG#5 but no for her and Rowan. I will be reading for everyone else. Especially my hope that Dorian and Chaol realize their romantic love for each other. BECAUSE YES! SHIP!
It has been years since I read the Wolves of Mercy Falls series, but I love Sam and Grace. I love that trilogy. I don’t get why it gets so much flack. It’s a wonderfully romantic werewolf story with Stiefvaters magical writing.
*waves* HELLO FELLOW VULCAN. COME STAND VULCANISHLY WITH ME.😂
I do think being an adult reading HP for the first time did impact my love of it a lot…probably not always in a good way. #mybad😂
YUS MAL WAS SO WHINY. I just wanted him to stoooop most of the time. Omg. I didn’t like R&R AT ALL. *weeps*
And AGREED!! Cealeana was amazing. Aelin is a horrible creature and I can’t even stand her. I won’t be reading #5 unless I hear some staggeringly good things.😂 I feel like SJM just dumped Chaol and Dorian out of the story for no reason. Why? Like why build characters when you don’t even plan to keep them…??? And adding in Rowan and Aedion who are both BORING and bland. GAHHHHHH. I WILL NEVER BE OKAY. A SERIES I LOVED IS RUIEND.😭
YES YES YES RE: CELEANA. I loved her in the prequel novellas (LOVED), liked her less in the first book, less in the second… and TBH haven’t felt the need to pick up any of the other ones. (Though that was more because Sarah J. Maas struggles so hard with middles and I couldn’t take 5 more books with struggling middles.)
I also wasn’t a huge fan of Mal. I haven’t read Siege & Storm (the hook on the first one wasn’t enough to convince me) so I can’t say who I am shipping, but Mal just didn’t quite do it. He’s like… a somehow less interesting Peeta??
ME TOOOOO. The first 2 book sand the novellas were my everything. And after Heir of Fire…I don’t even know her??? She did a personality flip and everything I loved about the series is gone. I’m not reading anymore. 🙁
SIEGE AND STORM IS AMAZING THOUGH. I felt “eh” about Shadow and Bone, but omg, bk2 is the most amazing thing in the world. 😂
I agree with a few. I don’t dislike Katniss. (I’m not sure that many people do. Would the series be that popular if everyone hated the main character?) I don’t mind Sam and Grace, either (although it’s been years since I read Shiver and I barely remember it).
I don’t much like Mal (well, I didn’t hate him, but I didn’t love him, either), Celaena (ugh… shallow little princess), or Jeb (control freak!). So I can’t find much to disagree with there… except I’m not sure why you say Ron is a bully. Can you give some examples? I’m racking my brain trying to remember, but in my memories of the series, Ron was just a clueless fumbler. Snape… yeah, he was nasty. I get how he was supposed to be redeemed and all, but geez… he did some awful things along the way. Getting the desired outcome had a really high price.
Well, I don’t think people hated Katniss originally…but I feel like a lot of people like to hate what’s popular? I mean, everyone seems to hate Bella and Twilight is mega-famous! 😛 But whenever I hear Katniss mentioned on blogs these days, it seems to be negative. *sad noises*
OHHHH. Okay for Ron: Like there were just countless scenes where he took things from first years. He was always pushing around the first-years when hew as a prefect. In, I think bk 6, he tossed a kid out of a chair because he wanted to sit in it. That one really stuck out to me because it’s just so rude.
And YUS. I agree Snape did (mostly) what he had to do … and I get that he probably needed to hate Harry to keep up appearances. But he absolutely aBUSED the rest of his class. He was horrible to Hermione too, and just unnecessarily cruel to all children (POOR NEVILLE, MIGHT I ADD) and no one every stopped him and that makes me ridiculously angry. 🙁
I never liked Snape either, he was such a bully and nothing can redeem that!
EXACTLY! A person who bullies children is forever evil. The end. *glares at Snape*
I so have to disagree about Mal, he will forever and always be AMAZING!!! I mean when he was in jail, and didn’t judge her but supported her. I love him so much. He wanted her to be her and not have the power consume and change her. He didn’t want to use her to his own advantage like someone else!!! Just saying!!! The Darkling was an amazing character but he was selfish, and Nikolai just needs his own book, which she keeps telling me will be coming!
That’s okay…YOU CAN HAVE MAL AND I’LL HAVE NIKOLAI AND THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.😂 I don’t really get the Darkling love either, tbh. He was very selfish and he didn’t want Alina for anything but her power, right?
NIKOLAI NEEDS A SERIES YESSSSS.
Polite sarcasm = definitely a thing.
GOOD. BECAUSE IT’S MY FAVORITE KIND.
Cait, I am SO glad you also feel uncomfortable reading about bullies. From personal experience, I absolutely can’t stand characters that are mean to others for no reason at all, which reads, RON WEASLEY. Hahah. I know he’s beloved for a lot of reasons, but I am also a really moody an unforgiving reader.
Katniss, on the other way, makes me feel the opposite. I don’t really like her personality and couldn’t connect with her AT ALL. I do recognize her bravery; I just don’t see her as a heroine.
That post was a lot of fun, though.
AND YES A LOT OF YES FOR SAM AND GRACE. THEY ARE SO ADORABLE! A bit insta-lovey, but a realistic couple that is quite rare in YA nowadays.
YAYYY I’M SO GLAD WE’RE THE SAME ON THIS, LAIS. *hi fives* I think bullies are really discussing. I mean, there is no reason for Ron to be one. He has a loving family and a good life. *fumes and his immaturity*
BUT SAM AND GRACE WEREN’T INSTALOVEY BECAUSE THEY KNEW EACH OTHER WHEN HE…was…a…wolf. Okay.😂 They have problems. I concede.😂
I know that I just love Dylan O’Brien, I was meh to Thomas in the books, then Dylan came along and I was like OMFGG I LOVE THOMAS.
I so totally agree about Mal! I never even seemed like he actually liked Alina for herself, and not just because they had known each other forever so of course they should be a couple. And he spends so much time moping about being not being grisha. Meanwhile Nikolai was kicking butt and taking names with his regular human self. Well… he’s also a prince, but still!
I pressed submit by accident before I was done, oops. I may have gotten overexcited. For my own opposite character opinion a few come to find, but Draco Malfoy pops up. He was whiny and stuck up, but to me he seemed to change and develop more than someone like Ron Weasley who was essentially the same the whole book. At least Malfoy learns something, even though he’s the ‘villain’
Excitement is definitely permitted on my blog. 😉 BECAUSE YA KNOW ME. NEVER EXCITED.😂
Ahem. I agree that Ron didn’t have much development. When he ditched in Bk 7 I just wanted to sTRANGLE HIM. Like he was just so petty and jealous of Harry and it was poisonous and I’m furious.
I LOVED THOMAS FROM THE BEGINNING buuuut it might’ve doubled after the movies.😂
And YUS. Mal was so whiny. Nikolai cared about the WORLD as well as Alina? But Mal just cared about securing himself a Grisha girlfriend. *Growls*
Yes! The abandoning them was just another strike against him, but even before that he was petty and jealous. Like most of the 4th book. At least Malfoy actually seemed consistently loyal to his friends, even if they were mostly his lackeys
I’m so happy someone agrees about Mal being pretty much the worst :p
Hey Sansa gets some love ! I have to admit she wasn’t my favorite (I HATED it when she went to Cersei about her own father) but she was manipulated terribly and treated HORRIBLY past the point of ridiculousness, and yeah she didn’t deserve any of that. And… she has SURVIVED, and now has to put up with Littlefinger’s crap. So… she has some serious badassery coming up I think.
Intersting point about bullies who redeem- I agree, once a bully not sure I’m into that charatcer. Yeah sure maybe they can redeem, but still… not cool. So if they were like that… put they go! LOL.
Omg yes I hated it when she went to Cersei too. But then I also hated that Catelyn sent Jon to the wall because SHE IS PETTY and then started a war, and that Eddard chose stupid “honour” over keeping his own children alive and that Jaime threw Bran out a window and that no one stabbed Joffery in his crib. AHEM. OKAY SORRY TO THE LAST ONE.😂 But basically I hate all the characters at SOME point but still manage to adore the series. 😂 Talented writing, yes?!? (And omg, Sansa is CLEVER to still be alive. She uses “naivety” as a shield…when she is anything but clueless.)
Oh I know. Eddard= dumb! I wish he would have taken Renly up on his offer. I was yelling accept! accept! you fool!!! LOL. But no… not Ned. Sigh. And sometimes I wonder how I can like Jaime so much when he chucked a kid out a window. And Catelyn…not the brightest bulb. And Robb- my mystical wolf keeps FREAKING out at the Freys but I’m going to go in and chow with them. Um, no. We’ll talk out here on the bridge thank you very much. That wedding would have had to be held elsewhere I’m thinking… 🙂
so yeah… everyone is an idiot in this series at some point. Have you seen the new trailer? Looks epic…
I KNOOOOOW, LIKE WHY DIDN’T HE?!?!?!? The books would’ve been so much different if they’d got Renly on the throne.😭 (Not that I liked Renly? But he was better than Stannis? I think?) AND ZOMG I FEEL AWFUL ABOUT ACTUALLY LIKING JAIME. 😂 He’s so bad and yet…idek. I love him and Brienne so much (#shipit)
But zomg, let’s not even talk about Robb. 😂 “I’m sure my magical wolf doesn’t know anything”. ROBB. I CANNOT EVEN. HE SHOULDN’T HAVE EVEN EVER MARRIED THE WRONG GIRL, THE STUPID MELON BRAINED PINECONE HEAD. *rages*
Ahem.
So I may be a little passionate about this series.
AND YES. I have seen the trailer, but I honestly don’t think I’m going to watch the season! I’m a book-first kind of person. 😭
Ooh, Ron annoys me SO MUCH!!! In the PJ books, Luke was always my second favorite book character! And I really like Thomas, as well! (I just finished book 3.) And I’m usually in the unpopular opinion section…
(This is a little unrelated, but “City of Bones” just came in the mail today!)
HOW DO YOU NOT LIKE RON??? I MEAN I UNDERSTAND WHY BUT?!?!?! *cries until drowns in own tears*
OMG I’M GLAD YOU AGREE WITH MY ALYSSA. <3 Clearly your and my opinions are just the greatest.
OMGGGG I LOVE CITY OF BONES!! *flails wildly* I hope you like it. 😀
I’ve seen Celaena on a few dislike lists today. I must say that the whole drama surrounding Queen of Shadows and the love square has put me off reading the Throne of Glass series. Plus when a character does a 360 switch and becomes unrecognizable from the one you initially connected with is always a downer. Character development is expected not a character makeover.
I 100% agree with your comments on Sansa. I will always stand by my statement that Sansa is one of the strongest characters in the series. Her femininity is her strength, it’s what kept her alive in King’s Landing. She definitely would not have survived if she had acted like Arya. Her femininity was like a protective mask for her and because people didn’t see her as a threat it meant that she had insight into the way the game is played and can now apply those tricks to her own benefit.
I honestly don’t want to convince you to read Throne of Glass…😂 BUT YEAH. I’M SORRY! I don’t like spoiling books for other people, but I do have some fierce Celaena-hate there. Gah. My bad. And omg SO TRUE: there’s a difference between “Development” and “make over” for sure and I think that’s what’s ruined the series for me.
YES. SANSA IS STRONG. And plus she is like one of Cersei’s most HATED people…yet she’s still alive?! Can we just applaud that for a moment?! And plus at the beginning she was super naive, but then she was just PLAYING that part of a naive girl and that’s why she’s still alive…THIS IS WHY SHE COULD RULE.
Oh my gosh, yes. Celaena makes me want to throw the book halfway across the room because she is SO INSENSITIVE!!!!! I haven’t even finished heir of fire yet, and I don’t know if I can handle her getting worse. And KATNISS!!! Katniss manages to be kick butt and have emotion at the same time. I want more characters like her.
YOU AND ME BOTH MY FRIEND. And like I get that some of it is her personality? And I was okay with that in the earlier books…but not anymore. If you have no loyalty to your friends, what are you??? NOTHING. 😭
KATNISS LOVE FOREVER. <3
First I absolutely love katniss! Second although characters are awesome I find myself not having opinions on them.
Nabila // Hot Town Cool Girl
OMG GOOD!! ALL THE LOVE TO KATNISS. 😂
SAME WITH MAL AND JEB AND SNAPE. Also Katniss. I love Katniss, she is amazing. Snape was just…ugh. Like, yeah, I guess he got redeemed a bit at the end but he was still a huge bully and an absolutely awful person to just about everybody. -_-
Lovely post!
OMG WE ARE LIKE TWINS IN THIS THEN, EVI. *hi fives* *shares cake with you*
Unpopular opinion lists are so fun to read! I really liked this one. Snape and Ron…yeah, Snape is a jerk and his actions are just so illogical! I don’t think characters need to ignore all their emotions, but it is good to wonder every so often WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? Like IS THIS YOUR WAY OF GETTING PAY BACK ON HIS DEAD FATHER? And while I never hated Ron (and I haven’t finished the series yet), I have never shipped him and Hermione. I thought I was completely alone in this until recent years! Thankfully, the internet introduced me to the multitude of opinions on the subject.
I’ve only read Shadow and Bone, and I felt like Mal was an ok guy, but he was just kind of there. Nothing special really. Oh, except that he was annoying for the first half of the book.
Katniss was realistic. She wasn’t what I expected going into THG, but she was her own consistent character. She is strong-willed and brave, but she isn’t devoid of emotion either! I think she’s (sometimes) wise enough to see where her emotions should not affect the situation. And she was in the freaking Hunger Games! People do not come out of that unscathed. Enough said.
I never connected very well to Thomas. It was as though I was seeing through his eyes, but I wasn’t really in his head. He did cause me a lot of anxiety though. Every single aspect of his life is in danger/dangerous, and even though I didn’t relate to him, I cared about him and didn’t want to see him hurt. (Does that even make sense-to not relate but still care deeply about a person?)
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Lish!!😂 I kind of get nervous doing posts like these?! BUT THINGS MUST BE SAID. HUZZAH. Ahem.
I’m glad you agree about Snape. IT’S SO WRONG HOW HE WAS ALLOWED TO BE CRUEL BECAUSE HE HAD SADNESS OVER SOMETHING. I mean…no. You choose how things rule your life. And ALL of his “reasons” didn’t make sense for him to be an absolute cruel bully to ALL children. *aggressively protects children*
I think Katniss was the perfect representation of PTSD! And I just loved how she was sharp edges and messed up minds because omg something like the Hunger Games WOULD totally screw you up for life.
PEOPLE DON’T LIKE KATNISS? I seriously cannot follow the logic behind that. Honestly, after everything she went through, her reactions are pretty realistic. She’s so traumatized by all that she’s witnessed that, psychologically, it’s just too much for her and she begins to shut down. She’s not unemotional – far from it. I’m actually surprised how some people don’t see that.
And ha…I knew Jeb & Snape were going to be on this list. 😉
Also LUKE. 💔 HE COULD HAVE REDEEMED HIMSELF. POOR BOY.
ME NEITHER. But I see a lot of hate for her these days.😂 Although it’s possibly because the Hunger Games is so famous and people looove to hate famous things. 😂 AHEM. BUT YUS. SHE IS SO REALISTIC and her love for her family and Peeta is just adfjaksldja <33
I WANTED A HAPPY ENDING FOR LUKE. STILL NOT OVER IT.
Oh gosh there’s so much to say! Haha. Basically I also hated Amal. He was horrible and I would have picked even The Darkling over him. He was too whiny. And I’m one of those people tha hates Sansa but could love her depending on what happened next. It’s not the while girly thing that bothers me it’s that she gets into these bad situations and then she stays in them and accepts them. If I were her I’d run very far away. Great post!
Oh heck yes Mal was whiny. He basically WHINED himself through 3 books and I could’ve tossed him off a bridge, tbh.
I feel like Sansa is actually smart to still be ALIVE?? I mean, she was betrothed to Joffery for goodness sakes. SHE IS ON CERSEI’S HIT LIST AND YET SHE’S STILL ALIVE?!?!?? #skills
YES THOMAS/DYLAN O’BRIAN ARE BOTH BAE TO BE HONEST.
I feel like I find myself in characters, not necessarily like relate to them entirely, but I find bits and pieces of who I am in them. ya know???? I didn’t like Katniss (not because of a lack of emotion!!!!!) or Gale or Peeta very much, hahaha. I haven’t read the Hunger Games in a long while actually, so maybe I shouldn’t even put this out there??? (hides under pillow because not sure if there was a problem with the character or if I was just immature and stupid then….) Anywway, your posts always make me happy xD Especially since you surprised me this time by mentioning cake…. SIKE.
PS- I’m on spring break (#URGENT) What is one (or a few… heh) YA series you would recommend that I read??? THANK YOU<33
THOMAS AND DYLAN O’BRIEN ARE JUST ONE AND THE SAME NOW. ALSO STILES WHILE WE’RE AT IT. <3 BASICALLY DYLAN OBRIEN <3 Ahem.
*throws marshmallows at you* HOW DARE YOU NOT LOVE MY DARLING KATNISS. Juuuuust kidding.😂 I'll let you live. #amsokind It's not a series for everyone!
DUDE HAVE YOU READ THE RAVEN CYCLE?! BECAUSE I SHALL SCREAM READ IT UNTIL YOU DO. But then anything by Maggie Stiefvater will do also. *nods* Oh and if you HAVE read them…then I must shriek The Demon King series, because it’s sassy and has thieves and magic and adorable characters and it’s just everything. :’)
No shame about recently finishing up Harry Potter. I’ve only just read the first book last year sometime (or maybe the year before last), and I haven’t really picked it back up despite not thinking it was bad or anything like that.
I agree partly with what you say about Sansa. Though, I can admit that I absolutely hated her during the first book of the series. It didn’t even have anything to do with her wanting to be a princess. I actually liked her that way. However, her complete dismissal of Arya kind of struck a chord with me… as the big sister of an annoying teen (who is the Sansa to my Arya), I was kind of offended. But Sansa’s been growing on me as of late. Of course… I AM only in the second book, so maybe everything will change and I’ll start disliking her once more. Who knows with George anymore?
Omg, I can go stand with you in the corner of we-are-so-late-to-read-this-famous-series.😂 AHEM. I wasn’t enamoured with it like everyone else is? But I wonder if that’s because I read it as an adult so a lot of the magicalness was just a bit…”meh” to me? BUT I STILL DO LIKE IT.
And I do think Sansa was annoyingly petty and brattish…but I think Arya was too. I think Arya gets SO MUCH PRAISE when really she’s actually just rude and violent. Sansa is spoiled and whiny. I mean, all the Stark kids are kind of horrible?!? (Except Jon <333) But they were also really neglected by their parents so IDEK. ANALYSING THEM IS INTERESTING THOUGH.😂
YES. Our corner has free books and whatnot. Yeah, I get that. I wondered if that what it was for me as well considering I often find myself cringing at half of the things I reread that I once fawned over in my youth. Oh well. The time has passed.
Arya is the most petty of all of the Starks right now. I love her to pieces, but that girl gets so annoying. Of course, a part of me is only staking a claim in her because I know she at least will survive the books I have yet to read which is a lot more than I can saw about the other Stark children. Also, it just occurred to me while listening to the second book that I’m literally experiencing a Westeros run by children pretending to be adults, and it put a lot of things into perspective for me. Analyzing the ASOIAF series is so great!
I’m glad you think Arya is a bit petty too. 😂 Actually Arya’s storyline annoys me because I don’t understand WHY she does some of the things she does in later books…ahem. BUT OMG YOU ARE 100% RIGHT ABOUT WHO IS LEADING WESTEROS. -_-
Kings Landing: We need a king…um um GET THE 13 YEAR OLD!
The North: We shall fight them with a king…um um GET THE 15 YEAR OLD!
Me: Stahhhp all of you.
I LOVE Katniss so, so much. On the first read of THE HUNGER GAMES, I disliked her greatly. She just seemed to dull and emotionless and ugh no thanks. But then, a few years later when I reread the books, I absolutely adored her. So I still never thought that she was a reaalllllllly emotional character (save for a few things, like the one you pointed out) but that’s just who she was. She’s tough and brave, and I love her for that.
I’M GLAD YOU CAME TO YOUR SENSES, KARA. <3 I really wish I had time to re-read them. omg. Feels.
I was not a fan of Hermione ending up with Ron either. My problem is that he was, as you say, an incredibly childish character throughout the series, even when he should’ve been growing up. I ship her with Viktor, to be honest. I think that relationship could’d had a lot of development and possibility.
Luna is one of my favorite characters in the series, but I wouldn’t have put her with Harry. Harry’s kind of an annoying tosspot and he’s really lucky with a lot of things that he really shouldn’t get credit for. I didn’t realize this until recently, but him being able to save Sirius and Buckbeak in Prisoner of Azkaban totally comes down to Hermione being a hardworker/overachiever because without her and her Time Turner, NOBODY would’ve been save in that book!
I went with a Twilight theme for my post this week. So many people dislike that series and I still like it, even if it’s not as much like as it was when I first read the books. I went with which Twilight characters I liked best (oddly enough, neither Bella nor Edward made the list). ;P My TTT: http://tinyurl.com/z6ufsft.
It’s nice that Ron DID develop…but he was so petty all the time, it was just hard to handle when so much bigger things were at stake. GET OVER YOURSELF, RON. AGH. I really like Harry though.😂 I think he and Luna could’ve been adorable…buuuut, I kind of do ship her with Neville as well. <3
I actually don't hate Twilight! It's not my favourite, but I don't understand why it gets so much hate!
I did like in the movies how Luna and Neville get a little nod to a possible ship in film 8. 🙂
Ohhh did they?!? I haven’t watched any of the movies yet. I KNOW. SHAME ON ME. But I will, eventually!! hehe.
SAM AND GRACE, YAS. I am a major Isabel/Cole shipper, but I totally agree with you that SAM AND GRACE WOULD LAST. They are real and sweet and so cuuuuuute!
ALSO, LUKE SON OF HERMES. I feel the same feels.
SAM AND GRACE ARE DESTINED FOR 4 CHILDREN AND A NICE HOUSE IN THE WOODS AND A HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND I NEED TO BE SO HAPPY BECAUSE YES. :’)
AHHHHHHHH, I HAVE SO MUCH HATE FOR SNAPE TOO AND EVERYONE LOVES HIM AND IT DRIVES ME INSANE! *explodes with rage* He’s such a tosser and just… ugh. I don’t understand how people were able to forgive him. But Ron… I, uh, might have a phenomenally ginormous love for Ron. Like a lot, a lot of love for him so I’ll just skip over that… *awkwardly shuffles off*
I thoroughly agree that Luke is underrated. He’s honestly the only thing that got me through that series. And can we take a moment to appreciate all that is Jake Abel? My God, he’s is one solid specimen. Have you seen him in The Host? If not, you must. For your own good. He’s the most gorgeous souled human in that movie.
And I loved, loved, loved Katniss in the first two books. She’s was so strong and amazing, but holy shivers how much I utterly despise that book that called Mockingjay and what they did to Katniss in it. They ruined her character so damn much – reduce to her to a snivelling, whinefest. It drove me insane!
SAM. SAM. SAM. SAM! <3 Do you need me to state my love for Shiver any more? I love that series so damn much, and I don't see why they all hate Sam and Grace so much. They're GORGEOUS. He makes paper cranes for goodness sakes! <3
HATE SNAPE WITH ME, RACHEL. WE SHALL HAVE A HATE SNAPE PARTY AND WEAR HATE SNAPE JACKETS. Ahem. He abused children, ALL CHILDREN, and he had no excuse for that except he is a disgusting man. And I’m also angry that Dumbledore let him. Like how DARE anyone think that it’s okay to bully children because you’re hurting? It is not. Ever. *protects all the first years aggressively*
YES. JAKE ABEL. LET’S APPRECIATE HIM. I haven’t seen him in the host! But he’s in Supernatural for a bit and adjfkaldsfj.
I’ll have to agree to disagree about Mockingjay.😂 I thought Katniss was perfect.
YES, YES AND YESS! *throws confetti and joins the party with gusto* I was half-half about Dumbledore as a character too. The more I reflect on him, the less respect I have for him but I have NO idea why he allowed Snape to stay at school. Well, okay. Yeah, I know why – the whole double-agent thing. But he was abusive. Neville’s biggest fear, in the entire world was Snape. How can you possibly employ a teacher that terrifies his students so much? Just GAHHHH! What were you thinking Dumbledore!?!?!
WATCH IT! He’s glorious! And oh, actually? Damn, I’ll have to find those episodes!
Ooops? *sheepish grin* I thought you thought the same… so yes, let’s agree to disagree.
I have never thought Ron and Hermione was a good idea, she’s too damn smart for him. And this is coming from someone who likes Ron.
YAY I’M NOT ALONE IN NOT LIKING THIS SHIP.😂 I think Hermoine needed someone to keep up with her not someone she’d have to spend her whole life waiting 39839 years for them to catch up.
Ok, so I’m just going to move past the Ron & Snape one because otherwise I will be talking to you in ANGRY CAPITALS for a very long time! (How could you?!!!!!)
I really liked Katniss too, how people think she has no emotions, have they not read the last book?! She is basically a gigantic mess of emotions in that book!
How can people not like Thomas? I loved Thomas!
Also, kind of a cheat (as I haven’t actually read the books yet, just watched the series) but I really like Sansa! As you said, she has grown up a hell of a lot and isn’t the same girl who drooled over Joffrey.
WATCH ME DISLIKE THEM IMMENSELY. MWAHAAHHHAA. *ahem*
I don’t even KNOW how people can misunderstand Katniss?! But I see it everywhere it and it BOGGLES me. Katniss. <3 Thomas. <3 SANSA. <3
Cait? Cake? Those things are like I could never associate them together ever at all. (haha nope) It’s been a while since I read the Hunger Games, or Percy Jackson, and I read Shiver a few months ago but it feels like ages? And I read throne of glass but I haven’t got around to finishing the series. About Harry Potter- Ron is human! He’s an idiot, but he tries to do the right thing, and in the end it works out. A lot of people don’t ship him and Hermione- but I so, so, so, do. Remember the part when he thinks about the house elves??? <3 <3 And Snape was horrible to Harry, but the last book totally twisted the way I saw him. He was amamamamazing and awwwww!! I loved that plot twist so much (although I don't really ship snily. Or Jilly- is that a thing?) I didn't like clary, or Jace, or the mortal instrument books. Nor did I like Luke- although I don't think he was pure evil. Just very bent on revenge and such. So, if you're wondering, YES YOUR OPINIONS ARE WRONG (just kidding… it's good to know that there are people who think differently to me out there. A zillion mes would be terrifying)
I neeeeever talk about cake. NEVER. IT’S SO SURPRISING WHEN I OFF-HANDEDLY MENTION IT, LET’S BE REAL. Ahem.
I’m glad you enjoy the Ron/Hermione ship.😂 I shall keep non-shipping them, but I know I’m a minority! 😛 Snape wasn’t just horrible to Harry though…he was horrible to ALL the children. He abused them. HE DID. And Dumbledore just let him…Idek. I’m disgusted by it, tbh? But I’m willing to agree to disagree.😂 *gives you cake*
I love Celaena, but then again… I’m only going to get started on Crown of Midnight later today (HOPEFULLY!!) so my heart isn’t broken yet. I get what you’re saying about Snape and Ron. I never really liked either of them. Plus, Harry and Ginny = blah, and Harry and Luna would make SO MUCH more sense.
I do like Thomas from the Maze Runner and Katniss. I don’t understand why so many ppl hate on them.
OOH HAVE FUN WITH CROWN OF MIDNIGHT. Enjoy the cliffhanger. 😉 And I soooo do not ship Harry and Ginny either. Like. WHY?!?! Where was the romance there?!
I agree with you on Sansa. Well, at first I thought she was pretty annoying, but like you said she grows so much over the series. Also you just can’t go wrong with Sam and Grace! I never thought of putting Katniss and Thomas together, but they probably would get along famously. Honestly I’m not sure if I would like Thomas as much if Dylan O’Brien wasn’t playing him either.
I do think Sansa IS a bit annoying!! But like in a childish way?! Just spoiled-child-annoying. BUT THEN SO IS ARYA. So are ALL THE STARK KIDS TBH. I wanted to smack Bran for how rude he was to the servants, omg. Ahem. But they were pretty neglected by their parents, so I kinda understand…
I would still like Thomas, BUT DYLAN O’BRIEN MAKES IT 1000% BETTER.
YES to Celaena and YES to Mal being an inarticulate bumble and YES YES YES to Luke being a squishy and not knowing whether you like Thomas or Dylan O’Brien is being a cutie. I’m also pretty sure my love for Luke is about 80% to blame on Jake Abel.
I’M SURE MY LOVE OF LUKE IS LIKE 98% TO BLAME ON JAKE ABEL. #sorrynotsorry Ahem.
Oppsss we have different opinions here dear dragoness!!
So, I’m still reading Shadow Queen and yes… I still love Celaena but whatever decisions she is making… sigh…. plus I’m shipping her with Chaol and I don’t care…but but but in this book, Chaol is just… nothing! So I haven’t finished this books yet…. and confession. Is it just me, but don’t you think of Roan as an uncle?! And I think there is no mention of cake in this book.
Grace is grouped in the characters that I did not like because she has this weird fixation about the wold.. it’s creepy IMHO I also DNF’d the book.
Ron is my absolute favorite! But yeah, I do see your point. Esp in Deathly Hallow but I believe that had to happen for him to grow up. He is still my favorite anyway. And I ship him and Hermione! Yay! What I do not ship is Harry and Ginny… I mean what?! I don’t understand this!
I added Etienne (Anna and the French Kiss), Edward & Bella to characters that I just don’t get… urgh!!
I can’t beeeelieve Chaol and Dorian have basically been DUMPED from the series.😭 It KILLS ME IT DOES. They are wonderful characters but I feel like Aedion/Rowan have suddenly just appeared and replaced them and I’M NOT AOKY WITH THIS. I also thought Rowan was like her cousin. But apparently not????
I’m glad Ron did mature a little though. 😉 I DO NOT SHIP HARRY/GINNY EITHER. Where was the connection? Where was the chemistry? WHAT DID I MISS?
(Etienne seriously needed to grow up too. ARGH.)
So I just finished Queen of Shadows and although I LOVE the book as a whole, I am not happy about who Aelin ended up with! I just don’t get it. Don’t like the way the romance arc is going!
YES! I really thought Rowan was her UNCLE! Or something! Eeeeeek!
Sooooo… I’m just reading my above comment and I swear I typed it correctly the first time… stupid phone, tiny keys, big fingers.. #facepalm
Oh my goodness Cait. You mentioned cake! What is this strange, rare occurrence? I am in shock!
Yes to Luke, Son of Hermes! He was an adorable little evil cupcake and I loved him in all the books he was in. (Also, shhh, I’m still pretending the movies don’t exist. I understand movie adaptations can’t be the same. I really do. But that one…it doesn’t exist is all I’m saying.) And….I actually haven’t read ANY of the other books. *hides*
I KNOW, RIGHT?! It’s so odd when I talk about cake….
Ahem.
YAY FOR THE LUKE LOVE! I just wanted good things for him. #stillnotokay I secretly wish they’d redo the movies but like in animation? Also with the creators of How to Train Your Dragon. #dreams
Katniss, how I love thee. Anyway. Thomas.. I don’t know how I felt about him. I went back and forth. I don’t know how I feel about movie Thomas yet either, I need to see The Scorch Trials.
Now, I DO love Mal- but I think most people don’t? So you might be in the majority there too. I haven’t read Queen of Shadows yet because of all the spoilers and mixed reviews, and the fact that I use it to kill large rodents (okay, so not that last thing), but I go back and forth with her too. And those are the only ones I have read!
So I shall answer your question, which is HARD because I couldn’t even come up with my own list haha. I love… OH! Julian from the Delirium series! Like, three people shipped him with Lena. And I am one of them. Now, dislike… I do not like… okay I am bad at disliking? The only one I can think of that I don’t like but other people DO like is Adam from The Raven Boys. But I haven’t gotten to the next books yet so it’s early, maybe I WILL like him? Idk, he pissed me off in that book.
I knew you would approve of the Katniss love in this post. ;D KNEW IT. Ahem. And that’s fine…I can love Thomas enough for the universe aaaaall on my own. THOMAS. <3
I am discovering that I'm not a minority for a lot of these. 😂 It's very enlightening and kind of hysterical. AHHHEM. I should've put the Darkling on here; I don't like him! That would've got the fangirls screeching.
I NEVER READ DELIRIUM. OMG I AM A BAD BOOKWORM. (It's on the to-do list....like with 39839 other books?)
And duuuuude, me too with Adam. Like I understand him, but I hate his actions and how he treats his friends.
YES. Someone else who absolutely hates Mal. He literally aggravated me SO much. Like why was he even the love interest?? ((The Darkling is so much better <3)) But seriously I felt like Mal's character was so flat, boring, unrealistic, and JUST ANNOYING. Gahh.
Also Celaena. I absolutely loved her in ToG & CoM but then HoF came and I'm just like UGH. What happened to her?? Like, can we please go back to the good old days where it was just Celaena, Dorian, and Chaol? THAT WAS THE BEST. ((Speaking of, I also absolutely loathe Rowan — I'm not even gonna get into all that because I can go on and on for hours about how much I dislike him)). But yes, these are my feelings having just read HoF. Honestly I'm debating whether or not I should pick up QoS…
Great post (as usual!) <3
HHAHA. OMG YES TO MAL BEING A PAIN. Like he literally whined his way through 3 books? *stuffs a sock in his mouth*
AND SAME WITH ME AND CELAENA. ToG and CoM were two of the best books I’ve ever read, but…what was with the personality flip? That’s not development. That’s writing a NEW character and I don’t even know why.😭😭 I HATE ROWAN TOO. I can’t even understand why the author would dump Chaol/Dorian from the story and go with Rowan and Aedion.😭 THEY ARE BOTH BORING AND STUPID. I HATED HEIR OF FIRE AND QUEEN OF SHADOWS TBH.😭😭 (hehe, sorry for the passionate rant here.😂)
I’m seeing more and more people begin to say that they dislike Ron and it’s refreshing. I never got the hype of him once I started reading the books a few years ago. I thought he was absolutely cruel and didn’t even care that he walked all over people with words because he was the lesser brother. His excuses were just… UGH. DID YOU JUST SAY TEAM NIKOLAI!? YAS! I read the last two books in the trilogy hoping she would marry him and become a boss ass princess who would knock people out if they double crossed her. Mal was just so boring, but by the end of the series I guess that’s what Alina needed someone boring. She had enough adventure. I appreciate Sansa’s femininity, but I just absolutely hate her. Granted I’ve only read the first two books, but I still can’t stand her. She’s just not a character I enjoy, but maybe with more development I’ll grow fond of her. I love Katniss and I believe she is a true warrior. Thomas on the other hand, I never connected to and I just didn’t care all that much about his arc in The Maze Runner. I believe that was due to the writing and just my lack of interest. Dylan O’Brien is always a plus and that is the best way to market a character. I think people dislike Sam & Grace because it’s easy to simple love stories that rely solely on being cute. I personally think that’s why I loved Shiver so much because it was so simple and just sweet. There needs to be more romances like that because it’s realistic.
AHHH RON-DISLIKERS UNITE!😂 I just…I agree. He has no reason except the “aw I’m a sad poor younger child who nobody loves”. It’s absolutely rubbish. Harry was abused as a child and he never mindlessly bullied other kids. I just got into such a rage when, in one of the later books, Ron is a PREFECT and he just is mean to the little kids because he can be. HOW IS HE EVEN BETTER THAN DRACO? HE’S NOT.
YES YOU AND ME BOTH ABOUT THE LAST TWO GRISHA BOOKS. *sobs* But I guess this leaves me to ship Nikolai with myself?
I think there IS more to Sam and Grace than the just being cute though? I mean, that’s one of my biggest reasons for loving them😂 But he was horribly abused as a child and she was neglected and gahhh, I just love how FINALLY they both find someone to love them unconditionally for who they are AND IT MAKES MY HEART BLEED HAPPINESS.
YES, YES, YES. I really really disliked Snape, and I wasn’t a huge fan of Ron either. And I wanted to stab Mal in the eye with a spork. But I LOVE Katniss and Sansa, and I agree, Luke was the best part of the Percy Jackson movies. He’s basically the only reason I rematch them from time to time, tbh. And I love Thomas. *hugs characters* I get really frustrated with people who don’t understand Katniss’ character. Like, everyone expects her to be easy to understand and relate to, but she’s suffered so much, naturally she isn’t going to show her emotions all the time. And she’s not going to show her emotions in healthy ways when she does let them out. And why don’t people give her a break?
Needless to say, I love this post. *nods*
I think for my unpopular character opinions, I would say I really loved Ruby from Imaginary Girls. Pretty much everyone else whose reviews I read said they hated her and that she was awful, and I get that she wasn’t a wonderful person. But she also…was a wonderful person, if that makes sense. And she is one of my favorite characters of ever. I also really disliked Gale from The Hunger Games because he wasn’t understanding of Katniss /at all/ and he put so much pressure on her to be in love with him even though she’d been through so much trauma. So yeah, I can’t think of any more characters at the moment, but I know there are others. 😛
I never understood why Harry married Ginny. It should have been Harry and Luna, Hermoine and Krum and Ron turned into a pygmy puff or a house elf. That would have been fun to read.
YES YES YES. I DESPISE MAL. I QUESTION EVERYTHING ABOUT THE DUDE AND SOMETIMES WANT TO STRANGLE SOMETHING (specifically him) WHEN THINKING OF HIM. *releases breath* okay, i’m calm. i’m calm. from the moment he started flirting with the girl in the FIRST CHAPTER, i was like NOPE. no matter what he does to redeem himself (which was nothing), i will always be a little (maybe a lot) annoyed and salty towards him. YAY FOR UNPOPULAR OPINIONS!
YES YES SEE EXACTLY??!?! HE ONLY WANTED ALINA WHEN HE REALISED SHE WAS WANTABLE. (Wantable is totally a word. *nods*) And he just got soooo whiny the more important/famous Alina became. Seriously. Dude. No more.😂 I’m glad you liked my unpopular opinions. 😉
I’m in the same boat with Celaena…Queen of Shadows really killed it for me, I’m hoping the next book might bring back some love /sigh.
Haha. Poor Mal. I liked him, though I also do quite adorde Nikolai. He’s just so gosh-darn charming.
I like Katniss! She’s got emotion. She’s definitely got lots of reasons to have a ton of emotion, but also to hide some of that.
Great list, Cait!
At least you’re reading the next book!😂 I QUIT. hehe. I mean, maybe I will if the reviews come in favourably, but mostly I’m done.😂
Eeeep, Nikolai was just SO HILARIOUS. <3 I loved him too much and I guess Mal paled in comparison for me?!
I COMPLETELY agree about Sansa Stark! I didn’t really like her in the first book, but now she’s my favorite character. After being very unimpressed by A Dance With Dragons, 90% of the reason I want to read The Winds of Winter is to see Sansa be happy. Hopefully.
My biggest unpopular opinion about a character is that I LOVE Adam from the If I Stay duology (ESPECIALLY in Where She Went). Yeah, he makes a bunch of bad decisions, but he’s doing his best for someone who barely seems in control of his life and he also just seems so REAL.
OMG SANSA BE HAPPY!? WHAT DREAM IS THIS.😭😂 hehe but I definitely agree! I want good things to happen to her…she’s really smart, and she hides behind being naivety…which is really smart. :O I’d love to see her DO SOME AWESOME and possibly get Winterfell back in her own right? Ahem.
DUDE I LOVE ADAM TOOOOOOOO. <3
Okay, I immediately agree on Snape. because basically his entitlement and hate and immaturity as a teacher is just disgusting and he didn’t redeem himself. Ron… I don’t think I’ve ever heard your argument so I don’t know about whether or not I agree, but he never struck me as much of a bully as Harry was in the first place sooooo.
Mal? Hm. I mean, I always thought he was okay but you do make some valid points. I thought they were pretty cute in the very end, but even so, I always thought that Nikolai was worse kind of for the same reasons. XD Just with prince instead of childhood friend.
I KNOW. WHY DON’T MORE PEOPLE LIKE SANSA? I mean, she was kind of easy to dislike when she wanted to marry Joffrey and have his babies because that was just like “what an idiot” but after she figured it out… she like has a kind of strength to her that people should respect more. And being feminine isn’t bad or not badass. So. Agreed.
Also, I think I would agree with you more about Luke now that I’m older, but I am reluctant to reread PJO as a grown up just because of how disappointing Rick Riordan has been for me of late. So like I might agree but I’m not about to find out in a hurry, lol. (As a child, though, I totally disliked him because he was such a traitor. Ah, childhood.)
Omg I’m so relieved I’m not alone in my Snape hate. Like I GET IT…why he di da lot of the things he did? And sure maybe he did need to hate Harry (I mean I think he DID hate Harry anyway?) and be horrible to him…but Snape was downright abusive to the students. As an adult reading the series it made me even hate Dumbledore a little for letting 12-year-olds be psychologically abused by a teacher. *rants wildly*
WELL. There were several instances of Ron-as-a-Prefect where he exerted his “authority” for no reason than to feel powerful. And it was never even addressed by anyone. 🙁
YES OMG I KNOW RIGHT!? SANSA HAS MATURED SO MUCH!!! And yes she WAS an idiot, but she was like 13 and who is really intelligent at 13 now, honestly? Plus Arya seems to get all the praise but she honestly was pretty much an idiot too at times. *Sighs* BUT THEN EVERYONE IS. PARTICULARLY EDDARD, DARN HIM AND HIS STUPID HONOUR.
Ahh, unpopular opinions are always fun to read because we’re so diverse in the characters that we like and dislike! I wasn’t a big fan of Echo either, she was just rude and I didn’t like her. My heart breaks on your thoughts for Celaena, but I do understand, I do! I feel like she has the weight of her world on her shoulders, and now she has to take so many things into account for the good of the people. Wow, Ron and Snape is definitely a big confession! Thanks for sharing Cait 🙂
Unpopular opinion posts ARE fun to read…😂 And it’s nice to let off a little steam now and then, hehee. AHEM.
I was a fan of Celaena, so I’m really disappointed that I now don’t like her too. *sad face* People are more important than things though, to me that’ll always be the biggest thing I want a book to acknowledge. *shrugs*
OMG BUT HEHE. I’M GLAD I DIDN’t GET BURNT ALIVE FOR THE RON/SNAPE ONE. 😛 😂
I totally agree with you RE Snape, Ron and Sansa! IDK the others well enough to comment but yes to those
Ooh yay!!! I’m glad I’m not alone in all my weird slightly unusual opinions today.😂
FINALLY.
For so long I felt like the only one who didn’t like Snape. Did I feel bad for him sometimes? Sure (!) but did I love him? No way! He’s mean and cruel and horrible (those are synonyms – I know but I’m using them for EMPHASIS. OKAY?) to Harry.
And LUKE. I adore Luke. Always have, always will. He’s like…everything (especially in the movies) and “get off my roof” best line in the movie besides “but you were some weird hybrid, man-goat THING”
I also didn’t like Dimitri in Vampire Academy (I know you have no interest in reading this series) but almost EVERYONE loves Dimitri and I don’t. I despise him. Dare I say it, I HATE him. He’s just – I can’t even explain my feelings.
WE ARE TWINS IN THIS, CLEARLY, KAT. *hi fives* Also a million apologies for you being sent to spam. I don’t know what WordPress’s problem is. sheesh. *Glares at internet* ANYWAY. We can mutually loathe Snape quite well together.😂
THE GET OFF MY ROOF LINE IS EVERYTHING THOUGH. I so badly wanted him to have a good ending. <3 LUUUUUKE.
Mal. Thank you, I couldn’t stand him either. He frustrated the heck out of me and I never thought he had great chemistry with Alina. And at times I dislike Celaena a TON. She’s definitely lost my interest as the books have progressed. And I do like Sansa, too. I haven’t read the books but I watch the show, and I admit that while I thought Sansa was a brat at first, she’s gone through hell and back and has become a fighter and a survivor, and smart one at that.
YAYY MALLORY! WE ARE LIKE TWINS IN SO MANY OF THESE THEN! Eeep. 🙂 Sansa is definitely a brat at times, but I think it’s unfair how Arya is pitched as the “strong wonderful Stark girl” when she is just as much a brat…probably even more stupid at times. GAH. But then the entire cast of Game of Thrones is rather horrible.😂 BUT WE STILL LOVE THEM. (There’s something wrong with us probably…😂)
KATNISS AND SANSA. I used to hate Sansa because I thought she was niave. Which, I guess, is understandable because she was young. But all the Stark children are young and had a tougher backbone than her. Then I read the book. And that definitely opened my eyes a bit more to her character and now I love her! She’s gone through a hell of a lot and is trying to survive in a place that will kill her for 1 wrong word. So, yeah, she’s timid, but has good reason to be.
Also, for Katniss – she annoys me. And it doesn’t help that I’m not a huge fan of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss because now I have to see it on the big screen and just cringe at how much she makes that STUPID CRY FACE. ugh.
Ohh and do you think possibly having Lady die had something to do with the reason Sansa seemed to be the “weakest” of the Starks?! And I mean, she does start off really whiny/annoying, but SHE IS ONLY LIKE 13. 😂 I just wonder if the reason she’s not so spunky is because of Lady…
YES! I’m so happy, someone else who doesn’t like Ron!! Yay, yay, yay! I just finished up the books last year myself, and I just don’t get the Ron appeal… did I miss something?! I don’t like Ron and Hermione together, either. (*cough*… I do ship Dramione, though, so I guess I like the evil ones?!) Even Harry being with Hermione would have worked better in my mind.
And you’ve summed up exactly why I HATE both Celaena and Jeb! I used to consider Celaena one of my favourite characters, but after some sort of impostor took over in Queen of Shadows, I really can’t stand her. I kinda hope she dies. Painfully. As for Jeb… I was kind of meh-to-dislike toward him in the first book, bu oh my goodness I had so much HATE for him in Unhinged and Ensnared. #TeamMorpheus fovever!!
Oh, and everything you said about Katniss? PERFECTION! I LOVE her so much, and for all the reasons you mentioned. (I remembering writing a post a year or so ago, and I ranked Celaena above Katniss in my favourite characters list. I have SO MANY REGRETS RIGHT NOW!)
Omg and I’M SO glad I’m not the only one late to the Harry Potter party. 😂 Ron and Hermione just…I mean, what even was the chemistry? They spent like 80% of every book not talking to each other. That’s not a good thing to build a MARRIAGE off, omg.
AHHH I’M REALLY GLAD I’M NOT ALONE ABOUT CELAENA ALSO.😂 Basically we’re twins today, Alma. <3 I basically have quit on the Throne of Glass series permanently now. I don't know what's happening to the characters, but it is NOT what the book originally said it was going to do. Ahem.
I 100% AGREE WITH YOU ON CELAENA. she used to be amazing! cared for friends and family (sam dorian chaol nehemia etc) but now all she cares about is ROWAN. i dislike him just as much as i dislike celaena, because both of them need to quit paying so much attention to each other and more on other important people (again, dorian chaol aedion lysandra nesryn manon etc)
also, mal was meh for me, i didn’t like him but i didn’t hate him. i REALLLYYY wanted alina and nikolai to end up together! #teamnikolai he was my favorite character of the series!
ARGHGH IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY HOW CELAENA HAS JUST CHANGED SO STUPIDLY MUCH. And I HATE how Dorian/Chaol have basically been wiped out of the story in favour of Rowan/Aedion who are boring and not even complex characters. So. freaking. frustrated.
YAY!!! I am a Sansa fan too. I didn’t like her at first, mostly for how young, immature and naive she was. But she was a child, and acts how most children would act. She has had immense character growth, which I always applaud. Plus she is smart, and politically minded. She knew how to keep herself alive.
YES!!!! I hate that people say Katnis is unfeeling or doesn’t love. She loves so much. She cares so much. People who say she didn’t really love Peeta are obviously not reading the same book that I was. I think it was more a case of not being able to admit her own feelings to herself, because she had far more important things to worry about than her love life.
Oh dear, I love Ron! He’s like my bookish husband. I feel it helps that I can’t separate book Ron from Rupert Grint movie Ron – he just played him so perfectly.
Yup, I struggle to like Celaena any more. I hated every single decision she made during Queen of Shadows. I couldn’t stand how she treated Dorian and Chaol. I hope she becomes less of a heartless bitch in the next two books, but I doubt it.
Basically ALL the Stark children are SUPER immature…but also young, so I guess we have to remember that. 😂 And YUS. I love how Sansa went from thinking the world was rainbows to actually they are going to kill her but she uses her “naivety” as like a shield? Clever. #SansaForQueen
PEOPLE WHO DON’T LIKE THE HUNGER GAMES ARE READING IT WRONG. < --- My truest suspicious I'm very veeery curious to know what you'll think of the next ToG book! 😀 Are you reading it? I quit. 😂 But I will read people's reviews hehe.
YAS. YASSSSS. I agree with you on the Mal and Jeb part. They were both annoying, and acted like they owned the girl, just cos they’re childhood friends with her. It’s like as if she cannot meet anyone new? *inserts angry emoji here*
BUT HAHAHAHAHA THE REST IS (scary), you girl, have a whole lot of emotions and I like that. 😀
I admit to not having read any of these books, so I cannot express opinions about them. But I do agree that it’s dreadful for disliking characters because they want to be feminine. Probably because I’m trying to be balanced in that and don’t want people disliking my characters for that reason.
Omg I’m glad you agree with me on that one! I feel like the whole “strong heroine” thing has been horribly misunderstood with people thinking that “strong” has to mean punching-people-in-the-face. D: Not that there’s anything wrong with that kind of strong? But I hate it when feminine girls get dismissed as silly or weak for no reason.
Okay, so I wasn’t going to comment at first because 1) it’s an old post, I don’t want to waste your time and 2) I didn’t know half the characters *hides face*
But then Thomas was in the latter category. WHAT?! Are you telling me that most people don’t like Thomas!? Why ever not? Thomas is the most epic of protagonists ever, He’s smart, he thinks, sure he’s not as strong as the others, but he’s really relatable. I mean, you’re reading his thoughts, so when you read about how he wants to curl up in a ball and cry right now that doesn’t mean he actually does. And under his circumstances, um, yeah I’d want to curl up and cry too. Anybody would. He’s also super loyal. I mean, think. I haven’t read The Death Cure (I’m a little scared; a certain character’s death has been spoiled *glares at the internet*). The point is everyone should love Thomas (and mayhap O’Brien, but that is only slightly relevant).
I agree hands down about Katniss too. And Jeb irks me soooo much. He might look cute, but what was his purpose? Why was she even friends with that dude?
Omg comments NEVER waste my time!! I APPRECIATE YOU TAKING THE TIME TO COMMENT, I TRULY DO OMG. *sends you cake*
But yes, honestly…the only things I see about Thomas online seem to be complaints that he’s a Gary-Stu. AND I DON’T GET IT?!? He was complex and dimensional! (I also was spoiled for that certain death in The Death Cure *howls* SOMETIMES THE INTERNET IS HORRIBLE.) Ahem. But TDC is still amazing and you muuuuust read it. Also Dylan O’Brien. <3 Ahem.
JEB NEEDED A HI FIVE IN THE FACE WITH A CHAIR.
ahhhh, Mal. Your points are not invalid but I still love Mal. Not at all in the beginning of Shadow and Bone and not much in the middle but he comes around in the end for me. And I like him an awful lot in Ruin and Rising. I also love Nikolai but I never loved him with Alina. *They* were less interesting to me than *he* was.
Thomas I like. Sansa sounds like I would like her the best.
Celeana I have never really liked as much as other people (which is to say not really at all). In part because her name is so difficult and awkward.
Well I’m glad you liked Mal. You can have him and I shall have Nikolai.😂 THOMAS IS THE MOST AMAZING LITTLE TRAGIC POPPET OF CONFUSION. I love how he spends half the books going “HuH?” because, honestly, if I was dumped into a dystopian world, that’d be my reaction too *nods*
Haha I totally feel you on Thomas. I definitely love Dylan O’Brien and his portrayal of Thomas, but would I love Thomas if it weren’t for Dylan? I honestly don’t know. And don’t worry, a big part of the Harry Potter fandom also despises Snape (including me). Oh oh and I totally feel you (I hope I’m not making you uncomfortable with all the feeling 😂) on Celaena. I’m no longer a fan of hers either.
