It is high time I gave you a tour of my natural habitat.
I call it my “evil lair” because of being a nefarious dark overlord of all, obviously. But the unfortunate fact is my room is also an explosion of colour and rainbow arrays. This is obviously to throw people off. Keep my dark identity a secret. Ensure that when my enemies come, they will get confused by my shiny pretty collections and leave in bewilderment so I can smite them all later very efficiently.
It’s not because I am secretly a colourful piece of shiny dragonish sparkle.
I am not.
I am fierce.
So while you’re keeping that in mind, WELCOME TO MY ROOM. I do such a scant amount of life posts anyway, so this shall be a fun and wild rabbit trail from my usual shouting-about-books schedule. Although I’m still going to be shouting about books here because, spoiler: my room is one big book.
Now my room is entirely my favourite place on this earth.
This is for many reasons including:
- IT’S MIIIIINE ALL MINE AND I DO WHAT I WANT.
- I spend a lot of time in my room because I work from home so it’s like my tiny house, my office, my workspace, my relax space, and my hobbit hole all in one.
- As I might have mentioned, I have severe social anxiety amongst other things, * so my room is also my safe space.
- It’s full of books so why else wouldn’t I love it.
- And I also write all the books of ever here so basically words. Words everywhere. Eventually (WHEN I’M A FAMOUS PUBLISHED AUTHOR) this will be my career space.
- But it’s unfortunately devoid of food??? So I do have to exit it on occasion.
* Which is why I work from home and hopefully will eventually make a career out of writing to fully support myself so dON’T assume my life is all pineapple pie with hoooours to simply read and write. I show you my hAPPY SELF as is my right and preference. Effie Trinket would be proud.
Right so here is where you walk in.
Basically you enter my room and — BOOM THERE’S A BOOKSHELF AND A CELLO. Two incredible things. The cello is in a dire state of disuse due to me realising that preforming made me want to fling myself into the void of space and be eaten by whatever monsters lurk in Illuminae, basically. I would like to keep practising. But. Time. Where is it. Why have I none.
If you close my bedroom door you get to see the glorious mind-map that is one of my many fantasy novels. They just look better in spiderweb array, okay???? I want to be Sherlock when I grow up.
I’ll get there. Give me time.
Now if you’ll all just turn companionably to the left, you’ll see my PRIDE AND JOY AND ONE TRUE LOVE OF MY LIFE.
In rainbow order. Obviously.
I have people ask me “how can you even find anything???” to which I just stare at them blankly because I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE EVERY BOOK IS. All these shelves are double stacked too, by the way, and I know what’s behind them without looking. I can’t remember if my niece is named Jupiter or Juniper * but I 100% know where to find Fire & Flood or Roseblood or More Than This.
bOOm.
Although, the shelfie photos I put on instagram do lie. Because…erm, okay fine…just look up?
* True story bro. It’s…it’s not a proud moment.
I don’t have enough shelves.
But who does?
I was trying to get those stacks to reach to the ceiling but then I started to ask myself “Cait. Do you want to DIE BY BOOKS???” and the answer was no, so I’m being a little less ambitious with how tall I stack them.
Right! Now if you look straight ahead…
MY GLORIOUS BEAUTIFUL DESK!
Okay. #Lies. This desk was my little sister’s. I stole it from her due to her leaving home for uni (to study flute; the nerd) and I scampered through her room and stole things. Like this desk. Also see those two tall thin bookshelves next to it? Also hers.
THANKS, SMOL SISTER!! I LIKE YOUR STUFF!!
Anyway, this is the first time I’ve ever had a desk that hasn’t been recycled through 4 other siblings first. Like wooo! Only second hand!! I’ve moved up in the world!!!
#ActualGoals: own a new desk someday all mine own.
Since my new acquisition of this desk, I actually spend a lot of time typing at it instead of on my bed!! Look at me being and adult or something!!
All the books in the desk-shelf are…erm…my TBR. Don’t judge me. In February last year I won 29 books so that didn’t help matters. Then there’s library sales — WHICH I AM TRASH FOR. If a book is 50 cents you better believe I need to adopt it.
The skinny bookshelves are like 98% hardcovers so basically I’M SO HAPPY I COULD CRY. Two years ago I never bought a single book for myself. Then I got hired to do freelance book reviews and paid in vouchers…and my life began. #MomentOfHappyScreeching
My parental feeds my #bookstagram fake flower addiction with super cheap flowers from garage sales.
Look at all this representation of my darkness.
I’m so fierce though.
And I probably shouldn’t have a portrait of me on my own desk. But at least I’m looking at something lovely.
FYI you can get the “Reading Solves Everything” mug at my Society6 store. #UnashamedSelfPromo
Hey WHAT IS THAT YOU SEE????? A BULLET JOURNAL!!
I keep telling myself I want to art more. And look. This year I’m doing it. With much encouragement from Lisa, bless her. I am by no means doing very much or very well and it bothers me immensely to be arting and always unhappy with it. Because you’re a beginner, Cait, and beginners suck so practise, mate. Egh. Practise. EGHHH.
But here…have some more bullety photos. Also I think it’s called a “bullet journal” because by page 3 you kind of want to fill it with actual real bullet holes. No??? Just me???
I’ll most likely do a bullet journal post eventually. When I am a little less horrified at my own handwriting that is.
Now next to my desk is my Wall Of Penguin.
Because what else do you do when you buy a box of 100 Penguin Postcards??? I mean I could send them to people but my name is actually Scrooge and also I want to keep them.
Unfortunately they’re warping in the weather because the nickname for my town is The Wok, meaning it’s as humid as a greenhouse and transforms most of us into limp noodles in a stirfry. The other nickname of my town is the Rainbow Region because of the large local LGBTQIA+ community and also because it rains SO FRIKKIN MUCH that there are lots of rainbows to try and make we limp noodles a little happier. But we’re not.
I digress.
OH LOOK!! MY BED WHERE I DO NOT SLEEP BECAUSE INSOMNIA!!
Or should I say my dog’s bed.
He spent the first 4 weeks after we bought him crying in his little bed on the floor. I GAVE UP. What was I supposed to do????? Now I get 13% of one edge and he gets the rest.
Heinous little beast of floof and cutedom. He’s a Schnoodle, by the way = schnauzer x poodle. And he doesn’t like to get his paws wet on grass or take baths or go for walks or be cuddled unless he decides to be or have anyone tell him what to do ever.
So basically I own a cat who sits like a frog.
Also before we move COMPLETELY away from the photo of my bed…I hope you saw my Stiefvater and Schwab shrines up there. THEY ARE MY PRIDE. The Scorpio Races doesn’t fit on the Stiefvater shelf, but that’s okay because eventually I’ll have two Stiefvater shelves and my life will be infinitely better. I need to work on my Schwab hardcover collection but they’re so freaking expensive??? Like yes please I’d like a hardcover of Vicious and also just let me sell my soul real quick and my sister’s left kidney and my non-existent first unborn son and all his future friends.
I’m also currently reading Gemina at this time. Because I want to hurt.
Also this is my view from when I sit on my bed.
Now you know the secret of how I write so much and so fast. Because I spend a huge amount of time looking out this window since my job description is Author Who Stares Vaguely Out Of Windows 90% Of The Time. ISN’T THAT INSPIRING?!?? All the trees are a koala reserve so nobody lives there (#YAS) because who likes people around. Haha no way.
We have a lot of wildlife out there too. In the 6 years we’ve lived here, I have seen:
- bazillion wallabies (basically an every day occurrence)
- koalas quite frequently
- kookaburras and lorikeets which my dad feeds on our verandah
- blue tongue lizard which I thought was a snake at first and thought about never leaving the house again
- actual huge goanna, and I’m talking METRES LONG. In fact my older sister’s husband is American and he thought it was a crocodile in our yard. Hahah. Americans. So funny.
- python…yeah. an actual snake. but haven’t seen it in years
- other birds like finches, kurrawongs, willy wag tails, owls, king parrots, honey eaters blah blah etc etc
- I ACTUALLY HATE BIRDS FYI I GOT ATTACKED BY A KOOKABURRA AS A CHILD AND AM #DAMAGED
- the neighbours chickens
- foxes
- bunyips
- evil that does not sleep
Look! ANOTHER BOOKSHELF.
This one I got from…
…my….
…sister too?
Okay so it seems I have a slight theft problem with furniture.
Also it’s really bothering me that I’ve got The Winner’s Curse series in backwards. What even, Cait. Why can’t you be functional.
My last wall is actually wardrobe doors, but if you think that means they’re boring…HA! YOU’RE SO WRONG!
I’ve covered them with more spiderwebs of book ideas. And also I have an Etsy store (#UnashamedSelfPromoMomentPart2) which you should buy things out of and support my world domination plans. But the thing with making and selling art is that you have to put it somewhere. So I basically just enjoy my mobiles made for small babies.
You are never too old for origami mobiles.
This is the part where you buy one, by the way…
Plus more and moooooore spiderwebs to represent books I’ve edited and then wanted to burn. As is the writer’s life. The drawings were all my first attempts at zentangling and you know what? I’M NOT WINNING ANYTHING FOR MY ART. But I enjoy it and colour is nice.
WAIT WAIT WAIT.
Colour is non-essential and I do not fraternise with it.
Thus concludes the 4 walls of my room!
You know where your evil queen and lord of all exists now. It is my pocket of everything I love in this world. (Except for food. We’ve established that is a problem.) And now you know where I write and read and listen to audiobooks while I origami and get bossed around by my heinous dog who eats my #bookstagram props and sits on my head and yet I persist in loving him.
This is where I art. It took me 23 years of life to have my room look like my WILD MIND AND IMAGINATION OF ART threw up on it and I’m immensely pleased I’ve finally gotten here. It also amuses me no end how this is my inspiration setting and I write completely dark and bloody books. I’m great.
And this is where I’ve just realised that if my books rise up in the night to attack me for not loving them all equally, I’m going to be severely outnumbered. But that’s just the kind of risk I’m willing to live with.
No, my room is not yet perfect. But it has Art and photos and a lovely bookshelf and also a lovely (well, sometimes) sister. And I have some cool costumes which I made for a play. I have a delightfully snoozy cat and a silly dog, and my bookshelves are attached by genre and author last name within that. And I do need more, I keep having to kick books of my main shelf and it’s sad. I have a good view, and it reminds me to go outside and encounter the world. Thanks for showing us your room.
Aww, a LOVELY SISTER.😂 I used to have one of those but I kicked her out in favour of a bookshelf. #nice I’m pretty sure there is no such thing as “enough bookshelves”…and if it does happen, it’s like a very temporary thing that will soon change back to NOT ENOUGH BOOKSHELVES.😂
Thanks for reading! 🎉🎉
aaahhh, I LOVE the view from your room!! NO to creepy creatures though (aka lizards). As much as I’d like to steal bookshelves from my smol sister, she doesn’t have one #sadlife (she actually leeches books from me). And my bookshelf is now crying because new books don’t fit anymore. I hide some of them under my bed though. How efficient is that? hahahaha
Ack, what’s the point of having siblings if you can’t steal from them, is what I say. Although YOU are nice to let her borrow books.😂 I basically borrow books from the library and lend them to my sister.😂😂
Oh I love this! My room is just a mess. I am very very lazy haha. I also don’t have anything interesting in my room really, I only have a handful of books in my room cause everything else is in the ‘reading room’ as I like to call it. haha
Thanks for this post.
p.s If I saw a snake once and only once I would have been gone!
OH BUT YOU HAVE A READING ROOM?!? THAT IS SUPER GLORIOUS. 😍
(Snakes are really nooooot okay even when people say “oh by pythons don’t hurt you!” I just so BOO TO THAT. I’M STILL OUT OF HERE.)
Your room looks so cool! Sadly, we rent our house and I share with my sister, so my room is far from my dream bedroom. (One day I’ll have it! It will be tidy and minimalist and I’ll be able to see the floor and reach the curtains.)
I order my books alphabetically by author, which my mum (who’s a librarian) says is weird. It’s not weird, it’s tidy!
I used to share with my sister!! I think I did for like the first 15 years of my life.😂 I do hope you get your dream room sometime!!! I DO!!
And that’s really cool that you go by author. At least all the series are together, right?! 😜
I love the way your room is decorated!! It has so much personality and character in it. AND ALL THE BOOKS!!! Right now my room looks so bare compared to yours (mostly since we moved a year or so ago and my new room is small so only one of my bookshelves fit. Plus uni means I’m practically only home in it on weekends and a few holidays a year)
ALL THE BOOKS = ALL THE HAPPINESS I SAY.😂 Ack, it would be hard to be living in two places with uni and everything. Honestly I’m reeeally lucky to have a weirdly large room (our house was like custom built for a huge family…love ’em and their ideas of room sizes😂).
YOUR ROOM IS SO YOU CAIT! IT’S FILLED WITH BOOKS AND WRITING BITS AND BRIGHT EXPLOSIONS OF COLOUR AND I LOVE IT! *insert heart eye emoji* Lovely post!
IT MAKES ME VERY HAPPY THAT’S FOR SURE.😂
Love this Cait. Your ideas wall is spilling with ideas. And why didn’t you show us Narnia? :D. Love the room. It is a reader’s (and a writer’s) paradise
I should have showed you Narnia for sure. Except all the boxes I hoard (like literally, I just recreationally hoard empty boxes) would’ve fallen out BECAUSE I DON’T OPEN MY CUPBOARD. Ahem. Next time I’ll show my Narnian portal.😂
ARGH! Your room is amazing! Also, I think I might want to live in that garden of yours, it looks so peaceful!
As for my room, marriage = compromise *pfft* so I’m not allowed “flowery” stuff (haha) although I have sneaked some bookish candles in there. We also have a giant Game of Thrones quote on the wall. However, my side of the room is dominated by piles of books – I like to call it art!
Also, your dog is SO cute!! Oh and I love your desk! Basically, I’m jealous.
Oooh, a giant Game of Thrones poster! THAT IS ENTIRELY AWESOME!! I’m finally sneaking things on my walls after years of my parents trying to insist the walls remain clear.😂 And yES the books are art!!
He is the cutest little floof of evil. 😂 The other day he ripped into a bag of nuts he SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD and nearly devoured the whole thing. 🙈🙊
I LOVE YOUR ROOM, CAIT.
You have a bullet journal? That’s awesome! I have a day planner that I use as a bullet journal. I like the drawings and the mugs. You are hella artsy. Would love to learn more about bookstagram process. Because, I fail at it so much. I’m like, “Oh. Book. On bed. Snap picture. Kthnxbye.”
What. You write at a desk? Gross, Cait, you need to work from your bed. Obvi, you’re doing things wrong. Don’t conform, dude.
AUDIENCE: *GASP* SHE CALLED CAIT “DUDE”!!
ME: IT IS A TERM OF AFFECTIONS
Another idea: maybe you can talk about how the heck you started book blogging. I is curious.
AWESOME BLOG POST IS AWESOME.
*NINJA POOF*
*VANISHES*
I can’t belieeeeve I’ve started conforming and working at a desk. 😭 Not in bed in my pajamas at like 2am??? WHAT KIND OF WRITER AM I TO WORK 9 TO 5 HOURS AT A DESK. I CAN’T EVEN WITH MYSELF.
I call everyone dude. 😂
Omg, the story of how I started blogging is terrible! I literally just started because my sister told me to and it took me 2 years to even figure out what a blog really was and that I could interact with other people.😂 I’m honesly the worst.
Oooh your room looks great!
Since my brother moved out I have two rooms actually, but one looks like a construction site (we’re renovating it okay?) and the other feels like a closet space where I can barely turn around because it’s not very large and has to house all of my books on top of other less important things like clothes and my bed and well… one more important thing, which is me. So basically I can’t wait to at least have new wallpaper on the walls in the other room and maybe paint them if needed so I can put my books in there and start getting new furniture. One day I’ll get there!
Ugh it’s so ANNOYING when we must fit the average things like beds/clothes etc. into our rooms when truly all they SHOULD be for is just piles and piles of books. #priorities I hope your renovating comes along fast though so you can get all settled in!!
This is such a gorgeous space! I love all the books surrounding you 🙂
It’s so nice to be just surrounded by books honestly. 😍 MY PEOPLE.
I have an apartment not a room but I am still working on it. I live in China and for some reason it is impossible to get an unfurnished apartment here. So I have been stuck with weird Chinese furniture and cheap Ikea stuff (and a lot of weird knick knacks that I gathered up and put on the balcony out of sight and memory). When I moved overseas I had to leave all my books and rebuy them on the kindle. Over the years my bookcases have filled again but with journals. Sometimes I miss real books…
Oh China is awesome! I visited China for a month when my older sister (omg I have a lot of them😂) was living there and studying Mandarin. It would be really hard to live overseas and collect books and move around with them though. I feel the pain.
That is why I like your istagram stuff so much! I am vicariously surrounded by rainbow books!
Yesss author shrines! To Stiefvater and Schwab! Yes good. I very much appreciate your desk aesthetic. Also the 5-6ish books you keep in your room 😉
Yes just 5 or 6. Maybe even 7?? It’s hard to count tbh.😉
YOU DID WHAT TO MY FURNITURE.
Also, nice room. Really does look like your brain puked on the walls. Next time you do this post, there won’t be walls. Only books.
I GAVE IT A BETTER LIFE THAN YOU EVER DID. To be honest, I’ve sat at the desk more than you did in 6 years of owning it.
I love your room Cait! Actual goals, seriously. I want it. ALSO IS THAT TOOTHLESS I SPOT ON YOUR DESK?
I LOVE MY ROOM TOO. And no that’s not Toothless, IT’S ME.
THAT VIEW. Also, I have to share my room with a boy (bleurgh) so I don’t get to have the bookish room of my dreams, but it is lovely (if a tad – OK, a lot – messy). My book babies live in our spare room where they can spread out and be free! I am so jealous of your epic collection of hardbacks, I am a 99% paperback owner because money. (Harry Potter does not fall into this category). Love the Stiefvater shrine, she is one of my absolute faves!!! Schwab is high up on my TBR but I haven’t actually got any of her books or audiobooks yet, I definitely need to rectify this pronto.
Love your adorable pooch btw, I got home last night to find mine had absolutely shredded my Illumicrate box and started to nibble the corner of Red Sister by Mark Lawrence. She is now buried under the patio. (Jokes, she is my smol book eating demon dog but I love her so.)
AGh money is a problem when it comes to hardcovers!! I literally only started being able to collect hardcovers about last year? Or the year before? Because I freelance blog and get paid in book vouchers.😂 Before that it was 100% paperbacks because WHY ARE HARDCOVERS SO EXPENSIVE. WE JUST WANT TO HUG AND LOVE THEM.
You muuuust try Schwab someday!!! Like if I have a shrine for her books right next to My All Time Favourite Author Of Stiefvater The Queen, then she has to be good.😂
Noooooo, that’s terrible!!😂 My bit a book when he was a pup but least to say he has never done it since.😂
HAHAHA- no. I just smuggle my books downstairs and find them nice places to live on my MOM’s shelves, so my mom needs more space and not me. 😛 my room is half finished. AND NOBODY CARES BECAUSE THEY NEVER GO UP THERE. the walls need another coat of paint, as well as the trim, we have no crown molding or curtains, not even blinds, the carpet is DEAD and supposed to be replaced with wood, and ugly ceiling fan in danger of falling on my sisters bed, no cover for the light bulb, and don’t you dare get me started on the bathroom. And how long have we lived here? FOUR AND A HALF YEARS, PEOPLE.
(why yes, chocolate cake is in much demand.) 😛
Also, I have to orginize my books so I can see them, and my favorites get the best spots. 🙂 🙂 🙂 (of course. 😛 )
Most crazily, ~Olive
Ohhh it sounds like your room really needs help.😂 And omg I hear you with the slow renovations. My family tends to actually fix our house properly AND THEN PROMPTLY DECIDE TO MOVE.😂 Typical.
Favourites in best spots = very wise life decision. They deserve our full affection and love clearly.
Ok, your room is storming awesome and gorgeous and colorful and I wish I could get my room to look half as nice. (It doesn’t help that the room I’m currently in is all grey and we can’t repaint because we’re renting- well, actually, the room I’m currently in is a dorm room with cinderblock walls painted white, except where an old wardrobe left yellowed marks because the paint half came off, but still.) I really enjoyed getting to see your living space. And also your view, which is gorgeous. If I had a view like that, I bet I could totally do, like, 1K a day, even when it’s not NaNoWriMo. Oh, and I find it very cool that you have novels up on your wall. That’s awesome. (And your idea post-it thing! I should do that maybe instead of just keeping everything on my phone.)
Thanks for sharing this with us!
Ahhh thank you, Sarah!! And awk, I hope you get to decorate a room anyway you want some day!! It’s honestly the best feeling. <3 And the view definitely helps with plotting. Like when I write, it's generally at my desk now (omg I've become a disgusting responsible desk-sitter ewwww) but when I plot, I just stare out the window and it's the most inspiring thing. LOVE.😂
The visuals are good though!! They help ideas to feel more concrete, I reckon! And I forget them less often.😂
EVERYBODY STOP
There’s freaking wallabies and lorikeets outside your window?!
I’M COMING TO VISIT.
YES ALL THE TIME. IT’S NOT EVEN SPECIAL FOR ME ANYMORE. 😂😂
My window has deer and cardinals and blue jays. Let’s trade for a day!
EXCELLENT IDEA. I want to see a deer!!
I love your room. I share with my little brother, so my room’s not exactly how I want it, but I am an indecisive cat who cannot make up my mind on what I do want, so it works out for now. But we get bunkbeds, so it’s ok.
I do, in fact, have pets. My mom is a vet tech, so she’s involved in all these rescues and shelters and everybody calls her the moment they hear of animals needing a home, so we have too many animals. (My mom usually says NO. Give her some credit.)
Let’s see…there’s the three dogs, one of which was supposed to be a foster dog but we gave up after two years.
Then the three cats, two of which are my babies since I raised them from two weeks old and now they’re ten, and one of which my dad thinks is the literal devil (I sometimes agree, because when she gets hungry, she eats books. #evil. but she usually only eats my mom’s or my brother’s books, so I guess it’s ok).
Three birds, which all like to sing–loudly. and one of which is chirping along to Fall Out Boy and AC/DC as I type.
Three gerbils.
Four ferrets (don’t ask. they’re adorable).
And one giant rabbit who killed somebody’s snake in his youth. All my mom’s vet tech college students were terrified of him, and we only learned why a few weeks ago. My mom is so proud of him. It was a tiny snake, but it never saw him coming. Also, he’s named after Fred Weasley. And it’s sad, because his almost-identical brother George died when they were only a year or so old. WHY?! It’s not fair. And my dad may be a bookworm, but he doesn’t get the whole “feels” thing, because he kept bringing it up (We didn’t own George, so he thought it was ok to point out to everyone my backwards naming skills).
And to step away from my beloveds to my other favorite thing: my bookshelves! Living in a house with four bookworms has advantages. Spare bookshelves are not one of them. My brother and I have six in our room alone, although he does use one for toys. There are also stacks of books on the floor and piled on top of the shelves which aren’t floor-to-ceiling. I regularly check them to make sure they won’t fall. I want to organize them alphabetically, but. too many. There are two bookshelves in the hallway, four in my parents’ room (along with more stacks), two downstairs in the living room, and EIGHT in the den.
Still not enough.
Because we had to move some books to the storage unit. We also lose books, like all the time. Mom misplaced three Christmas presents, so we had to do an impromptu scavenger hunt to find our new books. (They were under her dresser behind her own books, it turned out.)
I used to share with my sister!! Our room was always SUCH a mess haha. I have zero complaints when that ended.😂
Aww,t hat’s awesome that your mum is involved in animal rescue!! That’s really just the best. Pets are the best things of ever honestly. (Although my dog doesn’t really like me as much as he likes my parents but…I try.) But eating books = noooooo. That’s not good. My dog tried to bite a book when he was a puppy and least to say that didn’t go down well.😂
FERRETS. 😍
A rabbit that…killed…a…snake. Okay that sounds like it’s out of Month Python.
There are never enough shelves in one’s life, right?!? 8 is awesome though!! I THINK YOUR HOUSE SOUNDS AMAZING WITH ALL THE ANIMALS AND BOOKS.
THIS IS SO INTERESTING!!!! I swear we only ever see your bookshelves haha (and never on top of them). You should do a vlog and then we can see your FACE as well.
(although I already have, from your Olden Days when you posted videos…mwahahaha #longtimefan)
*smothers you with a pillow* WHAT VLOGS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. THEY NEVER EXISTED. SHHH NOW. IT’S ALLLLLL IN YOUR IMAGINATION.😂
But IKR?! Like it’s the “behind the perfect instagram scene” revealed!😂 Although in my defence my bookshelf is perfectly square so makes a glorious insta photo by itself.
Ahh this post is so cute!! 😍 My room is pretty nice (I’ve sufficiently covered each wall with some form of books), but I wish I had more posters/artwork/cool things hung up. I’m infinitely jealous of the fact you live on a koala reserve. When I look out my window all I get to see is my neighbor’s wall and my dog digging holes in the backyard 😭 I also have to share my nice fluffy bed with a not-so-nice fluffly critter. But she’s adorable and cuddly so it’s worth it right? 😂
Agh, that’s not a great view!! I AM SORRY FOR YOU! Although my sister’s room looks out onto our water tank, so…😂 I think I’m just spectacularly lucky haha. I see a lot of koalas too which is awesome! 😍 My dog thinks it’s less awesome as he’d like to eat them. Silly animal. Good thing our pets are cute, right?!
I love your room! 🖤
And my room is nowhere near perfect. I have a bookshelf but it’s overflowing and my sisters don’t have one so I can’t steal 😭 and my walls are pretty bare, I do have two dream catchers, tapestry and painting I did but I don’t like how it feels empty and not me.
ME TOO.😂
Omg you need to talk to your sisters though, about getting furniture so you can steal it. Otherwise I mean, what even is the point of sisters?? I hope one day you get a room that feels very much like you though. It’s the best feeling of the world. <3
So wonderful. Seriously. Thank you for sharing. I know it’s not always easy for you to reveal your less-dark-and-conquering side. 😉
I feel like I’ve BETRAYED MY EVIL DARKNESS!! Because, I mean, surely I am not a ball of colourful glitter. Nooooo.
😂😂
Oh man, your view is stunning!
But, with all that stuff everywhere … how do you clean? (I’m sorry, I’m a huge clean-freak).
Yesss, it’s so good when one has writers block.😂
Well, it all just really STAYS clean, you know? Like my floor is all clear (I hate things on my floor…although I’d like to tell my DOG THAT because he likes to spread his toys everywhere) but otherwise it’s just bookshelves.😂 I don’t like wash my walls or anything?!?
Haha! No no I meant how do you dust and clean your surfaces? Like your desk and shelves 😛
Like, just with a duster? How else do you dust?😂
I love your room! It looks gorgeous 🙂
Thank you!! I’m so happy with how it looks.😂
OMG your room is so pretty and filled with creativity! (A dog always helps. Mostly with the pretty. They tend to get jealous when you’re working on creative projects.) I’ve always loved how bookshelves sorted by color look, but I’ve never had the patience to sort mine that way. I get too nitpicky about breaking up authors or series. However, my bookshelf is basically just me dumping books wherever they fit, so it could stand to have a little more organization. I also love bullet journals but have zero crafting skills, hence why I could never start one. The view outside your room is so pretty! The window in my room looks out onto a road, but there’s also a large cornfield just behind it, so it’s mostly country view. There’s also a lamppost on the corner that looks super cool and Narnia-esque in the snow.
My favorite rooms are my writer’s room (shared by the whole family, but I still call it mine, so shhhh) and my bedroom. I’ve wanted a yellow room ever since I was five or six, but every time we’ve moved to a new house, the room was already painted blue, and we didn’t want to paint over it. Now I finally have a yellow bedroom! It’s bright, so during the day, it basically reflects the sun everywhere, which I love. There’s a giant bookshelf with a cozy chair covered in geeky pillows and blankets for reading, stuffed animals all over my bed, posters everywhere, etc. It’s small and I’m the only one who goes in there, so it’s my quiet space. The writer’s room is lavender and my desk is my baby. It’s got my Pop Funkos, framed quotes about writing, index cards galore to help with editing, and a pinboard that looks like Sherlock’s wallpaper (so naturally I had to draw a smiley face on it in yellow marker) that I use to poke my geeky pushback pins into. It’s a really creative space.
It’s SO TRUE. Dogs get so jealous it’s ridiculous. Atticus starts chewing up my life if I spend too much time at my desk and not on the bed as he’s decreed should be my space. But like?? He pushes me off the bed??? It’s so ridiculous???
I hate breaking up series too.😂 Which is why the two tall skinny bookshelves are pretty much NOT ORAGNISED VERY WELL AT ALL. Although I do have my Stiefvater shrine and Schwab shrines in order. Mostly. I need more hardcovers for my Schwab appreciation. Bullet journals are AWESOME but honestly I need to learn how to art.😂
Ohh a cornfield is cool! I used to live in a house where our backyard literally lead onto a maize paddock. Unfortunately we didn’t know I was allergic to maize until then but..oh well.😂
YAY FOR A YELLOW BEDROOM THAT IS THE BEST! I think yellow is such a pretty colour. HAAPPPPY. Geek pillows and a cozy chair tho omg you are doing well. Very well. I’m very glad you fixed the Sherlock wallpaper though. That’s just good sense.
I want to be Sherlock when I grow up.
THERE’s SO MUCH SHERLOCK GIFS AND THINGS AND MY LIFE AMBITIONS ARE JUST ALL HERE
Besides being Sherlocked, I AM IN LOVE WTH YOUR ROOM> It’s so artsy and pretty and CREATIVE. ANDDDDDDDDDDD I WIIIISHHH for THAT many books because WOOOOWW! SO MANY!!
OOH, and do A Bullet-Journally POST! Do you have a page dedicated to Cake as you do for Writing?
Let’s ALL BE SHERLOCK. The best goals.
Ahhhh thank you.😂😂 I honestly really love my work space. <3 SO INSPIRING THO. And so far I do not have a cake page in my bullet journal and I think I've failed at life.
Loooove seeing your room! My room is mostly how I want it but I need a reading nook someday <3 I do have a pet but it's a horse so it resides nowhere near my room 😉
My bookshelves are arranged in a way that makes total sense to me but probably to no one else haha
A reading nook would be amazing right?!? Have you ever seen those reading-nets on google?! I WANT ONE OF THOSE. I may need a bigger house but pfft. We can work with that.
aww, your horse doesn’t snuggle at the end of your bed? WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU.
OMG I just looked up those reading nets, perfect for my future library!! Def house GOALS <3
haha I know, I'm the worst! Poor horse
Your room is gorgeous Cait!! I am Oh so jealous!! Might fly all the way to Australia just to see your gorgeous room <33 I love the mandala art you made! And holy heavens!! All those books and your plots everywhere <33 AND THE VIEW!! EVERY WRITER NEEDS THAT VIEW !!! Ahh, i don't really have words! This is perfection!!
afjdkslad thank you, Uma. I’m really happy with it! First time in my life I’ve had it juuust the way I want it to be. (Although, like there will always be a need for more flowers.😍) The view is EPIC for when one spends more time staring at it than actually writing…ah…writers life. SO FUN.😂
AAAAHHHHHHHH
(legit what I said when this appeared in my inbox)
BUT EEEEEEEKK THIS POST MADE ME SO HAPPY. I am not a snoop. AT ALL. But omo your room is AN EXPLOSION OF COLOR AND I LOVE IT. And your desk is so neat and aesthetic. My room is…. not. Ever. Even when it’s cleaned up and decorated. I obviously need to take aesthetic room lessons from you.
AAAWWWSSSHHH YOU MENTIONED ME. I’m so emotional and junk right now and I legit started tearing up when you mentioned me. YOU ARE SUCH A PRECIOUS CAKEN-BOO.
and your bullet journal is gorgeous stop being so hard on yourself. It’s already more amazing than mine ever was XD
also I didn’t know you had insomnia?? or I forgot and now I feel terrible??? *emergency hot chocolate and snuggles blankets* I’m sorry dear.
(aish I can’t get over all that beautiful color. help.)
AHHHHH < --- I legit said this when I saw your tweet. I'm smiling so much yOU PRECIOUS BEAN. <3 And you are totally a snoop.😂 But the best kind of snoop. I shall keep you. And believe it or not: my desk is ACTUALLY usually like this!! I mean, sometimes there's a lot of chords around because my stupid computer has no USB ports so I have to have leads and little adaptors everywhere. But otherwise...I'm actually NEAT. It's amazing. *squishes you* But it's hardly even a JOURNAL.😂 I gotta work on actually writing some journal stuff in it. But what do I even say "I read a lot of books and wrote a lot and sometimes I eat cake." <-- my life 😂 Didn't I tell you about the insomnia?! AGH SORRY ABOUT THAT. I'm so used to it though. Like my sister was whining the other day about getting 5 hours of sleep and I'm like "but isn't that like a good night????" 😂 No, legit, I have no idea how people can stay asleep for more than like 3 hours... IT'S SO COLOURFUL AND AESTHETIC THOUGH. I'M SO PLEASED.
*ish kept* HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR DESK LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME??? WAT??? Even when my desk is ‘clean’, I still have earbuds and a couple notebooks and just STUFF scattered on it. HOW. WHAT. EVEN.
and honey. I honestly haven’t seen hardly anyone who really JOURNALS in their BuJo. It’s not actually that common. Really. It’s really just a glorified to-do and remember stuff list. You don’t have to journal if you don’t want to. UNLESS YOU DO WANT TO JOURNAL. IN WHICH CASE YES JOURNAL ALL THE THINGS. I actually started journaling this year but I do it in a separate bound journal and I usually only write a sentence or two because I can’t think of anything to write either XD I don’t get deep or anything.
YOU MIGHT HAVE TOLD ME ABOUT YOUR INSOMNIA? I feel like you would have??? Either way DON’T APOLOGIZE. Now I feel bad for getting 8+ hours of sleep every night. Legit nothing affects my sleep XD I’M SORRY THOUGH. I WISH YOU COULD SLEEP BETTER. *huggles* sleep is life.
I’m magic. I TOLD YOU I’M MAGIC.
Oh good…I’m not alone in my journal-failure.😂 I kind of love how you do the tracking things though…I want to do that. I just can’t figure out what to track though because I live basically on a clockwork schedule so I don’t have anything that I might forget to to do.😂 Actually it might be interesting to track how much time I spend reading or blogging or something??? Just for curiosities sake??
DUUUUDE. WHY WOULD YOU FEEL BAD FOR SLEEPING.😂 Dooooon’t. My sister could probably sleep like 10 hours a night and I just find it hilarious. It seems boring tho. Like how do you write 9 novels per night if one is JUST BORINGLY SLEEPING, HMM? 😉
you are DEFINITELY magic. There is no doubt.
YOU ARE NOT FAILING ANYTHING JOURNAL RELATED, STOP SAYING THAT. The fact that you started your Bujo is a SUCCESS it doesn’t matter what you do with it afterward or how you use it. Time tracking is a good idea! I’ve seen lots of different trackers of keeping time and seeing how much time you’re spending at certain tasks.
BUT I REALLY REALLY LIKE SLEEPING. seriously sleeping is one of my favorite things EVER XD I’d rather sleep for 8+ hours than write books at night. That’s what daylight is for XD
AND I FORGOT TO SAY THIS BEFORE BUT: oh my WORD that view out your window!!! IT’S SO GORGEOUS.
YOU STRANGE SLEEPFUL CREATURE YOU. Although once upon a time I slept in by 12 minutes and it was very very strange. Will not repeat. *shakes head vehemently*
you’re so adorable with your strict routine XD I WISH I COULD KEEP A STRICT ROUTINE, I’D BE MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE. But I would also shrivel up and die of boredom XD I need my spontaneity XD
(although your lack of sleep explains A LOT of how you get so much done per day. Your waking days do have more hours than the rest of us XD)
You have such a nice view! When I look out my window, I see the neighbors’ house. Your room is very colorful. My room is mostly empty because owning stuff stresses me out. I give away a lot of the stuff I get.
I’m extremely lucky!! My sister’s window outlooks to our rain tank.😂 I LOVE MY ROOM. haha. But hey minimalist is cool!! My parents are really minimalist in the rest of the house and then it’s like walk into my room and — BOOM.
CAIT. WHY IS YOUR ROOM EVERYTHING I WANT MY ROOM TO BE?! I am incredibly jealous, but only in the least scary and most supportive way possible.
First of all– practice your cello. It’s beautiful and misses seeing the sun. You can perform for your books! Aren’t they like plants and need to be given regular words of encouragement anyway? I am brilliant. Tiny book concert.
Second– even though I have a terrible eye for colors and art and aesthetic, I feel a BILLION better knowing that your magical rainbow bookshelf isn’t your whole room. THERE ARE LIBRARY BOOKS! Things aren’t always color coded! It’s amazing and you’re human and I love you more. I’ll never be great at #bookstagram, but you are much more real now.
Thank you for sharing such a personal part of your world with us. I love this post!
YOU MAKE ME LAUGH.😂😂AWW. *shares cake with you to make it better*
Duuude, I know. I feel so bad about the cello. But the thought of restringing it when I could buy books….(shh I realise I have so many books as is😂but it’s an addiction)…
yES! You can know there is more to me than the one shelf! And that the other shelves are basically hot messes. 😂I mean, how do I even have the most fluffy contemporary of ever of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before right next to Game of Thrones?!?? Proof that I have failings.😂
First of all, it goes without saying that your bookshelves are #goals… yes even the threatening piles on top. Second, I am envious! Since being in university for the last four years, I’ve had to move/change homes/bedrooms at minimum TWICE/YEAR. Which means I can never settle into one place and put down roots and decorate the way I want. Boo.
Your room is the dream mix of library + writing space + minimal sleeping space, because who needs that?
Also, our pets are opposites. I have a cat, but she acts like a dog. Likes to play fetch. Wants to cuddle constantly. Rolls around on the carpet and demands belly rubs. It’s strange.
Aww, that would suck not to have a consistent room!! I FEEL YOUR PAIN. I hope someday you’ll get to have a constant room and you can set it up how you want!! And ya…I mean, who really needs sleeping space when you can have more bookshelves?!? #priorities
Dude, your cat and my dog need to chat about their rolls in life. I mean, I guess they’re not conforming to stereotypes BUT SERIOUSLY.😂
I always get room envy because mine is as basic as the come. XD Your darling floof is precious. I too understand the struggle of waking up in the middle of the night and finding that my beloved canine has pushed me to the edge BUT HE LOOKS SO CUTE SLEEPING AND I WOULD BE A CRIMINAL IF I MOVED HIM. I’m pretty sure I would go to jail if I dared to disturb his dreaming (he yips in his sleep and it’s all very adorable).
THE FLOOF IS PRECIOUS BUT YET EVIL.😂 As all the best floofs are, probably. And dude, I spend SO MUCH TIME shoving him over so I can have more than 13% of the bed. Like he’s small!??? He’s a SMALL DOG and yet he takes up so much room and he’s so freakishly strong. I can’t even. Aww to the yipping in his sleep though. <3 I wonder what dogs dream about.😂
Your spiderweb of evil book ideas looks interesting! Does it help you get more organized when it comes to writing? I”ve been looking for more ways to get organized, but it can be hard as I am in no way an organized person, ha ha.
I’m actually just really good at being organised because I get so obsessed with my stories.😂The spiderwebs help me to actually rEMEMBER what I’m doing!! I swear, my memory is just so so bad. But having the visual representation gets me through a draft without forgetting my narrator’s name. (True story: that happens.😂)
…So are you Hiccup? Because Toothless can’t type.
I have an entire dream house. It involves a library.
…I will never be able to afford it, but, hey, a girl can dream.
TOOTHLESS COULD TOO TYPE. DON’T DOUBT HIS CAPABILITIES. Honestly my dream house would just BE a library. Like books in every room. I’d have a genre per room…fantasy would be in the kitchen as a subtle pun about how I can’t cook. 😑😂😂
My dog is the exact same. Walks? No way. Hugs? Seriously, dude? Baths? Kill him now. Sometimes he legitimately tries to sleep across my pillows. It’s a problem.
Your origami is so pretty! (I cannot spell the word origami. Seriously. What is wrong with my life.) I wish I had a Stiefvater shrine! (although I DNF’d the Shiver series partway through Linger.) Through your obsession I decided to read Scorpio Races and the Raven Cycle (which now competes for favorite series!) and have been busily converting friends. (My friend Ashley is on Raven King and I constantly feel the need to scream BLUE IS PART TREE!! But I digress.) Anyway, thank you for introducing me to Stiefvater! (Not sure if I’ve actually mentioned it before. But still.)
P.S. I just discovered the magic of the Paper Fury arrow shooting across the screen. It’s wonderful. 🙂
What on earth is it with our dogs. Like don’t they understand what it is to be a dog?!?? I begged for a dog so I could do walks (I go on two walks per day haha) AND HE FULLY HATES LEAVING THE HOUSE.😂 The only dog thing he does is find things to tear apart. Like pillows and walls.😂 When he was a puppy he legit chewed a hole in the wall because he missed me. I had a shower. FOR LIKE 5 MINUTES I WAS GONE AND THEN — HOLE IN THE WALL. omg.
My Stiefvater shrine is my absolute pride and joy. 😍 Although I’m frustrated her faerie books don’t come in hardcover and I wanted a shrine of 1000% hardcovers. *weeps for loss*
My room is never as clean as I want it to be. At least my mom doesn’t care. I do have enough book shelves, just not enough books to fill them up. The giant one I have has eight books on the bottom shelf. I keep double layering the, because who want to put books they recently bought and liked on the bottom shelf?! Not me! I do have a pet (dog), she is like my shadow(she’s everywhere), She is very smart (I think she’s evolving), she knows when I do certain things what they mean. Like she’ll see me doing my hair, and start running around because she knows I’ll take her for a walk afterwards. She is also very perceptive when she begs for food. I also have a Bearded Dragon, he is fierce. He is very calm when he wants to be though, and likes to explore. You sound like you live at a zoo. I used to have chickens though and I miss them:( If we had that many lizards around my house though my older sister would try and touch all of them. Oh, how does one explain how I organize my bookshelf?! I don’t really have an order, but there is one, if that makes sense? I usually put all the books on the shelves, live with it for a day(I usually hate it). Then rearrange them the next day into an arrangement I love.
I double layer all my shelves too. *wails* I mean, I’d LIKE them to be all on display, but as you can see there is literally not another centimetre of space in my room. Unless I block off the door.😂 But then food….
Aww, your dog sounds so smart!! My dog can tell time really well…like at 4pm he starts hiding because he knows it’s walking time.😂 He’s so devious honestly. The LAZIEST dog. Omg you have a bearded dragon!!! THAT IS SO COOL!! YOU ACTUALLY OWN A DRAGON!! ABSOLUTELY GOALS HERE!!
This is AMAZING. I like getting a peek into your world. You rarely show photos of your face (though I have seen your hands and legs a lot!) so it’s like we can pretend you just live somewhere else entirely, sans a head. BUT LOOK AT THAT LUSH GREENERY OUTSIDE YOUR ROOM. Talk about #viewgoals.
But you must tell me where you got those white cover, spine-sprayed editions of The Hunger Games IMMEDIATELY because I have never seen them and I need them for my Hunger Games collection. I have nearly all of the collections so I NEED THIS SET PLS.
Aww, thanks, Leah!! I’m glad you liked it!😊 It was really fun to do a bit of a different sort of post haha. And hey my head is SORT OF in the first picture. Sort…of…😂
Oh so they’re the Australian deluxe edition! I bought them at Big W which I’m pretty sure is just an Aussie store haha. But I think you can get them on Amazon? Just google white deluxe edition. *nods*
This is so fun! My room has two problems: 1.not enough shelves and 2.noy enough space for shelves. How many siblings do you have? It sounds like a lot. I have six.
Those are two VERY TERRIBLE BUT RELATABLE PROBLEMS. *weeps with you* Like my mum found a bookshelf at a garage sale for sUPER cheap but … there is literally nowhere left in my room to put it.😂 Unless I block off the door and she wasn’t keen on that?? Weird.
I have 5 siblings! Four sisters and one brother…although I’m the only one left at home!
I don’t see a problem with blocking the door! 🙂 I guess food is necessary though… Cool! I have four brothers and two sisters.
Ahh, your room is amazing and that view is absolutely gorgeous! I wouldn’t mind staring out that window 90% of the time 🙂 Through the once-seen python would scare me so much I’d never leave the house again! Also, how great is it to be surrounded by books? Not counting the fear for your life if they all decide to fall or something of course…
I have like three bookshelves at the moment which are all super full. Other than a vague organisation by genre and series, there is not really any rhyme or reason to them. I need more bookshelves but then I also need a bigger house… so maybe I should just stop buying books or only buy ebooks (hahahahaha… no)
I’ve been wanting to try bullet journaling but then I have a very small attention span and basically no patience so yes, my bullet journal would probably also be filled with bullet holes after only 3 pages 🙂
Ugh I HATE pythons. And like people say “oh they’re harmless” but no. No thanks. Any snake is a snake that should be dead and that’s my final word on the matter.😂 But the yard is GORGEOUS…from a distance.😂
(I have my bookshelf actually screwed to the wall. #safety)
A bigger house and more bookshelves = basically every bookworm’s plea, right?! It’s not like we’re asking for a castle in Scotland or anything…(ACTUALLY WAIT.)
Your room is so great! I love how you’ve decorated it. Though this really isn’t fair, you’ve got super reading skills, super writing skills AND super decorating skills? 😀 But really, this is a great post idea! 🙂 I’d do it but my own domain is boring af. (Send help!?) 😉
Bahahha.😂😂 YOU MAKE ME LAUGH!!! I don’t know about decorating skills…I think it’s the books that make it?!? And all the flowers. I looove flowers. I think I have an addiction. 10/10 recommend filling your room with fake flowers!!
😀 Well the books are all beautiful. I definitely need to get more bookshelves so I can show off mine. I only have two bookshelves.
I’ll see what my partner thinks of fake flowers lol. Thanks! 😀
CAIT. SO MANY BOOKS. THEY’RE SO BEAUTIFUL. AND LOOK HOW PRETTY YOUR DESK IS. AND THE CUTE DOGGY. I LOVE IT.
THE CUTE DOGGO IS REALLY THE ONLY REASON THIS POST IS AWESOME, LET’S BE REAL NOW. LOOK AT HIS LITTLE FROG FACE. I LOVE HIM.
Yay for mind-maps, I love them! I like your desk and space near it. None judging your tbr-shelf from me. Lol. My tbr can cause a heart attack. I didn’t know you have a dog, Cait. He is a cutie. Also your room is so pretty and absolutely You. Thanks for sharing!
Ahhh thank you!! And like usually my neatness would be a lie.😂 But ever since I abducted my sister’s desk, it HAS been super neat and I’m really happy to keep it this way!! Even with my new bullet journal explosions which end up very messy.😂
ISN’T HE CUTE. CUTE LITTLE EVIL. Yesterday my parents were going out of town and he stole a whole bag of nuts out of their suitcase and devoured them.🙄🙄 It’s a wonder he didn’t puke, the little dastardly mutt.😂
Little evil indeed. I hope he is well after such feast.
I LOVE your room! My room is definitely not the way I want it to look buuuuut that’s mostly because I’ve been a slob who hates doing laundry. So, there’s that. But I have a husband and boy’s laundry is gross! lol! (Actually most of the laundry on the floor is mine :guilty face:) I did just recently add bookshelves to out room and I love it. I have books everywhere. My favorites were on the shelf under my nightstand and then stacks and stacks on both dressers. So technically, I was doing us a favor by adding bookshelf because now there’s no messy stacks! lol! I’ve thought of turning our half finished basement into my own personal library….but that hasn’t happened yet. One day! Great tour! Thanks for sharing
More bookshelves is ALWAYS a favour to humanity. *nods sagely* And plus like who wants walls??? When we could just see shelves??? Ultimate goals is to have more shelves than bare walls.😂 That MIGHT not happen while I’m living at home though hahhah. My parents were not keen on the idea of me suggesting we get rid of all the furniture in the lounge room and just put in shelves. I DON’T UNDERSTAND.
Gahhh, I have serious room envy right now 😍 My room’s tiny and extremely messy so I could never do an adequate room tour, haha. I definitely don’t have enough bookshelves, but I also don’t have enough room to put any more in 😭 And I have a wall similar to your Penguin wall, but mine’s vintage comic covers instead.
I wish my dog would come into my room for any reason other than to wake me up, he sleeps on my parents bed and won’t come anywhere near mine so I always feel shunned 😅 As for how I organise my books I have mine alphabetical order by author’s surname just like a library. I admire people who have rainbow bookshelves because I’d never be able to find anything 😂
Oohhhh vintage comic covers?! THAT’S SO COOL!!! I discovered later that there’s Penguin cookbook postcards…so I feel like I might need to invest in them in the future. Because food. 😍😂😂
Aw, I hear you with the dog shunning! He’s kind of forced to be in my room at night haha, but he would 100% rather hang out with my parents than me. HE’S MY DOG. DID HE NOT GET THIS MEMO???😂
I organise by colour! Obviously. ☺Great tour, I really enjoyed reading this and seeing where you lurk! ✨
OH GOOD. We obviously organise the best possible way. *hi fives*
YOUR ROOM IS LOVELY. Your books are so colorful, and I relate so much to the PILES AND PILES of tbr. *sweats* I also love seeing all your writing stuff on the walls!! I should do something like that, I tend to just get everything all jumbled up in notebooks and binders. A big visual reminder that I’m supposed to be DOING THINGS would be really good.
I have one shelf that’s rainbow organized, but otherwise I’m strictly an Alphabetized by Author’s Last Name (and then by Book Title or Series Number) kinda person. (Except right now I’m more of a “bury my shelves in piles of books that I NEED to organize and shelf kind of a person…)
THE TBR NEVER ENDS. IT ONLY GROWS AND THEN STARTS THREATENING OUR LIVES!! (I mean, I’m honestly so overwhelmed I’m just rereading old books I love.😂 I’m sure that’ll help.)
But yes!! Visuals are SO GOOD.
I admit the two tall skinny shelves are more organised by author than colour. Because sometimes it’s too painful to split up series?!? Like my Raven Cycle children MUST be together!!😂
That’s my problem with trying to consistently organize by color!! I CAN’T BREAK UP SERIES, and it hurts to break up an author’s work, too. MAYBE WE’RE TOO EMOTIONALLY ATTACHED TO THESE BOOKS, HMMM?
YOUR ROOM IS BASICALLY BLUE SERGEANT’S + BOOKS. Also you are short like Blue so this makes me wonder if maybe you are her in an alternate universe or something maybe?? 🤔😛
And omg, who snuck the picture of you about your dark dragonish business?!?! Was it a lurking fan waiting in the shadows with a camera to catch you off guard? A SISTER ATTEMPTING TO LEAK YOUR SECRETS ON THE INTERNET AS VENGEANCE FOR SOMETHING??? You are a very fierce-looking dragon, by the way (I assume your mouth is open for roaring, not yawning???).
CAN I COME TO YOUR HOUSE?? I just want to 1) see all the cool Aussie animals including the garden crocodiles and 2) use your room as a train station to Narnia, don’t mind me just passing through. 😂
Say hi to your handsome bookshelf for me, it is a lovely creature of colorful unicorn bliss! (Also please give me a heads up if you DO turn out to basically be Blue Sergeant in disguise and get sucked into a quest to find welsh kings b/c #IWantToComeTooPlease! 😏)
Omg I hadn’t thought about Blue Sargent BUT YES. I ACCEPT THAT. I DO. THAT’S MY ULTIMATE GOAL. I JUST NEED A TREE NOW. I’m probably the inspiration for Blue, let’s be honest here. AND I don’t eat my greens.
I am fierce. Sometimes I allow images of myself to be caught because, like Spider Man, I like people to know I am mysterious an unknowable.
I SHALL CHARGE ANYONE FOR PASSING THROUGH TO NARNIA. I SHALL MAKE A LIVING FROM MY PORTAL.
Agh, the aesthetic of your room is so pretty AND I AM THE JEALOUS. So bright. So colorful. So full of books, dangit! 🙂 Love the shelves and spiderwebs and flowers, too!
Those origami mobiles!!! You are crazily artistic, Cait! Also I was excited to see pictures of your bullet journal! You’ll remember that I was one of the ones begging for some on Twitter. 🙂
Your dog is adorable. I have said this before, but it’s worth reiterating. 🙂 Dude, my dog is SUCH a cat as well. And she sits like a frog. It’s very weird.
I’m rambling. However, all this to say that I found this to be a fun, informal, lighthearted post and your workspace is LOVELY! 🙂 The pictures with arrows and captions were fun, too! 🙂
THANK YOU, KATE. I QUITE LIKE IT MYSELF.😂 But shhh, it’s not colourful. It’s dark and evil like me. #LivesinDenialOverRainbows Omg I forgot about that on twitter.😂 I’ll definitely do that bullet journal post…just as soon as I…get more pages done.😂I haven’t done ANYTHING for March because #lazy. So I need to get onto that.
He is an adorable little floof. Although currently he’s barking his head off at his own reflection so I’m feeling a little less inclined to think he’s adorable.😂 Ahem. I should go explain to him about mirrors but whatever.
I’m glad you liked it!! It was fun to do a post that’s a bit different to my usual mess.😂
I ADORE THE FACT THAT YOUR ROOM IS 87% BOOKS. Dude. Jealous. xD
You’re going to have to get a mini-fridge, then your problems will be over. I mean, yeah, you’ll probably see less of your family, but if they really want to see you, they can come visit you in your lair, right? Just don’t let them eat any of your food.
THAT VIEW IS SO LOVELY. All I can see from my bed without turning around is my bedroom door. xD
I so do NOT have enough bookshelves. Mine is officially all filled up, which aside from the fact that this means I have lots of books, is not acceptable at all. I need more immediately.
Ooh, organizing… I mostly organize my books by author? But I organize some of them according to genre, like for example, I keep all my classics together. And I also have some that are randomly together?? Like I have my extra copy of The Hobbit next to a knitting book?? Not sure how that happened. xD
I LOVE BOOKS. IT’S HARD TO TELL ISN’T IT. I JUST LIKE TO BE SUBTLE ABOUT MY PASSIONS. And dude: yes. Mini fridge. It’s obviously the answer. And honestly no one can be bothered coming downstairs so basically I’ll be fine and won’t have to share my food. #lovely
Aaaall bookworms need more shelves. And if they don’t, then CLEARLY they need more books.
OMG YOUR ROOM IS SO BEAUTIFUL. 😍 Unfortunately, my room is drab and boring and basically a hot mess. I really want a reading room for myself, but there are literally no more rooms in the house lol. I’m hoping that when I move out and get a place of my own when I’m older, my room will be more “me,” I guess????
I DO HAVE A DOG. She sits just like yours does, so you’re not alone! She really likes to chew things and eat stuff she shouldn’t have, but she’s adorable, so I forgive her (sometimes).
My bookshelf used to be arranged by height (I say used to because now bookstagram has destroyed my shelves and my books can be found in piles on the floor 😂) because I have both paperback and hardcovers. And because I hate when books don’t match in height.
Oh a reading room would be SO COOOOOOL. I suggested to my parents that we should turn the entire house into a library but yet they said no??? So weird. So confusing. Obviously they don’t have their priorities right. *shakes head sadly*
OUR DOGS SHOULD BE FRIENDS WITH THEIR WEIRDNESS. Okay except my dog literally hates ALL people and ALL other dogs.😂 He has … so many problems…
Omg my books are always EVERYWHERE when I’m doing a bookstagram shoot too.😂
THIS WAS SO COOL OMGGGGG!!! YOUR ROOM IS GOALS, BASICALLY. ALL THOSE BOOKS. ASDFGHJKSDLAJ WOW. <3 YAAAS. :''''') Also I'm probably one of those Americans who would mistake a goanna for a crocodile because SCARY OMG. The great outdoors and I have a very fragile relationship. *nervous laughter* THAT VIEW IS SO PRETTY THOUGH!! And all the color in your room is fabulous. IT JUST LOOKS LIKE SUCH A LOVELY PLACE TO CHILL AND GET INSPIRED. Also Atticus Bean is actually the most precious floof ever. <33333333 I HAVE LIKE 3 OF YOUR LOVELY MOBILE CREATIONS AND I PLAY WITH THEM AND WATCH THEM SPIN LIKE A SMOL BABY DON'T JUDGE :''') they are so pretty omg.
SUCH A FUN POST EEEEEEEEEEEP THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR SECRET LAIR WITH US!!
Bahahahha, PROBABLY.😂I mean, c’mon now, though, there’s no WATER around here for crocodiles.😂 But still. It was a whacking big gonna, I’ll concede to that. (I hate gonanas tho, ugh. Too much like,…like snakes with legs.)
IT IS A LOVELY PLACE TO BE INSPIRED. I’M VERY LUCKY AND BLESSED TBH. <3
Atticus is precious and evil and I probably have only myself to blame for raiing him like that??😂
I'm not judging. EVERYONE NEEDS MOBILES. THEY SHOULDN'T JUST BE FOR BABIES. I lowkey don't like selling my favourite ones because they're so pretty.😂
Your room looks lovely!!! No wonder you’re so proud of it (really Cait it’s wonderful and possibly deserves all the prizes??). My room is currently (and always) a mess but mostly because I’m moving house and there’s stuff practically everywhere. I’m so excited about getting a new room though! (Will keep on dreaming until I manage to arrange my new room). I think your backyard view looks soooooo good and can’t wait to have a bit of a backyard myself! Your bookshelves are lovely (for some weird reason messy and going-to-fall-over book piles are my one true love) and I WISH I HAD A PET SO BAD. (We might get a parrot in the new house!!).
N’aww, THANK YOU.😂 It is my favourite hobbit hole of ever. <3 And oh moving house!! Good luck with that...moving can be so stressful. But new rooms and arranging them in nice ways is VERY good. Very much like. I hope your new backyard is great!!
Omg it happened again. YAYAYAYAYAY YOU POSTED SOMETHING!!!
GASP. Is that… your bookshelf??? WHAT HAPPENED? WHERE’S ALL THE LOVELY RAINBOW BOOKS OF COLORFUL SPARKLES??? WHY IS IT ALL STACKED AND ASDFGHJKL just kidding it looks much better than mine.
Your/your sister’s desk looks awesome! And so does your bullet journal! DO A BULLET JOURNAL POST. PLEASE. I BEG OF YOU. Actually, you should probably wait until I have enough time to actually start a bullet journal, thanks for being so kind and considerate, Cait.
And OOH YOUR SCHWAB AND STIEFVATER SHRINES ARE GR9. And *gasp* you have insomnia too??? It’s probably a writer/bookworm thing, because I have to take melatonin to fall asleep??? And
THIS WAS A WONDERFUL TOUR OF YOUR EVIL LAIR THAT MAKES MY EVIL LAIR IN SHAME. #rainbowbooks
Waaait, what do you mean?!😂 That’s the bookshelf I always take photos of on instagram! It looks like that in my insta photos too. 😉 The smaller bookshelves I don’t put on insta because they’re not so aesthetically pleasing and I’m vain about my feed haha.
I WILL DEFINITELY DO THE BULLET JOURNAL POST SOMETIME…I haven’t even done any pages for March yet, so SOMETIME.😂 I’m so bad at art omg.
Dude, insomnia hi five! I mean, sleep is pretty boring. We could be reading or writing 9 books simultaneously in our heads right? Who actually needs sleep.
XD I was talking about the stacked books on top of your bookshelf. 😛
Yay! And NO YOU ARE GREAT AT ART. Have you seen MY art??? No. You haven’t. Because it’s horrible.
Sleep is honestly overrated. Honestly, who cares if you’re tired the next day? YOU HAVE SO MUCH MORE TIME.
Oh those are always there on top of my shelf!😂 I have no rooooom.
Yes exactly. Sleep is for the weak.
I am insanely jealous that you can see koalas out your back window.
I’ve seen so many it’s not even that special anymore.😂How bad is that?!😂
Love this and ahhh so many artsy decorations ^_^ I spot (amongst many others) On the Edge of Gone! It’s such a brilliant book.
I haven’t read it yet BUT I REALLY WANT TO!! I should definitely read it in April for Autism Awareness month, right?!
My room isn’t big enough for it to look how I want it to. I used to have a digital piano in here, but then I had to start working from home, so I had to get a huge desk to accommodate the monitor (this was back before LCD monitors, when everybody had CRT monitors and gave themselves hernias by trying to lift them). Now I have a tiny desk that’s just big enough for my laptop, but I still don’t have room for the piano because of my bookshelf. *sigh*
My dog used to like to hide under the bed, too. But backwards, so her back toes were sticking out. I think she thought she couldn’t be seen…
My bookshelves are… a mess. Case in point: I have all 4 books in the Twilight series… but only the first two are in order on the correct shelf. The other two are stuck in wherever I could find room.
Awk, that is pain, but I understand! In my old house my room barely fit my bed and a teeny tiny desk, let alone any shelves.😂I only got this shelf when we moved to this nice big house.
These dogs and their hilariousness.😂 I’ve filled up under my bed with boxes so Atticus only has a small corner to hide in because otherwise he’d just be under there when I can’t get him out whenever it’s time to walk. THE FIEND.
Never enough bookshelves, right!?
THIS IS SO WONDERFUL. XD I’ve been wondering what the great evil lair of queen Cait looked like for a while now. IT IS AMAZING AND BASICALLY THE PERFECT ROOM.
AWW, THANKS, GRACE. I’M GLAD YOU LIKE IT.😂 It was so fun doing a different kind of post for once!!
WOW! Thanks for showing us your room! I’m enthralled by your view! You live in a beautiful place. Australia is so pretty.
I do live in such a nice place. 😍 Especially since my sister’s room looks out onto a water tank hhaah. I scored the best bedroom. 😂
Your room is GORGEOUS! Much cleaner than I’d imagine any bookworm’s room being. 😀 Your pup is lovely! Have you ever seen GIlmore Girls, especially season 6? Lorelai gets a dog named Paul Anka and he has quite a few neuroses; it reminds me a little of your Schnoodle. 🙂
My room looks nothing like what I want it to look like, mostly because I have to share the house with a husband and a son, neither of which pick up after themselves very well so there’s that to contend with. ;_; I do have the good fortune to have a husband that lets me buy as many books/bookshelves as I can stuff into our apartment though, so that makes up for it a bit! All of the shelves (25 of ’em) are crammed full, plus the stacks on top and the random piles on tables all over the place. Mwahaha, so many soldiers for the future war when books are soldiers. 😉
I still have this big dream of having all of my books perfectly shelved and not stacked randomly around the house. All of the ones that are on shelves are organized, so that’s something, but the piles are quite random. I imagine one day having a house with at least one dedicated library room, kind of like Beauty & the Beast, but I know there will always be at least one shelf in every room because not having books in a room seems freaky.
We’re a big pet family here. We’ve got 6 kitties, one of which is curled up on my lap as I write this, and one parakeet. I love dogs, but I don’t think I’d have the wherewithal to do all the walking they require; I much prefer the indoors and only one cat has ever shown interest in walking on his leash in his younger years.
As for organization: all the comic books and manga are organized by title and are on the shelves in the bedroom. All of the other books (fiction, non-fiction, etc.) are organized thus: first by author’s surname, then chronologically by the book’s publication date. If there’s a series, it goes chronologically by the first book followed by the rest of the series. 🙂 I shudder to think of the work it would take to turn all of this into a rainbow room, though I do appreciate the effort that you’ve put into your shelves.
One of these days I’ll catalog all of them so I can present a list for gift givers and that I consult when I’m out shopping, but with 3000+ books, that’s going to take FOREVER.
I liiiike my life organised.😂 Well SORT OF ORGANISED. I swear that top stack on my main bookshelf is a bit of a daunting problem. I keep glaring at my TBR and hoping it sorts itself out and yet: no. So rude.
I haven’t seen Gilmore Girls but I’ve heard of it copiously!
Awww, 25 shelves!?? THAT IS AMAZING. YOU ARE LIVING THE LIFE.😂 I suggested to my parents we should turn the whole house into just one big massive library and yet they were all like “no”. I don’t understand. where is their happiness.
AW KITTENS. <3 And honestly my dog doesn't have the wherewithal to do all the walking I REQUIRE.😂 I go out for a morning run which he threw so many tantrums about joining me in that I just leave him home. And it's all I can do to drag him outside. Like I was worried something was wrong with him?? But no. He loves the beach.😂 And he loves walking in new places. He just thinks that going around the block all the time is beneath him. Omg.
Thank you for the compliment! It’s not quite where I want it yet, but I’m glad to be able to buy the books I like. It’s a comfort, especially now that I’m out “on my own”. There are still grumbles from my dad when he visits about how I have too many books, but I ignore that because really, is there such a thing? NOPE!
I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a dog that didn’t like to walk. Huh, funny. 😀 The beach sounds like an amazing walk. Does he play in the water at all or is he just a fan of the sand? I wish we lived closer to water, but the beach is something like two-four hours away. ;_;
I love this so much! Thanks for sharing! I spy my favorite rainbow half ball, so that makes me happy! I’m obsessed with your origami. I’m gonna steal it alllll! I also LOVE the view from your window! Omg. I’d never leave! It’s so gorgeous, and I would DIE if I saw a koala in real life! They are so cute, and I’m 87.2% positive I’d try and claim one for a pet. ALSO, I have a tiny floof of a dog, too! Lastly (I think), I love the coloring pages and drawings you have! I can’t art AT ALL which is the saddest thing ever. I desperately wish I could draw, but alas, it was not mean to be. So instead, I color. I also am trying to teach myself hand lettering, which is fun!
That rainbow half globe COULD BE YOURS YOU KNOW.😂 I’ve actually finally put it up in my etsy store. I’m just going to have to make myself one too haha.
Koalas are cute but trust me…you wouldn’t want one as a pet. You know how they just climb trees? They have super huge claws to do that.😂 But I mean, you can hug them in special zoos and stuff, but you pretty much don’t touch them in the wild. My dog would like to eat one though. I swear, he is a tINY DOG and so angry at the world. Sheesh.😂
Hand lettering is so cool!! I kind of have vague ideas that I should do some but then…I’m really too lazy.😂
HAHAHA now I want to buy it because obviously I’m obsessed with it but I’ll feel bad stealing it from you 😂
You should totally try hand lettering! It’s fun, even if you suck at it, which is where I feel like I am with it haha!
I’m gonna need to find the zoos where I can touch one. My life goal is to hug a panda, so maybe when I accomplish that I can touch a koala at the same zoo 😂
Fun post! I love seeing what people’s rooms look like. I’m really trying to organize my bookshelves more. It’s a work in process. You have such a lovely view from your room. I LOVE the Penguin postcards on your wall. I’d want to keep them all too. 🙂
-Lauren
Aww, thank you! And omg I just discovered there are COOKBOOK Penguin postcards!! So obviously I know what I need to work on collecting next.😉
Oooh, this was such a fun post! 😀 Your room is awesome! My room is semi how I want it to be. I mean, the walls are turquoise and my professional artist cousin painted a horse on one of the walls and the other wall has photographs and nice stuff like that and there are glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling so yasss. But it’s unfortunately messy and tiny, and those two things added together equal me not wanting to spend time in my room. If I ever get rid of a bunch of stuff and actually get it organized, then it shall be fantastic! At least my closet is organized, but everything else is not fulfilling my expectations.
I only have one bookshelf in my room (because my room is tiny and that’s all there is room for) but there is actually only one shelf with books. I have a few more books in a box somewhere, but I own hardly any books because I don’t buy books. (But I use my (well, my mom’s) library card very much and have the number memorized because books!) I don’t think it used to be organized, but then I started reading your blog and I was like, “Oh, I want to be like Cait!” so I organized my one shelf in a rainbow order and it makes me very happy. 🙂
And I do indeed have a pet! She is a cat who basically naps on my bed all day and is super soft and cuddly. She’s fabulous.
Ohhh TURQUOISE WALLS. That sounds amazing!! And having like an actual painting sounds soooo cool. Tiny is not so good though. Can’t fit as many books in.😂 I’m like a bit of an organised nerd, but sometimes rearranging things is really hard right?!
I have my library card number memorised too. But omg, do you reserve books and then they ALL come in at once? Because I swear that’s how it happens for me and it’s a problem.😂
Awww, LOVELY CAT!!
How do I even say how immensely exciting this post was, Cait? Just OH! YOUR BEDROOM IS THE GREATEST! And isn’t it everyone’s dream that one day their bedroom/house/space looks like little pieces of them have been scattered all about? IT SHOULD BE. 😀
Currently I share a room with my sister, but she’s quite accommodating of my sitting on my bed writing and ignoring her while I’m reading and having papers strewn everywhere. Mostly accommodating, that is. I also can’t wait to steal my siblings’ bookshelves because mine is sort of overflowing.
I LOVE HOW YOU PLOT BOOKS LIKE SPIDERWEBS ON THE WALL!
Basically, I love your bedroom, Cait. And that is all. 🙂
WELL THANK YOU.😂I’m really glad you liked it!! It’s kind of fun to do a different sort of post now and then.😂 And yessss…I think it’s great if our workspace actually reflects US because it’s just special. And creative.
I used to share with my sister! When we were smol beans. She was…super messy. I think I nearly lost my brain and died several times.😂 Definitely steal bookshelves though. There’s no downsides, except for…perhaps….random glares from siblings. bUT OH WELL.
Your view is stunning – and with so many books and all that colour, I can understand why you never want to leave your room. I wouldn’t want to leave it either! Its like a cave of wonders!
My room is pitiful in comparison. I actually have ZERO books! Since I moved to China Four years ago, and frequently relocate to different cities, they were just too hard to drag along. If i didn’t have a kindle there is no way I could travel. Although it makes returning to England all the more sweet – just walking into my old room and SMELLING all the books. Its like coming home to a big warm hug 🙂
Fantastic post though Cait 🙂 Really enjoyed the four wall tour!
Aww, thank you!! And I agree.😍😂 It’s very inspiring. Especially if I smuggle in snacks and then manage to fight with my dog to repossess a corner of my own bed.
Awk, you live in China?! That’s so cool!! My oldest sister used to live in China and we visited for a month! But yes, I do understand how physical books aren’t really great for a travelling life. Kindles are LIFESAVERS.
Your room is the DREAM. I haven’t decorated my room in YEARS because there’s always the idea of moving on the horizon. :L I know what I want to do when I do decorate though… *scrolling pinterest endlessly for inspo*
Ooh, I love looking at pinterest room ideas.😍 Like what I wouldn’t give to have a pinterest room ahh!!!
Oooh this is fun, I am moving in! Especially if you aren’t even using the bed. Someone might as well, and it shall be me. The “view” from my windows is… depressing. Cruddy old houses that are unoccupied and a road full of potholes. Score. So no, my room is NOT how I want it. I mean, parts of it are. It’s getting there? I have no more room for bookshelves but I need more. I have a desk that is not organized like yours. And I have a bed that I actually sleep in 😉 I need to put up some posters above my bed- I have an idea for a The 100 theme. Of course. I have my THG shrine, and by my desk a whole bunch of Society6 quote prints framed. AND I have a MINI-FRIDGE. Cait, you need this. It will solve ALL the problems! I keep water, cherry coke zero, hummus, and rice pudding in it. And sometimes wine. And iced coffee if I am saving them for later.
Oh and my bookshelves are organized by this fancy system called “oh crap, they aren’t actually organized at all”. Well- that isn’t 100% true. I have a “favorites” shelf that IS organized alphabetically. Then I have a must-read shelf that isn’t organized. And then two other TBR ones that are not organized at all. But there are a few that are “read”, and those are alphabetical, too. So I can organize them AFTER I read them, but not before, I suppose! This was FUN, thanks for sharing!
But the question is: can you handle the 13% of the bed that my dog isn’t using?? Because I swear that’s all he gives anyone. And now he’s offended at me for using my desk all the time. And I’m just like “mATE. YOU DON’T EVEN LET ME ON THE BED ANYWAY”. Seriously. That dog has too much attitude and opinions for a single ball of floof. Anyway WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. YOU DON’T SLEEP EITHER.😂😂
Mini fridge…SHANNON. YOU GENIUS.
I confess I like have ONE TBR shelf, but honestly a lot of my TBR is mixed in with all the other books because I vaguely gave up on realising I was going to read it any time in this century.😂 help.
OOKaaay your room is goals alright? CAN I LIVE THERE PLEASE AND THANK YOU AND PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR BOOKS TOO. BWWAAHHAHA. And you totally wrote your first book when you were just one day old, right? THAT STIEFVATER SHRINE OMGGG I NEED ONE. *goes to Amazon* Also like how do you do Origami? my hands gets twisted and it’s not a nice time.
plus which font and photo editor do you use? IT IS SO COOL OMG.
I am also up for selling my brother’s body. I mean he is useless but I’d still get money right? so it is clearly a win win situation.
Aww, thanks!!😂 And yes absolutely I wrote my first book when I was 1 day old. *nods* But I seriously need to take down that spiderweb because I’ve rewritten the book so much it looks NOTHING like that outline.😂
ajfdkslad STIEFVATER. <3
And origmai is so fun! I only do like 3 designs thought so shhh I pretend to be talented but yet no.😂
Selling brothers seems a good idea. My brother has moved out but I'd still sell him.
My bedroom is my hobbit-hole too! (although i dont have nearly enough bookshelves….or books….but I have resolved that this is the year I solve this problem!)
And my sister’s too smol to have anything to steal :(. If anyone’s going to be doing the stealing, it’ll be her when I run away into the sunset to become an elf.
HOBBIT HOLES FTW. And second breakfast FTW too, while we’re at it. #priorities
Ohhh, shame about your sister being so smol. I suppose she can then grow up to be the thief, but STILL. It’s much better to get to be the thieving sister.
Your room is so cool! And it looks so big! My room kind of looks like how I want it to. In that my walls are painted black with silver splatters, with a black carpet, black curtains, and a rotation of black & grey/black & white/black, white & grey duvet covers. It’s pretty funky, I like it 🙂
But space is a problem, both in my room and in regards to room for my books. My bed is in the middle of the room (with the head of my bed against the wall) because I have so many bookcases (five), plus my chest of drawers and wardrobe and my radiator, there’s no wall space left to put it against. BUT I still don’t have enough bookcases. I think. I don’t believe I have room to shelve my books spine out, either horizontally or vertically. So they are bottom-of-the-pages out, mostly. I culled recently, so I have some gaps, but I still have huge piles. If I attempt to shelve my books spine out, I don’t think I’d have room for all of the books already on the shelves, let alone the ones in piles on the floor. There is no organisation to my bookcases. If I want a book that came out/I acquired recently or in the near future, I know it’ll be in one of the piles, or more recent shelves. Longer than a few months back? I have to search through all my books. I’M LYING! I’ve just remembered one of my tall bookcases and one of my short bookcases is shelved vertically spine out, double stacked… except they’re not stacked, so double shelved?. But my three others aren’t deep enough for double shelving, so it’s just piles of mysterious books. I should try to see if I’m able to fit them on nicely, but that means taking them all off and then trying to organise them, and ideally I’d like to shelve them alphabetically, but that’s just going to be such a mission. Just rest assured, I won’t be doing a post like this. It’s not a pretty sight, all those poor books with their bottoms on view!
But look at your pretty books all spine out! All pretty rainbows! And how much space you seem to have!
It is actually a really big room!! The rooms in our house are weirdly big because apparently a big family built the house to their preferences and then had to leave. So lucky for us.😂😂 Ooh your room does sound nice! I always vaguely have imagined it’d be nice to have like a feature coloured wall…but I think my parents would draw the line at that.😂
I’m out of bookshelf space now too, so I UNDERSTAND. it’s a problem. Can we like have bookshelves on the ceiling??!?? Surely this is the next option???
Caiiiit OH MY GOODNESS ALDKJFSLKJDFLSKJD
Thank you soooo much for sharing your lair/room/habitat with us!!! I so so SO enjoyed this post! 😀 I always adore seeing peoples rooms etc. and getting to see yours was SO SO FUN AAAHHH. Thank you!!!
Also. The Bunyips. I think you’re pulling out legs. o.o It sounded familiar so I looked Bunyip up aaaand they’re a mythological Australian swamp monster or some such?? So I was trying to figure out why I think of them as little fuzzy adorable guys. Then I remembered I read and Australian book called The Magic Pudding (it’s free online in the public domain I think) and the hero is Bunyip Bluegum, a koala. So anyways. XD
ANYWAYS I LOVE THIS POST THANKS MATE. (All the creatures out your window though. And all the boooooks. And Attabean (I shall call your dog this because I can) and all the art and thiiings. <3)
(*sorry, pulling OUR legs, not OUT legs. -_-)
N’aww, I’m so glad!! I’m always nosey and find other people’s posts like this interesting, so I was all like “I SHOULD DO THIS TOO”.😂 Plus I just recently got this desk from my sister so my room is SO organised right now. I must make use of that.😂
Nooo. The bunyips are real. I wouldn’t lie to you. And yeS the Magic Pudding confirms they’re real. (I loved that book as a kid haha.)
Despite the fact that I recently (7 months ago) moved and have nothing to my name, I AM IMPRESSED. I really want all of your wall decor, your room, just EVERYTHING. Also I’m really impressed you started a bullet journal! Every time I look at someone’s I get the urge to start. But then I realize that I am poor, have no creativity, and am a perfectionist, meaning that I will scrap the whole thing if I make one little mistake. So I just rather not (ALSO THE TIME!!! WHERE DO I GET IT? MY BUTT?)
Also I want to steal your view too!
I was like that with the bullet journal!! Like…no creativity…or time…😂 But it’s actually kind of addictive once you start? I mean, says she who hasn’t even written ANYTHING out for March, so I should probably hush.😂 I keep tearing out pages that aren’t perfect too, so you’re not alone. Also you just cover up dumb mistakes with scrapbook paper. #win
Ohhhh scrapbook paper is SUCH a good idea! Maybe this summer I will start one and load up on goodies from the art store 😀
EEEEE YOUR ROOM IS SO LOVELY. I only have one bookshelf and am in desperate need of more because I HAVE NO ROOM. My dad suggested I had too many books, and I suggested he didn’t have enough brains, so I think we’re even now. XP
ALL BOOKWORMS ALWAYS NEED MORE SHELVES. And pfft, I’m glad you educated your dad on the error of that statement.😂
OOOOHHHH OOOOHH YOUR ROOM HOW EXCITING.
No really. I’ve never had my own room (actually I did for a month when I was 11 or 12 but I spent every night convinced that the creak of the floor (it was an attic) was a mad axe murderer coming to kill me so eventually my brother was sent up so said murderer would have more targets. Very effective strategy, I might add. #theperilsofanoveractiveimagination )
Anyway, having one’s own room sounds nice. I like being tidy, and Shanti doesn’t so our halves of our room look relatively different. I try not to be a control freak about the messiness (I mean it’s better than my brother and other sister’s room so) but it’s hard. My favourite part of my room is my bed, windowsill (it’s super wide and is filled with my stuff–the book I’m reading, lotions and potions (a phrase my parents adore. They’re weird), a head torch (for reading under the covers and not having to get up to turn off the light, duh), some hooks, and photos/fangirl things.
Also I LIKE YOUR ZENTANGLES. I can’t draw very well, but I like zentangling. I don’t have the time for a bullet journal, but I DO make myself a calendar page each month with stickers, the dates, books I read, and things I did (which is basically like go to school but whatever).
OKAY I SHOULD STOP RAMBLING.
Duuude, setting up siblings to take the murder instead of you is AN EXCELLENT IDEA. I would totally do that too. When I shared a room with my sister when we were kids, I had her next to the window so, you know, when it was busted open and axe men descended on us, they’d get her first. I don’t know what I planned to do since I didn’t exactly have an escape route???? But the thought of self-preservation counts.
Ahem.
#NiceSistersFTW
I haven’t done proper zentangling in YEARS THOUGH. *cries* I need to get back into the habit though because it’s so fun and actually not as hard as it seems.😂 (Also your rambles are amazing. <3)
I am so in love with your bookshelves! For real, those are the exact shelves that I want! I am so envious of your massive collection of books. Alas, my home is too small and my bf has to reel me on buying books because otherwise I would fill our tiny apartment with books (not that is a bad thing or anything!)
ps. I finally made a book blog! 😀 Tis still a small thing with only three posts but hey! It’s a start!
Ahhh thank you!! And omg I do so love my shelves. <3 The square one is from IKEA and it was always like my DREAM shelf.😍 I mean, I'd love an entire wall lined with them, but haha...maybe one day.😂
Oh yay that you started a blog!!
OMG YOUR ROOM IS SOOOOOOOO GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like seriously.
My room is….a work in progress. I have it closer to what I want it to look like, but since my parents aren’t letting me plaster my walls in band posters, I’m making do with my pin board. But gosh I would love to have at least a couple posters up.
I actually recently ran out of room on my bookshelf. Okay not so recently, but I started stack the books sideways. And then as of last week I officially cannot squeeze another book on there. I need a new shelf.
I organize my books by colour.
AGh, these parents who don’t want things to cover our walls. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THEM.😂 Although TBH I only got the Penguin postcards up on my walls because I said it was for a photoshoot. I mean, it WAS. But I just never planned to take them down.😂 Ahem. #EvilChild
We aaall need new shelves. It’s actually like panic stations when it’s official that there’s no more room!?? YAS THAT YOU ORGANISE BY COLOUR TOO THOUGH. *hi fives*
you have so many books it can’t be real.
It’s honestly just aaall in our imaginations.
OKAY YOUR ROOM IS GORGEOUS. How do you do it?? It’s so colorful and happy and HOMEY. AND YOUR BOOKSHELVES LIKE MY SOUL IS WEEPING WITH THE BEAUTY. And I love how your furniture comes from your sister mostly. One of my bookshelves is from my younger sister but i’m not as cool as you bc I didn’t actually steal them . . . MY MOM STOLE THEM FOR ME. #EvilHechman #OrHenchwoman #OrHenchmom????????
Just confused now.
I just throw fake flowers everywhere tbh.😂 And BOOKSHELVES. Honestly I just sneak about my house asking people if they REALLY need that shelf because I want it. Unfortunately there’s no more room for more shelves?? Unless I block off my door??? < -- viable option
Cait, I love your room! And that view 😍. Also I love your book planning spiderwebs. Now i really want to do that in my room XD.
Actually, I think I’m switching my room right now? I’m not entirely sure, but my mom wants me to move to a different room. My room is always a mess anyways. And we never finished the wallpaper so only half of the wall has wallpaper. XD I do really like my room though, I just need more bookshelves. I only have one tiny one in my room and the rest are upstairs.
You shoooould. It’s such a helpful visual representation to the the spiderwebs! I find I actually rEMEMBER my book plots haha.😂
Always need more bookshelves. ALWAYS. It’s like the eternal bookworm cry. I hope you get your room sorted out how you want it though!
OMG your room is so awesome!! Mine is overcrowded with junk and not enough books haha!
~Sara
Never enough books right?! I could probably cover my entire life with books and still need more.😂
I think your bookshelves and desk are shockingly tidy. I need to do some work on my study, which has been on my ‘to-do’ list for yonks. At the moment my books are in bookshelves in my bedroom but I want to move them into the living space I think, but want prettier shelves if they’re going there!
Oh thank you!😂 I do like my things organised and in order! And actually my floor is pretty neat too except for my dog who thinks a floor is only a good floor if it has 93 tennis balls all over it. I mean, SOmEONE SHOULD PROBABLY NOT GIVE HIM SO MANY BALLS. But what’s done is done.😂
Your room is awesome. I have a whole house, but alas, hardly have any space to myself. I have an office room that USED to be all mine and was filled with all manners of glorious things. But now I have an infant and she has claimed this space as also hers. Even now she is grabbing my leg trying to climb up me and garner attention. Silly child. I am interneting.
I LOVE the spiderweb thing(s) you have going; that’s an awesome idea! If I still had doors on my office closet, I might try something similar! Alas, I do not. I DO have a whiteboard though, and that is where I do a lot of my initial brainstorming before I type things up. It is currently covered with chicken scratch regarding a new character; yay!
Oh these infants and their demands for space. I mean. Why can’t we just put them in a draw somewhere and have more room for books? *shakes head* I tried convincing my sister to live in a cupboard so I could turn her room into a library but NO GO. So weird.
Ha! I don’t get it. She likes PLAYING with the drawers, but if I try to put her IN one and walk away it’s all wailing and screaming and sending me psychic hate messages of dread. This should be a perfectly acceptable thing. >.>
Super fun post, Cait! Not only did you put a lot of work into this, you made it a fun read too! Great job. 🙂
I double stack my books because my space isn’t big enough to have a walk of bookshelves though I wish it were. Guess those are #SomedayGoals.
Also, stunning view.
Why thank you! 😂 I had fun putting it together.
I mean, this is basically heaven. When I die I want to live eternally in a room like this? Your outside is a koala reserve? I mean. What am I doing with my life.
My whole house doesn’t have even 1% of the glory of this room. (Though the rent is cheap? so that’s a plus. And there’s a park down the street…but it’s no koala reserve)
Thanks for letting us take a look. I always enjoy posts like these. =)
Yes what ARE you doing, Emily? :’) 😂 You definitely should like adopt a few trees and koalas because it’ll make your house 10 x better, I promise.😂 And so glad you liked the post!! It was nice to do something a bit different. Eeep!
Hi, Cait!
If recently been accused of bein lazy and judging by the amount of your posts I haven’t commented they might have a point. :/ So I’ll work on that. 🙂
So, where to start? Your evil lair ist rrrrreaaaallly pretty. Seems really cozy. 🙂 And I admire your view. It seems so calming. Thats a lot of animal in your garden btw. All I got is birds and an occasioal zombie since my apartment overlooks the lokal cemetery. ^^’
Also, your dog is really cute! *.* 13/10 would pet.
Thanks for the tour, Cait. I’m looking forward to the bullet journal post. 🙂
LG, m
That’s totally not a worry! You don’t have to read all my posts.😂 I enjoy chatting with you whenever you get a chance. 😉
I’m so glad you like how I’ve got my room set out.😂IT’S MY FAVOURITE. And yaaas my dog/cat/frog is the cutest little fluffball of pscyho. <3
LOVE your room- it’s just so youuu. Like, it’s everything I have pinned down as “Cait” and this post made me so HAPPY…but also really sad because having a big enough, perfect enough room is still the dream for someday for me ahahaha. Loved this post, though- apart from your lair itself, the view from your window is spectacular too!
OMG THANK YOU.😂 and it is pretty me, isn’t it??😂 I’m so predictable haha. I’m SO lucky how big it is and just how I can have it set out like this. <3
You’re room is lovely (super envious of your large desk space), I normally just take over any flat surface in my house and cover it in junk and then bemoan how I don’t have a professional work space *sigh* what can you do eh? Your bullet journal looks lovely too, let me know if you want any A5 sized printables, I can send you links or attachments 🙂 Mwuahahahahah
Covering desks with junk is honestly the easiest thing to do.😂 I’ve SWORN to myself I’ll keep this desk neat though. It’s so much more inviting to sit down to work when everything looks neat and not overwhelming!!
Such a cool post, absolutely loved it 🙂 your room is great. And clean! And your cat-dog 😀 is that really the view from your window? I know koalas are probably more common there than we CONTINENTALS think, but that still sounds pretty crazy 🙂 hey, does it.. actually smell of eucalyptus a little? Sorry if dumb question :DDD
It’s also really cool that you got hired as a reviewer. Somehow I never thought that it could be a paid thing! How does one get into something like that? I mean, I thought people just randomly decide to blog (like me xD) and do it for free.
Your TBR is also pretty amazing 🙂 I only have age old books and e-books. Regional. But seriously, books here are ridiculously priced. A book can cost 40eu. That’s total crap because like, that’s TEN LUNCHES in the center of town!!! I can’t begin to explain HOW wrong that is, so I just boldly buy books from America and let the local pathetic trade die, cause seriously. NOT WITH THAT PRICE. Plus it takes books forever to get here/get translated etc. So no physical bookshelves for me 🙂 but I don’t mind. Aš long as I can read! That’s the most important part anyway.
It also seems like your home is pretty quiet and calm. Away from the noise or crowds 🙂 that’s great I bet. Sometimes I wish I had some cousin to visit that lived in a place like that – to rest from the bustle of the capital where I live.
Also, cello! So cool. Is it actually bigger than you? 😀 you can tell me, you’re probably actually taller than me 😀
Actually koalas AREN’T really common.😂 We live in a pretty special area to have the koala reserve in our backyard haha. I’ve seen more koalas in the last 6 years of living here than in the rest of my life combined! And those are gum trees and they don’t really smell.😂
Oh so my freelance job is really awesome, but definitely not common.😂 I just happened to randomly find this small Aussie retail bookstore that was looking for bloggers to post on a regular basis and I got hired! So yeah, I work for a bookstore basically.
Ugh books are expensive. And I complain that I have to spend $35 AUD on books, but yours is waaaay more than that. *gulps*
It IS nice and quiet. <3 The only way to live. <3
HAHA NO THE CELLO IS NOT BIGGER THAN ME.😂 But nearly. I'm 5'1.
Ha! We’re almost the same height! I’m 159cm, that’s something between 5’1 and 5’2, I’m not sure cause we don’t use those measurements 🙂 why am I always so glad to know another person I share interests with is as small as me xD xD
But the cello is totally cool. And so is your bookstore review job! Can I read those reviews online somewhere? 🙂 where do they post them?
I’m glad that koalas are not as common then 😀 makes me kind of.. feel better about the fact that I probably won’t ever see one! Haha.
But you know. My childhood favorite teddy was a koala! Like the one you never leave and sleep hugging. The weird part about it was that he had a Christmas hat and a Santa Claus bag xD he was totally my best friend. Up till I was 14, I swear 😀
OH YOU ARE SMALL LIKE ME! I’m 158cm! There are challenges being so small, tbh. Books are always too high. I have to use a ladder to reach all the stacks on top of my bookshelf.😂
Oh yes totally! I post at boomerangbooks.com.au and I do a few articles but mostly they’re the reviews you’ll see on Goodreads haha.
Aww, that’s awesome you had a koala! Hey I STILL own my childhood favourite stuffed toy…it’s deep in the back of my cupboard somewhere.😂
Oh, I definitely have my old koala as well 🙂 sometimes I kiss its nose when no one’s looking >_>
And tonight I dreamt of two kangaroos on each other’s shoulders, with a dress and wig, posing as a human xD I totally blame you with your koalas 😀 (it was very awesome. Blonde wig!)
That is an awesome freelance project if they love your wacky reviews 🙂 not every bookstore will accept actually funny reviews, most just do the serious kind. That must be a cool bookstore 🙂
And yeah, small height problems xD in my country, small girls are considered not pretty. Only tall ones are pretty xD models and whatnot. As you might remember, my boyfriend is from abroad, so he’s pretty much the first one who told me that outside of here ‘petite’ is considered pretty xD yeah, and then there’s the whole can’t reach stiff thing, but hey – at least we’ll never bump our heads on opens cupboard doors, right? 😂
your room is #goals! i have 2 bookshelves; one of them is filled with novels while the other is filled with comic books and manga. i wish i can have as many books as you! i have difficulty getting physical copies because books are expensive in where i live and there’s no library that stores really updated english novels and stuff like that so i can’t borrow any either. for me, it’s either purchase or ebook (and i don’t want to resort to ebooks). to non-readers, what i have now are quite a lot but for me, books will never be enough haha
i hope one day i can have a balanced budget so i can splurge on books and have my room drenched in it 😛
Aw, I understand the pain of not having books!! I only started collecting a few years ago and honestly my collection is mostly review-copies from publishers or super cheap books I’ve gotten from library sales. Because I don’t have a lot of money either, and books are expensive. But it’d suck to not have a library!! I’m sorry for you!
Your room is so much tidier then mine. I have a complete inability to hang up clothes or put books back on a shelf. I love your gorgeous view.
I love keeping things neat.😂Although, I mean, I did tidy up a BIT for the photos hahah.
So many books in one room. I love it. Haha. It is great to see what your room looks like. It is such a great glance into someone’s private life that they are willing to share. So thank you Cait, for sharing. Your room looks like a great place to be in. And I love that view! And we need colors. When I still lived at home my room was yellow. 😀
Aww, thankyou! It was a really fun post to do! And YES colours are fabulous and they make things so much more cheerful. <3
I loved this, and your view… 😍😍😍😍😍 I adore the way Atticus sits, ha ha. 💛💛 Do you get the dinner plate sized spiders I see in all those Australian YouTube videos? 😱😱😱
Baha NO. I swear the internet just makes Australia sound like this extremely rugged place when in reality like it’s NOT EVEN SCARY AT ALL. 😂😂
Would where you live be considered the Outback?
Omg no!! haha.😂 I’m smack in suburbia, like 30mins from the ocean!
I adore your space!! So much color and general loveliness. And that self portrait… perfection.
Aww, thank you!! 😊 I adore it too, hehe.
Girl, you are so funny and relatable, that I laugh so hard that people stare at me like I need to go to an asylum. 😊😂Keep doing what you’re doing (making our storm of a day have a nice rainbow in it)
OKAY THIS BASICALLY MAKES MY DAY. THANK YOU. 💕😂😂
your cello (it took me way too long to spell that) is the same as my guitar… time why you leave me?
ALSO WATCH YOUR DOG BECAUSE I AM COMING TO STEAL THAT LITTLE FLOOFBALL OF CUTENESS
We just need 93 more hours in our day so we can do ALL THE THINGS. And nooo my floofball.😂 Although to be fair he hates all of humanity and just likes food and taking over my bed, so. Good luck with the thieving.😂
I AM IN LOVE WITH YOUR LAIR!!!! (in fact, one day you might even find me under all those piles of books, just inhaling their stories, and I’m sure you won’t be weirded out because you will join me in being socially awkward and just read the books with me;)
But anyways, my question is how do you organise your books? I mean, obviously via colour, but like are all the books on your shelves read and you have your tbr pile on your desk’s shelf like in the photo? or are all the read and unread books put together and you just add the books you want to read on that shelf?
I’m asking because I am in need of some bookshelf organisation inspiration!!ASAP!! Maybe you can even post something about organising bookshelves?!! That would be awesome and I would be happy for the rest of eternity!!
Also, all your posts make my day!!!
I mostly keep read books on my shelves! At least on the paperback shelves. 😂 The hardcover shelves are a mix of read/non-read because I don’t have anywhere big enough for my TBR hhhaa. Otherwise I just put things together via colour and what seems most aesthetically pleasing. So basically….no organisation just I remember where I put things because I can remember the order of 100+ books but NOT OTHER THINGS, LIKE MY FAMILY’S BIRTHDAYS OR THE SHAPE OF THE MOON.😂
(Thank you!! I’m so glad you liked the post!)
NEED ARTSY TIPS AHHHH also yes snakes are scary as heck…
Snakes are the opposite of a good time that’s for sure. 😭😂
Wow, your room is so pretty and colorful!!!! My room is quite nice though I would have liked a window seat and get rid of the slanting roof.
I have a pet cat and guinea pig and fish. What’s your dog called?
Oh my God!!!! I thought I had a lot of books but you’ve got loads!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My bookshelf is color coordinated though for some reason I have got a lot of blue books and not many black…. Great post as always. Thanks.
